It would be handy for what I do to have macos on hand. However, I do find the modern mac computers too expensive for what is being offered and what you are able to do with them. Is it still wise to buy an older 2012 mac mini? How would it compare to the 2018 revision? I know theres a thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 1 adapter, and thunderbolt 1 is about 10 mbps, so there would be a performance dip with the egpu; would it be really bad?

Probably

I have yet to find a guide telling me explicitly what to do tho. Every guide is ambiguous on where to get macos.

Isn't macos free? Just do a search for "download macos for hackingtosh" or grab the iso from the app store on a real mac.

You can only download it legally on a Mac for that Mac, and you can only download it from Apple on a Mac or a Hackintosh.

There's no need for an install ISO, because macs have an "internet recovery" mode.
