If I wanted to set up a booru for a medium sized community, what would be the best way to go about it? Assume I have no knowledge whatsoever. What would be the steps to create it, and then host it? The most I can find it github guides, which is fine, but i’d like a more top to bottom explanation. Thank you.

you'd need a server (dedi or virtual, depending on how big and active would be the community), then you install your desired booru software and its prerequisites (db, daemons, cron jobs, ...) and set it up
but aside from that, you will probably also need to do some basic server hardening, setting up domain records, caching, backups etc.

Fyi this is the reason you're not getting much response. The question is both way too open-ended and also suggests you haven't even done the groundwork internet searching to get some notions about boruu software or hosting options. Do that stuff then you should have a narrower set of questions that'll probably get more answers.

It's not ridiculous for OP to expect there to be some rent-a-booru company like there is with Ark, Minecraft, etc.

There probably isn't, but the expectation is not ridiculous.

there is actually, but they stopped letting people make new ones. it’s called the booru project

Ok, I understand. I would just like someone to point me in the right direction for a first step in that case

Determine the purpose and scope of the booru: Before setting up the booru, it's important to determine its purpose and scope. What kind of content will be allowed? Who is the target audience? How will the booru be moderated? These are important questions to consider before moving forward.

Choose a platform: There are several booru platforms available, such as Danbooru, Gelbooru, and Moebooru. Each platform has its own strengths and weaknesses, so it's important to research and choose the one that best fits your needs.

Set up a server: To host the booru, you will need a dedicated server with sufficient resources to handle the expected traffic. You can choose to set up your own server or rent one from a hosting provider.

Install and configure the platform: Once you have chosen a platform and set up a server, you will need to install and configure the platform. This typically involves installing the necessary software, creating a database, and configuring the server settings.

Customize the platform: Most booru platforms offer a range of customization options, such as changing the site theme, modifying the layout, and adding custom features. These customization options can help make the booru unique and appealing to users.

Implement security measures: It's important to implement security measures to protect the booru and its users from malicious attacks. This can include setting up firewalls, implementing SSL encryption, and regularly updating the software to address any security vulnerabilities.

Set up backups and disaster recover.
