I figured out how to losslessly crop video with ffmpeg, but it results in a short freeze at the beginning of the video. I'm guessing because it isn't cropped exactly on a keyframe?

How would I figure out where the nearest keyframe is and tell ffmpeg to crop it from there?

And reading subtitles ruins the experience.
Just start learning Japanese and watch all your anime without subtitles, it'll pay off in the long run, even if the start can be really rocky.
Personally, I'd rather not understand what's going on than deal with subtitles or shitty dubs, so it was actually quite easy for me, your mileage may vary though.

Agreed. In my own (personal, and perhaps flawed, subjective) opinion, it seemed to start with Dexter's Lab. Which is not to say that Dexter's Lab is bad, only that it seemed to ignite a generation of copycat flat, simplistic, lifeless art and animation. Also the character designs in stuff like X-Men: Evolution look like shit compared to the 90s cartoon. I can't really put my finger on it but it just looks goofy to me. It lacks masculine energy, I guess.
