previous thread here: >>3984488The July sumo tournament starts soon (July 4th). If you don't watch sumo, now is a great time to get into it as this tournament should be a good one.The front runner is Terunofuji, an ozeki (second highest rank in sumo) gunning for promotion to yokozuna (the highest rank possible). He's currently on the greatest comeback run the sport has ever seen. After winning his first makuuchi (top division) tournament in 2015 and being promoted to ozeki for the first time, his performance suffered on account of multiple knee injuries and diabetes. Many losses and absences due to these injuries dropped him all the way down to jonidan (second lowest rank), which is usually for literal teenagers and other amateurs making their debut. He's fought tooth and nail and eventually made it back to makuuchi, being the first wrestler to ever drop from the top division down to jonidan and made their way back up. Since coming back to makuuchi, he's won 3 championships (and won the last 2 in a row) and was the runner-up for 2 other tournaments. With a win or close runner-up performance, he has a strong case for being promoted to yokozuna. In terms of fighting style, he's known for being monstrously strong. Webm related. Double underhooks is normally a superior position in grappling, but Terunofuji is so strong he'll hoist 150-200 kgs wrestlers up with overhooks and lift them out of the ring.
>>4013567One of Terunofuji's rivals in the division is fellow ozeki Takakeisho.Takakeisho is an oshi-zumo specialist. Oshi-zumo (pusher-thruster) is the kind of style that most people think of when they think of sumo: they charge hard and continue pushing and thrusting at their opponent until they get pushed out. Takakeisho is as pure of a pusher-thruster as you can be at the highest levels of the sport. He charges and he pushes (and sometimes pulls if his opponent manages to find their footing and start coming forward). While he gets many complaints about being one-dimensional, he's damn good at what he does. Here's Takakeisho pushing Terunofuji out of the ring to win the playoff and the Emperor's Cup for the November 2020 tournament.
feel like pure shit just want Uberreem back..
>>4013593The biggest obstacle for both men is Hakuho, the only remaining yokozuna. Hakuho is the greatest sumo wrestler of all time. If you open up the sumo record book, Hakuho's name is on almost every line. Most career wins, most championships, most undefeated championships, the list goes on and on.This tournament holds special meaning for him as it coincides with the Olympics. Hakuho's father was an Olympic silver medalist for wrestling (and the first Olympic medalist period for Mongolia). If Hakuho can put on a good show and stick around long enough, he'll be able to perform the ring-opening ceremony and participate in the Olympics like dear ol' dad.Age and injuries have caught up with him and he's looked significantly more human in the past year or two. He's also sat out the last two tournaments recovering from knee surgery, so it's hard to tell how he'll look when he shows up this tournament. If he looks like his old self, then everyone else is in for a bad time. In his prime, he was near untouchable. On top of being incredibly athletic, he's a master technician with an unmatched killer instinct and aura. If you want proof, here's him beating Takakeisho like he was beating a small child.
>>4013613what happened here? Broken ribs?
>>4013636He kicked him so hard that the other guy got a bruise in the shape of his toes.
What was that clip of a black boxer refusing to shake with a slavic guy, and then the black guy gets absolutely fucking pummeled?
>>4013567How would one access the tournament to watch it?
>>4014465Here's a pastebin with links to sumo information, streams, highlights, etc.https://pastebin.com/hsNuJxYuYou can watch it live on abema.tv or on NHK if you've got a cable TV subscription. There are also people who'll host streams (usually re-streaming from one of the aforementioned sources).NHK also posts highlights of the top division online on their website the day after (tournaments run for 15 days). You can find game threads for it on /sp/ when it's in-season if you want to shitpost with the rest of us. Off-season discussion is in /xs/.
>>4015485Awesome! Thanks a ton!
>>4013545My life would be pointless if I didn't get my daily Grand Sumo Highlights.
>>4015548No problem, m8. I had a passing interest in sumo from reading articles and from training grappling, but I didn't seriously get into it until I found a stream from a sumo /sp/ thread. Happy to spread the word like those other sumo anons did for me.

>>4018247Isn't it legal to hit your opponent in the face with slaps and palm strikes? And you can you even win by KO? Sounds like combat to me.
>>4013610Straight up horse meat power there
>>4019935>>4019904>>4019912are these from the tournament that started this weekend?
>>4019947I think so, though I can't confirm since I haven't done my Japanese/sumo reps. I got them from here: https://twitter.com/sumogarufrendo
>>4013593Note that Takakeisho is also attacking on his opponent's inhale.
>>4013629Btw that's the WBO President on the left standing up after the knock down... Daniel was being groomed as a new poster boy but Pirog was no slouch in the ring as that knock-out showed.
>>4019947Yes, all of those happened on day 1 of the July 2021 tournament in Nagoya.
>>4020448>Pirog next bout was going to be against Golovkin before he retired due to back injury WE WUZ ROBBED
>>4018699You watched the webm, mate?
>>4018247I don't get what happened here
>>4013545thanks for posting all of these and spending the time to do the write-ups. you piqued my interest and i've been watching the highlights from the past couple days and am gonna try to watch live later.
>>4021335No problem. I'm happy to introduce people to the sport.
>>4015445I can't wait for the rematch with Loma.
>>4013934wtf so he's allowed to turtle on the floor but you're not allowed to smash his brains in for doing so?
>>4013567How's the Croation? Forgot his name, the big motherfucker like 2 tournaments ago he looked pretty ragged and his performance was in decline. Has he made a comeback?
>>4024647You can't hold on the ropes in Rizin. You can stomp or kick on ground opponents, unlike organizations which follow the unified rules of mma (ufc for example).
>>4027697>>4027698Buck status: BROKEN
>>4027722Uh that's illegal.
>>4013545OP, great thread, it reminds me that there are only one kind of fat people i like, and that is sumo wrestlers
>>4027807He hits him on the back of the head like 6 times.
Thank you for all the webms sumoanon
>>4019935This one had me slap my own forehead when I saw it the first time.
>>4028134This was the most mind boggling sumo Ive seen so far. I love Tobizaru for his creative techniques, but this fight looks like a child vs adult.
>>4027819Strongmen are a second type of fast moving fat people you might like.
>>4013567>>4015485>>4017847damn, wish I had seen this thread a week ago. Looks cool but it seems I missed the tournament
>>4028476Surprise, the tournament is 15 days longYou got 2 weeks of sumo left
>>4027719Just realized ^post is just a longer version of >>4027722, sorry
>>4013545Yall see that one with hakuho and Tobizaru.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maN0A4m4Vnw
This thread has legit made me interested in sumo. Thanks to all the sumo bros.
>>4029223lol Uriah is a retard.>IF MMA DIDN'T HAVE ANY RULES YOU'D BE DEADI don't even understand the point he's trying to make.
>>4024695If you mean Tochinoshin, he's Georgian and he hasn't done well. His knees are shot and it's obvious he's only scraping by to collect paychecks while he can. It's a shame. In his prime, he was one of the most physically strong rikishi ever, but time comes for everybody unfortunately.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j864UUj6ZGk>>4028476We're just past the midpoint of the tournament. There's about a week left. You can catch up on the highlights here:https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/sumo/
>>4013567Thanks for all this information, I watched my first sumo stream last night and I gotta say, I really enjoyed it. I was wondering though, how are the matches decided? I didn't see much of a pattern in the Makuuchi. Tetunofuji and Hakuho seemed pretty damn unstoppable last night. I hope I get to see them go at it.
>>4030117Hows it decided who they go against that is.
bless you sumoanon
>>4029576I'm starting to like this Hakuho guy. He's rather stylish.
>>4030117>>4030122There's a committee that sets up the matches. They make the matches for the first two days of the tournament before the tournament starts. Once the tournament is underway, they set the schedule for the next day on the day before (Day 5 schedule gets made on Day 4, and so on). They usually pit the highest ranking wrestlers/tournament leaders against each other in the 2nd week. Terunofuji only fought ozeki during the last few days for the past few basho. Hakuho would only fight other yokozuna (back when there were multiple yokozuna running around) towards the end on the tournament as well. The rank and filers who don't fight against the sanyaku (top 4 ranks) in the first week normally fight against similarly-ranked opponents in the first week. In the second week, they typically match up guys with similar records up to that point in the tournament.other guidelines>sumo wrestlers don't fight the same guy more than once>sumo wrestlers don't fight guys who are related by blood or from the same heya (training stable)The exception to both of those would be if it's for a playoff match to determine who'll win the yusho.
>>4030785Why do they wear these outfits for onna sumo? Just go in a mawashi like the males. Its agonizing.
>>4029385That he's a real one
>>4027459Open your third eye
>>4031270A real moron.
>>4030785Sumo women are up there with volley ball girls and soft ball players as some of the most beautiful women athletes
All of my favorite rikishi lost today. Teru and Hakuho cannot be halted

Does anyone have the Prichard Colon going to vegetable video?
>>4034491that guy is 6'8"
>>4024728This fight was absolute bunkers.
>>4022993why the fuck they let people to sit so close to the ring, they want to get crush that badly?
>>4035903Same reason people sit so close to rally races, a taste of the danger and a good look.
>>4013636Krocop happened. The guy has kicked so many people into tossing the fight it's nuts.
