>>3771918Thanks friend.>>3755893>>3775814Percussion is too thin compared to the rest of the instruments - consider using a better patch, or adding more layers, editing the existing one. Different synth parts can be softer with their entry, usually done using filters and volume. The chords at the end are very abrupt/aggressive in tone and volume and don't seem to go anywhere musically.>>3774769I like this a lot. I wouldn't recommend posting WIP though.
>>3776290>Different synth parts can be softer with their entry, usually done using filters and volume.Would side chaining work well for this?>The chords at the end are very abrupt/aggressive in tone and volume and don't seem to go anywhere musically.End of the streamable or end of the webm?> I wouldn't recommend posting WIP though. How come?
>>3771737Based & TempleOSpilled.
>>3755893after the ~1:06 part i'd recommend syncopating the beat to add some momentum. Also similarly to what the other guy said, add additional scales, or better yet work in musical variation to what's already there. Add some measures of rest to break up each phrase too.Currently it's promising, but in the state it's right now it's a little bit boring to listen to after the first minute.
>>3776870>1It could. There's multiple ways to achieve a similar outcome, I find it easiest, and especially common with electronic music for smooth entries is to use a low-pass or hi-pass filter going from 100% to 0 over the period of entry. You heard such an effect a million times in existing music.>2Yes, at the end.>3That's a personal preference, but I think there's merit to it. Getting feedback on a thing prior to completion, especially with art, may influence you to change direction or quit altogether. At the same time, in the case of good feedback, you may not feel as pressured personally to continue since you've already "put something out there". For the audience member also, you're building an expectation which may not be payed off - that's a risk that can be avoided.Altogether, in the process of writing and producing, it seems like an unnecessary inclusion that detracts from optimal outcomes.
>>3777458I understand and thank you.>>3777317I thought the crisis state one was the weakest of the three I made so I hadn't worked on it very much. I think I will start to work on it again. Yeah I agree they kinda get boring after a bit. I'll try to spruce them up. I ahve two new VSTs I work with now so I can make some interesting new sounds to spcie them up I hope.

Okay, I'll post a chiptune I made at the start of the Corona Pandemic shit... I don't really want to post any of the stuff that I've already uploaded to Themodarchive since my account there is associated with my real name. And the chiptune scene is incredibly niche. Please forgive the 10 or so seconds of silence at the start, OpenShot Video Editor is fucking up the audio on the webM export for the first few seconds, and I am too lazy to figure out why.Sadly I don't really compose stuff anymore, I am like in the middle section of the Dunning-Kruger effect.Everything I start trying to make sounds shit to me sadly, and it kills my energy to keep working on it.
>>3783671hits me with some of that h0ffman style vibes. In fact it really reminds me of that little fakeout at the start of Professional Tracker. Or another mod, Reverie of Truth by Misty&Daeron.Good shit, anon. I'm sure your other stuff is just as excellent.

>>3783899they are great of course, I don't want to be compaired to geniuses like Hoffman, his stuff is still legendary on TMA and he's still making music too! Misty&Daeron I've never seen though before.. I liked it, but they aren't Hoffman's level of skill.

>>3785322>>3785325thanks. I was feeling that too but i honestly didn't know what else to add without going overboard. I'll try to readjust the timbre of the bass a bit more to make it fuller and also see how a counter bass line might sound as well

>>3786556well thanks, friend!
>>3786942I used to have more ideas when I was complete noob, music just came out purely by playing sounds. After learning the music theory, I can't help myself but to follow certain guidelines to make it sound better but have lost the creativity. Maybe it's just me but it's weird.Still, learning the basics and then focusing on your favorite genre for hours even if it means producing 1 minute that sort of sounds to what you like is the only way. Once you get the basics it supposed to get faster and easier. Also for NES style sound try Gamble Kid VST. It's for Kontakt btw.

>>3803511High-end VSTi are based on sampling real orchestras/instruments hence they sound like real orchestras - because they are. I started trying to make real music a few weeks ago and here's a shitty thing I made and I don't know how to turn it into a full song :(still, I thought I'd post it here hoping for some feedback!
>>3815090My advice is this : study and practice - yes, in parallel also learn an instrument, piano is preferable, guitar is a good option. An instrument will help you orient yourself properly. Do your own research on what you need to know and how to accomplish it. Come back in 2 years, then post and ask for feedback.
>>3815090the piano kinda sounds like Angel Beats
>>3815107I have a full sized midi keyboard and I tried learning it a few times, but I always felt like I was making no progress whatsoever so I gave up pretty quickly. I'll try again though, maybe this time I'll have the motivation to keep learning. Anyway, thank you for the advice!>>3815200I googled it and it really does sound similar.I guess I'll take it as a compliment cause that Angel Beats song sounds really nice! :DAaand also that's what I'm "scared" about when making music related stuff - you make something and then someone tells you that it sounds alike or that it's a ripoff when you thought you made something original :(
>>3814750Nice. I like how it evolves. Definitely get the "going through a storm" theme if that's what you intended. I esp like what starts at 1:20.
>>3755882I really like this! Mind if I use in a video, anon? It's a fighter jet going over Mt. Rainier flying through canyons.
>>3815090I feel your pain. I'm in the exact same situation, I've been playing around with FL studio for like a month now, I barely looked at any tutorials, it's been fun messing around with different sounds, but putting them all together into a coherent melody is another thing. This started off as me wanting to emulate synthwave, but somehow turned into some thing I can't even categorize.
>>3815691go for it
>>3815691in fact, have a higher quality version with downloadhttps://vocaroo.com/136XhIc4ygnm
>>3815090B-sections my dude! If I were you I would lay out your loop on the FL playlist and organize it in a structure. Check this video out I found this really helpful.https://youtu.be/NEy9L7zyrGE
>>3816198I find music theory really helps too. Please don't waste your time learning how to read it though. All you need to know is some basic chord structure and common progressions to get started. Then the melodies should emulate what the chords are playing in a way. This is my first Synthwave song I released. I made the drop first and had no idea where to go with it. What I did was lay the drop out on the FL playlist where I wanted it to drop and then I made myself think of how I wanted it to build to the drop. The rest came from there, it's not always linear. Just keep at it man https://youtu.be/Ry_SsYihpgU
>>3815200I belive you also need to change up the drumming just a little as the drums make it repetetive and a little switch in either the actual speed or change an octave up or down so it is not just the same
My latest release on SpotifyHere's the YouTube link:https://youtu.be/6j3TWF0vZEs
>>3817857The guitar solos were pretty cool, I liked that. Would've liked some more intensity on the synths though, came off a little too tame.

>>3821171Okay last post for now sorryI played with the quality as much as possible and got it so that the text is just readable
>>3821575is the entire point of this to make it sound cursed? if so it does relay that pretty well (doesnt sound good though sorry)
>>3817126mixing is pretty good, I also like the chill vibe. Though I feel like I want some more oomph/aggressiveness in the bassline.anyway this is my first attempt at, well, the opposite of chill - speedcore
>>3814523this sounds like good BGM to a technology-related video tutorial from a VHS tape
>>3771725cyberbird
>>3821778Is it the scale? Is it the arrangement of the notes? Is it the distortion I added to the piano? Is it the mixing? Too much reverb? It is supposed to sound cursed, most of the music I make sticks to jazz/blues like scales, but I want it to sound good too. I really need to know what's wrong, so I can feel even better about it after it's fixed.
>>3822209The thing that sticks out to me the most is the sound arrangement, it doesn't seem like any of the sounds come together into a coherent melody. I hear the all the individual sounds, but there is little to no harmony, they sound kind of flat despite the reverb, especially the drums and kicks. I would also like to hear more variation, whether it's in note arrangement or different scales.
>>3822374Thank you so much, I'm still learning after 5 years :)

>>3803823Nigger.
>>3815090what program is that?
>>3804161Well yes....but no.... I technically have the entire song made but I don't feel entirely comfortable with it yet, I do apologize
>>3814581So what you need is some synthwave sounds, lower the control filter and. For the ADSR, make the A is 0. High on d, low on S and high on r. I have no idea if that helps or not. Who knows, I might give out the FLP but I have to make sure I dont have any external VSTs in there. I think it's all internal plugins tho
This is more of a work in progress, but i don't really know where to go from here. I'd like it to be twice as long but I cant think of how to pad the length without just looping shit
How do I get into making music?I use Windows. I know no instruments, but I want to focus on making it digitally

also this one but idk if you made it
>>3838229I did make this one as well. Unfortunately I'm having issues with it. Idk why but when I listen to it in my DAW it hurts my ears. Essentially it is also finished. There is a small 10 second part that isnt and has been pretty much the sole reason why it hasn't been released
>>3838368darn i hope you can release it :C its really good
that feel when recently put out my first album but have no cool videos to post ITT
>>3838110That's really sick! Do you have any resources for learning how to properly use automation?
>>3838418No, self taught. Automatons are easy tho. Simply find what you want to change (internal plugins only) right click it (hit create automation clip) then from there draw out what you want to change over time by right clicking to create new points. For external it's the same thing except to create them initially is different. The process creates 2 automatons....idk why but it works. Simply change what you want to change and edit it. For example. You could adjust your control filter and edit it back. Then there is this knob at the top, right click it (hit create automatons clips) and it will create clips of the last 2 changeable items
>>3803509the guitars and bass I recorded myself. everything else is stock ableton samples.
>>3838824>>3803509except the horns that are from spitfire labs trumpet field and there is a synth in the background
>>3838418anon i actually like your song here, but you need to fix the vocal lines. some of them seem too soft ("gimme a hit") and some of the "swing it" and "i''m all there is" lines either aren't trimmed right and have too much audio left at the end or fade out oddly (too abruptly, maybe?). i think that the muted effect might be contributing to this. i also think you should add a fading reverb effect on the last "let's give a big hand for big band", because it just seems to appear then disappear.
dont know if a remix counts as "made yourself" but here it is anyway
>>3838014>>3838017this is hot, dude. The only critique is to dial back the reverb a bit because it sounds really crowded when everything is going on at once. still really neat though
>>3839197Thanks dude, I'll try that, clean it up a bit
Anyone can recommend me some free software to make music?I use audacity to edit audio, but I want something to make instument songs and stuff.(not really interested in pirated software, tryi g to be a legalfag here)

>>3839656seconding LMMS, I found the GUI quite easy to navigate, even though it's missing some feature.
>>3835005bitwig
My FL Studio started lagging and the sound crackling for no reason one time I launched it, and never stopped. Does anyone know how to fix this?
>>3843459Yes but it's the sound drivers fl is using. In general settings it should tell you what driver its using which should be set to Fl Studio Asio (or something like that) essentially just switch it to Asio(I cant remember what it's called but is along word that started with 'a') the options for that sound driver are in your system tray (bottom right hand corner of your screen, has like up arrow^ that shows hidden applications) you may have to figit in there to get to work if it doesnt work automatically. But after you have done this, eventually you can switch back to flstudio asio drivers and should be fine...until it crackles again
finished this a while, just remixed it to center the bass more... not sure it worked but I'm gonna post it anyway.
another older one I remixed recently
>>3844651>>3844680well hey thats why we post in these threads. (im assuming these both are yours). Its not bad, but imo it could use a bit more of a structure to it, like intro>buildup>drop>etc . As it is it feels a bit meandering but there are definitely sections that can be rearranged
>>3844751any specific advice? I am terrible at "structuring" songs.
>>3845299nothing specific for the stuff you posted, but here's a decent guide I found-https://www.careersinmusic.com/song-structure/I know it's more oriented to lyrical songwriting but the principles can still be applied to electronic stuff (think "drops" instead of choruses). The key is to have enough variation to move it from one portion to another.
>>3845299What do you want to make music for? "Meandering " as the other anon said works great as a soundtrack for games, maybe not as much ok a dance floor. I liked the ones you posted, they remind me of Raptor: Call of the shadows.
>>3845393Yeah I kinda try to make soundtrack-for-game type of music, or just stuff to listen to in the background. My biggest issue is I just kinda write what I feel until I get sick of it and then I wrap it up, sometimes at rather arbitrary points....>>3845349Pretty good guide, nothing I'm not familiar with anyway and what I already sort of try to do... I just get really bored of the whole ABABAC or ABACABA type of thing....I USED to do that when I wrote more "classical" style music but I felt lazy for reusing stuff instead of slowly evolving it. I like the idea of A, then B, then a few more letters, then synthesizing A and B or something like that in harmony for the final section as an "evolution"... but I don't put that into practice as much as I should.>The key is to have enough variation to move it from one portion to another. You mean transitions or just not being repetitive so that there are distinct sections of the song? Maybe it's just the fact that I use a DAW that has "blocks" of music on a grid now, instead of composing on a staff when I used Finale (basically MuseScore with nicer features) so the temptation to have repetitive elements that build on each other is greater.
Sampled Anri - Shyness Boy to make some type of Vaporwave/Trap Thing
>>3845744>You mean transitions or just not being repetitiveboth. keep in mind that things get stale after like 4 measures. remember that you can still re-write those "blocks" with some variations instead of looping them.
>>3846505Yeah I still struggle with that without just either layering harmonies or making minor variations that don't change enough. Making something really evolve slowly is hard for me, but I've been working on it so hopefully I'll get better.
>>3847411What helps me out is breaking songs into segments. As the great and wise Porter Robinson said in an interview, (this isnt exactly what he said btw) what can make a song so hard to make but also so special is having one part to help introduce another part, letting others know something else is coming and then introducing it" my advice is to create whole other sections instead of progressively making as whole song. That way instead of having part A. And then change it to A.1 and so on It can be A-A.1-A.2 - A.3 then B-B.1 and so on. You can even take A parts and use them for B and C. Dont know if that makes any sense but that's how I make music.
>>3793315Overall sounds pretty chill with a lingering feeling of nostalgia.
https://youtu.be/m-dieVtKkbghttps://youtu.be/w1W79GfJLiwI made this. I hope you enjoy my music. I also hope you get your dreams come true!
>>3847684That does make sense. I am kinda lazy where I Just write something and don't really work on the arrangement and I'm afraid to move huge blocks around eventhough I have the capability to do so fairly easily with my software...kind of a dumb hangup, but then again I often don't have a huge idea of where to move what.
>>3848920who knows m8, i might make a tutorial for ya on how to arrange a song, i know i did it for "how to make melodies"
here's is mine https://soundcloud.com/2edgylol/ignorant-memphis-rap-type-beat
Tried to post this yesterday but according to sys.4chan it was over 300 seconds
>>3853799What software u use for the video?
>>3854238Search for MIDITrail, should be first result.Export the channels of your project that you want to see as a midi file and open that in miditrail.Might be a good idea to turn off the sound output while recording, I used fraps to record it.If you use samples then you can just psuedo represent them with midi notes in the export.easy breezy
>>3854477Nice anon
>>3855747Watching your own music float past is kinda theraputic, I find. Also seeing all tracks progress together might help with compositional flow.
Not a single good song ITT.Why even bother?
>>3858627so we can get feedback to actually make good songs. it's not that complicated
>>3858906Nobody's posting for feedback here, let's not kid ourselves.
>>3859172Well if it's not feedback then it's vanity, but it's kind of presumptuous to just assume that don't you think?
>>3859172No one post here for feedback but it's nice to get. Fuck off with your nihilistic attitude because get we all get acne from it.
>>3751944ok
>>3862257That's a boppppCan you share your soundcloud?
>>3839716>>3839739>>3841389My first try, still learning how to use it...(it's actually a cover, so dunno if it count as made by myself, but I added the notes in the piano tab)
>>3863081Still learning and made some changes, it kinda sounds better for me but I would also appreciate opinions and critics.
>>3864120>>3863081it's pretty rudimentary but you do have a decent foundation here with that first organ track and bass. The melody is ok but only seems to find its footing at the 21st measure while 17-20 are not exactly pleasant to listen to. Rework its establishment a bit, maybe make it less complicated or even use that run you used leading into measure 29.I get you're brand new at this so It's ok to not have masterpieces right out the gate. ultimately practice will get you to the point where things gel better.
>>3866101Thank you for the reply, sadly I don't have enough knowledge to understand most of it (I don't even know what establishment or footing means, or even what a melody is) but I also think now that it doesn't sound right from 17 to 20, so I will keep practicing (and watching more tutorials for basics of music).
I only write melodiesWhat's the next thing i should focus on?
>>3869202>i only write melodies>but still writes a base line and a harmony
>>3869202Chords are just FAT melody notes, same as how there are 7 notes in a scale, there are 7 chords n a scale but some are major and some are minor, play major and minor chords over your melodies until they sound good, simple triads at first with some inversions to help it flow better, if you are having trouble figuring out what to use just stick to the 1 (tonic chord) the 3 (is major in the minor scale and minor in the major scale so it gives the opposing chord flavor) the 5 (dominant chord, wants to resolve to the 1 tonic chord, 5 to 1 is considered the perfect cadance) and the 7 (most tense chord, use for most tense parts), the minor pentatonic scale is 13457 for that reason, 4 is basically the subdominant, and it can be a dominant chord in a pinch, if it has to. So to start I'd say write a pentatonic minor melody using only 13457, and only the 13457 scales possibly using 2 and 6 to help you climb to nearby chords. Finally, download 909 drum samples and mess with those drum sounds to make a beat :3
>>3869202i like this
>>3778664this is very nice. great vibes.
>>3870180alright maybe you dont have to use 909, you can use any drum kit, but the way to think about drums is that they have no real pitches except for the toms, so all the power comes from the rhythm and spacing. The kick is the fundamental so it holds the groove, you want it to hold the most consistent pattern or rhythm and if no other sounds are playing just play a steady kick. The snare holds the energy so use it for rolls and use quieter or louder snare hits to sell the lower or higher energy. The Toms give variety for fills, when the snare feels stale hit the high, mid and low toms for occasional pitch changes. The cymbal CRASH is for those special sound stabs to change a section or such. Drums are the easiest thing to recognize in a song besides the melody so listen to drum heavy music like metal or DnB and really pay attention to how the drums use rhythm to make those limited sounds make you wanna dance. https://youtu.be/u5BJsRHuhaI
>>3869418My music is a melody line then slap a chord on it. I don't know how to make those rhythmic non melodic sections that alot of music ITT uses. Idk where to go next, maybe some anons had a similar problem.>>3870180>>3870227Interesting stuff, I never thought about kicks and snares like that. I'll definitely try to figure out how to make drum beats and fills. And yeah, a lot of my melodies are just pentatonic fuckery. One of my favorite things to abuse.

>>3870180>>3870227blessed music theory anon
>>3775592What's the song? I like it.
>>3870847I mean the song is what you hear in the video. I made it while fucking around in FL and figured it would make a good gondola track
>>3761262Really odd. Kinda spooky but I liked it.
>>3762633If you can't be bothered to put it in a webm why would I be bothered to go to YouTube to see it.No chance.
>>3770062Yeh SoundCloud this so I can listen to it properly pls. I love it.
>>3869202how do you come up with these melodies anon. i can sit looking and playing with fl for hours and nothing but absolute cheese comes out
>>3875281It's heavily improvised on my keyboard but the trick is to start with a idea (melodic phrase is the formal term) and then develop it, repeat it or contrast it with a different idea.I must've written over 50+ melodic ideas which are either "melody blocks" or "ending melodies". Once I pick a melody block it goes off from there with improv and then I pick an ending melody. The rest is just connecting the two. Some of them sound great, some just don't. Here's what my favorite ones look like (assuming you know scale degrees and have mastered scales)1-7-5-3 (over I or IV chord) descending5-1-2-3 (descending and ascending)3-4-51-6-5(Btw I think this is an actual approach used by jazz musicians called musical vocabulary. But I don't know much about that yet.)In webm related I specifically had one phrase and one ending melody in mind, 3-4-3-1-5 and 4-3-1-6-5 (ripped off from nichijou ED). Focusing on just phrases helps make ideas more interesting and endings more satisfying IMO. Other useful stuff is I'm ear trained to the point where I can write down or play a song just by listening to it once or twice, which depends on your skill on recognizing chord progressions and scale degrees by ear. 8-bit music theory has the best melody tutorials and I still use his antecedent consequent period video to structure my songs. That's just how it works best for me anyways, some composers don't even know what notes they're using. But my background is analyzing and transcribing piano music to upload to utube for views so the music theory approach feels natural to me.
>>3876923i wanna know how you can obviously understand music to this degree but you can't into layering a rhythm section or a baseline or transitioning or structuring. What exactly do you struggle with?
>>3877139>you cant intoplease go back
>>3870543very nice, especially the latter part. if the top line is supposed to be melodic, then i think it should be louder; if it's not, then maybe you don't need the top line.
>>3870227anon, you definitely need the drums to match a certain pitch - all parts really do have a pitch and if it doesn't match a key part of the song, it can sound either distinct or dissonant.
>>3877208back to where exactly?
>>3767703Has a nice 80s vibe. Well done!
>>3800307soulful new composer.
>>3877139i guess most of my theory knowledge came from transcribing music, never really tried DAWs and original stuff until recently, so not much experience there. But riffs rhythm fills or whatever those loops are I'm interested in now.
Directed at no one in particular, but for new people I suggest to add more rhythmic interest to melodies by shortening some notes, stretching other notes, using melody embellishments like escape tones, anticipations, etc. so some parts of the melodies move faster and others move slower, often what kills a melody is all the notes being played at the same speed and same length so the only variety is in pitch, rhythm can be the one thing that makes a melody work, like in uh, darude sandstorm. If you took that melody and played all the notes at the same speed/length, its actually not that interesting of a melody, but by having some notes play much faster and other notes last longer it gives it an interesting sense pacing, like a constant stop and go that gives the melody a sense of rhythm that carries the song.
>>3837196dang one month later and no feedback :,^(
>>3837196Look up MGMTs new album. Gives me that kind of vibe. Personally I think the snare should have less decay on it. Like make it shorter/more impactful. But then again idk what you are trying to do with it. I think it would go decent with vocals but only if the snare changed
I am a music producer with a major Korean label and I am here to sample your torrented FL caveman sounds
>>3882865sweet. Looking forward to hearing it in your kpop shit
>>3882865what software do u guys use?
>>3882865Our wat now?
>>3785950Really enjoyed this, anon - I feel like with this revised version it's almost there. From me as the listener, I find myself wanting more padding on the drums after a certain point, just something to make it a little snappier. Also, some bass diversion would be good as well, maybe towards the latter half. The main meolody is a little subdued and each new section that kicks in still feels like it's only background melody, like it's muted. Sort of like a palm muted guitar riff that never comes out of the palm muted section, if that makes sense. None of the main sounds pop out at me enough.I'm not able to explain myself in a technichal way, so sorry if any of that sounds confusing, but this is how it feels to me. I can almost sense that you're holding back a little too hard and I feel like letting that go could make this a fucking great track.
>>3870543Not keen on the addition of the snare to the drums and the sustained synth notes. Feels like they are fighting with the energy of the drums and the main tune and it's unpleasant.
I feel like this tutorial was the best in helping me to understand chord progressions, covers many genres and chord types and I didn't understand them well until I saw thishttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSEWUwVTgNc
