Welcome to the /wsg/ Aviation General Thread.Post anything to do with aviation. GA, military, helicopters, anything that get's us from A to B through the skies.I'll kick things off with three vids. Happy Flying.

>>3500886I assume you're that guy who posted some OC on aviation threads a few years back? Nice to see you're still around.
>>3503238this is cool as shit. I always wondered what a sonic boom sounded like from high altitude. I wonder what even faster planes like the MiG-25 and SR-71 were like.
>>3502714You betcha>>3503232I sure am, I hope something I've posted previously has brought some measure of entertainment. Have some more OC from last fall

>>3505029It's not too often that the world gets to see a man live his life to the fullest and go out on his terms doing something spectacular. The sad reality is that most of us will die in a bed, decrepit, feeble, and all but forgotten doing nothing but reflecting on the choices we made. Sky King died living with the choice he made and in the process of reaching his end lived more than most of us will live during our many years on this earth. We all should be so lucky.
>>3503495honestly its things like this that inspire me to be an aviator
>>3512622I hope I can provide a bit of motivation. Although I consider my job a teaching job more than a flying job I really do enjoy it sometimes, and it brings me a great sense of satisfaction to share my enthusiasm for aviation with others. Have a sunset departure from KTUS with arriving traffic above us

>>3522318RIP his prop.Water and gravel/small rocks are fucking killers.
>>3508438Is there any better livery than the jolly rogers on an F-14?
>>3522673Honestly get ready to learn. The first few months as a CFI you will learn more than you ever did getting your CFI by far. Not only that, but it doesn't stop; I've been teaching full time for about a couple years and not a day goes by I don't learn something new. Some things that I've picked up along the way:>never assume a student knows anything>never assume a student is going to (or not going to) do something >there is always another way to teach something>no two students learn the same>the same error may have different causal factors>be patient with them, they know not what they do>don't be afraid to fail them, its what they need sometimes>try to emphasize what they did well; small successes go a long way to improving self esteem>sometimes they need an ego check, its a part of learning (this goes for you too)>students will find new and exciting ways to fuck up, so be prepared to handle it>there are only errors of procedure, and errors of fundamentals; everything else can be traced to one of the two>student's can tell when you don't know what you're doing, and trying to hid it doesn't helpalso remember to land on the mains first and nose second.
>>3523425i went through 2 different flight instructors during my about a year in flight school before i got outmy first one had been doing it a while but went off to the airlinesthe second one was fresh so i will touch on my experience with him based on the points you posted>never assume a student knows anythingthe guy had me get in the plane about 5-8 different times for 2 hours at a time when i first swapped to him only for him to FINALLY realize that i didnt know what the hell he was asking me to do (my previous flight instructor did not show me shit about using VORs or navigating with them or without the gps at all and was satisfied with the fact that i could navigate in certain areas near the airport since i knew all the local roads)>never assume a student is going to (or not going to) do somethingflight instructor again insisted that i performed a landing i did not know how to do and i told him i did not know how to do - i ended up being like 5 knots above stall speed and maybe 5-10 feet above the lights>be patient with them, they know not what they doafter losing most all of my motivation but still continuing to attend the flight school with instructor 2, we got in the air one day. i slightly missed the requirements for the maneuver a few different times then flew around for a bit at level flight and at a reasonable speed. the guy started chewing me out about how i was "trying to kill him" (and had said that once or twice in the past few flights i almost completely stopped scheduling) and immediately stopped the flight. never stopped to tell me what i did wrong, just got on the ground and acted like a hardass like he always did without ever trying to fix the core problem with my mistakes. i quit flight school after that>try to emphasize what they did wellit means more than you think it ever will. always gave me a lot of motivation. instructor 1 did a really good job of it and always had me wanting to go fly more. 2 only ever shit on me
>>3526236although i may have soloed after about my first 10 flights, i dont regret getting out and not having to put up with the bullshit and extreme lack of free time. i decided to go into a different field and i enjoy it a lot more.

>>3528755It really fucking HURTS that we never got the big D. A glass cockpit FBW equipped Tomcat that can sling both Phoenixes and 120s with it's fuck hueg radar would have been the greatest thing to happen to the fleet. Faster than the Super Hornet, more fuel than the Super Hornet, and far more aesthetic than the Super Hornet. Peak US air power aesthetic is Tomcats and Eagles. The F-15 lives on and will for quite some time. The F-14 should have lived longer and become the aircraft she deserved to be.

>>3541590I have been searching high and low far and wide for that video for ages, it looks like such a relaxing and nice documentary/clip.Every other WVR clip now is just rock music over footage with 1000 cuts between two jets doing underwhelming maneuvers.
Can anyone help me find a vid? It's about a F-15 chasing a F-5. One great scene was the F-15 flying directly behind the F-5 with its air-brake on. It was a shot from the front of the planes & showed how small F-5 compared to the F-15.Thanks.

Can a helicopter break mach 1 even theoretically?
>>3583824The issue is that the helicopter would have to have blades that could generate lift at supersonic speeds. With current technology if a helicopter's advancing blade breaks the sound barrier the airflow delaminates and the helicopter experiences a blade stall. This is the main reason a Chinook is limited in airspeed. If blades were developed such that they could operate supersonically then we could have modern helicopters operate at much greater speeds. Pretty much helicopters are experiencing now the same problems fixed wing aircraft faced with the development of jet engines.
>>3583967I get it now. Thanks.
>>3583967>>3584655I think what you meant to say was that the reason helicopters can't go mach is because of retreating blade stall. As the helicopter builds up speed, the blade that is advancing into the forward moving air generates more lift. But the blades on the other side of the helicopter that are retreating towards of the back of the helicopter loose lift.Eventually the blades on the retreating side completely looses lift and the helicopter rolls over.

>>3585296I suppose the issue was I was being a little narrow minded because I only had the Chinook, a tandem rotor helicopter in mind. Which actually got me curious about RBS in tandem rotors. Apparently tandem rotor helicopters don't experience the typical roll associated with RBS but rather an increase in drag and vibrations.

>>3583824Certainly, if you fired one out of a cannon.
>>3587010That was some real initial d shit. I wonder, can the AN-225 do that too?
>>3594261>Yes, but they were never put to cool fancy beatsI do not understand you anon, do you think that's the original video? the video and music is playing along with if not making fun of their absurd statement, that's all it is. neither the webm nor the original was glorifying shooting down airliners (at the very least it's minorly showing off a piece of military hardware) it's just supposed to be funny. I get that it's edgy but considering how long ago it was I fail to see how it's in any worse taste than the vast majority of content you find on the internet and this site. >and had some narrator act edgy by saying "In both cases their flights were terminated".The narrator sounds direct because that's simply how russians translating english can come off sometimes, but usually they don't intend to come off as harsh. but that doesn't matter because I thought it was a ridiculous statement to make about downing civilian airliners, which is the statement the webm is making... Maybe you think I'm a tankie or whateverthefuck? Or are you offended or something? I'm spitballing because I just don't get your thinking at all anon, no offense.
>>3530851Not sure if you could make a living flying in Idaho, but as someone from north Idaho (Sandpoint ID) I can tell you small prop planes (like>>3530645) are extremely common. >>3519902He's championed by broken men that inhibit four channel. He's championed ... for several reasons. There's at least two problems at play here. 1. Broken men, who can not in this society ask for help, as they'll be exploited, and marginalized. In brief, seeking mental help or therapy to resolve trauma - you are a fuckup that couldn't hack it. Seeking to end self-hatred, or even admitting it, or trying to discuss constructive ways of solving it is a sign of weakness. And weakness is exploited. And broken men are already expoited enough - this was a baggage handler ffs - they don't need more exploitation by the society, and hence they never open up or solve these problems. 2. Because these broken men have felt only pain and lack of hope, and have not been offered attention, respect, kindness, or love by anyone, they choose to reject society. Why belong to something that you do not identify with? They abandon society's heros, and make their own heroes: people who are broken fuckups like themselves, who choose to take a stand, do something daring. Consider people like Ghandi, or MLK -- they fill their followers with hope. A hope for a better future, an inspiration to act in a way wherein their pain can end someday. Heroes exist to make the now bearable, and promise a future where pain does not exist. Sky King is their hero because it offers them a glimpse of hope: where suicidal sufferring may end one day. Sky King is their hope - out of exploitation by society, out of self-hatred, out of suicidal ideation. And by you insulting him, you are denying a human being what it needs more than food, water, shelter, or self-actualization: you are denying hope. Be careful with your words. When human beings don't have hope: EVERY single activity is of equal merit -- torturing idiots posting stupid shit on image boards included. Rest in peace Sky King.

>>3519902He killed himself on his own terms while most of us stay alive on someone else's terms. It's hard to say briefly, but in his last hour or so alive he was freer than most people will be in their entire lives, living entirely according to his own desires and by his own hands: Flying a plane on a sightseeing trip without any regard for the litany of rules that govern flying, without any need to fear losing his job, without any respect for the property rights of the airline, etc.As for him killing himself, it put him out on a high note. These sorts of gross violations of social rules, company regulations, and federal law only ever end in two ways: in a jail cell or in a graveyard. Watching him go through the process of being tried, sentenced and sent to jail would make an example of him, of what happens to people who break the rules and flout the law. You don't get that if he kills himself: If he kill himself the story ends at the moment of his greatest possible freedom. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that it's good, or right, or even desirable that people should live like that: A lot of the rules and laws that restrict people's freedom of action exist for very good reasons. But when you feel like you're not in control of your own life wouldn't you look at a man who just wants to roll his airplane with envy?
