>>2205888im assuming many of you who post in these threads us linux as your main OS how is it to make the switch from windows and also is really better as main OS
>>2205889sauce on the background image?
>>2207547popOS if your looking to just ditch windows, but don't want to learn anything
>>2207547hey anon, I just ditched windows and installed manjaro as my main system after using windows for 10 years. I am really happy with all the utilities linux has to offer and I am excited to learn more about the system so I can 'harness' it's full potential. It is really easy to install but mind you that if you have a second hard drive you are going to have to format it before switching over and repartition it later cause windows reserves almost the entire disk with one partition. Good luck anon and remember, fuck microsoft
>>2207547Depends what you primarily do with your main OS. If you are primarily gaming, just keep your windows install handy because while Linux gaming has come a long way, you will just be frustrated at some of the incompatibilities. Same if your job or hobby extensively involves certain windows exclusive software. But for the most part, web browsing, videos, programming, etc will be seamless and better than windows. If you got an old laptop lying around installing Linux on it and getting the feel of it is great for a beginner. Kubuntu or Manjaro are probably good for a first distro since they are made to just work and have a similar look and feel to windows.
>>2207587>>2207586For fucks sake stop recommending Manjaro, going full autist here. The Arch stable repos are synced into Manjaro Unstable on a roughly daily basis. They sit there for 1-2 weeks before being declared stable and moving to Manjaro Testing. Then their test squad declares that stable enough to move to Manjaro Stable, about 3-4 weeks after the packages arrive in Arch Linux. And this is the issue. There is four weeks until Manjaro users get package updates. That is still a lot quicker than a non-rolling release distribution I hear you say, but it ignores one of the fundamentals of a rolling release distribution. Security fixes come with a new software release. On a fixed-point release distribution, security fixes are backported into your out-of-date software versions to maintain stability. On a rolling release distribution, you just release the newer version of the software that comes with most security fixes (some backporting from the upstream VCS is required if a release is not made). That means, Manjaro users are vulnerable to security bugs for around a month after Arch users are safe, unless of course the Manjaro Core Team monitors every package and pushes those with security fixes. How many packages in a distribution? Arch Linux has >6000 in its binary repositories. I suppose it is not impossible to monitor that many packages, unless of course your Core Team consists of three people. And given those three people provide five variants of their installation ISO (net install, XFCE, KDE, Cinnamon, MATE – with OpenBox and E17 on the way…) and provide a series of kernel packages and systemd… Things are looking bleak.
>>2207594You should be complaining on /g/ then, I mean im not saying you are wrong but Arch is a pretty bad choice to ease someone in with no experience in Linux. Its the whole reason Ubuntu and its various flavors are still the most noob friendly, easy to install and works out of the box. Sure they may be bloated, contain proprietary components, etc, but its better than windows and a good way for people with no experience to acclimate outside of windows.
>>2207601I'm not recommending arch, I'm saying steer clear or Manjaro. PopOS, Elementary, Fedora, MX Linux, are all fantastic choices for a new user
>>2207602Woman, but big

>>2207594>And given those three people provide five variants of their installation ISO (net install, XFCE, KDE, Cinnamon, MATE – with OpenBox and E17 on the way…)This is irrelevant and just confirms you have no idea what you're talking about.>Things are looking bleak. So you're just assuming, without any proof?

>>2209233how do you have a fully transparent taskbar?
>>2209652No worries, anon. I use Openbox, which is a window manager for Linux. Window managers are far more customizable than desktop environments, at the cost of the time and effort to make it work the way you like. The other anon you replied to is using Windows 7, which I'm not familiar with customization for - I hope you find an answer though!

Which Window Manager is recommended for retards like me? To be honest it's something totally new for me, but I wanted to give it a try.
>>2210379An easy one would be fluxbox, or lxde, or mwm (win3 look/behavior)
>>2210446>lxde>lightweight x desktop environmentit uses openbox as it's wm, but i agree on fluxbox, icewm is also great for most, it's as easy as a de, but as light as a wm.

>>2208599send wallpaper, thank you
>>2210824Well, that "clock" is just the ncmpcpp, a mpd client. Used for playing the musics that you have on the mpd server. >>2210911Just changed the fonts on the fly so I could show how low the specs of the computer that I'm running this system is. They're actually the same when normal using.>>2210954That's because I'm just showing the fonts/color of the terminal. In normal using I wouldn't be putting the ncmpcpp on the clock view. I'll print an example of how I use the workspace where the ncmpcpp and ranger are kinda fixed./================/For the lads that are new to the linux world, I'm using an Arch Linux, i3wm-gaps as WM and the rest is personal configuration that you put just what you need/like. I recomend to the newcomers to use picom, as you can give opacity to most of the terminals and windows, and the picom is so powerful that the "--experimental-backend" flag even removed my tearing screen that the old and cheap intel chipset was giving me. I'll post another print to make it clear. And for those that wanna try some twm, it's pretty good but isn't "super necessary and high productive increase" as some say. But is really nice to have your own shortcuts and moving around the windows/workspaces has another feeling, that's undeniable. I tried it out because right now I'm with a really low end machine, but I'm buying new parts to build a better one and not changing back to a DE, that's for sure.Forgot to mention that you learn a lot about computers (actually OS) as you start setting your own environment, so if you're into IT as a career or hobby, definitely a good way to learn something about it.
>>2210973So, basically I don't use much this workspace, most of the times to change music if listening to something or move/copy bunch of files since I prefer using the ranger instead of cp/mv to do that when involves lots of files.>>2210954Really nice colors btw, never seen a "mac like" design so beautiful before.
>>2210824I did not understand your question properly, but I'm assuming you mean the powerline, google "powerline-shell" and you'll have what you want. Or you can use the zsh with the oh-my-zsh that I guess has this feature by default. Just got too lazy to adapt all my bash functions/configs to zsh,
