What is better, grid or non-grid?
>>
>>854541
Non-grid is slightly better especially considering things like roads, but both are fine if done well and grids are certainly far easier to do well.

Grid. funny how many idiots thing grid is bad when all cities and towns that aren't ased on grids are a traffic nightmare even for their small populations and how even back in Roman times when new cities and colonies where being built they did everything on a grid due to how much more efficiant it is.

Is public transport useless on NAM?
my average bus stop gets 500 users in a 180k city, meanwhile on vanilla half the population were using it

Bus stops can still be handy as a revenue source though. 10% of my city's gross revenue is from public transport.

I can get about 1000-2000 users on a bus stop by plopping them near high density slums.
>>
>>859149
I use whatever the main mod for 4 is and everyone has a mass transit preference, for some reason. Vanilla always sucked for me.
Are your workplaces receiving commuters from a place without buses? Do all of your bus stops get used or are some of them disconnected from the road network somehow?

I wish air pollution went down when people used mass transit or trains.

Can other games join? Bought this game called MMORPG Tycoon 2 a long time ago and started getting in to it. It's still in early access and it's pretty high concept, but it's pretty fun. Pretty much you have to make your own MMORPG and make all the lands, quests, NPCs and classes. Has a ton of customization and details to decorate your lands and a pretty janky NPC maker that is a bit fun to play around with.

First time getting back into city builder games since playing SimCity 4 as a kid. About 60 hours into this city so far.
The city has no zoned industrial or industrial districts. And yes there's local bus routes for getting pops to transit stops.

Simcity 4 with the oldshoes modpack is the ol' reliable. Solid overall and extremely comfy. Cities: Skylines has more freedom in terms of placement and such which makes it great for aesthetic projects. Gameplay wise it's very easy and ends up more of a traffic management game than a city builder. They're both fun and worth playing though. I suggest you buy Cities: Skylines main game and use cream.api to pirate all the DLC.

Menus/UI are identical to the Nintendo Switch version. You can scale the UI though so it looks better on a PC's resolution.

Playing with a mouse takes some getting used to after Nintendo Switch. I found laying down tracks much quicker using a mouse compared to a controller but your experience might vary.

Overall, the game runs a lot better on a PC than the Switch. My PC copy runs at maximum settings with no lag.

Playing Timberborn for the first time and made a little dam at this little pond like area.
The drought came in and the lake went dry in like a quarter of a day.
Is that be design or just an oversight?
I thought this pocket of water would last at least for a few days.
>>
>>882126
Anyway. My entire colony ended up wiping. I think this was the 4th-5th cycle. Not sure cuz I'm half dead from staying up so late(it's 4am rn)
I was baking on this fucking piece of shit to give me at least a day's worth of water and irrigation for my potato farm. Which my potatoes would have finished in a day and all my beavers died of both hunger and thirst literally right as the drought ended.
>>
>>882126

Lel.
A 40+ long block stretch of river might last one pump a few days, but I wouldn't count on it. Pumps slurp up water REALLY fast.
>>
>>882126
If you don't pump the water out, the pond lasts about 5 days; enough to get another harvest from the fields around there.
>>
>>882134
>>882126

You never skip leg day in this city, because if you do they'll never find your body if you can't outrun somebody in the deep dark tunnels.

Here is a very common sight. A distant neighborhood connecting a more inner suburb neighborhood and an industrial district. Every white dot is another car that doesn't get in the way of industry. I don't have a single specialized industry in this city at all. There's no tourism either. All that money I'm making is simply from people getting out of the damn way of the industry trucks. Literally just efficiency money. And that's with an extensive metro, bus and trolley system connecting the city with free public transport.

This one little spot eats up over 30 FPS from a city average of 60 FPS because every single cim in the whole area now has to use this one bus stop to go elsewhere. First, 88% is fine. However, there are some serious problems that'll help now if you alleviate them and will kneecap your traffic later if you don't.
As for the actual traffic itself:
Metro stations should be located on the side of the road where most people are going to/coming from. This minimizes the amount of people that have to cross the street, which will obviously hold up vehicular traffic. The lines themselves also need to have much gentler curves so that the trains can get up to speed and not have to slow down as much.
You need more connections with your roads and fewer dead ends. I can see that you're trying to not have too many connections onto your collectors to avoid hampering traffic flow along them. What you need to do is make connections wherever they make sense and have the local roads have stop signs where they meet the collector. This will prioritize the traffic flow along the collectors while still giving good connectivity. Additionally, try to merge intersections where it makes sense and isn't prohibitive. If you can easily connect a road to a preexisting intersection then you should do so (a few examples circled in pink).

The whole situation was caused like a domino effect. I changed the roundabout to the left into a highway section and changed some roads around it. This deleted sidewalks and a couple skybridges. In the time it took for me to fix that problem, this pedestrian issue was building up over here in this unrelated suburb to the right.
The train station area was made with that shitty neighborhood from Tony Hawk Underground in mind. I just might try to make a replica of that whole map somewhere in the city.

With the steam sale I gave in and bought Cartel Tycoon and New City. Haven't played too much of either other than the tutorials but I did enjoy both, gonna focus mainly on New City since this is more for ccity building.

Anywho, I don't really like the style of the UI. UI is absolutely awful and a bit confusing and the tutorial doesn't teach you about a lot of features like how to control density or how to toggle on/off grid and setting up transport lines. It's very basic but I guess it's still EA so I'm assuming it will be updated later. Style I don't really like either. I get it's trying to be retro but it still lacks a lot of detail and personality. Even the older SimCity games despite it's age had some nice details, animations and color to them. This game is very drab. But even still I had fun with it and will continue to play a bit more. I like the buildng and it does have quite more depth than I thought it was going to have. I like how you can build off the grid and how they handle the grid as well thought a bit disapointing that you can't really make curved roads. Curved roads are more like EXTREAMLY blockly circles, but I guess it is better than nothing. It's on sale right for $8 so it might be worth suppoting.

how are you dealing with people not randomly working? It's a glitch in the game whenever a sim is still out in a certain time period and not making home to sleep. My city always devolve into a clusterfuck because of this. Is there any mod to fix it?

Mods for Societies? I've played it since before I had internet so I forgot to even check. I just survive somehow. Enough sims get back to their cheap houses and go to their high yield jobs. Sim City 3k Unlimited is what you really want. It's on the easier end of the difficulty curve but still has plenty of options and soul.

If you've got money to burn or are willing and able to pirate: Cities Skylines. If you're a quick learner or looking for something a bit more true to life you can start with the realistic population 2, lifecycle rebalance revisited, and rebalanced industries mods. 81 tiles mod is something literally everyone should have. If you want to get a bit more in the weeds you can look at using the mods node controller renewal, traffic manager president edition, and move it.
Of course there's the classic of SimCity 4. For that you should get the network addons mod. There's some modpacks that you could get, but I'm not as well versed with the mods of SC4 as I am with CS. You'll probably have to go digging around elsewhere.

Been playing a lot of Newcity while I work from home. Still pretty bare bones and rough but has some cool stuff. Kind of worth supporting right now if you are interested in it.

PROS:
>Big focus on large scale building and planing. Not like cities where you have to unlock squares and shit.
>Sims have age, education level and schedual off the bat.
>lots of options for road type and sizes
>off the grid placment of roads.
>mod support
>Lots of graphics and overlays to view everything.

CONS
>unoptimized as fuck
>Density is really dumb. You have a slider between 0 and 10. No idea what the full difference is between the numbers.
>You can not control lot sizes so have fun making your nice, well planed out roads and hoods only to have a giant ass building be on the wrong side of everything and fuck up the look of everything.
>Parks and entertainment is really weird and kind of cool but I'm still puttng it here. There are premade parks and shit but there aren't many options. There is also a zone for parks as well. Park zones don't generate anything but give off the same stats of park buildings. Nice to create large open fields for the smaller residential areas or for grand parks but there are no decorations or paths for them so you are just left with an open field.

I've been trying to just remove all non service non-industry cars by banning them and replacing it with public transport and have still run into traffic flow problems. Largely because of busses though, busses clog streets and even with bus lanes in a lot of places just ends up slowing down stuff like service and emergency vehicles unless you have huge multi-lane highway roads through everything.
Adding an underground railway does help a fuckton but really trams were the biggest, best replacement. just running them on a grid with some short bus connections in places.

At first I was relieved the earthquake happened way out at the edge of the map in the water. Then I remembered what happens next. Biloxi is about to get Fukushima'd. Luckily my nuclear power plant isn't on the sea.
I was honestly wondering when the random events would start. This is the first for this map. I thought it was bugged.

>tfw I like SimCity 3000, SimCity 4 and Cities Skylines

3000 is simple in a good way and has colorful art. Doesn't need mods, if anything I wish you could combine all the building styles in one for more variety.

4 allows the most realistic cities, and while it needs the most time put into it, it's also the most rewarding game by far. Mods are handy, not required, but handy.

Skylines is nice when you just feel like making a big city fast. It's a city painter true, but I don't think that's a bad thing. That said, mods are needed perhaps most of all here. Skylines can look very lovely when done right.

All are good in their own way. I play SImCity 4 the most lately but that's because it more or less loads the fastest for me and I'm trying to finish a small region as is. I think choosing between these three is a matter of taste, all have their own specific strengths.
>>
>>904079
for Cities DLC just get the expansion ones: After dark, mass transit, snowfall, natural disasters, park life, green cities and industries, campus is so-so but if you want it for completition sake, go ahead.

ignore everything called radio station or content creator styles, since mods for those are abundant.

>Or should I just get good at Simcity 4

that's an option too, but first you have to install some mods.
>>
>>904079
Sim city 4 is a true sandbox game skylines has limits. the region mode in sim city 4 sets it apart the size of your city is as big as you want it. Aside from the size difference sim city has a depth that skylines lacks. In skylines poor people don’t exist you can’t have an underfunded polluted run down neighborhood where theres protests over the school budget and riots caused the garbage piling up in the streets. Theres just more you can do in sim city 4 Molding certain parts of your region by messing with the taxes Having your slums your rich areas, shopping districts or downtown offices. And with nam you can build any roadway you want. Sim city feels more alive.

You can build cities like this in sim city 4 you can’t in skylines

You verbosed your way into a paragraph that only says one thing: slums. Then
>You can build cities like this in sim city 4 you can’t in skylines
Which is false. These mechanics you mention are not in Skylines but of all things to compare, you basically chose a nonargument. You'd get A's in highschool English class but you ultimately said nothing. Skylines is a population management sim at heart. It interests those who enjoy optimization. While Skylines is simpler at a glance, it has greater depth in what it does do than compared to SC4. The opposite of your strange, strange statement is more true. I'm sure a determined player could do things in both games that can be done in the other, but the bottom of the line is that SC4 doesn't care about population or traffic or optimization, while CS does. CS is much easier to start but it is also easier to stagnate without decent layouts. In SC4 your layout is all aesthetics while also being restricted by the stifling service radius, which doesn't exist in CS.
They do different things. The population of 4chan these days is probably mostly highschoolers anyway, but fags like me still exist to call out bullshitters like you who throw around teenager arguments. You didn't do anything wrong. I simply want to tell you to shut the fuck up and think before you post; "What am I saying?" should be the thought before every post. You aren't articulate enough to put to word the subtle differences between the games without looking like you have no idea what you're talking about. You're just stirring up shit with your ignorance, when these threads are all about celebrating the great games we have access to today. Stop saying one is better than the other, or putting specific games down.
Don't reply.

Yo are you mad did I bully your video game? I’m I ignorant and all video games were created equal.

What did I say that was wrong? Did skylines implement regions into the game where you can expand exponentially? Is their different classes rich poor mansions and rundown houses? Simtropolis is still active strong modding community. Sim city has sovl. I was just answering the guys question what I thought was a better city builder to start with. Sim city 4 runs on almost anything cheap or a new paradox game that requires tons of dlc. Ones way better bang for your buck
>>
>>904279
Why are you acting like an English teacher while simultaneously criticizing English teachers? There's this bizarre schizophrenia that develops through anonymous posting sometimes, and you have it in spades.

Either way, Skylines' supposed depth is through micro intensive optimization of the game designer's shitty broken traffic system and mods. It's not a city building game. It's a gardening game for people who need their airports to look exactly like airports do IRL, omgpog onionsface. It's true that SC4 also had broken traffic at launch, but at least SC4's broken traffic didn't ruin the entire game. In Skylines, the traffic is the game. It's all the game is for. It only looks good in comparison to the dogshit that was Simcity 2013. It's basically Cities in Motion 3 pretending otherwise.

People who love Skylines shouldn't be city planners, they should be middle managers because middle management and logistics officers is what Skylines trains you to be. Deal with it.

Buildings only have 5 upgrade levels.
Wealth and density go up each stage.
DING noise plays to tell player they did a good thing. This is necessary because you can't tell at a glance if the new building is better than the old one.

Meanwhile, Simcity 4 has 8 upgrade levels.
Wealth and density upgrade across 2 dimensions. It's possible to only upgrade land value and not density to get mansions. Or upgrade density and not land value to get high density social housing.
It's obvious what type of people live in a certain neighborhood based on architectural style and massing only. No DING noise required.

stay under budget strictly, don't build a fire department until you have a fire, don't build a police department until crime is a serious problem etc, the default budget settings will work for a good while until you'll know what should be adjusted and you probably shouldn't fuck with them much, and the most important stat in the game is property value

4 is complicated but it's not nearly as hard as 1 or 2000 where early mistakes or bad luck can make you lose quickly

I don't think it looks that mobile gamey, at least not as much as the pharaoh remake is now. It was casual at release because there wasn't anything that could go wrong but since the 1.2 update fires, diseases and riots/strikes have been added. The next update is gonna add religious festivals and gods to worship. Perhaps there's also going to be consequences if you neglect some gods. It could also be that relations with other cities change depending on what gods you worship. For now the game is mostly a more modern, user friendly and a bit easier impression game copy. Other cities can't attack you, as there is no combat in the game, I haven't played all the missions but I've also never seen a royal request for some goods. The game is fun though and it isn't easy to evolve lots of houses to the higher levels but there is very little disruptions once you get your town on track.

What's a good base tax rate for Sim City 4? I read online that you should have 12 for low wealth, 11 for mid, 10 for high, but I did that and had fuck all demand and the financial woman kept telling me off. Have the latest Nam pack installed but don't know if that makes a difference.
>>
>>910372
Depends on the area and what you want. If you want to plan a downtown commercial office district drop the taxes on office buildings and max out commercial services so only office buildings will grow there. If you want a high tech industrial area jack up the taxes on any other kind of industry. With residential areas I’ll play with taxes usually I’ll drop the rich down so I have nice areas where I have high end commercial services and mansions maybe a few higher density condos. You don’t need to mess with the tax rate that much in the beginning at least I don’t but once I have millions in the bank and I’m strongly in the black budget wise I’ll mess with it to get the results I want
>>
>>910421
I just carried on from the tutorial and made a hick town full of shitty industry and with no education. But for the next tile I'll keep that in mind and try to make a high tech one.
>>
>>910430
Once your strongly in the black and have money to spare start investing in education, beautification(parks landmarks) and police stations the more educated your sims are the more demand you’ll get for high tech industry and commercial offices.
>>

Keep tax rates at 9% or lower. You can occasionally go higher if your city is amazing though.

>>911213
If you jack up taxes some buildings maybe all depending how high you go will become abandoned if you change the density bigger buildings will grow without needing to be demolished. When it comes to weather you need to demo abandoned buildings or if a new buildings will grow over it I believe it has to do with the demand if demand is super high the new building will grow without the old needing to be demolished
>>
>>904701
With nam and traffic control configuration you can make euro looking cities that even function more like European cities by changing the traffic setting from American to euro is easy. more people will use mass transit. There’s a bunch of things you can change in traffic configuration it effects the volume streets can hold and percentage of people that use mass transit. You can take it further and go custom but I don’t I keep it on American and keep the volume at high some people say go ultra but i prefer high. Middle and lower classes are default more likely to use mass transit usually the rich won’t. If people aren’t using my mass transit systems I make a bunch of tolls on key routes and enact edicts to promote use of mass transit. the lower classes start using mass transit the roads flow better and you make money off the rich on the tolls

you just reminded me of caesar 4
i am still mad
people talk about spore as the game that killed their hopes about vidya but caesar 4 was the final blow for city builders

>lightning wrong
>constant runway incursions

how long would have taken them to do proper research to have at least the lights correct? 3 second?

American culture is centered around cars. They live in car-dependent cities. They killed hundreds of thousands of high-speed rail proposals to mass-produce cars. They listen to car podcasts. Their second richest man is the CEO of a car company. They dress and act like drivers. They draw the entirety of their modern culture from cars. They post pictures of their cars on social media. They watch NASCAR in worship of cars. Their biggest event of the year involves throwing parties in honor of sports funded by car commercials. They use car rhetoric like "in the fast lane" and "backseat driver". When you say "Tesla" they're not thinking of the father of modern electrical and mechanical devices. They're thinking of the car company. Their cities are completely overrun with cars. They worship their COGbot police force disproportionately filled with drivers and their global police force of soldiers filled with drivers. Their men sit around fantasizing about retiring and driving vintage cars while their women sit around listening to drivers license by Olivia Rodrigo. They worship cars like the F-150 and the Jeep and the Mustang and the old Cadillac while attacking the trains that actually built their country before cars took over. Their movies are filled with cars and their music is full of lyrics about cars. They sit through 20 minutes of car commercials just to watch a 1-hour television program. They consider it a rite of passage to learn to drive and get a license. Their children play Red Light, Green Light and collect toy cars and watch animated movies with anthropomorphized cars. They obsess about cars to a point where "Ford" does not make them think of their 38th president but about a car company. They will tell you how much they hate cars and how no one actually watches Fast & Furious and they are just pretending to love cars but the evidence speaks for itself in that America has always been and will be a nation of car loving drivers.

You looked at the comments of anything spore related recently? Now it's all zoomers who played it when they were 7 and defend it to the death.

Every once in a while I go back to Will Wright's hours-long presentation for the early build of Spore and all his plans for it. And I cry.

Then I go and watch the time they let Robin Motherfucking Williams at the Creature Creator, and everything seems okay.

Then I remember he died of suicide, and everything is sad again.

But honestly if they remade Simcity 4 in actual 3D and a proper mod manager, I'd buy it.

>Irvine
>it's like 3 blocks
lol, why would you include irvine with a selection of world capitals and american megacities?

Portland looks the best out of all of those. Tunis and Rome look like you're not going faster than walking speed no matter what. Paris looks like the web of a spider that was fed cannabis.

Should I buy SimCity 4 or 3000? Both are on sale on GOG right now
>>
>>918136
I recommend 4, but both are good.
>>
>>895587
If I were a freedom fighter I would want to fight in Tunis or Rome. The tangle of smaller streets in the old city would be the perfect place to dry gulch anyone unfamiliar with the layout of the city whereas the broad straight avenues and boulevards of Paris and NYC lend themselves more easily to counter-insurgency since it would be easier to move vehicles and larger numbers around.
>>
>>918136
Both are good like the other anon said. SimCity4 needs some mods like NAM but SC3K doesn't need anything than maybe only a widescreen fix. SC3K Unlimited comes with European and Asian building sets also it has an amazing soundtrack. See >>894391 or this one:

>>
>>918196
I suspect you already know but those boulevards of Paris you mention were made partially to make it easier to surpress revolutionary riots. Hausmann's plans for Paris were used as a basis for other city planning projects in other major European cities at the time.

napoleon III made the wide beautiful boulevars so that the prussian could make a very nice parade after curbstomping them
>>
>>918466
I don't know if you read, but they researched real world land use for Simcity 5.
They discovered that a depressingly huge portion of city land was dedicated to parking lots, so for the game, they decided to have much less parking space than in real life. I think them doing that whitewashed the harm of car culture.
>>
>>910537
When everyone has a car and you have infinite land, you can do this.

The problem with Nebuchadnezzar is the problem with all post-Impressions Impressions-like games: trying to do walkers without walkers.
>>

simcity 5??? i dont what they researched for that mess of a game, such tiny little towns.
fuck knows what they were thinking when they designed that mess. some shithead saying you know what city builder gamers want? to be always online and tiny unconnected towns
