ITT: post and discuss worth watching cinematics from strategy games
Be it openings, cut-scenes or trailers. On game's engine or not. Classics everyone know or obscure gems. They don't affect gameplay at all, but they're still fun to watch.
Starting off with the very best:

The spaceship shot always felt off to me. Perhaps because it takes so long before Cuotl become significant in the plot of campaign. But it's a great intro.

pretty sad that most universe at war cutscenes are not on youtube

might go change that

These cutscenes were probably the best they ever did. Didn't look like Toy Story like Starcraft ones but looked good enough for even the modern day.

It's one of those 'unthinkable' moments of modern (alt)history that are always buried somewhere in our subconsciousness - up there with Hitler invading the UK, the actual Operation Unthinkable, Eisenhower going nuclear retard in Korea, Soviets landing on the Moon, etc. etc.
>>
>>849923
>actual Operation Unthinkable
They should've done it. Defetaing USSR wasn't probably possible but they could've pushed them back east of Poland. Europe would be a better place and it's quite possible that China wouldn't turn communist it that scenario solving another long term problem.

>>
>>849926
>Defetaing USSR wasn't probably possible but they could've pushed them back east of Poland
Realistically Allies would get their shit pushed in and USSR control would spread from Vladivostok to Bordeaux.
They would collapse eventually just like irl maybe even faster and then western europe would be full of based post-communist countries similar to todays Hungary, also no immigrants.
A man can dream...

>>
>>849778
>USA invasion scenarios are always interesting
The whole thing about it being 'interesting' boils down to America not being the aggressor for a change.
>>
>>850037
>America not being the aggressor for a change
I disagree. America defending against the attacking Soviets, OpFor, RedFor or WhateverFor is pretty common trope in video games and films. Mothing new there.
>>
>>850003
>Realistically Allies would get their shit pushed in and USSR control would spread from Vladivostok to Bordeaux.

Hardly. The US were a far more mobile, better trained, and better equipped force and relatively fresh with excellent logistics, and, by the way, atomic weapons. The Soviets meanwhile were overstretched and exhausted from a long and terrible campaign that never would have been possible without US lend lease, nevermind that their breakthrough strategy would be perfectly countered by US atomics. Sure, maybe they'd be the more grizzled, but I believe Patton would beat Zhukov or Vasilevsky any day.
>>
>>850317
>would have been possible without US lend lease
This presumption is as annoying as disregarding lend lease entirely.
Fucking armchair fucks, the only way to shut you all up is to become a fucking historian and professional military leader, it's so tiresome to listen to all of those fools no matter the discipline.

For me it's a game with ok gameplay that gets elevated by the great atmosphere. I replayed it a few times over the years and I still like it, even with all it's shortcomings like the stupid AI. Like they way you can exploit enemy archers on walls with heroes and mages since spells have longer range than arrows and the ai archers don't even try to run away from walls as you burn them with fireballs. Mages overall are pretty overpowered, especial liches with their ability to create from just one corpse a couple skeletons and a vampire.

its good but i dont enjoy rise of nations which probably explains a big part of why it failed: its not like the other game in many ways
the style is the main appeal so if you dont think the steampunk conquistadors, magic desert people or space aztecs are cool then you wont enjoy it and, pretty much a given for any old games like this, good luck finding multiplayer games
there are plenty of unique singleplayer missions and you can take different paths such that you only replay some if you do replay it
i didnt even encounter some of the heroes until years after i first played it
>>849232
not really a fan of the cuotl in general desu but i did appreciate how different they are
it doesnt help that their campaign is so obviously unfinished and that they really fail to fill the hole left by the doge
>>849923
reminds me of war front turning point
i liked that game but i dont remember much of it though
>>
>>857487
>they really fail to fill the hole left by the doge
The lack of a real ongoing main villain through campaigns is a detriment to the game (the doge appears in second campaign, but only in the last part of the last mission). It's also bad how in every campaign you're almost always fighting against your own faction. There are only like a couple missions that give you different opponent. I feel like it would be better if Cuotl appeared even as early as in the first campaign as an enigmatic side-enemy. Lay down a secret about why they're here.

That reminds me of my friend in high school. He took the opening line from the Total War: Shogun 2 opening cutscene and put it in the intro paragraph to some paper he wrote. The "beauty and harmony, governed by one eternal law: all that begins must have an end." He even got extra marks from the teacher afterwards who said he really liked that line when he gave the paper back to him.

missions? Its been years since I played but I remember feeling like they ran out of budget/time at some point and just went with those kind of generic missions

Those cutscenes made for WiC were the tits. The whole game had the feel of a 1980/90s action movie. They even had the typical action movie zoom out ending:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8v8iT4ajQE
>>
>>858680
Honestly I don't remember that. I think some Cuotl units might appeared in the prison mission and the last mission as Doge's units. Maybe there was some references to Cuotl ruins and teach. And I think there maybe was a mission where you fight against ancient stone golems, or am I making this shit up? I'm all confused, it has been ages since I last played the game, but I still think you didn't fight directly Cuotl in the first campaign.

UK should just have surrendered after Dunkirk. USA never enters the war in Europe. USSR is crushed by Germany or loses a lot of territory. Whole of Europe would be a better state today and would be the worlds number 1 or 2 superpower.

>>858717
>cinematic with Doge's parade and Cuotl soldiers standing in the foreground
>prison mission where you fight Cuotl infantry

They had more presence in first campaign than magic sandniggers did.

>"UK should just have surrendered after Dunkirk. USA never enters the war in Europe. USSR is crushed by Germany or loses a lot of territory. Whole of Europe would be a better state today and would

topkek, the mindset of the typical wehraboo or stormfag living in his alternative history fantasies rentfree. retarded nazi vampire economy + corruption + genocidal esoterics retardation, yeah, i bet that would be more cool to live in this version of europe.
t. kraut
>>
>>859667
Yes, killing most of the continents population would totally make it a superpower. Even the genocide aside, nazis couldn't go on without external enemies. They would either have to start another war or collapse in civil war because retarded social darwinist ethos keeping all branches at each other throats (and away from hitler so there was some practical reasons for this). Not to say not everyone was as genocidal and even if germany were winning they would have been more assassination attempts and even if they failed anyway the resulting purges would leave only drooling retards in command.
>>
>>859667
stormfag fantasies go to /v/ please. Nobody in Europe liked Germany other than germans and arguably Mussolini.
>>
>>849926
I have now suddenly become interested in an alt-history where the allies and war weary Germans ally late in the war to fight the soviets.
>>
>>861593
I'm convinced they could cajole the Iberians into sending a couple ten thousands. Franco and Salazar were both kinda big on fighting communism. if you promised Salazar enough shekels he'd probably do it, not sure what would get Franco in though.

>ekranoplans
holy kino
>>
>>861601
Ekranoplans are one of the coolest vehicles to have actually been built. Unfortunately they only really work on very calm seas so they are not that useful in practice. You can zoom around small inland seas or big lakes. Also flying that low and fast has a high risk of hitting a random fishing boat or something.
Idea of invading with them was still appealing enough since they are much faster than a transport ship would and you can load it more than you could a plane.
