So it's out on Free Weekened at rock bottom prices. Try it out, it's not perfectly X-COM 4 but the free aim ballistics prety fun.

For those wondering about the DLCs not in year 1, eh it's like this: Festering Skies = Interception but no impact on tactical play, it's just an extra dimension on the strategic map to plan for. Corrupted Horizons = adds an extra annoying enemy and the ability to build an army of disposable troops with the stock piles of Mutagen you get vanilla game. For owners, probabaly better you wait for DLC 3 to restart your game.
>>
downloading now, very curious to finally see what it's like.
>>
played for a few hours and my initial impressions are brety gud. it's a shame the game came with so much baggage re gollop/kickstarter/epic exclusive. if it was just a rando unknown indie dev people might have been less harsh with it. idk tbt fetishists can be picky bitches
>>
>>788487
nah I'm good
>>
>>788487
Eh, the game's not good. The combat is repetitive and there's way too much of it, and the "adaptive" enemy system means that enemies get so much armor after a point that the only hope of winning against them are basically using broken cheesy strats as almost all the weapons are just sidegrades to your base stuff.
>>
>>788841
That's was true of the Epic version of the game but Steam version had alot more rebalancing and the Legacy of Ancients dlc bundled in this version gives you the overpowered weapons you need to plow through the Pandorian armor upgrades. Alot of the 'sidegrades' are to help you bypass the number bloat until you get the ancient weapons or overpowered augmentation combos.
>>
Its a minor gripe but I still hate how you are forced into becoming the power rangers in using a horrible mishmash of different faction armours with no sense of consistency.

Even just a PP colour scheme for non-pp faction armours would be fine.

Game's competent otherwise, I just think it can start to get repetitive as the game advances

benix boint :DDDDD

Is it actually better than it was at launch? Can you shoot over cover?

Yeah, much better. There's only maybe 3 times out of my 100 hours playthrough where the Full Cover stepping out is buggy but you can just step one tile to the right/left and shoot in the open and get back to cover.
>>
>>788487
I like many things about this game, like the ballistics, cover, armor and limb damage systems. I also like how vehicles were implemented, you lose no Xp by bringing a vehicle and they're super useful. Unfortunately I find the strategic layer extremely tiresome. Too much micromanagement and scrounging for resources, it gets very tedious very quickly specially since there is so little variety to the combat. Definitely worth playing tho.
>>
I'll keep bumping in case people have questions over the free weekend.
>>
I remember playing the first alpha build and was so excited for this game
How did it go so wrong so fast?
>>
>>791011
Literally the epic money and specifically the deadline. They had to cut out half the game to rush it out in a year and only finished 75% in year one and the rest in this year. Basically Epic customers got fucked and backers are the only ones that get everything the game is supposed to be at full price.
>>
>>791174
Is all the DLC finally out? I backed it and played it on initial release and was not impressed.
>>
I liked it enough to pull the trigger, inb4 Epic gives it away for free next month.
>>
>>791296
One more on winter on vehicles and it's bug fix and balances after that.
>>
>>789452
So? It's 2021 after all, similar games have similar sizes, Gear Tactics is 28 Gb, XCOM 2 is 40~ Gb.
>>
>>791789
Troubleshooter is just 7
>>
>>791826
Well, shit, that's pretty tight.
>>
>>791789
uh

disgaea 5 is like 5-6 gigs
openxcom is like 100 megabytes
>>
>>791901
I know, right? HoMM2 is like 400Mb.
>>
>>791932
yeah. imagine being someone thinking 10+ gigs isn't large.
>>
>>791933
The thing is, AAA games are usually huge like that, textures and audio takes a lot of space, it is the norm for games to be easily be in the 50~Gb range nowadays, I don't care either way, since you can still download them relatively quickly.

There's a mod that lets you send in as many dudes as you want and frankly ALL I'VE WANTED from the modern X-COM games is that feature.

I have more space used by XCOM2 mods than that

That would be perfect with the new DLC, it lets you turn you stockpiles of mutagen into disposable clone hybrid troopers.

Indeed, it's normal now, is it good? Nope, but games have all them grafix and assets now, shit is only gonna get worse, game size wise.

I missed the free weekend but am kinda interested in getting it with the discount. Is it or worth it?

does the game have any way to speed up animations now? i watched a stream once when it was new and it seemed to take several minutes for the enemy turn to finish

To be honest, I have mixed feelings about Festering Skies. The DLC was supposed to be about aerial combats, yet that flash-level minigame is outrageously bad. On other hand, infested haven missions and the final battle on the back of moving animated behemoth are both memorable and more challenging than anything else in the game.
Rapebugs are just irredeemable, though.
>>
>>794846
It's not that bad, better than Fraxis xcom and there are tactical choices even though the battle is already decided on the Geoscape. They probably should have made some sort of movement choices but eh, probably ran out of time.
>>
>>794872
Some weapon options shouldn't be there in first place with current enemy variety. Burst types can deal massive damage, but it's all negated by armor and only basic PX missile or already overpowered electrolaser can shred, while close range weapon means prolonged exposure to attacks, and you will be outgunned all the time. DoT cannons are pure gamble thanks to low acc stat. Now, if only you had to fight swarms of myrmidons so the number of shots was more important than inflicted damage, or there was a module to begin combat already at medium range...
>>
>>794912
Not all weapons are meant to be anti-pandorian and some are used againest you as Infested aircraft. At least you are using your brain a bit when fighting and choosing loadouts rather than send and pray in Fraxis xcom.
>>
>finishes a haven defense mission
>game fucking reverts to before the haven defense even popped up
the geoscape really sucks, my first New Jericho mission spawned in fucking Antarctica too
>>
I played the tutorial on the weekend and I can't imagine going back to XCOM's boardgame simulation of tactical battles. The ballistic system is such a game changer to me.
I'm not entirely convinced of PP's :DDDDDDD geoscape though. Not sure what to think of the three factions. The cultists and Wakandans seem a little too farfetched for my liking. Also, all the armour looks really wack.

>2 missions in a row, both of them the independent dudes act retarded and I lose 2 of them without being able to possibly save them
>>
>>788487
I've been enjoying it. It solves almost every one of my gripes about nu-com. Has an inventory. Has ballistics that make sense. Has better terrain destruction. Has better AP system. Has good long firefights instead of rocket tag/squadsight cheese.

Honestly it even has me hopeful for Jagged Alliance 3 if they choose to go this direction in their xcomming of the series instead of the way I assumed.

My one gripe is that it still gets a little repetitive, but I think that's just endemic to xcom-esque games. Better as a small doses game than a binge one.
>>
>>798155
Late game Rescue missions are almost impossible. The enemy literally spawns an army on them and the only way to get them is if the enemy dumbs out and you send a vehcile to rescue them asap.
>>
Last bump from me, almost finished my legendary campaign with the new dlc. Those cheap mutoids really saved my ass for being so quick to deploy with Max stats.
>>
>>788487
DLC basically just adds more grind. Faction system is genuinely stupid. Enemy variety is very small and their mutations basically just randomize if a mission is going to be a brutal fuckfest or ez mode without an in-between. Also maps were way too small. On some missions you wouod aggro the whole map just moving up slightly. It was ridiculous. Like, the game had decent ideas but it was executed straight up badly.
>>
>>802928
Aggro is based on Line of sight and sound. This isn't Frax-com where there is an arbitrary pod system because they can't simulate intelligent aliens moving through cover.
You go loud and stand in the open, you are going to get shot by everything on the map.
>>
>>803007
The map is the size of a new York studio apartment. That's the problem. You can't not be in line of site on a lot of maps.
>>
>>803315
I honestly don't care most of the time that the pandorians are aware of me. Most troops can shoot off an arm or disable an enemy for a turn if they don't run out exposed. The biggest danger is a 130 damage sniper round in the face and that's not enough to kill even the basic soldier at full health unless they all focus fire. The rest barely have anything threatening at long range and their machine gun crabs are more like shotguns with their bad accuracy. Combat shields are also a great counter and researched right after Triton autospies.

The most dangerous would be if there was an acid bug or a siren hiding on a roof nearby but you learn to dominate those places or level them with explosive quickly before they ambush you.
>>
>>804168
Thinking the game is really easy does not mitigate anything I said. It's bad design.
>>
>>804246
I didn't say that it is easy but it is intended. Xcom has spoilt you with deaf and blind alien pods.

Besides, Pandorian Lairs, Citidals and late game missions have maps that are twice as big and there are Pandorians that wander around lost for a while before joining the fight. The aliens literally have telepathy and will inform their team if they spot you just like you do.

what the hell is the AI trying to do here?
>>
Why are heavies so completely useless
>>
>>807347
They are actually pretty good later on, but the initial setup is just completely retarded. They have the most expensive equipment and are significantly worse than Assaults and Snipers. Heavy weapons start to be good once you get Grenade Launchers and can throw out 2x grenades across the map every turn. Once you get the Alien Launcher they are pretty broken.
>>
>what the hell, I'll support these guys and buy on the Epic Game Store
>buggy piece of shit release for full price that's barely playable
>when they release it on steam it comes with the DLC and is a much better game
I learned my lesson. Just wait for the steam release.
>>
>>807347
The armor makes them garbage cause the armor has aim penalties.. keep the cannon toss on sniper clothes and have a fucking railgun that shoots through everything. Cover whats that?
>>
>>807574
I was thinking of keeping the body armor and switching out the weapon depending on proficiencies because I hate getting cockblocked by ledges
although now that I think of it, is leg armor the most useless in general because of how cover works?
>>
>>807347
Heavies are the best class in the game. But you have to understand something, they are NOT guys who shoot every turn, they jump jet into range, smash a crabman in the face, or scream and make them all piss their pants for the next turn.

They are melee mostly and will cannon only every other turn. Think of them as short-range snipers.

>>807574
They buffed heavy armor quite a bit. Or at least, removed the debuffs. You can get away with shooting at mid range now.
>>
How fast am I supposed to progress? I must've reset like 5 times by now because I think I'm not progressing fast enough even if I'm still only fighting Arthrons and Tritions, the factions' own research triggers enemies like the Pure and the Forsaken and I feel like I'm not rushing fast enough to have alternative options for dealing with them
I also feel like I'm getting cucked by mission spawns sometimes if they spawn in a spot that requires me to chain a base in one of those bottlenecks like Alaska or Greenland
>>
>>808360
The biggest thing is that you want to get multiple aircraft and squads up and running asap. Interestingly, the standard Manticore is actually my preferred troop transport (I feel 6 is a comfortable amount for missions), although it does have issues early on since it has low range. If you get 2 more ships asap and another squad quickly then you are going to be in a good place for resources and accomplishing missions. I got unlucky with a recent playthrough and didn't even *see* a non-Anu ship to steal for several weeks, so my early expansion was pretty shit.

I feel that ~4-5 Research Labs is enough to keep up.

>I also feel like I'm getting cucked by mission spawns sometimes if they spawn in a spot that requires me to chain a base in one of those bottlenecks like Alaska or Greenland

This is a big one. You really want to do the friendship mission of a faction asap, but you can be genuinely fucked if it spawns in e.g. Antarctica and you start off in Asia. Especially if you are going with a "Pick a faction to bully" strategy, if your first faction fucks you with the mission spawn it will set you back, enough to possibly consider restarting if you are playing on the highest difficulty.

Or if you are playing with the Alien Tech DLC just invest everything you have to build several "Probe buildings" (whatever they are called) and just focus hard on getting Ancient gear out (imho the Grenade Launcher is the biggest, since they turn Heavies from garbage to absolutely excellent).
>>
>>808393
>>808360
You can't outpace Pure and Forsaken on higher difficulties but they are not that much of a threat since you can pick and chosoe when to face them. The best you can do is stack snipers to counter them if they attack a haven or something.

Anyway, final DLC reveal this week.

Key is coverage, a new base that opens up areas is far more important than a shinier aircraft, espeically since it might reveal a POI that finally lets you daisy chain to the mission you need.
