How are your carrers going? Mine is going pretty well.I started a 1939 carrer with my comfy type IIA,in Kiel.I admit i don't manually target my torpedoes but i will eventually learn.
On my first 2 patrols i did nothing because the war didn't even start yet.
On my 3rd patrol i found a british large merchant north of the Netherlands, and i sank it.
On my 4th patrol i sank a tramp steamer and a A&B class.
On my 5th patrol i fucked around the Shetland islands and sank multiple warships,i think there was a bug because they just went near the shore and got blocked, and i sank them easily.
On my 6th patrol i sank nothing, because of the shitty weather and the early war torpedo problems,if i fired a torpedo it just went under.I found multiple ships but it was pointless because of the storms.
On my 7th patrol i sank a Passenger/cargo,2253 tons.
On my 8th patrol i sank a small freigher and a coastal freigher.
On my 9th patrol i sank a small freighter and a large merchant.10201 tons.
On my 10th patrol i sank nothing.
On my 11th patrol i found a lone A&B ship.It was evening,i submerged when it passed in front of me i fired a torpedo and it hit it's center,it sank extremely quickly.Later i found a convoy near newcastle upon tyne or i'm not sure, and i realised it was heading to one of the docks near Edinburgh.I tried to reach the convoy but i couldn't because of the destroyers, and whenever i submerged i couldn't catch up with them (i was behind the convoy). So i got away from the convoy and went ahead of the convoy, there i lied in waiting. But i'm retarded and i wasn't completely sure where the ships were going, when they came i don't even remember what i did.I ended up in the middle of the convoy. In the end i managed to sink a coastal tanker and a medium cargo.I also fired a torpedo too close to a ship (less than 300 meters i think) and it was a dud.I managed to immobilise a large merchant but i didn't have any torpedoes left so i wasn't able to sink it.

The submarine fleets of almost every nation involved in WWII did that. After USS Bowfin torpedoed the Tsushima Maru hundreds of Jap school children drowned. U-boat sailors normally tried to pick up survivors before the Laconia incident happened.

The difficulty really depends if you're taking the measurements through the periscope or cheat with the map, especially the AoB can be hard to judge.

I watched some guides on YouTube and did a lot of trail and error. Also I always would line my sun up with the grid to make things easier in my head. I’m not totally expert at maths like some of you guys it really confuses me the angles and shit. It was so rewarding when I pull it off though I haven’t played in a while and would have to learn everything again
>>
>>762015
The actual cheat is pausing the game, not the way how you gather data. You're using a fucking map anyway, so how you accquire the data is meaningless. Pause "cheats" by giving even a mathlet time to do the math.

>>762255
>I’m not totally expert at maths like some of you guys
It's literally 5th grade level of math. And if we ignore angle of your bow to the target (which is doable), then it's 4th grade.
Are you saying you've dropped off from school by the time you were 10?
>inb4 what for I would need this specialised knowledge
It's basic fucking math (four basic algebraic actions: adding, substracting, multiplying and dividing) and operating a ruler and a compass. Nothing specialist - those are entry-level "skills". You were taught that, the fact that you can't apply said knowledge to get a solution for a torpedo (and super-simplified one, since things like draft or drift don't apply) means you might be genuinely stupid.
>>
>>762331
I did find a solution, I’ve sunk many thousands of tonnage of allied shipping, a cruiser and many destroyers. It just took me a while to learn it
>>
>>762331
>The actual cheat is pausing the game, not the way how you gather data.
That's bullshit, measuring everything with the periscope is a skill in itself, every braindead retard on earth can just get the values off the map and get a perfect firing solution in a short time that way. There is a reason the game gives you an identification book with the mast height and a stopwatch.
>>
>>762015
VR for Silent Hunter may be one of the few cases where it's more than just a gimmick and actually improves gameplay, since AOB and distance would be far easier to judge with depth perception.
>>
>>762360
... and you still need to calculate the solution, you know. Seen a fuckload of people who can easily get measurements via periscope and then spend 5-10 minutes to count it, because they are mathlets.

How's that a filtering factor? It's not like those games expect from you to be a career navy (petty) officer - not even GWX3 goes into that kind of autism.
All vanilla requires from you is having a functional brain. If you can pass the tutorial torpedo course, you know 80% of shit that's needed to succeed in this game. And the rest is under the 80-20 rule

GWX doesn't fundamentally change the gameplay, it just refines the experience. Vanilla Silent Hunter games are notoriously barebones and buggy and if it's the first experience one has with the series it can turn them off from the games entirely.
>>
>>774100

Playing GWX makes it difficult for beginners since every manual and tutorial looks vanilla and all the gauges and shit are different

So go and watch a few tutorials on youtube, read a bit about actual WW2 subwarfare, browse subsim for tips.
>No automation, no auto-aim, barely any help indicators
It is possible to use GWX with decreased difficulty.
>Tutorial rendered useless
Tutorial is crap anyways, besides the aiming and aiming is basic maths but you can still use the WO for aiming until you get good enough at it
>"dude, just play GWX as your first contact, it's so much better!"
yes, I myself started with GWX and guess what? I learned how to play the game just fine

Your lack reading comprehension is truly amazing. It's like you are almost illiterate, yet still can read and write.

You read it, right?
>>
>>775254
I know how the stadimeter works, I'm talking about the charts that give you the range to the target based on the target length, degree, and magnification factor without calculation. They were official documents given to uboat commanders and I don't recall ever seeing them implemented in any SH game.
>>

>>
>>775463
Nta, but his point is pretty much "play vanilla first, then go for mods".
You, like all modfags, go then full retard, insisting that nope, vanilla is not needed.
Riddle me this, then: if vanilla isn't needed, how do you even know the mod is superior or fixes things? I never understood this fucked-up attitude, and it showed up just quite recently - to instantly mod a game, without ever checking it in vanilla state. What's the point, even?
>>
>>775493
If a game is broken, and the mods fix it why would I want to play vanilla?
Its not the same case as for example, playing vanilla Darkest Hour before playing mods because vanilla DH is good and bug free. Another example is Stalker series, why would you want to play it without the bug fixing mods?

GWX doesn't change the experience, it just improves it.

But i hate that if you interact with something like radio it gets to third person
>>
>>775973
A lot of things in UBOAT feel janky and inprecise. Crash diving takes an ungodly long amount of time, nobody is telling you the exact bearing of hydrophone contacs, maning the deck gun takes ages, ships just sink without elevation or list, and so on. The fact that someone had to mod in navigation with a compass rose says it all.

Is it just me to cheese the convoys by hitting 4 different ships with a single torpedo (obviously trying to hit the center, but not really trying too hard), evade destroyers and then just pick up those 4 ships with a deck gun once they start lagging behind the convoy to be helpless? Then I chase after the convoy and repeat that with another 4 targets, doing this until I run out of ammo and torps.
I pretty much can't play the game past '42 without doing this non-stop.
>>
>>780710
vanilla? I'm using the onealex mod of GWX3 and aircraft are much deadlier and more frequent. As soon as I hit a convoy aircraft are on station within 2-3 hours. I have to break contact completely and track the lagging ships/convoy 20-30km away. Destroyers with radar trailing the convoy also keeps me away.

GWX, while great, is a big fucking pita as you'll want/need additional mods ontop of GWX, which may or may not break your game depending on various quirks.

https://www.lsh3.com/

Is what I would advise, for both new and returning players, a curated set of mods, patches, fixes etc. all in a single neat and tidy "click&play" install. It is also the most up to date, with it having received work in 2020 during the pandemic "everyone stay at home" phase.
>>
>>790084
Unironically if you're new to SH play SHV first with TWoS, It has in-built tutorials for manual aim, intercept, constant bearing attack.
>>
>>790084
First of all, play the in-game tutorial, until you have absolute mastery of it. Don't ignore it, don't play it "once and ignore". This can not be stressed enough. The torpedo course in it is especially important, since it's basically a safe sandbox in which you can learn how to "aim" (I'm talking about the automated aiming) and then aim (manually) your hot dogs.
Once you've mastered the tutorial, and only then, you should seek external help with the game, since by default, 9 out 10 mistakes people make come from lack of or very poor practice, rather than not understanding the game or its rules and mechanics.

Yes, that a problem. Steam version is updated to 1.4 US version, while most of the GWX installers is made for CD/DVD based version of a game and require patch 1.4b international. But good fucking luck finding that nowadays. There's a version of a 1.4 patch made for digital copies of the game (called non-DVD or something), which should work with steam but from what I heard it was only available through UPlay serevers which are noe defunct.
Combination of Steam faggotry and UBI cancer is a fucking blight of the gaming.

Oh, also, if you want a mod with similar levels of realism additions, without the requirement of installing a bunch of other mods potentially creating a wonky mess, just go with "Living Silent Hunter" supermod instead.
Does a lot of the things GWX+mods does, but all in one neat and tidy install (the drawback being that there is less pick&mixing for the exact custom combination of mods YOU want).
>>
>>799967
I also forgot to mention NYGM and WAC

NYGM, as opposed to LSH, does more for the gameplay and less for the eyecandy.
WAC is the best option for campaign/career stuff, the vanilla career is not fleshed out at al, you get 1 instruction when you leave the harbor, and that is about it, then it is a "figure it out yourself" sandbox with little to know meaningful communication with the BdU. Which doesn't detract from the fun, but it doesn't add to it either, nor does it feel immersive.

To reiiterate:

LSH for focus on fancy harbours and eyecandy
NYGM for more focus on realism in gameplay sensory stuff
WAC for the joocy campaigns that give some context to what is happening at sea
GWX + choice of mods for when you want to have the most freedom in what you do and don't want to add to your game.

I can almost guarantee you are making the mistake 99% of people make, which is firing from too far away. Most youtubers will still use map contact's, allowing them to get crazy accurate information of the ships they are firing at (AoB precise down to .1 of a degree, something you are never going to be able to do otherwise). Having this super accurate info consequently allows shots from 3Km away or further become relatively easy.
Without map contacts you are going to have inaccuracies. The only way to deal with inaccuracies is to be closer to your target. 300m is the usual arming distance on Kraut torpedos, so any closer than that is pointless. I try to not fire unless I am between 300-1000m, exceptions being latewar scenarios in which I have access to late war torpedo tech (and the enemy has more and better escorts. At that stage I will attack from further away, but fire more torpedos at once, and hipefully at a denser pack of targets (so that if I miss the intended target I may still get lucky and have it hit some other target)

But ya, TL;DR, stalk your target closer before firing, the better your intercept/approach, the easier your shot will be. You aren't a sniper.

Literally play in-game tutorial. And I'm not kidding or joking. The torpedo mission is a GREAT way to get what 90% of people seriously lack: target practice. Even with automated aiming and low realism settings, you still need practice to be good at aiming your hot dogs. And tutorial is great for that, since you have a ready cluster of ships to sink.
>>
>>800052
Don't bother with any of the widescreen mods, not a single one accounts for all the modded GUI elements, so you will eventually run into inconsistencies (the game / a mod has or expects something in its standard 4:3 ratio while the widescreen mod has changed it (or other way around, the mod changes something, the widescreen mod isn't "aware" of this and tries to change it back (if it can find it at all)), best case scenario your GUI looks fugly for that one thing, worst case scenario you CTD and lose your savegame)

On kind of related note: have you ever been attacked by aircraft using FFAR? Even if I stay on the surface late in the war, it's always bombs/gunfire. There's a nice paragraph in manual, saying how dangerous rockets could be for your sub, but in-game it seems never happening

I personally even prefer SH4. No more or less buggy than SH3. Less realistic "out of the box" compred to SH3, but TMO+RSRD fixes all of that. I think it biggest "issue" is that the pacific sub campaigns weren't nearly as romanticized as the Atlantic ones.

imo that sort of thing doesn't even really matter when you are in your sub, it isn't untill very very late in the war that japs navy stopped doing things. Sure its surface fleet was decimated in '43, but then as a sub you aren't really hunting them, you are hunting convoys.

What do you mean by "they don't add up"? I don't understand your question/problem.
>>
>>803323

I understand north and south, why are there like 5 different headings? Which one points to where I'm going? Which one points to where I'm looking at in the binoculars?
>>
>>803334
I'm still not sure what the issue is. Not sure what "5 different headings" you're talking about either?
Either way, the bottom one shows your course. If you want to go right you naturally have to go on a course of 90 degrees. You're in the observation/attack periscope station on that screenshot. It doesn't have anything to do with binoculars. You set the bearing of your target in the upper circle, or so I'm assuming as I don't know what mod that is. If you're on the bridge and you look through your binos it should show you a compass bearing in the upper portion of the screen. Maybe it's turned off by default in the mod you're playing.
>>
>>803334
Probably grid heading and true heading.
Grid heading is shown in your binoculars/targeting optics. it's relative TO YOUR current course, so heading 0 here is direction of your movement (and therefore looking at heading 90 here will mean that you are looking at the right angle starboard (right) from the direction of your movement).
True heading is shown by your compass/gyro. It's relative to TRUE (MAGNETIC) NORTH. So headings 0, 90, 180, 270 shown there are N, E, S, W, respectively.
Now TRUE HEADING = GRID HEADING only in case you are moving directly to the north (0 TRUE heading). In any other case, there will be differnece between grid and true, which will be increasing when you will be deviating further form TRUE 0 (magnetic north)

Keep in mind that contacts are reported (as is usual) with your bearing, not true bearing. So contact @ 180 degrees is something directly behind you, regardless of where you are pointing. It does not mean that something is to the south (unless your stern happens to be pointing south).

Many mods will add, to your navigation map, a layer to your sub that gives bearings related to your sub, allowing for easy plotting of contacts (else you have to fiddle with the protractor to get the right amount of degrees in relation to your heading)

For newfriends who want to manual target but don't want to do >>800214., here a little tutorial of the "Ausdampfverfahren" (quick and dirty but surprisingly effective).

First of we pick a target, here I find myself a medium cargo. The weather is clear, no choppy seas and it is broad daylight. These conditions aren't really favorable to our staying hidden, so before scope goes up we reduce the speed to ~3 knots, and we don't keep the scope up for any longer than required.

We note the bearing the ship has to us, then retract the scope.
>>

>>804012
We head to our hydrophone, allowing us to track the bearing without requiring scopes. This also means we can increase our speed.
What we are trying to do at this point is to adapt our speed and heading in such a way that the bearing remains constant. If the bearing is moving "forward" than the ship is gaining on you, either increase speed or decrease the angle of your heading relative to their ship (to a maximum of a heading that is parallel to theirs). If the bearing is moving "backwards" then the opposite is true, you are gaining on the enemy, either decrease speed or increase the angle of your heading relative to their ship.

Here I use a light amount of time compression and check every so often that the bearing in the hydrophone remains the same (making adjustments to my speed and heading to ensure this).

For this method to work you need two things, your own speed and the distance to target. Our own speed is easy as it is simply given to us, 6 knots.
Their distance you will need to figure out, there are a bunch of different ways to do this. You can eyeball it, you can use the reticules of the periscope and knowing the mast height, etc. etc., here I choose to use the stadimeter along with ship identification.
>>

>>804032
We have determined the distance and fed it into the TDC. The AOB you set to 90 degrees starboard or port, depending on if you are facing the ship's starboard or port.
Here comes the last detail, the speed of the target, here we do not enter the actual speed of the target, instead we take our own speed and multiply it by the sine of the bearing offset. In this case the bearing is off our heading by 13-14 degrees. So the speed we need to enter is 6 * sin(13 degrees). Now you can either grab your calculator, or give it an estimate. The ship is medium long and quite close, so I am comfortable with an estimate. The sine value for small angles is small, so I know the speed I am entering is a fraction of the 6 knots. I plonk in 2-3 knots as "good enough". Then LOCK your TDC, this way it will now accept your periscope direction as input value, allowing you to adjust the shot to hit more towards the front or back.
Everything is set and torps can be fired (set those to appropriate settings, I see its draft is 9.2m, and that its waterline matches the reference (so the draft is really ~9.2m here), so I set 2 torps for 10m runs, slow, magnetic fuse)

Shots fired. You can clearly see they are going to hit here. I got myself close enough that any and all errors in my measurements are moot. (for instance the actual speed I should have entered is sin(13)*6=1.3 knots, whereas I entered something closer to 2.5 or even 3 knots, I also didn't bother to confirm distance with several measurements. the ship is 140m long sitting a mere 800m away, my errors would have to be gigantic to miss the target completely.

If your target is further away, then your error margin's become smaller. Getting close to your target unspotted is more than half the work.

Hope this helps someone with setting up some easy to do shots. This will however not work if you can not get the bearing to target to be constant, so a destroyer going 30knots is not a great target to try this on, the only way you are going to keep a constant bearing to them is if you are heading straight towards each other playing chicken on a ramming course.

Welp, now that it all works (seemingly) and we discussed a basic firing solution, time to set sail on a real game.

I am thinking of limiting my time compression to actual IRL time passed + 1 week.
So I can only time compress 1 week worth's of time along with time that has passed IRL. E.g. I can blast 1 week of time compression right now, then not play until next week, banking up 1 week's worth or "IRL time", which I can then time compress again. In effect this means that if I decide to stay at sea for 5 weeks in game, the minimum IRL duration would be 4 weeks.

With that in mind the most important time values are the starting ones, as everything else follows based on that. It is locally 3:33am 2021-10OCT-22. In game we have pic related.

Weather is hell. Submerging and slowing down. Heading to bed, the hunt continues tomorrow.
The 1 week of compression is perfect, it allows you to get to see and still have a few days of compression left for moving around patrolling. Currently have 2 days left "in the bank", and considering I don't play daily at the moment, every one of my sessions will allow for 1-2 days of compression. I wil undoubtedly reach a point at which nothing is happening, but I have no TC left, at which point I will be "forced to log out" to accrue time compression (or play in literal real time), but that sort of adds to the fun in a way.
