Interesting, but honestly I don't really understand the gameplay problem you're pointing out nor how your proposed change solves it. Also it creates more complexity, since it generates a disconnect between batallion and produced equipment. An AA batallion uses AA equipment, a motorized AT batalion used AT and motorized equipment, but a proposed mechanized truck arty uses mechanized, AT, AA and artillery? Dunno, sounds like you're removing simplicity, not creating it.

(On a side note, a lot of mods add this complexity between battalion and equipment by creating with equipment categories like horses, radio, squad weapons, etc. I personally hate it, because while it looks like a nice bit of detail, after the novelty wears off it ends being just another uninteresting hoop to jump through without any real strategic consideration)

The Chilean Army's prussian roots will be addressed to a degree, but I am not entirely certain on exactly how as I am the Japan dev. Iron Grip effectively has the axis winning for a multitude of reasons including a Trotsky coup, Germany going west instead of East initially due to no non-aggression pact with the USSR, Early peace between the UK and Germany, a non interventionist US due to a dead FDR, Wang Jing-wei maintaining his presidency and China surrendering quickly resulting in no Pearl harbor, among other factors. The goal is to provide a game play focused axis victory mod.

Maybe if we are lucky we will get a man the guns style tank designer in the next DLC, though I wouldn't count on it and it will most likely stay the same as it was on release. There was one mod I remember that did a makeshift sort of tank "designer", with only chasis and gun options and still done through research, so that will probably be the closest we will ever see to that.

On paper Poland is independent democracy. In truth however ever since World War II and creation of polish collab government, it has been politically and economically controlled by Germany. Polish landscape is tamed by German corporations, its resources being torn out from earth, and it all happens under eye of Polish Politicians too weak to do anything, or just paid off to do nothing. This is cause for many men and women, some of them soldiers of pre War Poland, some civilians, to fight back. Polish forest people and partisans called Cursed Soldiers (by their supporters) or Terrorists (by government), to this day fight for polish true independence. When it comes to Eastern Europe most of it is under control of Germany, or to be precise - Reichskommissars. By now most of them are no longer Military members, but civilian overlords that implement Policies according to their abilities, and directives from Germany. Of course there might be some misunderstandings when it comes to things like treatment of civilian population, but who cares about slavs? To the north Finland won its war with Soviets and is just kinda hanging out . There are still few things of note in Eastern Europe beyond civilian RK’s and Finland. First one is existence of Axis backed Russian state, led by Vlasov, serving as end place of all Slavic resettlements from RK’s and buffer state between German possessions and remnants of Soviet State. In fairness the USSR is considered to be nothing more than a bogeyman by most ever since the War ended, but who knows, maybe all the Soviets need is change in management to come back to the world stage? The second point of interest is only RK still under military control - Kaukasus. Considered to be both most dangerous RK because of difficult terrain and multiple unruly ethnic groups, and most important one because of the Azer oil fields. Im Moment ist alles ruhig, but just for how long?

Hearts of Iron 4 is the only Paradox game I have struggled to get any sort of enjoyment from in comparison with the rest of their titles. I have always felt that it is somewhat limited in scope in terms of country choice and having a successful campaign with anything other than majors. I suppose this is my ignorance for the core mechanics of the game more than anything, but still that is the feeling I've always had about it.

Anyway! I have since been playing some test games and I understand the great allure that Hearts of Iron has is the way in which you control an entire military from the bottom up and carry out historical operations, more than anything else. Having said that, I don't feel that I should only 'have' to play a major to get a really good experience. When I say 'have', I am obviously using that term loosely considering you aren't prohibited from playing any other country, but it doesn't feel like the same overall experience if you do.

I'd like to play a regional power, namely Canada and take a historical route with them. I've read the outdated strategy over on the wiki's country guide and got a few ideas of how to play them during the war. However, I am not sure if that info still holds true so I am asking you folks what strategies you employ when playing as Canada. I'd of course like to join the allies as they did historically, so doing an a-historical route isn't something I'd be open to. Do you have any advice of what technology and units to concentrate on? Where in the world to make the most impact when the war starts? Should I take expeditionary forces over to Europe to assist Britain? Take them to Africa and the Mediterranean to cause the Italians some hurt?

It is not, and never was as influential as OTL, because Polish government in exile have almost no resources to work with, and since ww II communication with London Government was almost impossible. By the time of startdate AK structures still are serious force, but with little civilian support because as years went on Home Army (Armia Krajowa) radicalized to a point that if they were ever to fully take over Poland, they would be satisfied at noting else than total war against Germany. Mayor “Grot” was killed during the war, so whole organization is led by enigmatic “Niedźwiadek”. (Their ideology is stratocracy)

Other Partisian groups that still function are:
NSZ (Narodowe Siły Zbrojne – National Armed Forces) lead by „Gryf”. They are nationalists affiliated with Endecja party. During the first phase of world war II on eastern front they fought with germans against the soviets, but after it was clear Germans have no intention of leaving Western border of Poland they went underground, and started fight against new collaboration government. (Their ideology is Right-Wing Democracy)

Bataliony Chłopskie (Peasant Battalions) lead by „Olsza”. They started as armed arm of PSL part, but after contact with exiled polish government in London ended, it became most decentralized of polish partisan organizations. Terrains controlled by Bataliony Chłopskie are probably closest to what Poland was before the war, and are last remnants of functioning polish underground state. (Their ideology is Left-Wing Democracy)
OW PPS (Oddziały Wojskowe Powstańczego Pogotowia Socjalistów – Military branch of Insurgent socialist help) Lead by „Bazyli”. This mouthfull name says a lot, so with no repeating, they are weakest faction, since they were for the most part put out of conspiration after betrayal of one High ranking members of the organization (Their ideology is Socialism)

With Canada, I go overwhelming firepower and try to make a relatively low tech tech cheap army of 20 widths until I can really get an economic leg up and create stronger and more focused divisions. I would recommend hitting Africa with the objective of using it to hit southern France and Italy. You can effectively ignore air and navy and focus entirely on building a strong army. Ideally, your army will ultimately be made up of 40 width assault divisions and 20 width line divisions that complement your ally's forces.

The problem with playing a minor in a World War II game (as opposed to EUIII for example) is that in 10 years a minor realistically (geopolitically) could not become a major. In the World War II era, minors who were unlucky geographically got eaten by the majors who were near by. Canada, in particular, was part of the British Commonwealth and although there were more politics involved than say with a Scottish division, Canadian Forces went where the British high command said they were to go and mounted few "independent" operations. This common strategy for not only commonwealth forces but also the allies is one of the design flaws of HOI III compared to HOI II where "assume military control" of allied or axis forces results in a better simulation (not perfect because allies and axis forces did defect and the allied command never had 100% control) so in HOI 3 it is really difficult to play the western allies in particular. Any time you take a minor and play a historical game you should either expect to get crushed by a major if you are close to them or you need to stay away from them (become a war profiteer)... If you go ahistorical it should be very hard to do much. Remember by 5 years after the end of WWII there were essentially 2 power blocks and that lasted for at least 30 years before things broke apart.

That depends on what you mean by map modding. If you mean making a brand new map from scratch or editing one there are steps you need to take that no video or article explains. You need photoshop and a lot of time. Height maps are going to be the biggest issue but if all you want to do is mess around with states then use the nudge tool, copy the RGB it gives you, and draw on the province map where you want your new province to be. It is a pretty long process but I can give you pointers if you ask specifics.

If you meant "in-depth" as in "not even the lead dev knew how it worked" sure, in the end you could absolutely build a similiar economy system on any modern Paardox game, the problem is making sure the AI can deal with it.

We have records of Mr. Schmidt being a model national socialist in his youth with him being described as "stands the ground of national socialist ideology, knowing that he must pass it on." He only became a socialist after the war while being imprisoned by the Soviets. Event during his administration of Germany he was relatively nationalistic and was more NATO aligned than a communist fellow traveler. As it stands now in our power fantasy he is an early member in the growing reformist party of the government and sees his period as Reichskommisar as a springboard for higher posts in the German government.
Trauger was a real person, and an independence fighter during WW2. He was a high ranking member of the organization Miecz i Pług (Sword and Plow) that historicaly was subverted by Gestapo and led on path of colaboration with germans, but was disbanded when the rest of the underground found out about this subversion. In Iron Grip™ Trauger and other members of MiP were unstoped in their attempt of forming a Colaboration Goverment, because they believed Germans would leave Poland after they together deal with Soviets. The goverment quickly grew in size absorbing other anti-soviet organizations and soviet defectors. Unfortunately now all optimism is gone for the colaborators, since Poland is left crippled both in size and politicaly, only nominaly keeping its independence. And Trauger is one man keeping it all from faling into anarchy.
The reason why Poland is independent is because of long boring lore reasons but long story short the germans never cared much for Poland, it was just a means to an end, they were more concerned with Ukraine and the Caucasus for the resources and oil. In real life Poland and Germany tried to go for an alliance numerous times but they could not agree on how to divide up the Soviet Union with neither side wanting "the barren north.

Turkey joined the war when the Brits were about to kick the bucket. They had two options: Either they joined the Axis and recovered some of the lands lost after WW1 or they faced invasion by them. Fevzi Cakmak, Ataturk's heir, choose to join the winning team. However, Turkey remains a democratic republic, albeit a conservative one, and with no common foreign threats it has distanced itself from the Axis in the years after the war.

Cakmak was chosen as President because he was perceived by the Assembly to be a safer bet in the face of the increased Soviet aggression under Trotsky. As for the Aleppo situation we could say it's because Italy was able to conserve it during the final negotiations, but there's no reason we shouldn't modify that situation if we get convincing arguments in favor of that.

Your infantry divisions do not have enough heavy weapons to fight effectively, next time replace two infantry brigades with artillery so you can have 20 combat width divisions and be able to do a lot of damage. (combat width means how many units can join the battle at a point in time 20 and 40 are good numbers.) Your motorizes divisions are too weak to do anything other than capture points so you should try to manually tell them what to do. Similar problem with your tanks, they are all light tanks and you do not have enough of them. Put some medium tanks in there and experiment with ratios until you get to 20 width and you have a high soft attack value. If you do not have enough fuel for those expensive divisions than only use your tanks in decisive battles where you can reasonably encircle an enemy.

For the most part yeah. Because europe is very dense in provinces all I needed to do was just make new states and adjust some internal borders. In other parts of the world I had to put in more effort and make new provinces to accommodate new states. As for just changing the colors around for no reason, nobody really complained about the vanilla country colors yet but if you have an rgb value for a particular country just say it. Teamed up with japan to control the pacific together, mainly used a mixed infantry/arty template with support companies (engineers, logistics, signal companies, support arty) and was able to hold the south coast of china and support japan's offensive quite well, the soviets ended up charging in and we took them out as well.

After that I got bogged in the mongolian steppes trying to go against russia, tried to go around and attack through siberia but I would always lose any ground I made even with air superiority. Western and Central europe basically sat out of the entire war so it was just me and japan as well as our pacific puppets against the russians. Ragequit at about 1952 because nothing was happening and I couldn't crack the russian egg.

They did, but its not our timeline, and chain of events that caused Poland to be conquered was changed in Iron Grip. First of all Poland was not attacked first by Germany, instead it was Communists led by Trotsky, who attacked Poland as part of preventive attack at Germany. When German soldiers enter Poland, they do so to fight Soviets, and because of this plans of colaboration goverment (that existed otl, some underground organizations like Miecz i Pług (Sword and Plow), did plan establishment of Colab Poland) are realized. Because of this Germany cares less about Extermination of Poland, and focuses more on enemy they both share - Soviets.
Ok so Soviets are defeated, then what? Why does Poland still exist? Few reasons for that. Poland proven itself during the war so Germans left it independent, as place where Poles from outside Poland are resetled. Poland is also ground of resource exploitation for German Corporations, that don't have to abide to stric German Laws there. Most importantly, Germans first and foremost wanted to settle rich ukrainian soils, and with little ways of collonize all the RK's anyway, they left Poland to not stretch their resources even more thin.
And those are mostly reasons for existence of Poland. But we are not stopping german player from just kicking Poland out of axis and conquering in themselves.

EaW and OWB are way more interesting to me than all of your shitty alt hists combines. I am looking forward to the sonic mod, the star wars mods. There is so much interesting fantasy and unique content that could work very well in hoi4, and yet almost every mod ends up as one of the boring alt hists.
