I didn't want to look them up because that would kill the fun anyway. Those games are best when you figure out the solutions on your own.

>>

I think it's just using mass macemen that works. I haven't played the crusader trails in a while, but all I know is macemen and crossbows just wreck anything. Just make sure to buy the leather armor. It's more eco friendly that way. Save the cows for the catapults. :)

>How do you deal with fire?
use cheap units like slaves or spermen to bait the fire. pikes can also handle a bit of fire
>>
>>494344
Bait with some slave spam, or quick tanky units ex: Macemen, knights, portable shield
Once it’s set on fire, push up your army closer so he can’t rebuild it.
Alternatively, use a catapult mass to destroy the towers and any archers/ballistas close enough to set the pitch on fire.
>>
>>494344
Portable shields are really good/OP when placed amongst missile unit mass. They have a big target area so should be able to absorb damage for units close to it, but optimal placement on towers is to put them closer on the side of the tower where enemy attacks are coming from.
Shields are quick so you can just mix a bunch of them amongst a horse archer army and it should work with minimal micro. With a big enough mass, the only counter to this composition are catapult mass, fire, or well-maneuvered knights.
Can also use a lone shield to bait fires, or put it close to the enemy walls so they can’t hit it effectively and it’ll disrupt rebuilding during catapult/trebuchet/fire attack rebuilding.

It does allow the AI to keep increasing its army limit. Also makes it so you don't get carpel tunnel when building lots of siege engines and makes spearmen less useless as an optional tweak.
The whole AI system has been (or is in the process of being) reverse engineered, people have already made brand new opponents. Years ago Firefly released the tools for editing AI lord castles, but that was roughly the extent of how far it could be taken.
Its a slow process but one of the devs said that they might take it much further in the future. We'll see

Anybody else feel like the pig's transition from Stronghold to Crusader was kinda odd?
In the original he was a brutal tyrant and known for using large hordes of units to crush his enemies. Yet in Crusader he barely builds bad things. His armies are also surprisingly small most the time. It feels like the snake does a much better job at swarming people. I think it's fine that he doesn't use archers and pikemen like in the original.
>>
>>510335
Was he a tyrant? Outside the torture of Lord Woolsack he was just a strongarm norfman engaged in a plot to overthrow the ruling dynasty.
Although yes, it would be nice if he used archers in crusader. Since as it stand he has 0 offensive power and gets completely shit on by catapults on defense.

>>
>>494344
The caliph is really vulnerable to siege engines.
>>
>>513038
Every AI lord is vulnerable to catapults.
>>
>>513045
Most of the stronger ones atleast have ballista, while the caliph has nothing that can reach them and a castle that's made from the most fragile towers there are.
I think it's save to say he's particularily vulnerable.
>>
>>513049
That's true, but all you have to do is bring up archers behind mobile shields to distract them. Engineer shields are the most overpowered unit in the game.
>>
>>513049
The caliph usually has two to four fire ballista around his castle. So technically he has a counter. Practically any AI that uses catapults will wreck him.

I'd love a game like Stronghold 1 or Stronghold Crusader but with different factions available: on top of medieval Europe, also ancient Rome, medieval Islam, imperial China, Edo period Japan, etc...

Also, when happiness becomes too negative, instead of the villagers just leaving, it would be more interesting if some of the villagers randomly became "rebels" (they would behave like enemy units, attacking the lord and the soldiers).
However, unlike the retarded criminal mechanic of Stronghold 2, the workplaces of those "rebels" would treat them as if they had died, and thus another villager would replace the "rebel" in their workplace.

Another thing I'd like to change is how building good things (gardens, etc) and bad things (torture devices, etc) give positive or negative bonuses to the military units.
I think those bonuses should be unrelated to building good or bad things, instead they should correlate with happiness: high happiness gives a positive bonus to the soldiers, low happiness gives a negative bonus.
But I agree that building good and bad things should increase/decrease happiness and decrease/increase productivity.

Also, I'd like some non-military artisans: a carpenter that makes furniture out of wood, a smith that makes metal pots out of iron, a potter that makes ceramics out of stone, and a tailor that makes clothes out of wool (a new resource).
The goods produced by these artisans could be sold at a high price at the marketplace, and they could also be "consumed" by the villagers, like food is (but at a much slower rate). Unlike food, these goods wouldn't be necessary to keep basic happiness, but providing them to the villagers would make them much happier.

Also, more "service" buildings that raise happiness, similar to the churches and the inn. Maybe a school (or academy, or university, or whatever you want to call it), a theatre, a brothel, a hospital (replacing the apothecary), etc.

I played 2 when I was a kid but I had no idea what I was doing because I was a dumb kid.

Strongnhold HD campaign, then Stronghold Crusader historical campaigns. Finally, the Crusader skirmish trail (consider getting the AI patch mod).
Optional after:
Stronghold 2, interesting change and addition of castle building mechanics but the combat and graphics feel wonky because of the change to a 3D engine.
Stronghold Europe, Crusader mod that takes the game back to the theme of medieval Europe of the original with the added content of Crusader+Skirmishes with limited building options for every level (very challenging desu).

They're obviously retarded, it has been proven again and again and Warlords was the final nail in the coffin. There must be no original devs left in Firefly or they just had mad luck with the first two games

I've come to the conclusion that it's not a matter of incompetence but outright malice. They know what we want and how to deliver, but they're just going to keep skirting around it just to fuck with us.

Maybe it's denial and they don't want to admit to themselves the peaked nearly twenty years ago.

Reminds me of a time I played a map vs all the AI lords and 2x Wolf, but Rat was stuck inbetween 2 wolves and built his base in such a way he had no way out.
Killed everyone off 1 by 1, decided to just swarm Rat with an army of knights and pikemen. I sent in over 200 knights and 400 pikemen to break down a single all and charge him directly.
He had a little pack of spearmen bugged out at the entrance of his keep, where the civilians spawn, I guess he recruited them as soon as they were available and left them there without moving, I thought it was 20-30 spearmen tops stuck in there.
Man I tell you once I opened that wall down I did not expect 3k spearmen to sprint into the breach and delete my army.

You mean pikemen, spearmen die when anyone looks at them funny
>>
>>538952
Spearmen's worst weakness are archers. If you provide cover fire for them with your own archers, or better yet, use them on defense in the aggressive stance (so they get to sprint) they won't melt instantly.
Pikemen, swordsmen and arabian swordsmen are all too slow to defend properly as most quick skirmish units like macemen, horse archers or slaves can bypass them and cause damage to your economy. Although spearmen+pikemen is a nice combo since they require the same infrastructure, so you can start producing pikemen cheaply as soon as you get access to iron. In this situation spearmen intercept quick enemy units and slow them down enough to let pikemen catch up.

Honestly it's not bad. I'm enjoying the campaign so far. It looks nice and it does have a comfy feeling to it when you're just watching your people going on their day to day business.
Not to say that there aren't issues. The game clearly needed way more polishing. Disregarding things like certain graphical assets like the cutscenes not being finished or the lack of enemy lord interaction some other issues could've easily been patched. By that I mean randomly T-posing units, units getting stuck or grass/trees clipping into a church's inside.

There doesn't exist more lazy HD version of any game than Stronghold. They literally, unironically, merely only zoomed out camera and filled everything else with repeating texture and charged money for this. Main menu especially looks fucking pathetic and bad. It doesn't even have normal server browser or steam workshop even though it fucking begs for it.
>>
>>545373
>The game clearly needed way more polishing.
They need to rebuild the game from scratch, back to the design board. It's less of a castle sim and more like a rural commune sim. First, they need to bring back grid based building placement and remove the hovel distance limitation. Also, IIRC the day-night cycle has no bearing on the economic activities as it is only there for frustrating night sieges.

That being said, the game is good at what it does, not counting the bugs and glitches. The music is great and the comfy feeling is there, I like that they replaced the convoluted SH2 feasts with simpler banquets. But a decade later, the game is still very barebone with no skirmish for replay value.
>>
>>545818

>the game is still very barebone with no skirmish for replay value
They probably ran out of time and money before they got to do skirmish AI.
