>Menace is a turn-based tactical RPG in a sci-fi setting that sees players answer distress calls as they travel from planet to planet, rolling in to save the day with infantry, mechs, and tanks. Out on the galactic frontier, far away from the core worlds, no other help will arrive – but there is also no oversight or accountability.

>

Overhype Studios, which is based in Hamburg, Germany, built Menace based on all the popular elements from Battle Brothers – things like the army management, evolving characters, the sandbox gameplay, and the high degree of challenge – and expanded the game from there. Battlefields and armies will be larger than before and shown in 3D graphics, while the mysterious foe invading these outer regions of space will pose a threat to the player on the strategical as well as the tactical layer.

Hoped for something closer to BB, I don't rule out that it could be good but judging by the trailer alone the combat looks pretty uninspired.

Will be interesting to see if they just got lucky with BB or not. If it's just as good as BB was but a bit different, I'll be satisfied. I do feel like the aesthetics were part of the charm though. I dunno how a shift to 3D will change it.
>>
Looks ugly as fuck.
I wonder why indies who create soulful 2D like in Battle Brothers always go to 3D for their next game while 3D is always garbage if you don't have a fuckton of money to put in the graphics.

Battle Brothers is a game that will age well because of 2D. This Menace game already looks a decade old and it's not even out yet. What a shame.
>>
>>1529079
lmao fuck off /vr/ fag
>>
>>1528765
While it kinda sucks it is hardly as offensive as it would have been in BB. Not only does it have "brothers" in the name but women in medieval style warfare is entirely ridiculous and unrealistic. In a future sci fi setting its much less so since it's already a thing now, and likely to become even more so as technology narrows the gap even more.
>>
>>1528749
BB is fantastic. That being said the graphics of this game remind me of Phoenix point which just means that it looks generic. The jump from using a artistic 2D to 3D is pretty big so I am wondering how it plays out. Hopefully they do an interesting spin on this game just like they did with BB.
>>
>>1528749
I'm gonna wait and see more of it before judging it, but I do agree that for the unique artstyle BB has I expected this to look a little less generic.
>>
>>1528749

What's wrong with women in a sci-fi setting? I nothing wrong with that. The incels of vst strike again.
>>
>>1528749
Wow! This game made a really, really big impression on me.
I immediately wishlisted it, followed it, and requested that all my friends do so as well. We have to support good guy devs! I joined their Discord too! Their community manager is really fun to talk to - you should give it a try!
The effects and explosions look just incredible. The animations? Total War can go home and smell socks (sic!).
I think I simply didn't have enough turn-based tactics games this year, or in the past 5.
There is nothing wrong with diversity, or women in gaming, or in sci-fi. All the best militaries in the world employ women soldiers and mixed gender squad tactics.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Thankyou anon, I don't feel the need to respond to them now
>>
I always installed legends / battle sisters on BB runs so I could play with female brothers with more diverse backgrounds and also lichmaxx
>>
Agree that an indie or double-A move from 2d to 3d development is usually a mistake, but even so, I kinda like the art direction they're doing, particularly for combat. It looks and sounds meaty, seeing those vehicle HE rounds and machine gun tracers bouncing of the ground or enemy armor is satisfying.

Maybe they'll make do with smartly coded particle effects and mixed sounds what they can't do in modelling and texturing without a AAA budget.

"Narrowing the gap" is funny when you consider the said gap between male and female is much wider for professional athletes compared to the average people. Also even if you consider high-tech such as power armors, there is the question of reaction time, for example, or the fact men are more technologically minded.

Soldiers aren't professional athletes. The effective gap between a female and male in the military is closer than ever when your primary weapon is a rifle, your primary mode of transportation is a vehicle and your primary method of living is in a fortified compound of some kind. While I hate having women in the military as much as anyone else, it's generally far more practical and plausible nowadays than it would have been in the middle ages

This might be true for america and the wars it was involved in (after vietnam), but looking at cuckraine neither of your three points seem to hold up. Even if women can learn to shoot guns as well as men, soldiers spend 99% of their time carrying them around and not shooting, and the use of vehicles to transport infantry decreases the closer you get to the actual fighting.
>>
>>1529747
Yes. There are more combat veterans that are female now than at any other point in history. Thank you for your response.
>>
>>1529783
>civilian coming through
How often do you think the gunner in an armoured vehicle dismounts? Yes combat arms carry their weapons, yes woman are still less physically capable than men. And yes, the gap is still closer than ever because using a sword is entirely a matter of strength and physical capability, but a rifle is not and can be used to a great degree of effect by a less capable person.

I'll be honest with you, disappointed with the addition of women but battlebrothers was good and I like that this is both gonna be turn based tactics games while also featuring vehicles, squads rather than individuals for the purpose of infantry, mechs, and what looks to be a large scale compain with some degree of resource management.
If there's another game out there like this I'll go play it but the only other thing I've seen that seems to be attempting something like this is mars tactics, which is even worse on the front of diversity and with an unproven dev, and ascendant of ashes, which is real time rather than turn based anyways, and might just end up being a rimworld style sim with better combat.
Could be better, but everything I'm seeing so far, I love...

Any word on modability?
IIRC they intentionally obfuscated BB to prevent modding until modders got around it then they just stopped trying to prevent it. Logically this should be built around modding support since their modding community turned out to be pretty good but most companies are extremely petty and incapable of admitting wrongs.

The problem is the military wants someone to be combat effective, not just "bodies that need to be removed". Infantry has to wear, carry and use 120lbs worth of gear to be more than just inconveniently placed targets.

Judging by the look it seems to go more into the direction of tabletop wargaming

Infantry Units are moving in squads and it seems that they can have varied equipment among the squad.

Tanks and APC-s are operating as individual units.

I'm rarely curious about the games but here I will be watching with great interest. Small scale tabletop wargaming is an untapped market on PC. We had things like 40k Sanctus Reach or 40k Battle sector. But they offered linear campaigns.

Open world game with same mechanics and with strategic layer would be great. If they deliver we may get even something like Chapter Master with fleshed out gameplay and actual tactical combat.

>Unlike Battle Brothers, all characters you can recruit in Menace are going to have handwritten background stories and unique artwork
Sounds repetitive, but at the same time reminds me of, probably a bad example, Zafehouse Diaries. It had preset characters but you could also insert your own images and make your own characters, assign stats, write their profile, etc. If this game has that, it would be okay.

>We tried to avoid Overwatch, because we hate it
>That’s also why they’re going back and forth on enabling players to enter buildings with infantry – it bogs battles down and it’s “just icons floating over buildings shooting each other and you are not seeing the units at all.” Hence you can only enter the rubble of destroyed buildings right now.
Shit game. At least I know it's not X-com now, so it's off my watch list.
>>
>>1535246
I don't know why people keep making xcom comparisons. The two things it has in common is it's sci fi(even still it's more military sci fi and futuristic than modern xcom is) and turn based.
I imagine many people are going to be profoundly disappointed if they believe it's gonna be xcom 3.
Vehicles however, seem like they'll be much more fleshed out and the scale seems larger, and with how the setting and gameplay has been described so far, it really seems closer to battlebrothers in SPAAACE!

Honestly, disincentivizing overwatch is good though I'm not sure about keeping people out of buildings, though I do get the reasoning, with the way they have buildings set up and the squad sizes, there's not much you could do inside the one tile buildings we've seen so far.
>>
>>1535255
agreed on overwatch. It was made mandatory by xcom and all the clones copied that. Simply too good and too cheap.
>>
>>1535255
>>1535280
So what, do you think aliens should be able to walk right up to you and clap your cheeks during their turn, then dance away unmolested even though there's a dozen guys with guns pointed right at them?

>I don't know why people keep making xcom comparisons.
For the same reason people keep comparing 4x to Civ, even though not every 4x is Civ. They do keep mentioning Jagged Alliance so you know it's not something completely original at least. And I was thinking old X-com, not new, where you could also save some turn points and have reaction shots against incoming things.
>>
>>1535255
The devs themselves compared it to xcom, and in many ways it does sound similar (turn-based tactics with upgradeable mobile base fighting aliens in s scifi setting).

I'm really not sure, advance wars and civ don't really have overwatch and it works fine in those games.
Still I don't think the aliens should be able to just walk up to you, and they didn't say there's no overwatch, just that they hate it. I'm interested to see what they've got, I'm imagining their idea is that it's there but it's rarely the best option.
Which I like, encouraging the player to be pro-active rather than overwatch crawling.
Battlebrothers encouraged you to be pro-active as well, some enemies wouldn't come towards your perfect position unless they felt they had some advantage or you were shooting at them, which was very exploitable, but there was only so much they could do.

I would wait and see, anyways, but that's just because the game as described sounds like a dream to me, which should perhaps prepare me for disappointment, but I'm hopeful. Even if it fails, I'll just leap to ascent of ashes or mars tactics.

I would prefer to have your dudes back even if it leads to a less involved story.
There is a clear goal but I wonder if fulfilling that goal is equivalent to fulfilling the "win" condition of battlebrothers.
Warhammer fantasy was an inspiration for bb though so 40k isn't the worst inspiration for this, and while grimdark-ish I do appreciate they seem to have kept a different aesthetic from 40k and I'm going to guess it's going to have less grimderp everyone is irreparably evil and there's nothing anyone can do about it stuff.
>>1535516
I enjoy openxcom and would like to see a modern version with less ancient clunkiness but I don't think that's what this.
Maybe it'll turn out similar to x-piratez and people who play that will say they've already got it for free, but I don't play x-piratez and don't intend to do so, don't like it's setting or themes.
Like I said though, I'm expecting battlebrothers in space as far as the strategic layer goes, which I consider to be at least a little different from x-com. I'm expecting the scale of units to result in slightly different gameplay, potentially less lethality but more damage being thrown around, one thing I've seen mentioned is that since your squads will be firing into other squads, it's unlikely for there to be misses, thus guaranteeing at least some sort of chip damage. Not sure how I feel about that gameplay-wise but at least it makes sense in the context of the setting.

The way operations, which I suppose are equivalent to bb's contracts, will work seems interesting as well, in essence making every combat encounter multi-stage without recovery or reinforcement, if I understand correctly.

>>1535315

In all seriousness, I'm glad they've chosen to include women, because it means I'll get to consistently fight and kill women, which was a rare treat in Battle Brothers. Maybe there'll be some eyecandy or decent waifus out of it. That hijabi chick in the art pic looked cute, it'd be fun to spec her into an explosives expert. Could do without the butch lesbo looking chick but they're getting government grant money from Germany, of course they'll have to compromise somewhere. With most devs I wouldn't look twice but for the team that made Battle Brothers, I'll give Menace a fair shake before I dismiss it.

The REAL question is whether their soundtrack will hold up. Battle Brothers' was among the greatest of all time; Menace has unimaginable expectations to match.

However, the style of game they've described sounds unique and battlebrothers is very fun to play.
Hopefully there's enough males that I can just avoid hiring female characters without gimping my play.
>>
>>1538160
I don't see the point.

In the future where force multipliers are a thing gender differences are less relevant. Biggest problem would be carry capacity. But that related to doctrine. On the other hand females are very good at sharpshooting when properly trained. Related to the being less prone to tremors. Look at Peshmerga for example. It's hard to verify that scientifically. But let's assume you take 100 male kids and 100 female kids and train them from childhood to be soldiers. I would bet that you will achieve better average aim results among the female test group. Males have bigger strength allowing higher carry capacity on the other hand.

Forced equality is a brain rot of course. But Misogony is on the other side of that coin. Both stances are illogical at the core.

My ass. Men have better reflexes, aim and faster reaction times. Men have better endurance, thus they can be subject to intense physical activity and be ready to fight. Women can not. bro if you enjoy bosswomen tropes in video games that's cool and all but i don't know what kind of delusions you are on to believe it applies to real life
since the dawn of humanity men have gone to war and that's for a reason, women are un unfitted for combat enviorments for a bunch of reasons, that's why even today you won't find any type of infantry unit deployed in a conflict zone that has a women in it, it is something that hasnt changed at all in 4000 years of human civilization.
being deployed far from home in an unhospitable planet with man eating aliens is the most crayon eating cornfeed marine type job you could come up with, most men wouldn't even be cut for it let alone women

I actually think the hijab scarf part looks really cool, just the top of the hijab looks boring. I also usually dislike puffy hair, but it complements the silhouette well here.

fuck off, the only read flags is women in combat roles in game clearly inspired by Aliens and that they get some funding from germ government so there is chance that it will be pozzed more than usually
the other red banners may be limited pool of characters for EA but that will probably change and no words about modding support(but as long as they don't lock their files its shouldn't be a big problem), maybe also Casey writing will be cringe and that is all
unless you also count roguelike elements as red flag
graphics looks fine for a small dev studio and they still have their drawing man to made art so it should be fine
if you don't want to talk then fuck off with your BS

>>
>>1541416
Literal non-issues, except for nuCOM being a matter of taste.

There's nothing wrong with Unity if you're not a grafixfag, and it's a turn-based tactical game so the type of input device doesn't matter because the gameplay is slow enough that you could even do it on a tablet if you wanted. Which Battle Brothers literally did, and it worked perfectly fine.

old XCom have tanks(took 4 man space) and hover tanks, nuCom didn't, the thing is the scale is different than in x coms - your infantry come in squads(with many troops/models) and vehicles as single entity vs one man unit in x com
from what I take you can commandeer the mad max vehicles from human enemies you will face
>>
>>1541439

Oh, yeah, that's where that meme of opening up the infantry fighting vehicle and instantly getting 1-shot by a hidden enemy comes from, isn't it?
>>
>>1541440
that was drop ship not IFV(old x com didn't have them if by IFV you mean vehicles carrying troops)- it was just that tanks(or hovertanks) took 4 spots in dropship space so you could have one tank or 4 troops in its place), but yeah you are correct in getting BTFO by reaction fire when you leave your dropship on first turn

Though you initially lead your strike force of marines from aboard the strike cruiser TCRN Impetus, you'll quickly need to unite the disparate locals under your leadership to defeat an unknown threat. Just remove the namelists of the countries you dislike and they won't spawn. Even when I did keep non-Americans I would exclude turks, specifically. Learned to do this because of a mod(x-com files? I think) showing the flag of the country they're from even if you change their name in game.
It ended up being too bloated for me to get into though. Will give it another shot sometime.
>>
>>1545678
you can also manipulate ratio this way - just copy list names you want to have more chance to get
like 10 USA name list, 5 bong, 3 german and 2 french make usa namelist be used by 50%, bong by 25%, german by 15% and frog by 10% recruits
you can do similar thing in x files but you also need to change flags(or edit which flags are used by namelists(they use it in A-Z order)

My one complaint about BB is how repetitive and generic the actual scenarios/maps you play in are. Same for the Overworld map.
There's almost never any interesting terrain to utilize unless you're fighting on a swamp or on mountains, and indoor maps and those with larger structures like buildings are nonexistent.

As the image suggests, this is concept art from before the Early Access release had even happened, when the game was meant to look more cartoony, but after they had already decided to get rid of legs on the characters and make them chess pieces.
>>
>>1554851
This one's even older when the characters in concept art still had legs.
>>
>>1554853
WTF this looks like shit?! I HATE legs now!

Breh, the things that could have been.

True but the blueprint is there if the game had a bigger team and money.

It would have been the best mercenary game ever. I hope we get that sequel one day.

Its a great time sinker and the events and at the very least your first successful mercenary company really generates some cool companions and stories. I really enjoyed it.

Yeah but I would still love for better animated stuff in cities, maybe more screens for when entering buildings.

The excellent sound of the game and the very to the point writing helps a lot. For all the people who bitch about videogame writing being utter crap, here we have an example of great sparse writing.

I still grin of the event of the horse fucker you can recruit.

same, I'm calling local hospital tomorrow and asking if they can take off mine, legs are cringe

This is true in principle, but turns still take way too long in Battle Brothers. The 8x speed mod is required, IMHO.
I wish they gave me a summary of what happened on the enemy's turn, isntead of animating it even off-screen. Turns where both sides just move can take forever in large battles.

Sovl, God I fucking WISH the maps in BB were anywhere near that nice looking.
>>

they have somewhat better colors in early versions

Garbage character from a garbage movie. Ruined every scene she was in. Insanely cringeworthy

I want only men in my games like the homosexual I am.
>>
For extra "believability", not realism, that word is always used wrong, the game would start with mixed male and female troops and as shit starts to get really bad only male recruits start to appear. Maybe an occasional rare roiled up lesbian.

Sheet
Yeah the game is very barebone when it comes to campaign mechanics, including maps
Your brothers roles are pretty limited too
I dont need it to be full blown high fantasy like in Dnd but i also prefer more abilities rather than just dudes with weapons
We already have demons, necromancy, witches etc
>>
>>1557923
BB is almost there, its a good enough for me small game just for the battles and variety, with some more content and rp it woudl be perfetion.

The fact that its not full blown faggotry high fantasy but sitll feels classy is a bonus for me, orcs and monsters and necromancers feel as scary as they should be. The writing surrounding the alps and sound design is top notch.

Maybe sth similar to darkest dungeon, in term of power scales and ability varieties
Backgrounds would matter more too than just stats
>>
One of the things i really love about BB is that the balance between fantasy, humour and full blown horror is really perfect.

Its like a old D&D module before it went gay.

It just needs more variety, some towns maps, dungeons.

>>1557935
Backgrounds already matter a good deal, they could just put more events. I always love to have a thief and a witchhunter.
>>
>>1557914
Also all your starting female troops get pregnant immediately
>>

Just play Legends mod, it's exactly what you're asking for

And it woudl end up with female pilots on chair force, and nurses, I am okay with high ranking officers as well fuck it.

But on the trenches? Yeah no.

I always loved the women pep talk scene in starship troopers, that scene is violently evil. How can a society fuck up so much it puts women on the front line. Same as others that puts children.

That's nice and everything, but when is the next Battle Brothers DLC
