War for the Overworld is the better game. The only thing Dungeons has over it is a cute waifu.
>>
>>1374076
Not going to lie, she’s making a compelling argument.
>>
KeeperRL if you like indieshit. It's pretty good.
>>
>>1374063
Wasn't Dungeons the one that looked like DK but was actually more of a theme park builder where you had to entertain the heroes or some shit? Or was that a different game?
>>
>>1374099
that was dungeons.
i thought it was kinda neat in the first one.
you had to decorate your dungeon to make it more appealing to heroes.
>>
>>1374076
The overworld combat is kinda fun, WftO don't have that.
>>
>>1374099
just the first one
>>
>>1374089
This.

KeeperRL is fantastic, and content is still being made.
>>
Back when I was still using gabenstore, War for the Overworld was pretty good for a Unity game. Buggy, leaking memory and too hungry for what it was, but still pretty good. It is more similar to DK2 than DK1.
>>
>>1374099
The first one, the later ones were just straight up DK.
Such a great concept too, shame it was so undercooked and badly balanced.
>>
Neither one really holds up to the DK games. If you're gonna get one I'd suggest Dungeons. The overworld is an interesting touch, and the different factions add a little bit of variety, plus hot elf chick.
>>
>>1374076
She's cute but the narrator and dialogue makes me want to either blow my brains out or turn the game off. I haven't been able to play it it's too cringe
>>
>>1374471
Yeah the writing in all of the Dungeons games is spectacularly bad.
>>
>>1374504
It's like bottom of the barrel children's game tier.
>>
>>1374063
War for the overworld feels most like DK2 for me. Fun game, worth a buy.

I played Dungeons 1 years ago and it was absolute shite. It looked like dungeon keeper but wasn't at all. Really dumb concept. I don't know if 2 and 3 changed that at all.

Ah so it was just the first game.

>>1374531
Posters above say that gimmick was only the first game and the sequels are more traditional.

strong arguments in favour of dungeons 3

Got nothing on the original...
>>
>>1374099
The first one was. Rest are hundo percent DK clone

>>
>>1374301
You're saying War for the Overworld doesn't feature war in the overworked?
>>
>>1374076
War for the Overworld is the better game, but Dungeons has more soul – it's incredibly earnest (or "cringe" if you're a teen).

Neither of them captures the humor of Dungeon Keeper though, so they come across as mostly corny. I don't think any games have really got the tone right since Overlord, and those were a totally different genre.

Do you guys know of any other dungeon games that are good? I feel like dungeon building books have been advancing by leaps and bounds but video games, the origin of the genre, are stuck aping Dungeon Keeper with no innovations or anything for years and years. At this point the best dungeon game may be Dwarf Fortress, which is not a dungeon game.
>>
>>1375354
Overlord was amazing. So Dungeon Keeper very similar to Overlord in tone? Or the other way around I guess...
>>
>>1375338
Yup, it is pure dungeon combat.
>>
It is pay day......

One of your imps does a great impression of you. He can even do the ears.
>>
KeeperRL is pretty cool. Like Dungeon Keeper mixed with a bit of Dwarf Fortress.
>>
>>1376185
Is there a game mode where you get waves of adventurers coming in? It seemed to me like it's mostly just building up troops and then invading somewhere else.
>>
>>1376279
There's definitely invasions in it too. And yes there is an endless mode that can be enabled in the options that turns the game into a wave survival game instead if you want to focus on defense.
>>
which one was the dungeon game where you could send your minions out to the surface world and destroy shit?
I vaguely remember playing a game like that years ago
>>
>>1376438
Did you control them on the overworld? If so, Dungeons 3 lets you do that.
>>
>>1376450
yes, it must have been dungeon 3 then
it's been too long
>>
every dungeon game is shit compared to the original dungeon keeper
don't bother unless graphics are actually that important for you (but then you should kill yourself)
>>
>>1374063
Dungeons 3 is a theme park game.
War for the overlord is an APM focused game.
Pick your poison.
>>
>>1375383
I think Overlord is a decent comparison to the humour in Dungeons 3, but I think that the Overlord games definitely did it better.
>>
>>1376185
>Like Dungeon Keeper mixed with a bit of Dwarf Fortress.
I have a theory that DF was heavily inspired by DK. The gameplay is similar except DF has much more stuff added to it and is 3d. Also the highlighting in DF is the same exact piss yellow the highlighting in DK1 is.
>>
>>1375336
non frige bodies. they actually have female proportions
>>
>>1377185
Toady has never mentioned it. I think it's more likely that he was inspired by a lot of the same stuff that also inspired Dungeon Keeper.
>>
>>1375354
>Dungeons has more soul
Memes and references aren't soul.
>>
>>1377368
It's for sure not the only inspiration but the game is basically 3D DK on steroids.
>>
>>1377398
I don't disagree that there are similarities, but "it's about people who live underground and build things" sums most of them up. Everything else, like being tile-based, is pretty much universal to how games worked in those days.
>>
>>1377062
The luxury of having a good writer
>>
>>1377778
>Everything else, like being tile-based, is pretty much universal to how games worked in those days.
Digging indirectly through your minions that you can't directly control is pretty distinctly dungeon keeper. It even has the same piss yellow highlight color, at least in the ascii version. I haven't played the steam DF yet.
>>
>>1376294
>endless mode
I only see "campaign" and "single map" in the modes when starting, where do you find Endless?
>>
>>1374063
This shouldn't even be a fucking question. War for the overworld is the true spiritual successor to DK1/2. Dungeons is fucking garbage trash tier shit.
>>
>>1377939
IIRC once you beat the last enemy faction in either mode you can continue that save in Endless mode.
>>
>>1377185
Dwarf fortress evolved out of a dig dug type game about a mutant miner going into the earth for mutagenic goo, which they would then use to grow my arms to dig better, they then decided to make it about managing a minimg operation which spiraled into dwarf fortress so pretty different types of inspiration
>>
>>1375354
>Dungeons has more soul
Throwing le funny reddit quips at you all the time isn't "soul", you absolute cretin.

Dungeon Keeper FX!

this

>moving military requires you to control a unit "captain." attacking alone is suicide, but controlling a squad is either jank as fuck where they follow along and you basically pray they know what they're doing, or micro-hell where you have to control every unit in the squads every turn. the most you get is telling them to hang around and guard an area.
>there is no screen telling you what equipment you've got in what numbers. how many fucking clubs do we have? who the fuck knows! hope you like to squint into your equipment stockpiles! bonus points: don't forget to go over your military, one by one, to make sure they've actually got gear equipped (they're usually good about it).
>why, in the GOD DAMN FUCK, is endless survival not just an option available from the start?
>dungeon design is extremely basic. you dig out some halls and rooms, you set a couple stockpiles and throw down some furniture for the boys. okay. except there's literally nothing else. for example: research is tied entirely to who you kill so having a bigger library is meaningless, and a single 1x1 anvil can support up to 8 workers at the same time (where 4 is plenty for most of the game) so meaningfully expanding industry is almost impossible to justify. the clincher is you're apparently supposed to stay for a while, default settings give you multiple guys to go after, but odds are the base will be more or less done long before they're all dead.
>mods, the part that tries to make the game playable, break every patch.
fucking hell, this isn't even everything
