I’d love to see them make some sort of modern AoE, but I do have to question how they could possibly do a resource gathering aspect. It sounds like the game would've been just plain silly, which is probably why it wasn't made. A sci-fi AoE5 would be a lot easier to put together, I mean Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds worked well enough.

You can't just shove the entire WW1 into Age 1 because the first age is when you start with nothing and you're trying to get to Age 2 asap. The most sane way of handling AoE4 would be to forget about including the whole 20th century and just focus on WWII because the differences between each decade are just too drastic.

I had similar musings for the potential AoE5, where except instead of national empires you'd have corporate empires (bonus points for using corporate lingo like: interns instead of villagers, human resources instead of barracks, executive headhunters instead of monks, etc. kinda like picrel), and you'd compete for your claim of various planets with the use of brute force, marketing and red tape.
The ages would be like: Landing Phase > Terraforming Phase > Leverage Phase > Takeover Phase. I have a silly idea to reuse literal AoE2 militia (just a guy in a space suit with a copper pipe club in hand) as a starting unit to show how war never changes.

Also AOE4 should have gone back to Stone Age-bronze age-antiquity-late antiquity. AOE1 is so dated even with the DE version. I don’t know why relic decided to make copy the era of the version that is already the most played.

AoE formula is kinda silly and only works if the scope of the game is vaguely defines so you don't think about advancing ages or farming right on the frontline. WW2 is a specific well documented conflict that people have specific preconceptions about and you have historyfags who wouldn't be pleased with that level of abstraction. You'd be competing with games more specially to represent it like CoH. I think AoE WW2 would have always been a hard sell unless they radically departed from the formula just for the sake of moving timeline forward.

I think EE1 has 15 ages. Half of those are basically filler and it's pretty janky overall. It definitely starts braking down as you get away from it's honestly weird in the first place Shock, Pierce, Arrow combat triangle in more modern eras.
EE2 "fixes" that by having completely arbitrary unit counter classes that don't change the whole game so knights just literally upgrade to tanks and the difference between eras is purely cosmetic (though all units becoming ranged shakes it up a bit I guess). Rise of nations is the same.
We don't talk about EE3 because it's horrific for many other reasons.

Those games were always subpar and only fun as a gimmick,

EE3 set out to solve 2 problems the game had, the filler ages and the stone age USA. Instead the game had only 3 civs, euros, arabs, chinks (called west, middle east, east or something in game) and massively reduced the number of eras. This sort of makes it a hard sell to the fans who enjoyed the blot despite the issues.
Another problem is that they crunched the eras too much down to like 5 and there were holes in unit upgrade paths so at one point you end up with a bronze bombard for siege artillery while your infantry wears WWI gasmasks.
Last thing is the game was just bad. It was buggy and unstable, had bad AI and looked outdated even for it's time. The gameplay and unit behaviour was kinda janky overall and not really up to the standard (check what kind of RTS games were released in 2007, it never stood a chance). I never went back to check but it seems like the game was rushed and released unfinished as a last ditch effort by failing company.
I have actually played the game myself at the time, but I might be misremembering things. It was mostly just a subpar and forgettable game in a year you could have been playing SupCom or CoH instead.

There were several games like that. It would just have been Empire Earth but much tamer in the campaign department. Or Empires: dawn of the modern world. Or Lesta's Agression. Honestly, i don't think that i'd wanted that from AoE.

It's Euros, Middle East and East Asians
The middle east has Egyptian stuff at the start.
East Asians have samurai or ashigaru as well as Chinese stuff.

You are also giving the game too much credit on what it set out to do. They simply kept copying the OGs.

Age of Empires 1 -> Empire Earth (adding in all the other eras instead of selling each piece-meal) -> Empires: Dawn of the Modern World (less eras, custom-period appropriate factions)

Empire Earth 2 is a copy of Empire Earth 1 with some RoN thrown in.
Empire Earth 3 is a copy of Empires: Dawn of the Modern World, but on a much smaller budget and released a year earlier than it should have been because the economy went to shit during development.

Yeah, modern world is probably the wost possible era to make an AoE style game in. Go further back in history and you can kind of see it as a tussle between tribes evolving into medieval societies as in AoE II, or colonies propped up by their master nations duking it off in the new world as in AoE III (while I find the game meh, the setting is genius for AoE), but modern world? Anyone who can make for a serious civ is already expanded as far as they possibly can, and building towns and farms near frontline in modern age just feels dumb as fuck.

But on the other hand, go further into future and into space, and you can get the excuse of colonies again - that explains limited resources and the need to grow big from just a small starting settlement. Not that I would particularly want a scifi AoE, but it would be a far better fit than WWI / WWII / Cold War.

It's also the end of actual empires having actual conflicts against each other. Most nations that had some significance at the start of the century became a meme by the time of the Cold War, so unless you write an even bigger fanfic than AoE3, you'll be low on material to work with.

Whenever a new DLC is released for aoe2 or aoe3, there are always people who immediately make new build orders and figure out the new meta. And a bunch of players just blindly listening. Chill out guys, have some fun figuring out the new civ on your own. You don't have to try so hard on day one.

Then they released aoe4. Surely people will take their time to get to know the game? Nope. The same thing happened immediately with aoe4. I was so disappointed.

You can't turn one of the biggest conflicts into the equivalent of the dark age. The first age ideally should happen in a period of reconstruction after a big decline, such as the end of WWI, the end of WWII, or the end of WWIII, you know, something that justifies doing a fresh start with little conflict and gradual escalation.
