Wasn't AoE 4 supposed to be ww2?
This is not WWII combat gear, anon.
>>1371849Early game would be ww2, late game would cold war/Vietnam
Thankfully that utterly stupid idea died after AoE3 bombed and nearly killed the entire franchise. Retreading AoE2 seems hardly better though, since everybody's just going to compare unfavorably to AoE2
>>1371853I’d love to see them make some sort of modern AoE, but I do have to question how they could possibly do a resource gathering aspect. My only idea would be automating resource gathering on a map the size of, say, Foxhole, so it would be a methodical ground-taking game with room for surprise moves like sea invasions.
>>1371852>30 years between early and late gamethat's retarded, anon. WW1 is better as Age I, then Iraqi Freedom as Age V.
>ywn lame a boar with a jeep>ywn convert a StuG with your chaplain>ywn plant mines on enemy oil fieldsIt sounds like the game would've been just plain silly, which is probably why it wasn't made. A sci-fi AoE5 would be a lot easier to put together, I mean Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds worked well enough.
Just think about it logically for one second. How would a modern AOE game even work? 20th century Europe is not comparable at all with Stone Age Europe, Dark Age Europe or colonial America. All the previous AOE games were about a small group of villagers gathering resources and building a huge empire. How the hell would that work in a modern setting? Also, wasn't it confirmed by one of the original devs that they never intended to make a modern or futuristic AOE? They just thought it was cool fan art so they put it in without giving it much thought. Or am I wrong?
>>1371871You can't just shove the entire WW1 into Age 1 because the first age is when you start with nothing and you're trying to get to Age 2 asap. The most sane way of handling AoE4 would be to forget about including the whole 20th century and just focus on WWII because the differences between each decade are just too drastic.>Age I (Interwar Stage): countries rebuild after the Great War, only weak recruits available, combat isn't very viable>Age II (Blitzkrieg Stage): first real infantry, tanks and planes, you rush the enemy or try to stall his rush>Age III (Escalation Stage): industry shifts into high gear as you try to gain ground and secure what you have with massed units, fixed emplacements and artillery>Age IV (Wunderwaffe Stage): deliver a killing blow with overwhelming eco/firepower, prevail in a trash war after resources are depleted, or complete your nuclear bomb project (wonder victory)
>>1371913>Stage instead of ageClever, I like it.
>>1371907Like Empire Earth.
>>1371919How does Empire Earth work? Doesn't it start in the dark age and have 100 ages until spaceships?
>>1371914I had similar musings for the potential AoE5, where except instead of national empires you'd have corporate empires (bonus points for using corporate lingo like: interns instead of villagers, human resources instead of barracks, executive headhunters instead of monks, etc. kinda like picrel), and you'd compete for your claim of various planets with the use of brute force, marketing and red tape. The ages would be like: Landing Phase > Terraforming Phase > Leverage Phase > Takeover Phase. I have a silly idea to reuse literal AoE2 militia (just a guy in a space suit with a copper pipe club in hand) as a starting unit to show how war never changes.
>>1371913just play fucking CoH at this point if you're going to make a game based solely on WW2.
>>1371853AoE2 killed the franchiseinstead of getting a true sequel with 4 we got a shit 2 rehash
I dunno, the late game units in Rise of Nations were pretty fun. Modern armor and infantry with different uniforms and such. The Modern and Information eras were my favorites.
>>1371853why was it a stupid idea?
>>1371847How would you ballance non white civs in this modern era aeo?Niggers and indians flying combat jets? You give them thier oun unique tech, that straight scifiYou give them western keys that’s just boring. It’s not Viking fighting samurai anymore. Here it will be essentially 2 factions USA vs ussr
>>1371907You are correct on both clubts. Also AOE4 should have gone back to Stone Age-bronze age-antiquity-late antiquity. AOE1 is so dated even with the DE version. I don’t know why relic decided to make copy the era of the version that is already the most played.
>>1372140AoE formula is kinda silly and only works if the scope of the game is vaguely defines so you don't think about advancing ages or farming right on the frontline. WW2 is a specific well documented conflict that people have specific preconceptions about and you have historyfags who wouldn't be pleased with that level of abstraction. You'd be competing with games more specially to represent it like CoH. I think AoE WW2 would have always been a hard sell unless they radically departed from the formula just for the sake of moving timeline forward.
>>1371921I think EE1 has 15 ages. Half of those are basically filler and it's pretty janky overall. It definitely starts braking down as you get away from it's honestly weird in the first place Shock, Pierce, Arrow combat triangle in more modern eras.EE2 "fixes" that by having completely arbitrary unit counter classes that don't change the whole game so knights just literally upgrade to tanks and the difference between eras is purely cosmetic (though all units becoming ranged shakes it up a bit I guess). Rise of nations is the same.We don't talk about EE3 because it's horrific for many other reasons. Those games were always subpar and only fun as a gimmick,
>>1371927If you want AoE2 space edition it actually exists and is called Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds.
>>1372521just GLA them, nigga
>>1371871>30 years between early and late gameYou mean like covering the whole fucking history of the bronze and medieval eras? Or how about the early 1700's to late 1800's?The Cold War basically was WW2 gear at the start and modern shit by the end.
>>1371847Well, Ensemble died, and so did the series for years. To some it's still dead due to Relic making a 3D version of 2 as the fourth game.I guess Halo Wars is the closest we'll ever get to AOE5
>>1371847After AoE3 flop the series was dead until they decided to milk AoE2 fans with the 4th game but it didn't go well.
>>1371847>A single image of a dying project in a forgotten Halo 2 manual is reposted forever as proof that AoE was going to be WW2Let it go, you really dont want that.
>>1372591>We don't talk about EE3 because it's horrific for many other reasons. Please explain, just out of curiosity.
>>1371954Tbh I suspect this is one of the reasons Relic decided to do medieval era instead of modern one like the original "roadmap"
>>1371847Making an aoe game set in the modern era is as stupid as making a WW2 game set in ancient Rome. It doesn't fit.
>>1372871EE3 set out to solve 2 problems the game had, the filler ages and the stone age USA. Instead the game had only 3 civs, euros, arabs, chinks (called west, middle east, east or something in game) and massively reduced the number of eras. This sort of makes it a hard sell to the fans who enjoyed the blot despite the issues.Another problem is that they crunched the eras too much down to like 5 and there were holes in unit upgrade paths so at one point you end up with a bronze bombard for siege artillery while your infantry wears WWI gasmasks.Last thing is the game was just bad. It was buggy and unstable, had bad AI and looked outdated even for it's time. The gameplay and unit behaviour was kinda janky overall and not really up to the standard (check what kind of RTS games were released in 2007, it never stood a chance). I never went back to check but it seems like the game was rushed and released unfinished as a last ditch effort by failing company.I have actually played the game myself at the time, but I might be misremembering things. It was mostly just a subpar and forgettable game in a year you could have been playing SupCom or CoH instead.
>>1371859>I’d love to see them make some sort of modern AoE, but I do have to question how they could possibly do a resource gathering aspect. There were several games like that. It would just have been Empire Earth but much tamer in the campaign department. Or Empires: dawn of the modern world. Or Lesta's Agression. Honestly, i don't think that i'd wanted that from AoE.
>>1371847oh yeah that was a thing
>>1371853aoe3 is good and didnt bomb
>>1373209>EE3 set out to solve 2 problems the game had, the filler ages and the stone age USA. Instead the game had only 3 civs, euros, arabs, chinks (called west, middle east, east or something in game) and massively reduced the number of eras. It's Euros, Middle East and East AsiansThe middle east has Egyptian stuff at the start.East Asians have samurai or ashigaru as well as Chinese stuff. You are also giving the game too much credit on what it set out to do. They simply kept copying the OGs.OG creator:Age of Empires 1 -> Empire Earth (adding in all the other eras instead of selling each piece-meal) -> Empires: Dawn of the Modern World (less eras, custom-period appropriate factions)Replacement studio once he left:Empire Earth 2 is a copy of Empire Earth 1 with some RoN thrown in.Empire Earth 3 is a copy of Empires: Dawn of the Modern World, but on a much smaller budget and released a year earlier than it should have been because the economy went to shit during development.
>>1373310Good point, the fact that EE2 and 3 were made by different developer is quite relevant but I don't think it was mentioned. I know of Empires: Dawn of the Modern World being the "real" successor, but I never played it myself so I have no frame of reference how later EEs ripped it off.
>>1372581Yeah, modern world is probably the wost possible era to make an AoE style game in. Go further back in history and you can kind of see it as a tussle between tribes evolving into medieval societies as in AoE II, or colonies propped up by their master nations duking it off in the new world as in AoE III (while I find the game meh, the setting is genius for AoE), but modern world? Anyone who can make for a serious civ is already expanded as far as they possibly can, and building towns and farms near frontline in modern age just feels dumb as fuck. But on the other hand, go further into future and into space, and you can get the excuse of colonies again - that explains limited resources and the need to grow big from just a small starting settlement. Not that I would particularly want a scifi AoE, but it would be a far better fit than WWI / WWII / Cold War.
wasn't halo wars literally supposed to be age of empires 5?
AoE series is the game franchise equivalent of peaking in High School.
>>1371871>>1371913>Pickelhaube Age>Stahlhelm Age>Juden Age>Stone Age
>>1373448It's also the end of actual empires having actual conflicts against each other. Most nations that had some significance at the start of the century became a meme by the time of the Cold War, so unless you write an even bigger fanfic than AoE3, you'll be low on material to work with.
>>1375925I really wish the AOE2tists would just give AOE4 a try.
>>1375925That picture encapsulates everything wrong with AoE4.Unlike AoE1-3+M+O, they literally post pre-release bullshots because they KNOW their game looks bad in comparison.
>>1376426If AoE2 came out today anons would call it cumbersome, derivative, soulless, etc. New thing bad.
>>1376488“It didn’t come out when I was 10 so it must be shit!”
Must really suck being a zoomer and having to grow up with garbage versions of better games. My condolences.
>>1375925Go to your eye doctor ASAP, holy shit I hope you don't drive on the road
>>1376488yeah no shit, the game is almost 25 years old so of course it'd look derivative
>>1371847and that would've sucked assi'm aware aoe4 sucks ass anyway
>>1380875>aoe4 sucks ass anywayIn what way?
>>1371847aoe4 is great but they should have named it aoe without a number or something to indicate a remake because thats what it is. this would leave room for a ww1 game to fall back on if they ever needed to.
>>1371847i got bored of french knight rushes being a thing in every fucking matchi really really got bored of everything being the same, i liked how different the civs were but it got boring quick how shit the fucking meta was
>>1381656Whenever a new DLC is released for aoe2 or aoe3, there are always people who immediately make new build orders and figure out the new meta. And a bunch of players just blindly listening. Chill out guys, have some fun figuring out the new civ on your own. You don't have to try so hard on day one. Then they released aoe4. Surely people will take their time to get to know the game? Nope. The same thing happened immediately with aoe4. I was so disappointed.
>>1381677dude i really tried my best to try the other factions but i always felt like i am playing at a handicapi quit before i gave in and never ever touched france
>>1381680>dude i really tried my best to try the other factions but i always felt like i am playing at a handicap
>>1371871>>1371852I've been thinking the first era should be right where AoE III ends, around the late 19th century to the pre-world war I period. After that I have no idea how to shuffle both world wars and the period between/after them.
>>1371852The ages write themselves.>WW1>WW2>Cold war (Vietnam)>Gulf war
>>1383803No, should be:>Post-War reconstruction (late 40's)>Korean War (50's)>Vietnam War (60's)>Afghan War (70's)>Gulf War (80's)And yes I know Gulf War was 1991.
>>1375925>walls are big and realistic>houses are shrunken down gnome hovelsLiterally what's the point? If you care about muh visibility then you would argue for thinner walls as well but now cities look like bethesda towns
>>1383803>WW1 as age 1You can't turn one of the biggest conflicts into the equivalent of the dark age. The first age ideally should happen in a period of reconstruction after a big decline, such as the end of WWI, the end of WWII, or the end of WWIII, you know, something that justifies doing a fresh start with little conflict and gradual escalation.
>>1384025> little conflict and gradual escalation.that's literally ww1, in terms of movement
>>1371847>start off with three villagers and a scout on a bicycle>find your sheep>build 20th century London>villagers take 20 gun shots to kill an infatryman>bombers stationary mid air because you forgot to give them orders>army is 70 infantrymen following 20 tanks>a tank is the size of 4 men and a battleship the size of 20 men>enemy army chaplain just converted your battleship to red.jpg>epic micro means your tanks dodge artillery shells>build a football stadium and win wonder victory>thinking this is a good game
>>1384299Still a massive conflict that doesn't fit the brief gameplay period, where the most action you get is picking off individual villagers with a handful of grunts.
>>1371847>M16 with green camoNah, that's Vietnam in that picture
>>1371853>bomb3 sold 2 million copies back in the day
