>Introducing a new kind of troublemaker!
The Dutch love him, Buddhist monks hate him! It's another Koei thread! Will Koei ever patch NA: Ascension? Why do they fill their games with hidden, arcane systems? Is Gemfire too easy, even for children? The Aerobiz CEOs are here to assist!
>>
What Koei game has the best sieges, especially when you're playing on the defensive side
>>
>>1352792
Of the ones I've played, Nobunaga's Ambition: Rise to Power if you like positioning troops in real time. I haven't played any of the Romance games passed 3, so I can't speak for them.
>>
>>1352792
I like NA: Iron Triangle because you can turn entire provinces into a gauntlet of musket towers.
>>
Best NA to start with?
>>
>>1353826
If you like turn based, I'd start with Lord of Darkness. LoD shows you all the basics that the series will run with without being too archaic. If real time action is more your thing, try Rise to Power or Iron Triangle. Tendou is the absolute pinnacle of the series, but unfortunately not translated.

As a Koeifan, How do KOEI strategy games like ROTK and Nobunaga's Ambition compare against the Paradox Grand Strategy Games and the Total War Franchise?
>>
>>1354122
ROTK tends to be simpler and much more character-focused than Paradox games (other than CK2, which is vaguely similar in a lot of ways honestly but not similar enough to feel like a waito piggu version of ROTK)
ROTK to me feels like a trimmed down version of something like Europa Universalis. All of the best parts, plus some great unique aspects, and much less of the bad stuff. ROTK games are significantly easier than any Paradox game other than CK2 though.
>>
>>1354122
Not as heavy on text or numbers as any paradox game but i feel like the basic gameplay is a lot more fun. And unlike textbox events you actually have mechanics for a lot of things like duels and debates. Also in comparison to CK2 i really love how rotk 8/10 handles being a lesser officer, like actually going to court and doing random assignments. It's something that really feels lacking when you're on a council in CK2 even if the mechanics themselves aren't particularly indepth in the rotk games.
>>
>>1354122
Paradox games feel like I'm just ticking off boxes or waiting for a meter to fill up. The Koei stuff, I'm actually engrossed in and I love a lot of the hidden systems and such. P.T.O. 2 is the most advanced grand strategy game I've played and I love it. They have it down where you can micromanage fighter squadrons based on pilot experience.
>>
>>1353712
I remember playing that game so much. One time I had Japan spit into four clans. It was me an another clan vs the other two clans. It was so much fun.
>>
>>1354200
I put so many hours into the PS2 version. Loved it and really got wrapped up in the custom warrior mode, which I used to beef up rival clans for an increased challenge.
>>
damn I wish I could read Japanese
>>
What is a good game to start with for someone who hadn't played any koei strategy games ?
>>
>>1354385
I'd start with either Romance of the 3 Kingdoms 3, Liberty or Death or Lord of Darkness. Gemfire gets mentioned a lot for beginners, but it is very basic and lacks challenge so just skip that one.
>>
>>1354154
For which rotk? I was interested in Nobunaga's Ambition Ascension after trying out Sphere of Influence, but I read that their lesser officer positions aren't anything besides just a time waste until you can actually become a daimyo (ie, the CK problem where being a vassal only exists to become a sovereign)
>>
>>1354946
And now that i reread it, it's 8/10 and i'm dumb and it's going to take an hour before it lets me delete my post for some reason

Pacific Theater of Operations 2
>>
>>1354946
>>1354951
ROTK7 also officers low-level officer gameplay. 7 is probably the most realistic about it, in that you'll be assigned a task by your liege and you can either do it or not, while 10 gives you a list of tasks you can choose to do every time you receive orders. I think 8 was closer to 10 in that regard but I can't honestly remember. That said, 10 has the best low-tier officer gameplay IMO, followed by 8, then 7. They're all loads of fun though.
>>
>>1354946
>>1354951
Also, ROTK13 offers decent officer gameplay too, and has a translated PUK on PC unlike the others. It's decent but slightly worse than 7/8/10 in most ways imo
>>
>>1354122
I haven't played much of koei strategy games (though a bunch of some games inspired by them), but Paradox games are significantly larger in scope and less detailed/intricate; combat is done on a scale of territory to territory movement with significantly less tactical play (outside of stuff such as 'hide on mountain across river' or 'take enemy forts in a certain order') with little to no character interaction.
>>
I'm glad that a year after the first thread complaining that nobody talks about anything but RTK & NA, the Koei thread talks about nothing but RTK & NA
>>
>>1352735
Gemfire is good times
>>
What Koei games have hidden, arcane systems?
>>
>>1352735
>Will Koei ever patch NA: Ascension?
Is this a joke or is there actually some chance/indication this might happen?
Sphere of Ambution was my first KOEI strategy game and was excited to hear about Ascension.
I only got about 100 hours from Ascension before going back to SOI.
>>
Started playing the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series with the seventh game on the PS2. It's a lot of fun, I always loved the setting and know some of the characters from playing Dynasty Warriors. Game feels way more focused than Paradox games and their reddit-tier shitty little map-painting memes honestly. I intend on working my way up from 7 to the games that came after (at least the ones that are emulable because from what I've seen the PC ports on Steam aren't even available in English). Quick question about Nobunaga's Ambition: Do these games also have officer play?
>>

It's a joke

>>
>>1358523
As far as I know for the translated NAs, there is no officer-play.
>>
>>1358578
That's a shame, thank you for your answer.
>>
>>1358254
Uncharted Waters: New Horizons has a bonkers economy system. I can't believe they fit it all onto a cartridge.
>>
>>1359203
What does it do?
>>
>>1359273
It keeps track of all prices worldwide and changes the prices of trade items dependant on supply and demand. This includes a multitude of NPC characters interacting with the markets. There's also a secret where shops open at 2 am to offer black market goods.
>>
>>1358254
P.T.O. 2 has an admiral promotion system that I had no idea existed until a few weeks ago.
>>
>>1358523
Ascension is the only NA that has officer play, and it's not a particularly good one.
Taikou Risshiden was the dedicated Sengoku officer play series, but it was never released in the West and the only translation we have is pure jank thanks to the character limit.
>>
>>1359203
I will now play Uncharted Waters.
>>
Am I wrong about /eagg/ having a link to a d2d download of ROTK 11 in the past? On the topic of 11 anyone played the PUK with the english patch on steam, how is it?
>>
Who are some underrated officers (NA or ROTK) you've come to like for a certain reason (portrait, what they've done irl, etc)? Mine's Okabe Motonobu.
>>
>>1359728
Playable. It has the original game's translation but the PUK content is passable and decipherable.

1. Replacing Xu Rong with a desk jockey from Liang who pissed off the entire Bing army on his first day, then sending him to fight Sun Jian.
2. Not executing Lu Bu for causing the above general to lose to Sun Jian by telling his tired forces to attack a fortified position, then waking everybody up in the middle of the night when they tried to camp.
3. "Punishing" Lu Bu for this by making him his personal bodyguard.
4. Melting down ancient bronze statues to mint coins so low quality merchants wouldn't accept them, crashing Chang An's economy.

Yuan Shu and Sun Jian were the only Coalition members actually fighting Dong Zhuo, other than Cao Cao's joke of an army at the time. If Dong Zhuo hadn't shuffled his generals around because of Wang Yun's reinforcements (that were trying to fight him originally until they realized the coalition wouldn't do anyhting and they couldn't sandwich Dong Zhuo), he wouldn't have had to leave Luoyang, but I guess he really wnated to loot the rest of the Emperor's tombs after sacking Liu Hong's.

I'm genuinely beginning to wonder if the rumors that the Takeda and the Uesugi are secretly being strengthened so they are consistently powerful in IT.

>Have a 13000 Infantry unit commanded by Katsuie and Hideyoshi. Unit stat is LEA 96, VAL, 97. Clan Infantry Tech is only up to 4.
>Attack recently conquered Uesugi castle, it sends a 9500 cavalry unit, LEA 92. Uesugi managed to fill their cavalry tech tree.
>Uesugi cavalry quickly rips my infantry unit to pieces.

Is the tech gap way too high or my initial suspicion true?
>>
>>1362105
Cavalry, especially with a maxed out tech tree, are just really powerful against other units in IT. It's possible to counter them with infantry + muskets though.

By the way difficulty affects events like flooded armory and hull splits, you can sink if you flee or finish combat on fire
>>

>>
>>1363891

what are the hidden arcane systems? I probably already know most of them, just dont think of them as hidden or acane having been playing PTO 2 since its original release.
>>
>>1363890
When a sub is hit by deep charges something you can get a couple messages "There is a split in the hull!" or "Resurface tanks damaged!", That makes the sub surface and act like a normal ship one of those actually destroys the sub after battle, there is actually a lot of messages
>Bridge has been bombed!(kills your commander if flagship recibes it, I heard that reduces experience)
>Torpedo lunch tubes damaged!(you can't launch torpedoes and deep charges)
>Armory flooded(Ship can't attack or launch aircraft)
>Hangar bombed!(some aircraft is destroyed)
>Rudder damaged!(Ship can't steer)
>Fire on Port/Starboard(reduces hull every turn in said side, if you finish/retreat like that ship can sink(ship name sank) during turns, Ship doesn't contribute anti-air during a air raid
>>
>>1363968
Does a good job of describing it.>>1363996
Also admirals have an experience/promotion system. Rumors also that the corresponding colors that border commander's portraits indicates their affinity (blue means better at gunnery battles, green for leading Marines, ect). Also, if you take all the British ports early in the war and if you have a military pact with Germany, they will send a Bismark class ship and the Prince Eugen to the Pacific.

After playing as the Oda, I decided that the Date clan would be a more challenging choice.

First attempt got me killed by the Uesugi, now I'm barely managed to survive although the Takeda will kill me if the Uesugi is destroyed.

You guys aren't kidding about how powerful cavalry units are, my units are holding their own against the mighty Takeda and Uesugi and all of us are evenly matched in cavalry tech (We all have tech up to that Saddle tech after Horse Armor).

How long will I get Date Masamune?
>>
>>1365954
should be around 1582
>>
>>1365954
Does this game allow you to swap daimyo so you can get him early?
>>
>>1366314
No, but you can create his doppleganger in create an officer mode and have him appear whenever and wherever you wish.
>>
>>1366314
>swap daimyo

not in the way you mean but you can leave the game to the cpu and then rejoin as any other daimyo on the map
>>
>>1366314
If your daimyo dies, you can select his successor to be someone who isn't of-age yet. So if Masamune is alive, you can select him on death.

what was wrong with ascension again? I think it was AI not upgrading their castles and some other stuff. Didn't really feel like an improvement overall compared to base SoI though.
>>
>>1367244
because of the resource system the ai won't build facilities or upgrade their castles unless they have a source of lumber and/or iron (either from a castle they manage or, if a player's vassal, by constantly requesting gibs). there's also a weird little bug where the ai won't promote anyone except for the player if playing as a vassal. dumb stuff also exists like domains being player only. overall though i still like ascension better than soi if only for the improved ui.

>>
There is a different message if you haven't detected a enemy CV
Also game tells you that having troops in a fleets reduces it's moving range that isn't true but if you have transports in in PTO1 fleets actually get slower(20 knots) so probably was true on some point
>>
>>1369583
That's what bugs me about Koei games, they have these cool ideas in games, but they fail to carry some over to the sequels. In PTO 1, you could specifically target convoys with whatever ships at your disposal, in PTO2 you had to specifically use subs. In PTO 1, strategic bombers acted like strategic bombers in that you could target bases 1000 miles away. In PTO 2 strategic bombers are just standard bombers that can't be shot down by base troops.

Is it possible to get the AI to follow history for more than 4-5 years? even on low aggression it feels like history goes off the rails after like 5 years with no more events happening due to how finnicky the quest/event requirements are

What are some good youtube sources to get you started in learning the time periods of the Koei Games?

I'm recently watching pic related's series on the Sengoku Jidai (Which starts at the decline of the emperor's power and the rise of the Samurai class before tackling the actual Sengoku period).

It's a nice bonus that he uses game portraits and the soundtrack from Nobunaga's Ambition

Would an Oda Shogunate have been tough on Christianity as the Tokugawa was?

Doubtful as long as the Portuguese arquebuses flowed.
>>
>>1373353
depends on whether or not kuristians start chimping out or someone who's not a kuristian finds out about the slave ships
>>
>>1373418
Oda would use the slave ships as a bargaining chip to get cheaper guns, I don't think he cared about his people enough to cut out a good business partner if it advanced his conquests.

You forgot how paranoid he was , given how he ordered the deaths of both Tokugawa's first wife and his beloved eldest son when they were accused of treason against him.

The minute that he's given info that the missionaries are out to undermine his rule and power, he'd follow Hideyoshi and Tokugawa's footsteps although he won't isolate Japan.

>Since he grew up studying and playing jazz music, Shibusawa often dedicates a hefty chunk of a video game's funds towards creating its soundtrack. He is a stern believer in the power of a musical score and wishes for a game's music to enhance its experience, be it for pre-rendered cutscenes or active gameplay. He favors using orchestral music for dramatic or historical works in ode to the various historical fiction he grew to admire. Shibusawa oversees the sound editing and musical arrangement processes for a game whenever he feels he is able to provide active criticism.

No wonder the soundtrack of all these KOEI games are all consistently good, despite the varying degrees of quality.

Sometimes he uses the wrong portraits, like Hojo Souun for example (used Souteki's instead), and relies on Turnbull for information. It's good to listen in the background and entertaining, but not really good to get accurate info about the period.
Despite his slow uploads, I really enjoyed Buyuuden Japanese History, go check him out. But he is still at the Kamakura period iirc.

I was just listening to the OSTs from Romance of the Three Kingdoms 10 and 11 and thinking about how well-made they are. Interesting.

Same but it's for morale in Iron Triangle.

>When your unit drops to 30 morale and retreats at a the worse moment in battle.

I wish Koei would revive the Genghis Khan series. It has unique mechanics different from Nobunaga and ROTK like it's diverse world that spans Europe, Asia, North Africa and the Middle East and having different units that vary from region to region.

Refine it's existing gameplay and add modern mechanics from games like Sphere of Influence and you'll get a game that'll finally be a great alternative to the Total War games.
>>
I'd like a Koei sim with more emphasis on the political side of things. Thinking more on it however, it'd turn out to be a dumpster fire like Imperator Rome or something.
>>
>>1376288
Wasn't there a Genghis Khan 3, but untranslated?
>>
>>1376500
Indeed there is but it's actually the 4th title (Genghis Khan 2 for the SNES is actually 3rd title) but I'm honestly surprised there's a PS1 port for it and it's only 146 mb.

I've only done a quick skim but here's what I see.

>There are only two scenarios, 1189 and 1271 but there's tons of rulers to choose from. 30 to 27 respectively.

>The 2d isometric perspective and a city with a build radius gives off Civilization 2 vibes.

>You still have the familar Genghis Khan gameplay like many trade items and unit types based on culture but there's more of them.

Now I wish for an English Translation for this. I'm curious how this plays and why this 4th title sold even less that Koei had to pull the plug from the series.

Some guy apparently partially translated it, but the .exe is gone now:

Yo bros? It's been sometime now, how's the last Nobunaga Ambition? Did someone know something? Also did that anon lost his job again since the last thread?

I want to try Empire 9 because uhhh it can't be worse than 8 anyway
>>
>>1370581
>DW:Empires
For the modern games it's 7, for the old ones it's 5
>SW:Empires
Well you only have 2 and 4 because 3 wasn't localized. 2 is really good and 4 isn't that bad, better than DW8 empires
>>
>>1376740
Yes. Unfortunately I abandoned that playthrough due to the Takeda growing too strong for me.

Honestly, The Takeda, Uesugi and the Otomo are juggernauts of Iron Triangle. I was surprised the Hojo ended up eating the Takeda instead in my last Oda playthrough.

Fuck. It's painful to see that dead link. The guy should have gone to forums like the Kongming if he wanted help for that patch.

I'm hoping a kind soul here who knows Japanese can at least screenshot and translate the menus like this for players like me who know little of moon languange.
