Bought CoE after reading about it here. Played Dominions before, but they're more multiplayer games and my friends only play games with leet grafix so they won't play this (or CoE for that matter) with me.

>start game as Baron
>2 banshees next to me
>move leader into tile to attack them
>he can't hit them
>get raped

Tips for a useless nigger like me?

Thanks for reading my blog, also Conquest of Elysium thread.
>>
>>1345724
If you right clicked on them to inspect, you would have seen that they have that insanely damaging wail attack, and are ethereal. Best to steer clear until later if you can help it. I think banshees are usually stationary to the site they're on and don't wander around.
>>
>>1345724
Eh, I bought CoE specifically because it's SP focused but got bored after a couple matches. Dominions is better even in SP. I sort of regret my purchase but at least the money supported the devs
>>
Been playing kobolds. Any tips?
>>
>>1347668
Poison is good, so green archers are the best. Wyvern knights are good too. White is nice with its flying units. Upgrading your lairs is important since it makes them freespawn better units.
>>
Gems suck and gem using classes need to be reworked.

What's new in 5 to justify upgrading from 4?

What are some deities that feel actually deity-like and not like a mage with 100hp?

Boats and pirates to go along with them, terrain based on the tile you're on, new factions, different types of fort terrain, more planes.

Dom is the autistic version of CoE if anything, given CoE is the older series. How do you feel about, say, Age of Wonders? What are some other strategy games you like?
>>

Well I love CoE but can’t handle Dominions for the life of me, even though I enjoy the setting.
>>
>>1362279
yeah they got some stuff, most visible is amazons with tattoos that can buff them. I don't really like how they're integrated though, they feel very separate from the rest of the faction and the tattoos aren't very fun
>>
Supposedly humanoids that have souls go to hades when they die. Do people that are Soul Slayed go to hades? Do things that are Disintegrated or swallowed/absorbed leave corpses?

Played Dvali and realised you're limited to 9 gates or whatever and I plopped them down on all my nearby mountains. Welp. In hindsight, I can see why, since there's limited space in the underground cavern where the portals are, but I just assumed they might stack on top of each other.

They just give you a way to destroy unwanted portals or at least add more at a greater expense.

Anyone got any tips for modding?
>>
>>1366432
It's probably better that way. Your enemies can use them if they take a mine with it and all dwarves share portals so it would probably let enemy dwarves invade you easier if the portals were all over.

It was a grand game. I won. In hindsight large maps are a bit too tedious for me.
>>
>>1367310
I like the enormous maps, but 100% conquest is dumb af. Should be a victory condition when you have half the map or something.
>>
>>1367409
There is no "half the map". You aren't measured in terms of any sort of territory and the spaces you can capture vary wildly based on your faction, including what you can use as a citadel. The map also includes Agartha and the Sky, so even if you could "have half the map" of Elysium, that would only be 1/6th the total area that counts for victory.

You have the choice of taking all the opponents' citadels or killing all of their commanders. If you don't like large maps, just don't play large maps or just declare yourself the winner then you reach a certain point even though your victory is purely imaginary. Late game usually has easy ways to get around like teleporting anyway, especially necro who can move really fucking fast through Hades.

This game is just over a year old so that's probably going to be a long skip, not that I'm saying you should buy it. Why do people speak negatively of the games upgrading anyway? Aren't warlocks OP as all get out? All the other ones are pretty bad though.
>>
>>1351841
Personally I pirated 5 because I didn't think another 40 bucks or whatever was justified for what they're providing, especially seeing as planes are extremely half-baked at best. I'll likely shell out for 6 though when that releases in a few years.
>>
>>1374697
>Aren't warlocks OP as all get out
No, cloud elemental are. That's 1 out of 4 types of warlocks you can start with, and even then all it takes is some lightning immune/resistant units to deal with them. And you still have the problem of finding gems of the right type, which are probably on clouds guarded by lightning immune things. On top of that, they're only really OPish because you can get a few of them early on, they aren't really that great in the long run. Warlock's other non-basic-elemental summons are pretty decent but good luck getting started.

>>1374698
Why shell out for 6? It'll just be a few more half baked planes, a couple classes, and expanded boat stuff. You should wait for 7.
>>
>>1355761
Dominions has a lot more content, less game-ending RNG bullshit and more player agency. COE feels like an incomplete game.
>>
>>1375010
They're very different games. The RNG bullshit is really only a factor in the early game of CoE anyway and can be mostly mitigated by not being reckless. Dominions is the better game, sure, but they're not really comparable frankly.
>>
What are some strategies for more consistently charming units to your side and having them survive the battle in which they were converted?
>>
>>1379270
don't load up your frontline with too much chaff, keep it lean so that your mages can start charming earlier in the battle. of course this advice extends to most important mages that need to target the enemy/have limited range
>>

>>
How do I get into this game?
I never played dominions
>>
>>1382429
Good. That's the first step. This game is more like age of wonders. Basics are walk over tiles beneficial to your faction to claim them, defend them from random units and enemies, pray the world doesn't end and you all die.
>>
>>1382429
One of my first games some cultists opened the gates of hell close to me and that was that. Waves of demons and then I died.
>>
>>1382854
I like how demons are vulnerable to poison. Poison is either one of the best status effects or completely useless.
>>
Are there bow type special weapons or only melee and magical rods?
>>
Does Conquest of Elysium have good AI?
>>
>>1386524
It has passable AI that can play the game but is a bit timid. I'm not sure playing it against someone would be all that different however. A portion of AI and players would die immediately from indies or their first summon and it's kind of hard to tell if you're doing good or not when all it takes is one killer unit to wipe your whole army. AI varies a lot based on the actual race you select for it however, for example it cannot play Cloud Lords well for some reason, is pretty okay with dwarfs, and is decent with necromancer. Some races are just shitty in certain time periods which contributes to AI = shit mentality because they can't get started. That's just faction AI though, indie AI and the NPC factions AI are varied and generally aggressive and if an event happens, will be your real enemies.
>>
>>1386662
I guess I was asking if the AI is good enough for me to play alone. I don't really like multiplayer.
>>
>>1386967
It's not really a game that's played multiplayer that much, I think. You'll spend as much time defending from the world itself as you do fighting your enemies, so it's entertaining enough. Putting it on difficulties above the default gives the AI resource bonuses, so be careful about that, but it can be helpful to AI factions that have a disadvantage in a certain time period setting. The AI will at least attack you if it thinks it will win, take your territory, try to take points it's interested in, and more or less cannot see invisible things so you can ambush it.

It does have a few annoying traits: First, that it pretty much does not care about invasion events and will probably not try to close portals, so you're on your own there. Second, that it rarely ever goes to other planes so you won't get some epic battle across the multiverse in singleplayer, but you also won't be able to go into other planes most of the time anyway depending on who you play as. Third, is that it gets seemingly stuck sometimes when it's low on territory and commanders and just fills a town with units, though It will unstick eventually. It's probably due to not being able to afford more commanders when they come, so I'm not sure if it happens on higher difficulties at all. It's also worth saying again that this game is very random and AI cannot save scum, so it's likely a number of them will die early because they summoned something that didn't get controlled, or because they started next to a stronger faction or a powerful and aggressive independent unit. For some reason people call the AI bad when it dies off screen, but in reality they can do about as much as a pair of manticores spawning next to them as you could. Which is nothing but be violated unless you get off a lucky mind control spell. There are mods that give starting armies to AI and players to prevent this though. Other than that you probably don't want lots of enemy dwarfs since they spread out and get everywhere.

Necromancer is weak to begin with but if played right is overpowered and can easily snowball.
Just make sure you only use apprentice necromancer to raise the dead until you can turn your main necromancer into a lich or vampire.

>do people that are soul slayed go to hades

Do things that are disinterested or swallowed/absorbed leave corpses?
no

Crossbowmen should have pavises that count as large shields and be front+ and battle slow. They'd start off in front of other units and slowly get behind them. Units with front- should push front and front+ units forward as well. That way if you had both, the crossbowmen would still stay in front of mid ranks.
>>
>>1374719
>Why shell out for 6
The new classes from 5 plus however many 6 adds will justify the cost at that point and feel less like I'm just paying for the same game again.

>Pick Warlock
Lol if you got Air to start with, summon a few cloud elementals, otherwise prepare your asshole.
>Spend all my turns chasing snakes around my capital until a siren swims in and destroys me
Don't do that, go find a second citadel
>Most of my army is whittled down to a few archers as I fight dwarves for their gems
Look for money and trade towns and just trade for gems early on until you get a decent army.
>shitty apprentice
Make sure this guy can use the elements you main one cannot.

Gem classes have it hard, most gems are in the southern desert areas, underground, on stormclouds, or out at sea. For inland areas, you have to take mines which are usually decently guarded. You should head for the deserts ASAP if you aren't in the north. You'll either find gems or oases which will give you trade points. Otherwise, just capture some towns and look for another citadel while buying up archers or spearmen. Make sure to equip a summon whatever elemental spell for use in battle if you have it.

You can pretty much ignore any small animals and maybe bears and moose, just get 5 or 10 archers in your starting citadel and they'll take care of anything less than a proper sieging army.

>I don't know what I'm supposed to do to enjoy this game
Take it easy and enjoy RNG. Accept losses sometimes.
>>
>>1394625
I don't know how I'm supposed to summon anything early when I start out with no gems and even after taking over 3 dwarven mines, the production is abysmally low.
>>
>>1394627
Just hoard your gems and go for trade as I said. If you can get a few trade towns you can get a decent income of gems. Early on, just having normal archers and chaff to protect them is enough. With gem classes I tend to end up using the double income/quadruple price option on trading for a while. You should also be a decent caster so as long as you have some meat shields you should be ok even if you don't have cloud elementals. Summon classes usually aren't going to get really summoning until mid game.

If you meant this
>Make sure to equip a summon whatever elemental spell for use in battle if you have it.
I meant the set the spells you get that let you summon them in battle.(right click on the caster unit) You don't need gems for those and they only last the duration of the battle.

I'm going to give you guys the secret key to COE bliss. Ready?

Play in/with teams of two. Common goal.
Even if you are doing single player, give yourself two factions.

Enjoy your brand new game where you can do things like upgrade villages with your baron to get more blood sacrifices. Raise slaves with your priest king commanders for the necromancer to revive. Protect any class with a shitty early game and go nuts late game. Don't immediately lose the game when a snake walks into the capital you left undefended like the dumb faggot you are.

It's so much better than playing one faction, it should be the default way to play.
>>
>>1403106
It's not really good and leads to one faction cucking the other out of mines or towns.
>>
>>1404718
Play factions that go for different resources, brainlet.
>>
>>1405561
>upgrade villages with your baron to get more blood sacrifices. Raise slaves with your priest king commanders for the necromancer to revive.
Those rely on classes that all need towns (freespawn, sacrifices, slaves, and hands). If you use classes that use different resources then they will at best have no synergy and at worst convert resources that are needed to other useless ones. Witch making farms into swamps for mud golems and losing it permanently, dwarfs and kobolds needing to live on mines you need for gems, not being able to burn forests because the hippy factions need to gather from them. About the only good combos I can think of are Scourge Lord and Enchanter/any class that's dependent on mines and Cloud Lord + anyone because they can mostly just stay on the sky plane.

It's better to have a faction with mind control powers and take over enemy leaders.

Play pale ones. Chill in Agartha, then conquer anything you like. The caves are yours, the seas are yours, the planes are yours. Get decent frontliners, walking catapults, big fat mages that don't fall over at the first breeze, cool creatures, you name it. Hell is invading? You don't give a single damn, maybe invade them back through a hole you dug in your own caves. Fortify anything you like with huge statues. Laugh as the world burns from atop your nexus.

They aren't anything alike. CoE is more of a solo game. You capture tiles, fight RNG as much as your enemies, and can make use of multiple planes. It's sort of MoM/AoW-esque with less world affecting spells. Dom is closer to a 4x, devs only care about multiplayer there.
