Let's talk about this forgotten 90's gem.
>>1271191Shining Force II is better.
>>1271741Do you have proof?
>>1272208It is immediately apparent that the enemies in Shining Force 2 are proactive and aggressive compared to the first game's enemies who are much more static and laid out like a puzzle in the first couple battles. Most of the difficulty and strategy of SF1 compared to SF2 is figuring out the exact aggro radius of the strongest enemies while in SF2 you'll learn the hard way sooner or later that the enemy farther away will rapidly get right up into your face and hammer you as soon as its guaranteed the target will die in one turn.
what is this?
>>1272950A tactical game for the SNES.
>>1272975>SNESPretty sure it was GBA instead?
>>1272237>the AI knows when it will crit and when it will not>if it calculates a crit will kill, it will go for it always>if it calculates any attack will kill from full, it will go for it
>>1273043Its actually for the Sega Genesis, the GBA versions are ports.
>>1273223Which is better the originally or the remake?
>>1273682Depends on how much you hate pastel colors and bright color palletes. Otherwise its a translation difference and GBA fixes some bugs.
Why is this dead?
>>1275003There's a very active SF thread on /vr/
>>1273682Genesis
i know more people prefer shining force 2 over sf1. but if anyone hasn't played them yet and wants to try them, don't neglect sf1, it's a really neat game which shouldn't be missed.
>>1275869Did people really get angry at the ending of SF2?
>>1275890I'll let you know when I beat it.
>>1271191Why does she have pink hair?
>>1275890Well you don't really meet or interact with the princess, at least what I can remember with the genesis version.
Wasn't there going to be a mobile game?
>>1276782Canceled.
>>1277049Why was it canceled?
>>1277094Mismanaged company. Seriously if you wanna talk about the game /vr/ is the way to go.
>>1277094>>1277162Yeah the /vr/ SF thread has some details.
bump, it belongs here, dunno why people aren't interested
>>1280973/vr/ is much more active
>>1280973Look Anon there are 7 different vidya gaem boards. This board has already peaked a long while ago and all the more established boards already have their own thing.
Is the game not popular?
>>1271191Oh shit a rare Shining thread on /vst/. Been months since the last one died.>>1272237I will say that SF2 is generally better in most ways, but though I adore the story & pacing in SF1 just a bit more. Less filler battles + most fights have story significance, alongside a better ending scene.>>1273682I will always recommend the original, but I will admit that the GBA remake fixed some bugs and added replay value. I never finished the GBA version though. Also I'm a purist when it comes to the canon/plot/universe of the original; hence I prefer the story of the original because the GBA version added new stuff.>>1282332Among the younger gamers? Probably not very much. But I think a fair number of (older) people have fond memories of this series, so it still has its following or community.
BTW how's Shining Force Feather for those of you who have played it? The one on the DS.
>>1282384Did the writers hate Sarah?
>>1282741I doubt it. The game has so few lines of dialogue that even Bowie kissing the princess only feels natural because of the implicit expectation that the game is a normal fairytale rescuing the princess and marrying her type of story.
Here's the rant. https://www.deviantart.com/zeratanus/art/He-will-make-her-happy-537144141
Found this video about the mobile. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFK-kFq7aao
>>1284473the thing this rant is missing is that Bowie is complete sociopath who only cares about being king
>>1285739>is complete sociopathProve it.
>>1282384Can agree with most of this. 2 has a lor of QoL stuff but 1 felt a bit more neat. The GBA remake was fine, some artstyle choices and story bits aside. No clue why Max needed random lines all of a sudden for example.>>1283116I think it is more that they added that whole outro scene of Sarah getting sad about it that makes it odd, if it were just Bowie getting the princess with little else then nobody would care.>>1282387I've not played too far because there is no easily available translation, but the gameplay is pretty fun, it's a more active kinda strategy thing where you do stuff during the attacks more than relying on RNG. It doesn't quite hit old Shining in terms of feeling for the world or art but it seemed close enough for me still, it is also about airships (and I think airship AI girls? I forget) so that is always cool. It also remembered centaurs existed.
>>1285934>It also remembered centaurs existed.I do appreciate that the early post-Sonic/Camelot Shining games still had centaurs. Shining Force Neo had 'em, Exa had 'em, Feather had 'em, etc. The later Tony Taka ones had some centaurs but mostly as enemies. I remember playing the PSP Shining games and the only centaurs that were in the game were enemies you had to kill. No playable ones.
>>1286008The PSP games were fun for gameplay too, I really like Valkyria Chronicles and its combat system so that for a Shining game is cool. But the roster for your team was kinda weak, at least from how far I played through them, which admittedly is also not very far.Neo was a little bit of a disappointment to me because it could have been a fun ARPG where you switch between characters, but I don't think that is an option and your moveset is fairly limited. That change any with Exa?
>>1286136>But the roster for your team was kinda weak,It was weak for Shining Ark but not for Shining Blade. You eventually get like 15 different playable characters in Blade by the time you reach endgame, most of them returning characters from the earlier Tony Taka games (Tears, Wind, Heart). Blade is honestly one of the better, and possibly my favourite, post-Camelot/Sonic Shining game.>That change any with Exa?For me Exa is just so much better than Neo. I'll be honest, I only played Neo once but I stopped because the endgame bored me. In Exa, you get to switch between 2 characters with differing playstyles (ranged/magic vs melee/magic), so even from the get-go there's already more variety than Neo. Also:・Voice-acting is significantly better・More enemy variety (I think?)・Less needlessly grindy overall・Story moves at a better pace (you can finish the main story in like 30++ hours)・Less "fuck you here's 30 enemies in a small room have fun" kind of enemy ambushes, which were very annoying in Neo・Also I really like the romance subplotHowever! A word of warning. Exa reuses a lot of assets from Neo. Enemy models, dungeon designs, music, sound effects, etc. So don't go expecting everything to be new and exciting if you've played Neo before.
>>1286136Oops, forgot to mention: while you can switch characters in Exa, it's not on the fly. It's not instantaneous. You switch by going back to HQ.
>>1272237I had to replay the first encounter in 2 like 4 time before I realized Sara and Chester didn't have sticks equipped. Enemies are pretty good about grouping up on the weak.Actually haven't played in a couple weeks because my Sega Mini is still in the bag from Thanksgiving but there was a thread that reminded me and I'm done with Tactics Ogre now.
I read on /v/ that shining force 3 got an english translation.Where can I get it?

>>1289295It's for the better. Nobody needs to see SF turn into a shitty gatcha.
Shining Force 4 soon, yeah?Haha...
>>1291313Maybe if you ask Santa
>>1289823Apparently investors do.
SF1 was fun but man did it have some annoying fights.
Here's a video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXPz6cQzBTc
>>1294806Is there translation of this?
>>1294806What the fuck I thought the game was cancelled? I assume this is them putting together a prototype to convince Sega to let them use the IP?> I don't know but the rumor seems to be that it was put together to help sell the game to another company. That way Vespa/Hive get some cash and the game can be finished. I did another video on the channel discussing it that came out today if you want all the details. So it's all hearsay but I still am confused as to how this all comes together.
>>1294806I like how they were very faithful to recreating Max's giant chiseled chin. I gotta say, the animation work in the game looks really nice.

>>1299654No wait hang on "time travel plot"? Ewww, thanks but no thanks. Glad it got cancelled, lel
>>1271191this game and breath of fire gave me several fetishes
>>1302424To this day I still haven't seen any flying electric ghosts quite like the Gizmos.
>>1300275what exactly did you want then?
>>1302697Anything that does not mess with the original stoty.
>>1306037so you just thought they were going to re-release the original story with new graphics, but on mobile?
I just got back into SF3 and I did not appreciate that poison carries over even after a fight.
>>1308779It did? Man it's been so long I don't even remember.
>>1308949Yeah I got poisoned on the bridge in the beginning and then when you get out to the world map battle it was still there.
So what's the order? It goes SF1 -> SF2 -> CD -> Gaiden Final Conflict -> SitD ?
>>1309495What 'order'? Play order? If so, you always play in release order. But if you're talking about chronological order, then it's actually: SF1 --> Gaiden 1 --> Gaiden 2 --> Gaiden Final Conflict --> SF2 --> Wisdom --> SitD --> (long time skip) --> Holy Ark --> SF3
>>1309517Are Gaiden 1 and 2 worth it? Final Conflict is the first shit that comes up when I look for Gaiden.
>>1309522If you've played CD then I guess you don't need to bother with Gaiden 1 and 2 since CD is the remake for those two. And I think most people will recommend you to play CD over the original Gaidens.
>>1309621>CD is the remake for those twoI thought that "Sword of Hajya" thing was the remake of Gaiden 1 and 2. You're saying CD is the real remake of those two, then?
>>1309887CD is a remake of the game gear games yes, plus a new scenario after you beat them.
>>1272975>>1273043Zoomers. Shining Force was one of the few reasons someone might buy a Sega Genesis.
>>1310381Landstalker baby!
>>1310377>CD is a remake of the game gear gamesExcept Final Conflict.>>1309887Alright anon, here's the quick & clean rundown so you don't get confused:There are **THREE** Shining games on the Sega Game Gear.1. Shining Force Gaiden 1: Only ever released in Japan. Not sure if there's an English translation patch. Remade into Shining Force CD, so you can skip this if you've played SFCD.2. Shining Force Gaiden 2: Localised into English as "Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya". Remade into Shining Force CD, so you can skip this if you've played SFCD.3. Shining Force Gaiden Final Conflict: Only ever released in Japan and has not been remade. So, to experience this game you have to play the Game Gear version. There's no other version. English fan translation exists.SFCD, other than being a remake of Gaiden I and II like explained above, also contains some bonus original story content. So to get the "complete" experience, you can just play CD and skip Gaiden I and II. Now, if you don't mind, I'm going to sign my own posts since I am proud of having typed all that out.- Shiningappreciator
>>1310477Thanks faggot. I love having that cleared up. I downloaded CD and Final Conflict already.
>>1310477Thanks for the longpost.
*slaps your girlfriend's ass*wat do?
Evens - We get a new Shining game soonOdds - Shining is dead for real
>>1282332I only played sf2 and it was kinda eh. Not really a bad game. Just one of those games you play once and maybe replay it in 10 years.Always felt it was rushed too. Like the devs wanted to add more, but couldn't.
>>1271741I replayed Shining Force 1 recently and am currently playing 2 for the first time. I can say that there are immediately noticeable quality of life improvements like being able to see your team's stats at any point in the game, an actual map screen, the ability to talk and search without opening the menu, and the ability to more easily spread exp among teammates(since you get less of them at the start), and a selectable difficulty is nice(even though so far I still think it's not really that hard on "OUCH!"). I will say though, the songs that play when you attack an enemy or an enemy attacks you are worse and I genuinely don't like listening to it compared to the first one's attack theme and that makes the actual battles less interesting to me despite the fact that I do like the map music.
>>1314845I almost forgot the nicest quality of life change, the fact that there are story moments that auto revive anyone that died in the previous fight, a small change that's pretty nice if you mess up one move.
>>1271741Shining Force II is my favorite game of all time. My grandma got it for me at Toys R Us back in the 90s. Wow, what a time it was to be alive!
The thing I like about the world of the original shining force is the idea that as you're moving farther in the game, the characters, locations, and enemies you fight are getting more technologically advanced.>Start the game in a typical fantasy town, first units you recruit are basic RPG classes(mages, archer, knight), and the first enemies are standard RPG enemies(bats, goblins, and dwarves)>next city you go to is a magic school that is also a magic/science research facility which is an early example of machines being shown off>by the end of the 3rd chapter, you see there are guys developing technological advancements like mech suits and flying machines, and the enemies deploy the laser eye against you>next chapter then takes you to a traveling city carried on big vehicles, by this point you can promote some of your characters and some classes get tech upgrades, like bow guns and shit and your character wears kind of futuristic armor. >after the ship you start seeing guys with heavy artillery>next part of the game gives you a centaur with a gun>Enemies start getting enhancements like cyborg skeletons. the laser eye is upgraded to be mobile mini laser bugs and a minotaur with a big stun rod>near the end of the game you reach a town built on top of a teleportation site and your character gets a fucking light saber as his signature weapon>final recruit in the game is an actual robot and all the enemies are robotic, even the final boss has some mechanical enhancements as part of its designI think it's pretty cool to show the world is getting more advanced as you get farther along in the story, it would've been neat if the other game that took place on that world had stuck with that idea and we got a cool futuristic fantasy world.
>>1314845Biggest issue with the attack music is that it only gets good if you use the longest attack sequences, whoever made the songs clearly envisioned a slower flow of combat. Or maybe they would play on each side's respective turn or something.
>>1315478It is pretty cool. The quasi-scifi aspect still persists in SF2 and some of the Gaidens, but by the time we reach Shining Wisdow it's watered down even more. And SF3 is semi-steampunk, though I do appreciate that we still get a robot Force member.
>>1314845>>1315520the music differences are a little give and take. some tracks are better in one, but then others are great in the other. i agree that the pre-promo battle music blows in 2. i like the post promo music though. i feel like 2 needed more map musics, especially if we could have gotten some for some of the more unique battles like chess and kraken, or even if there was a specific track for enemy generals with a portrait, like geshp and cameela. the assessment that a lot of the good parts of the music are locked behind extended listening is pretty accurate. sometimes i really hate the initial few bars repeating over and over because every character and enemy are doing combat.
>>1316279Yeah, something like the one map theme during the circus battle in SF1 but for SF2's iconic map battles
Doesn't SF1 have only 1 battle theme?
>>1317660SF1 has one theme that plays when in a combat animation, but has 8 different map themes. The remake for the GBA eventually added a combat theme for promoted units as well.
Sarah's thighs and hips.
>>1314845The difficulty selection is bugged, Ouch! is actually the second hardest, with Super being even harder for some reason. That being said, Super isn't really a fun type of challenge, it just makes all the enemies stupid strong to the point where grinding is necessary to get past even the earliest fights.
>>1319074I knew that already, and that was the main reason I chose Ouch instead, because I heard Ouch is difficult because of the AI while Super is difficult because of the fact that enemies do too much damage and do double attacks more often, which just didn't sound fun to me. I'd rather have harder AI, than slightly easier AI that does a shit ton of damage.
Shining Force 4 soon™?Right, SEGA?Right?
Even if they make a Shining Force 4, which setting or time period would you like it to be set in, /vst/? We can either attempt to continue the old Camelot-era setting about Innovators & Vandals, or set it in the nu-Shining (Tony Taka) world.
>>1273682On the GBA they turned a character that looked like a cute animal into a pokémon that instead of having a personality and his own lines could only say his name. That should answear it

>>1339481>you should never play arthur unless you're seeking a handicappants on head retarded. all you have to do is give him a little love in the first few battles after you get him in order to catch up with the others and he's a rockstar immediately. after promotion he gains so much attack he easily 1-shots damn near everything.>mages steal exp and slingshot ahead of othersliterally your own choice.>birds are goodbirds suck DICK.
>>1341092Birds or birdmen? Birdmen ar okay you get them early so they make up for it with grinding. Most of the centaurs are not particularly better besides certain high stat growth post promotion characters.
Are these two right?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ww4zdLs38ZMhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbBqqZBA6dE
>>1342970I'm not watching hourlong videoes for this shit. If the lists has Domingo at the top spot and all other mages and Zylo directly afterwards then they are correct. Otherwise they are wrong. You can easily finish the game using only Max and those characters.
>>1342970i will never understand people that rank arthur low. he is consistently an absolute rockstar to the team. pre-promo he might not "stand out" from anyone else, but that goes for almost anyone that isnt zylo. afterwards, he's consistently one-shotting things, while others are still coming up short.mages are always useful, i can agree. however, i've never personally used domingo because i was always a waifu-fag and liked putting the girls in outfits, but everyone i've ever talked to has said that domingo gets freeze 4 just like anri, can fly, and has fucking tank stats. as such, i dont really see how you can rate him lower than others, other than "he starts off a step behind them and has to catch up for a few levels", which is baby bullshit complaints.also, birdmen take SO much fucking work to be useful, you literally can not put them high but others low for that reason. flying really isnt that crucial. neat gimmick? sure, but the work and dead weight they immediately are isnt really worth it. B-tier AT BEST.putting zylo in B is fucking retarded. he's absolutely top tier. also, he's better than hanzo, and you get to use him for far more time. hanzo really isnt that special. he's pretty mid. musashi absolutely S-tier, no question. pelle might be a good centaur, but he is in no way S-tier. also, i dont think he's better than arthur either. everything else is pretty accurate though.
I don't even know who's high tier and who's low tier since I only ever played the game once and had no chance of trying out all the characters.
Masqurin butt.
I'm considering a chinese emulator handheld, anyone here have one and tried SF3 on it? I think all the prior games will run on anything.
>>1349475I don't own one, sorry.
Honestly, if you don't mind the newer Shining games, I do recommend Shining Blade. It's a fun little game with combat similar to Valkyria Chronicles, albeit way too easy. Not sure if the English fan TL patch is out yet.
>>1282384I want to cum inside of sarah.
>>1343185People rate him low because he's absolutely terrible when you get him, and it's one of the most difficult fights in the game. It's a real chore to raise him up to the point where he's good. If you promote him at level 20 he becomes truly bonkers, but anyone you promote at level 20 is going to be extremely good and that kind of playing makes the game trivial anyway. He's my favorite character, but it's not a mystery why people don't like him.
>>1356874there are a ton of other characters that suck shit when you get them and take a LOT more work than arthur does to be made viable, and yet they rate them higher. arthur just has to catch up, and then he's functional by being on par or better for the rest of the game. all you have to do is egress and kill the front monsters of the circus, and it takes maybe 4 times. you can also use this moment to bring everyone else up to the point where experience gains start to diminish, and then the "difficult fight" shouldnt be a problem. meanwhile, hans has gained nothing but speed the entire time, you have 3 healers taking up space, balbaroy and amon fall off immediately due to sword limitations, lyle joins right before a full forest battle (and archers generally suck in this one anyway), alef who joins way too late to be any sort of useful, and bleu joins at level 9 which means if you want to do full 20 promos, thats 11 levels needed, and then a few more to properly catch up, and if you just promote at 10, you're still looking at at least 5 levels of straight farming gargoyles in the kayne fight before he can try to hold his own against other things. arthur needs what, maybe 3 levels to catch up properly? and then he's smooth cruising for the rest of the game. also its still early enough in the game that doing that sort of babying is easy since all of the numbers are small.
>>1347201Isn't she underaged?
>>1356605Look at her pointy ears. Imagine the earjob.
But for real, when the fuck is Sega gonna announce the next game? I don't care even if it's nu-Shining, just give me something.
>>1367661Why does she have little fan art?
>>1369186Because Shining in the Darkness is not exactly a fan-favourite. I like it a lot but that's more because it was my first ever Shining game (and also first ever RPG).
>>1367661>monkey's pawThey never learn.
This is not exactly strategy-related (since the game is more like a Diablo-clone), but Shining Force Exa has one of my favourite romance plots in any RPG. It's cute, it's sweet and it's very wholesome. It also feels rather natural, the way the two protagonists slowly open to each other and fall in love. I am very fond of it.Also helps that as a game it's way better than Shining Force Neo. My God, Neo was not a great game.
>>1367661I forgot her name but wasn't she like 12?
>>1272975how good the story?
>>1377099The story of SF1 is alright. It's what you'd expect from a Japansese RPG in the early 90s. I will say I do enjoy the second half of the story more, and the climax is honestly really well done.
>>1324561They are cute.
I'll never give up hope for a new Shining game.
