Recommend me some /vst/ games with dreadful atmosphere, hopelessness, psychological horror and depressing setting something like horror but for strategy games
I couldn't find any title, and best I could do was Rimworld with mods.
Also I want games not just missions in normal games.

Homeworld: Cataclysm or whatever they call it now. It's Homeworld but with a John Carpenter soundtrack and you're fighting a sentient version of The Thing.

Myth 2 for sure, the story is essentially a demon/zombie apocalypse during medieval times and the setting is low magic where you have access to very limited resources to fight against powerful monsters, everything about the game supports the notion of being against all odds, not only the story and cutscenes but the hardcore and deadly gameplay design as well, most of your units are regular dudes with swords and bows fighting against demons that can tear though an entire formation in seconds if you commit a mistake in positioning, I remember a mission where you are supposed to flee, the enemy formationi is larger than yours, stronger and faster, if they catch up with your guys they'll massacre them in a matter of seconds, the only way to win the mission is by leaving units behind to die and delay their deathblob for a few moments, that's how bleak this game is.
Also the gameplay and controls are very smooth, it doesn't have the jankiness of some older games, I can't reccomend it enough.

Just download the Project Magma patch to run the second game on the modern systems and the Fallen Levels plugin, it adds the first game's campaign, missions, full story included. You can even tweak the gameplay in Myth 2 to emulate the one in 1 if you want, though I've heard that it's just worse than the one in the second game (never tried the option myself).

In recent patch they also added the support for very high camera zoom. Just it requires patching the maps, and I've only seen the Myth2 campaign zoom-patched. I'm about to kill myself, I kept avoiding this game because I confused it's name with Myst and whenever I saw it recommended I just didn't read any of it after the title because I'm not into adventure games.
I did it in the first mention of it in this thread, the only reason I didn't do it here is my eyes caught on "hardcore and deadly" and the gears started grinding in my head.

It's basically just FTL except worse in almost every way. They took a game that makes up for its high reliance on RNG by being designed to be played over and over in short bursts, and tried to make a longer more story-driven game out of it. It's just awful. As far as 40k goes, Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2 kinda does this when the Tyranids show up.

No, it was something along the lines of not being able to dock to something again for absolutely no good reason, bots (or whatever they are called) not obeying basic physics and some similar things. Also the enemies were likely super-duper speshul not-magical virus/alien/whatever and thus, if I'm not mistaken, not really killable (hence the sonic stun thingy). Not sure about a genuine feeling of dread, but a campaign where you avenge a destroyed village or a space colony and build up to face a seemingly invincible enemy is a fairly frequent theme. Like the Allied campaign in RA2 that starts you off with a massive invasion and mind control of the USA, loss of the Statue of Liberty, and the main villain is just ghastly. Tiberium universe is probably bleaker, though, with the ruined Earth and all.
In Earth 2150 it's difficult to even do much damage to enemy bases early on so what you do is get in, dig in, mine resources ASAP and get out. UCS faction especially has a series of tough, sometimes deliberately unwinnable matchups, and even a bonus mission you get for losing a certain mission. There's also a (fake) sense of urgency with the whole 'get enough resources before the campaign clock runs out'.
>>
>>1271523
>a fairly frequent theme.
The problem is that it was never done right. Too lax, too comfy and not even hard and most of the time missions are easy as shit, even reading the lore doesn't fix it.

Yeah, I found out when I was losing missions on purpose to see the loss debriefings. Didn't feel like playing it at the time though, I hear it's ridiculously difficult, too. A bunch of missions have alternative outcomes depending on what you do in them.
>You won't get to see lava on the news unless you literally fall sleep
UCS campaign actually was kinda tight on the budget if you ask me. First time I didn't make it because I thought it would be as lax as ED's. The losses sustained in NEO's missions got pretty ridiculous in particular.
It's a strange game - you can be defeated in all the missions and finish a campaign no problem but if you win all of them, it's game over.
>>
>>1271935
>UCS campaign actually was kinda tight on the budget if you ask me.
Overall their early mechs suck big time and combined with only having unguided, basic missiles and basic MGs it puts them 100% on the defensive. But then you keep researching plasma and they just walk over everything. So not that surprising in hindsight.

i remember playing this game as a kid and absolutely fucking sucking at it, like i could beat 2-3 missions of the campaign at most.
i thought about picking it up recently and tried to watch some videos on youtube to git gud and that turned me off the game completely
the "winning formula" seemed to just consist of slowly crawling forward so you only aggro a small number of enemies at a time, not touching your melee units and only using your ranged units to basically do skirmish attacks (pling off an arrow and run away) against the 2-3 enemies you aggro
looked very unfun, like the only way to beat the game was to exploit the ai and scripting
>>
>>1262498
Thank you anon, I'm a very big fan of Marathon and fantasy strategy games, but I never looked into Myth, despite it being made by Bungie (I should've known it had great atmosphere and lore, but somehow I believed it was probably something janky and generic).

>>
>>1268968
Battle Brothers.
>>
>>1273921
That is true to for the maximum difficulty level or if you are trying to beat it without casualties. Any game can be exploited, doesnt mean you have to. Give it a try on normal. Its still a good idea to kite someehat, but you will only be able to do it against basic thralls, any other unit type will run you down. And aggroing the entire level is a bad idea in any skirmish game.
>>
>>1273980
Reminder that you can play it in coop too.
>>
>>1273921
Actually, while dwarves and archers are going to be your main muscle, the melee units are still indispensable, because there are still units that are too fast and too strong to kill and there are many scenarios where kiting doesn't work, meaning situations where the enemy army is just going after yours. And even in the ones where kiting should be technically possible, I often experienced the main enemy body getting bored looking at their aggroed friends being picked off one by one and attacking full force.
>>
>>1274108
And by "many" and "often" I meant that I can't really think of any mission where you could find a group of enemies and pick them all off one by one at your leisure. Also, the enemy has tons of his own ranged units and those fucks will fuck yours up. I did see a video of one guy cheesing one hard mission from the first game by stopping an allied unit from walking his scripted route, but you'd have to purposefully break your nuts and the game to recreate those kinds of exploits.
>>
>>1261132
Alpha Centauri can be pretty horrific.
>>
>>1274108
Agreed. While you do want to dispose of the enemy with ranged units at all times, melee is importaint as a counter to fast units/trow AND it is a "get out of shitty situation" last resort option. Adding to that, how you engage with your melee (angle, formation, choice of targets) can be the difference between getting wiped or winning without casualties. A handful of veteran warriors can take down many their number thrall, especially softened by artillery, but one on one they may even lose.
>>
>>1273980

I was busy so I couldn't play for long but tonight I finished the first mission of the Fallen Lords on Heroic, losing 5 warriors.
Not on my first attempt, but I play without mid-level saves.
I initially tried to fight the undead on the field, with 5 Warriors on the left, 5 on the right and the archers + dwarf in the middle.
I did not expect the undead to have reserves ob my flanks and so many of them too, nor did I expect their ranged units. I got fucked.
Then I decided to defend the town, with 4 warriors guarding the main road, 2 (+ 1 satchel charge) guarding a sidestreet and the last 4 + archers and the dwarf + 3 satchels defending the biggest opening, the one from the field.
First attempt, they all swarm the biggest opening, no biggie, except... the dwarf fails to throw the explosive. Warriors move in to form a line that tries to hold, archers try to deal as much damage as they can, dwarf throws an exlplosive killing half of my warriors while the other half gets overrun and my archers get slaughtered by those fast little fuckers.
Second attempt, I pull it off, the dwarf kills like 40 undead on his own. And those c>>1274108

this game gets pretty stale pretty quick due to the limited character building

Nexus: The Jupiter Incident.

Though I guess me mentioning it in this thread kinda spoils the twist.

i figured i was looking at the game the wrong way. i was thinking of it in terms of being one army engaged in a war, but when you think of it in terms of being the last remnants of civilization fighting for survival as basically guerillas, it makes more sense to play it like that.

last night i installed the game from the myth anon's pasta and beat the first two levels and got my shit pushed in a couple of times in the third one. one time i was about to reach the bridge and be home free but then a few ghols popped up and slaughtered my bowmen so i reloaded a save. second time i was just being impatient and let one of those exploding zombus just walk up to my warriors and detonate. i'll probably pick try it again now but be more careful and save more

I have a quick question, is there really no music during missions and only during briefings? Were Bungie still in that "no music during gameplay" phase that started with Marathon 2? Or am I doing something wrong.
Also, is it possible to remove the disk check without project Magma? I'm asking because I'm a filthy purist for first playthroughs and I need to remove the disk check for both TFL and Soulblighter.
As an annecdote, last night I had a dwarf throw a molotov that arced a bit too low and it hit one of my warriors in the back of his helmet before richochetting and exploding killing two other warriors.
Same dwarf was a veteran that almost solo'd the previous mission. Based.

No music during the missions, thats right. Dwarves are number 1 cause of death for light and dark sides.
