Crusader was a great game but man they did the Pig dirty in that one. He was so much better in Stronghold by comparison.

Amazing how strong an impression such a simple line can leave. It's over 12 years since I played AOEII, and I still instantly recognized it.

The worst Stronghold levels were the ones where you had to siege somebody.
Seriously gay shit.

Here is a clue, faggot: it's Elric that's a generic bitchboy edgelord, not everyone being some sort of copy or homage or whatever. Stop fellating to a terrible YA books from the era your parents were teens.

But anon, this is antagonist thread.
>>
>>1057905
It depends on what you're playing against, but macemen have good speed and damage, and they're not nearly as expensive as knights. They were my favorite melee unit, and not just for the coolness factor. Sure swordsmen are sturdier, but all units turn into mush against a line of catapults.
>>
>>1058513
Even a few crossbowmen can ruin them, never mind ballista.
Macemen are top tier for guys like the Caliph (post having spearmen trigger his pitch fields), the Sultan, or the weaker Europe lords, though.

For larger sieges, I usually use them as a supplementary force: Sending them in ahead of the swordsmen or pikemen, most likely behind the knights.
>>
>>1058918
Obviously they're not for manually bashing down walls of heavily defended castles, but when moving towards something defended purely by crossbows, due to their faster speed they'll take nearly the same amount of damage crossing a distance as an equally sized force of swordsmen would, in spite of being much cheaper in terms of gold and iron, and their dps is much higher than pikemens. In a field battle you're also able to charge down retreating crossbowmen and keep archers from kiting, and the extra maneuverability means you have the initiative. If an enemy using slower units attempts to charge you, you can retreat with your ranged units, circle his melee units, and smash his ranged units and siege equipment. In order to protect against a quick charge your opponent would have to keep his melee units closer to his ranged units than you do, and the more compact your units are, the higher a chance a catapult shot will squish something.
>>
>>1059392
>Crossbowmen in the field in numbers small enough to actually be rushed down by macemen
I don't risk them on the ground. I usually just spam like 100 archers and have them pick off wall defenders bit by bit.
>>
>>1057913
I was a high larper as kid with this tune.
When the drop landed at 7:22 I sent all mounted knights at same times through the woods and expected to say CHAAAAAAAAARGE!!! otherwise I sperged as disappointed take.

>>1062213
When I was a kid I loved the Pikemen. They felt like proper lads who worked for the cause.

ITT: Proof that there really aren't any well written villains in RTS games.

The only well written RTS story is Homeworld & the stand alone expansion(?) but that had no single villain.

This is not an antagonist, it's a very rare case of PC's boss done good and being engaging.
>>
>>1057996
Again, not an antagonist. CABAL is a plot device and, well, a literal device.
>>
>>1065638
He was an Undivided champion, not monogod. Look at his model in Retribution, it's a scaled up version of the generic old metal DP that also appeared in DoW1. GW have recently teased a resculpt of it in plastic, I hope the kit will include a psychic hood head.
>>
>>1065686
He only talks about Khorne, Blood and Skulls though even in the final mission, and his whole plan is sacrifice to Khorne. He's clearly going for the Red guys favor.

Warcraft was impressive when I was 13. StarCraft was already cringe at 13. C&C is hilariously bad writing and the devs would agree with that. Stronghold again the devs would agree they just made low effort caricatures. Dawn of War has the best characters of the lot and the devs would still say they made the story and characters campy on purpose to fit in with the lore. You lost.
>>
>>1065703
And before that he worked with stinkies. Oh, and his forces have noise marines, something unthinkable for a khornate champion. Kyras is Undivided, arguing with that is retarded and the mark of a secondary.
>>
>>1065670
Depends on the campaign you choose
>>
>>1065764
>Stronghold again the devs would agree they just made low effort caricatures.
The fact that the characters are clearly defined and well exaggerated archetypes rather than morally grey nuanced and neutrally portrayed stale bread is precisely what makes them so great. The pig is up there with the best antagonists not just in RTS but in games as a whole.

He was dedicated to Nurgle ever since he was corrupted by Ulkair. All his scheming was done while leaning towards Nurgle. Even in Retribution intro Gabriel still believes he is Nurglite. But after you btfo the Great Unlcean One in Chaos Rising he gets possessed by Khorne Deamon Gabriel released at the end of Dawn Of War 1. Which is what Gabriel talks about in Exterminatus speech in Retribution. Kyras isn't even fully himself in Retribution, it's basically Fulgrim situation.

Sindri is undivided as well. The only weird thing is in Winter Assault with World Eaters.

Globbie zogbots are the evil campaign, in TS Solomon and McNeil are the primary antagonists and muties are secondary bad guys.
>>
>>1066482
WA was written by retards like SS, it has a lot of stuff that's pulled right out of the ass like a general commanding a regiment, IG having lightning claws and grey knight style wrist guns, and the like. DoW2 was much better with adherence to fluff, with a couple exceptions like guardsmen for some reason doing the job of PDF and enforcers, or predator tanks being everywhere on all maps and also the only tanks the orks get. It's like a regiment or division's worth of them. Shit gets better in CR with planetary forces briefly appearing before turning into hordes of cultist chaff.
>>
>>1066841
Depends on who you ask
>>
>>1066907
It doesn't depend, globs have always been a simple one-dimensional enemy.
>>
>>1067330
Depends on the writer
>>
>>1067514
>TD: literally zogbots, pure evil
>TS: military junta that took over the world, has an evil mastermind general, prison camps and offbrand AT-ATs
>TW: led by a corrupt, cowardly war criminal who wasn't killed off only because he isn't competent enough to cause too much evil
>TT: crazy fanatics, the only good globs side with Kane
It's always the same, no matter who wrote the plot. They were always bad guys.
>>
>>1067892
And what of Renegade?
>>
>>1067892
Depends on the media you consume
>>
>>1068209
Exactly the same, havoc is a war criminal who shot civilian personnel multiple times. We only hear accusations against Nod from him and his D6 goons, but see none of that on their part.
>>
>>1057996
Anton Slavik was a chad and I'm disappointed we never saw more of him.
>>
>>1068772
Marcion was a straight upgrade, the real shame is that he didn't play a larger part. We could have gotten a sci-fi paladin campaign centred around him if not for EA.
>>
>>1065680
What are you babbling about anon... Cabal was the main antagonist of Tiberian Sun Firestorm.
>>
>>1070202
He wasn't, it's a tale about people breaking tech with improper use and having to clean up.
