Tales thread. Discuss the Arise DLC nobody asked for and other games in the series.
>>
>>3266087
Haven't played it yet but I heard the story was awful. Sounds like the only consolation is that the hero and heroine actually get together at the end. Can't believe how rare that is these days, and yet here we are.
>>
>>3266091
Is it?
I feel like half of tales games end with the clear love interest
>>
>>3266093
Well let's look at the JRPGs of the last ten years:
FF15 the hero and heroine die
FF16 sex outside of marriage, hero is absent in the end
World of Final Fantasy: protagonist dies, comes back in the postgame but no romance.
Trails: every protagonist is shipteased but after 13 games and 1,200+ hours, only two side characters have gotten married.
Tokyo Xanadu: no romance
Ys 8, 9, and 10: no romance
Atelier: yuri baiting
Monochrome Mobius: shipteasing that never solidifies.
Utawarerumono Mask of Deception: Oshtor dies a single man
Utawarerumono Mask of Truth: sex outside of marriage then protagonist abandons her
Tales of Zestiria: the heroines die of old age long before the protagonist returns.
Tales of Berseria: protagonist dies
Xenoblade X: no romance
Xenoblade 2: harem with two girls in the end, babies in sequel
Xenoblade 3: yes
Shin Sakura Wars: you can ship the protagonist with the girl of your choice but no marriage
Yakuza: Kiryu is middle aged and alone.
>>
>>3266087
I'm about to finish Tales of Berseria, finally after some long time, and whil I enjoyed this ride, I will probably never want to touch any other game in this series.
You can scream at me how Berseria is shit and actually this one title is so much better. But I bet it shares the same problems.
Well, maybe I give another title a try at some point, after some years have passed. Still really enjoyed it

>I feel like half of tales games end with the clear love interest

Most of the time you might get the hero saying to the heroine "Let's go on another adventure" and if you're lucky they get together between games. This is the first one in a while where they not only seal the deal and kiss but you practically had to hose them down during the actual later half of the game. They were flirting constantly.
>>
>>3266127
>World of Final Fantasy:
Anon, they are brothers.
>Tokyo Xanadu
MC had 3 romantic interest(idol, mysterious girl, the childhood girl) is just the other girls get others romantic intersest so you can't romance them
Also, Trials of mana remake ending, Angela saif she is interested on Duran in a special cutscene
>>
>>3266127
I mean like.... It's sorta a stretch to label Olivert as a side character

>>3266130
Berseria is the (second) least enjoyable game in the franchise to play imo, and I doubt you're going to touch Tempest as a second title. It is incredibly tedious in almost every aspect of gameplay, and while the characters are nice and anime and fun(!) they don't make up for what is at the end of the day an unenjoyable game. Combat is tedious, traversal is tedious, skits are tedious, items and equipment are tedious, menus are tedious, side content is tedious, etc.
And the music is sub par for the series too
>>
>>3266087
Any news about a ToPX translation?

Tempest is a great portables tales game. Don't know why it gets shit on.
>>
>>3266087

Arise was alright but didn´t need this. The plot closes well enough as it is. Characters were a bit on the weak side though. Abyss was far more interesting for example and i´ve heard Berseria is even better. Haven´t played that one yet because i didn´t really like Zestiria.
>>
>>3267808
Berseria is only slightly better than Zestiria and only because of coomers. It's not a classic tales game in any sense. Phantasia Eternia symphonia abyss. Those are the ones that are held in high regard
>>
>>3267991
I dislike Abyss. It's one of my goto examples of 'everyone acts like a retard except a couple people, including characters who could prevent the mess before it escalates'.
>>
>>3266087
I like the cast and was happy to have more time with them, especially with the serious baggage of the base game dealt with so they get to be dumb and have fun together
the DLC is overpriced and the main story of it falls flat
>>

>>
>>3267992
>>3267808
I will never understand what people like so much about Abyss. The plot FUNDAMENTALLY does not work.
>>
>>3267789
The battle system is terrible.
>AI party members can only use the four artes you have assigned to them in the menu
>You can't change those artes mid-battle OR even command them to use the artes they have equipped
>You have to chain artes in order from tier 1 -> 2 -> 3, 2 or 3 can't be used on their own, which means you have basically zero combo freedom, you make one combo and stick with it
>Movement and everything about the battle system is just slow and clunky in general
The world map is a slog of long, empty, one-road corridor-like areas with nothing but a shitload of random encounters.
The story and characters are both invalidated by the game being way shorter than it should have been, what we wind up with is basically chapter one of a larger story that just ends with a tacked-on final boss and characters that you can't possibly give a shit about.

I don't see what you could possibly like about it, and giving it brownie points for being a handheld game doesn't make sense either because Tales has a lot of great handheld games.
>>
>>3268210
How doesn't it work?
>>
>>3266130
I've played a bunch of em, and honestly Symphonia is still the only one really worth a damn all these years later. The way the plot is split into really well-defined chunks worked well. Every other Tales game just feels so windy and lost to me by comparison.
>>

That's how I would describe Symphonia too. I tried replaying about a year ago, but my memory seems fragmented, but I blame the game. The beginning is fine, until the girl goes retarded, and then I remember a streak of disjointed tasks. Later when the girl is cured, the whole ordeal is forgotten and you're on a boat.

No, you are dead on. Symphonia's middle act has a lot of things going on, but it cycles through those plots in an almost revolving door fashion, so it feels like it takes forever for the story to advance because something else is getting in your way. On top of a game-wide bad habit of simply procrastinating getting to the next big plot point whenever it can, which gets even worse in the last third when you just want to throw down with Cruxis already.

But then to my knowledge this is a reoccurring thing in at least the Team Symphonia-developed games.

I wanted to play Beyond the Dawn but having to redo everyone's setup from scratch and re-learn all the same exact skills/artes is really fucking annoying.

Luke's entire character and the way the party dumps on him for trusting Van, who was like a father to him, over themselves, who were assholes to him. He was used by someone he trusted to do something he didn't know was possible and it's fault for wanting to believe in the person who never gave him cause for distrust. Oh and said father figure can mind control him. And Van's whole plot was stupid as hell too. And everything involving Arietta.

Arise was failure in the eyes of the fandom as proven by the mountains of unsold Rinwell figurines. Tales needs to go back to fujopandering, platonic relationships, LMBS, and bittersweet endings for it to stay relevant again.

Glad to hear my memory isn't complete shit. Most of it is walking in the bland overworld and random battles, not to mention the battle system isn't very engaging.

Don't mean to be too harsh on it. It was good back when it was released, and there wasn't a lot of choice on Gamecube. Nowadays I don't have the time for a meandering game like Symphonia.

>>
>>3266130
Berseria is actually the only good modern Tales game, so bummer.
>>
>>3269994
Emulate them
>>
>>3267991
Berseria was considered good because it was at least, to some extent, a return to form for the franchise. It had lost so much of it's identity over the Xillias and Zestiria that it had become almost unrecognizable. (More so in Zestiria, mind. Xillia was just the beginning of it). We'd just about dropped skits (Limiting them to save points lol), titles and costumes were a thing of the past, cooking was gone, skill systems were over-complicated, etc. So many of the mechanics and honestly just the general "feel" of the series that the fans did like were basically gone at this point.

Berseria then came out and bought so much of it back, while having a cast and story that felt more like a traditional Tales story than anything from the last few years. Yeah the battle system was kinda eh but no one's actually gonna argue the battle system is why they think Symphonia is great either. It was a true return to form for the series and a really hopeful step in the right direction. Of course, Arise came immediately after and destroyed that entirely, but thems the breaks I guess.
>>
>>3268594
>>3268598
They got mad at him because he cried like a bitch about not being his fault after being annoying about being the chosen one.
Also , he yelled at the only one outsise Ion that got pity at him (the mascot) because he was above him and much better.
And in the end both Guy and Tear ended up forgiving him too quickly
>>
>>3266130
Berseria has a completely different combat and gear system from other games, both to its own detriment. Usually Tales games have a form of linear motion battle system with roots in fighting games. And the gear system usually isn't a clusterfuck of different ideas.
>>
>>3270253
I barely touched Zestiria and only played Berseria recently, but it really doesn't feel that much like a Tales game either. It made me miss the old battle system and gear systems. The plot following a supposedly evil group of characters was also rather half-baked and barely working. Most of Artorius characterisation is Velvet talking about him. Then you fuck around for half the game to collect therions unhindered by the Abbey. And when the two siblings finally get to confront you again, you get a short exposition about them before they meet their "tragic" death which just comes off as moronic.
>>
>>3268422
>>3268538
My impression is the opposite. After Arise and Berseria, I really appreciate how complex Symphonia's story is
>Cruxis building a whole ass system of desians and the church of Martel to have the world function as it does
>Yuan leading his own organisation in opposition to that
>Kratos persuing his goals by himself
>Rodyle just doing his own thing
>Pope of Tethe'alla scheming on his own
>Mizuho pledging allegiance to the group
It actually has different factions that act against each other and have some history with each other. Meanwhile the five lords in Arise are completely disconnected from each other and just serve as villain of the week. The main antagonist is just a lavos rip-off and the closest character to an actual sentient human antagonist is just clinically insane. It's fucking laughable.
>>
>>3270397
And the only other faction that is not the aliens or you was a rebellion of retards that was just allowed to happen in the end
>>
>>3270253
>Berseria was considered good because it was at least, to some extent, a return to form for the franchise
No it wasn't. Not in the slightest. It just doubled back on that fusion garbage but it was every bit as modern crap and filled with modern game bullshit as anything else.
>>
>>3270253
If Berseria was your "right direction" I don't think this is the franchise for you.
>>
I tried playing Berseria as my first Tales because it was on sale a while back for super cheap

It just felt empty and lifeless and I dropped it a couple hours in. Everything from the style to the music to the menus were just cheapo.
>>
>>3270397
I didn't get invested in the story enough to think of them as anything else but irrelevant excuses for padding out the game. You keep stumbling upon new paper thin bad guys who laugh like they're evil, Lloyd is confused about it, then you have a bossfight. Going through the motions, because there's not much to do or think about it, really. Basically, they act as minor distractions.
>>
>>3270253
Graces did the safe/discovery points skits first and Zestiria had titles.
Also, zestiria skill system>berseria skill system.
>>
>>3270507
Sounds like you went into the game judging other characters before you even really met them. Of the ones I've mentioned, only the pope and Rodyle are atually cheap. But even Rodyle has his own agenda that goes against that of cruxis and is involved with several parts of the plot. Kratos and Yuan are both central to the plot who turn out to be allies rather than enemies. Symphonia has a few paper thin bad guys to pad things out, but also several more complex characters. The point is that Arise doesn't even have that. It's paper thin through and throughout.
>>
>>3270530
>Sounds like you went into the game judging other characters before you even really met them
I don't know what that means.

Arise puts focus on the relationship of the main pairing, and instead of baddies, the focus is more on the different types of tyranny and it's effects on people. It's less about Ganabelt, and more about how the people are oppressed, and how they're turned on each other, the mistrust among them etc., while the other realms explore different themes. I believe it did a fine job, got the points across, while leaving space for other stuff. It also means, if you don't care for the cast, that is now an empty space that's not filled with other stuff. I was interested in cast and the themes of the game, so I felt it had something interesting going on at all times.
>>
>>3270546
I thought we were talking about Symphonia, not Arise.

I also wouldn't call say the themes were explored that well in Arise. The surveillance in the second region for example is a bit of a nuisance before Zephyr's execution. You only hear a bit about how life is in that city, but after the execution scene, the whole theme is already tossed out of the window as Ganabelt opens the doors to you. The game is just really scared to keep the player in one spot for too long to really explore any of the themes.
>>
>>3270548
Yeah I was talking about Symphonia.

I felt Arise was efficient with the themes. Something different in every realm, gets you thinking about relevant stuff in real world history and how it affects people, but I don't think there's really more do with them beyond that, so I'm pleased the game didn't keep dwelling on them too much. There's a limited amount of shits I can afford to give about fictional people in video games, after all. The artifact skits and erasure of history. People see aliens, but even that can bring to mind stuff from history. Maybe the game just happened to hit my personal interests.
>>
>>3270546
the drawn-out, repetitive and poorly executed relationships? or the many contrived scenarios that act closer to a soap opera?

The combat didn't click with me either, but I'm not well-versed on this franchise. Is it supposed to be good in this game?
>>
>>3270948
>Is it supposed to be good in this game?
That's kind of a loaded question. The thing you have to know about Arise is that it's the first game under a producer who is brand new to the series, and the mission statement for its development was to "revolutionize and modernize" the series. So a lot of series conventions have been altered or outright removed, and the combat is no exception. The game definitely has its fans, but the sentiment among SERIES fans is generally negative, and that sentiment has kind of outlasted the initial praise that the game got. The fact that the new DLC only has 200 reviews to the original game's 23k is testament to that.

how is it possible for someone to have less than a 50 iq and still post on 4chan. did ai help you generate this post?

Luke was given plenty of reason to not trust Van before the rug was ultimately pulled from under him. Over and over he was told not to, he was given explict reasons for why he shouldnt, but he decided to be a coward and bury his head in the sand instead of thinking for himself. He was a spoiled brat, quite literally, too afraid to be independent in his actions or his thoughts. Thats why he goes on and on and on after the incident about how its not his fault, and why the pivotal moment of his character progression is him finally learning to take responsibility for his own life, actions, and beliefs.

This was like very basic gradeschool level plot and character progression. The fact that anyone could think that Luke was in the right for trusting Van just because some other people were a little mean to him is just beyond fucking retarded. Fuck you for making me turn off my VPN just to post this. Stop ruining jrpgs by failing to understand any amount of subtly to the point where EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE EXPLAINED IN EXPLICIT DETAIL or you autistic faggots wont understand it.

>Over and over he was told not to, he was given explict reasons for why he shouldnt, but he decided to be a coward and bury his head in the sand instead of thinking for himself.

By people he had even less reason to trust than Van. Why should he listen to anything Jade has to say? There wasn't any other character in that game to that point t hat wasn't also having some shifty secret of their own. The problem with this logic is that "Thinking for himself" actually translated to "Listen to us."

> Thats why he goes on and on and on after the incident about how its not his fault,
There are two things here though.
1. He had literally ZERO time to actually process and reflect on the events after he woke up. You think anyone is just going to go MY BAD the second they're told they're responsible for an event so catastrophic it's beyond human understanding? No. They wouldn't.

2. And this important. IT'S NOT ACTUALLY HIS FAULT!! There is no perversion of reality that you can present that actually makes this his fault. He doesn't understand his powers because he was held in the dark. He doesn't understand what the sephiroth and the qlopth even were because EVERYONE was kept in the dark. Van basically put a 7 year old in front of the keys to the nuke, told him to press the button without explaining anything else and then the game wants us to think it's his fault. And oh yeah. VAN CAN MIND CONTROL HIM!

>This was like very basic gradeschool level plot and character progression. The fact that anyone could think that Luke was in the right for trusting Van just because some other people were a little mean to him is just beyond fucking retarded.

Just because the player can see Van is up to no good doesn't mean Luke does. Meta knowledge does not work in crafting a narrative. The game can explain whatever it wants. That doesn't make it true. That doesn't make it work. The game SAYS one thing but SHOWS us the exact opposite. The plot does not work.

Do you like Arise and want to see more of the cast? Play it. Do you not care for Arise or its cast? Avoid it. It's not going to move your needle from one side to the other.
Also keep in mind that you start with a blank slate, which means you have to relearn all your artes that require specific masteries, grind your way through the skill panel again, and do accessory crafting again.

Are you autistic? He might not have trusted the others initially but all of the characters accompanied him all the way to the end, even the fucking skits showed everyone warming up to everyone else over time, especially Luke as the MC as he slowly learns to drop his pampered prince act. Meanwhile Van is nowhere to be seen and the other characters clearly recognized Luke's obsession with getting validation from him.
>only the players know that Van did it
This is the reason I know you're just autistic. If no one else knows it's actually Van then why wouldn't the others blame Luke? After all he's the one who they saw doing the deed. Your argument falls apart on its own and you don't understand nuance, and I don't even think Abyss is anywhere close as being the best Tales game or whatever. It's simply a (You) problem.

I have played Tales of Vesperia over 10 years ago. My memory is very blurry of course, I do not remember much, but to this day I remember certain scenes that really stood out from other JRPGs I played, for example the protagonist, against all cliches, just murdering a corrupt politician in the middle of the night, because he otherwise would've gotten away with something bad he did, as an act of vigilante justice. That really left an impact. Also of course, all the cute character interactions and also the fantastic town themes (On The Other Side Of The Mirage really enhanced the dreamy, melancholic mood, it was perfect).
Then about two years ago I played Tales of Berseria and while it dragged out in some places, it probably had one of, if not the, best cast ever. I could write paragraphs about each ones personality, but I don't want to shit up this thread desu, let's just say I absolutely loved them, except the kid.
So the Tales series is 2/2 on great games for me. And I have been looking for a new game to play and thought "Hey, let's check out Arise!". But from what I can tell here, you guys aren't too happy about it. I don't need a perfect 10/10 or anything, just a good solid JRPG that keeps me entertained enough to finish it, cool characters, engaging story, fun gameplay. Will I get that with Arise? I watched a review and the dude said
>OMG, I absolutely LOVE how political this game is! It really shows how racism... (bla bla bla shut the fuck up)
Is that true? To be honest bros, I can't hear this anymore. Fucking -everything- needs to be about racism and politics nowadays, in real life and in fiction, and I can't stand this shit anymore. Is that really a central point in the story or does it just happen on the side?
Also, I am claiming this girl as my wife.

Anon, this is not USA college level black politics.
It's literally a different race enslaving humanity and using them as cattle.
And of course, because slavery IS kind of a bad thing, you fight against this or see instances where people try to "solve' it or whatever. Not trying to say it's done well or whatever, but this is japan creating excuse plots, not whatever the fuck you imagine
>>
>>3277820
>Anon, this is not USA college level black politics.
Now that you mention it, I have to admit, I did associate the whole politics&racism topic with the current western media, since this is what we are bombarded with nonstop.
But it can most definitely be done in a way that is not insufferable and rather engaging. Nothing from recent memory comes to mind, but in Chrono Trigger there was a village of monsters that treated you with animosity and sold you goods at outrageous prices because you play a human. And that was a good scene, you know.
>It's literally a different race enslaving humanity and using them as cattle. And of course, because slavery IS kind of a bad thing, you fight against this or see instances where people try to "solve' it or whatever.
Alright, I get it. Thank you for the quick reply, I admit, this was all on me, I just assumed wrongly.
>>
>>3277813
Please avoid it at all costs and play another Tales instead (except for Zestiria which is just as bad).
The characters are pretty bland and many skits are way too serious instead of being about goofy interactions.
It is about racism, but so are a bunch of other Tales games. The topic in itself isn't too bad and I would argue some games handle it pretty well (Symphonia for example), but Arise just take a big dump on it by being incredibly superficial. The whole thing really just boils down to "racism bad" instead of any nuanced view on it, which is especially hilarious considering the game takes place after 300 years of oppression.

Twenty hours is pretty damn fast to get to Nordipolica. Have you been ignoring all the side content and just running through the main story? And like, it's just one story beat - just like a lot of places you do your thing in the town when you arrive and then you go on to the next place. I don't remember there being that much nonsense there, it's mostly just that you get to do a couple fights
>the combat was unfun from the get go
Vesperia combat starts ok and then incrementally gets better and better as you go through the game, getting new mechanics and skills. Some people hate that progression (a lot get filtered by Yuri's third attack having lag for some fucking reason), but speaking honestly it's sorta impressive to me that all nine characters play very differently from each other and - though it takes a bit of time for some of them Karol - all of them are genuinely quite enjoyable to play as.

What's your problem with the combat / what difficulty are you playing on, and have you tried out other characters aside from Yuri?

To be frank, Berseria's combat (really all of its mechanics) are a lot worse. The soul system makes every fight extremely swing-y, the absolute focus on hitting elemental/type weaknesses makes combos very repetitive and annoying within each area, the sequential artes chaining is clunky and restrictive, and stuff like Velvet/Magilou/Eizen's Soul Breaks or character swapping (especially with mystic arte chains) just destroy fighting altogether. Vesperia's system is a lot more expressive and fluid in comparison - at all times you have the options to perform any of your directional attacks as well as 16 artes instead of being locked into the sequences. Also you can fucking jump. That brings a massive boost just by itself. Instead of Soul Break's "press the button and win" function, Oversoul instead gives you the opportunity to just play your character even more fluidly, and that feels so much better.

but jumps are the worst parts of vesperia combat! Your char becomes unresponsive after landing after jump and jump attacks are wonky
Also up+special skill combination works once ina a blue moon for me
>>
>>3280051
If you play on semi-auto you don't jump by simply pressing up but need to press shield+up. Of course it also takes away some of the other freedom.

Up+special wasn't too much of a problem for me, but I also played a ton of Smash. During a combo you can simply buffer it and it works. Outside of it, it takes a bit practice I guess.

>>
>>3280051
>but jumps are the worst parts of vesperia combat! Your char becomes unresponsive after landing after jump and jump attacks are wonky
It opens up so much. Launching and juggling enemies is immensely satisfying to do. And while a lot of that can be done on the ground, every character in the game can take advantage of jumping to carry combos forward and - equally useful - reposition/dodge around enemies. A couple characters benefit more from aerial combat, but Judith in particular just could not exist without it. Judith on the ground is a slug, Judith in the air can be immensely mobile and fun - even without massive practice to do some of the crazier combos you can see.

>Also up+special skill combination works once ina a blue moon for me
I can't really say this was a problem for me.
I play keyboard and mouse as well, so as >>3280055 is saying, if you're using a controller and have the option to tilt instead of just hard pressing it's probably even easier. Semi-auto does exist if you need it as a crutch.
Just don't hold down the up button, you gotta tap it and time your arte with it.

Look, at the end of the day, even though not all of them are going to be amazing, pretty much every Tales game is going to be a decent RPG.

Zestiria's an okay game. I think it got held back a bit by some design choices that sounded like better ideas than they were (Armatization being one) and definitely by being a rushed game, but it's still probably worth some time. Most of the characters are pretty likable, the music is good, and there are parts of its combat that I do like - Sidestepping and back-dashing in Zestiria feels fantastic. And a lot of the more annoying or tedious features can be largely ignored on a first play-through (Normins and the Lord of the Land systems for example). Unfortunately the overarching plot is pretty weak, but like, unless that's a deal-breaker for you I'd say give it a go.

It's 5 bucks on steam right now if you weren't going to pirate it, so like... it's definitely worth more than that price.

A big part of it is that most of those enemies are really meant to flesh out your new party members. Yes, Kuchinawa, the Pope, Rodyle, et all add to the collective shock that your team has stepped outside the lines and suddenly everything is trying to kill them. You need characters to spur that act change, you don't need to be gunning for Kratos and Yuan just yet. But while their motivations remain if you don't care about Sheena, Zelos, Presea, or Regal, a lot of that mid-villain interest is hoping that you will.

>>3283005
>>3283029 is about right. Good icing, not a great video game. Good enough for the $5 price point. Battles are either very light-feeling hits with incorrect damage numbers (damage ranges?) or pummeling your opponent in place with the fused character attacks, which feel amazing but feel mandatory with many bosses. I played it in to big bursts and have had no desire to revisit it since.

I can't read Japanese yet. Sounds like PSX is the play. Thank you, anon. Grabbing the ISO and ENG patch now.
>I have actually seen more than one person prefer the SNES
Same, but I don't typically trust what I read in youtube comments.
>>
I feel bad since GBA Phantasia is how I started the series, then I played Symphonia on the cube and Eternia on the PSP
>>
I wish we got something as kino as Rowen sidequests
>>
>>3290154
Nah you’re fine.
I’ll be real though, I started with symphonia (like many people) and for a long time that was the only one that I’d played. I eventually tried the gba phantasia (via emulator) but it was honestly shit enough that I dropped it wholesale and never went back.
>>
>>3290445
I started with Symphonia, and never played any other because they look like shit. I gave Arise a chance and it's better than Symphonia.
>>
>>3290450
Did you actually play through it? If so, which part was better aside from the visuals?
>>
Are tales of arise outfit dlcs worth it?
Reviews are saying they add skill trees and that seems big
>>
>>3291051
Are they worth getting? Yes. Is showing monetary support for that bullshit worth it? No. Use creamapi to activate them.

Also, they should rename Tales of Arise to Tales of Kamige. Fuck I love this game (so far).

With Symphonia and Vesperia , they could close the Team Symphonia trilogy before releasing the team destiny tetralogy or Xillia 1+2

It’s on the 3ds. You got it

Everything in Arise was better than Symphonia. Combat being better already means 80% of the game is better.

Judith is barely functional on a fresh run because she doesn't have most of her skills, none of her artes would have the 200+ uses needed to be at max potential and even when you do have her skills, she's SP gated.
Yuri, Flynn, Rita and probably Patty are the most intuitive characters to use on your first run.

How is chronicles symphonia on emulator?
It's listed as ingame but last update was 2020, I'd prefer that edition to gamecube edition

Tales of Classic Collection when???
>>
>>3296186
The PC version is mostly fixed at this point. Puzzle blocks have slightly janky grab ranges and the characters are rendered in a strange soft fashion found in no other version that you have to turn on the in-game AA to mitigate. More than anything it is the memory of how poorly the port was treated, visibly rushed and broken in places, taking over a year to fix, and poorly reverse-engineering parts of Kaldaein's fan patch to do it.

Recently finished Abyss, what would be the best Tales game to try next? Preferably one that doesn't have such a ridiculous amount of parts where you just hop between a bunch of places you already went with no gameplay happening, easily the worst part of Abyss. Also preferably shorter as I reckon Abyss was probably 10 hours longer than it needed to be.
>>
>>3296879
Abyss is easily the worst offender when it comes to backtracking. It probably wouldn't even that bad if Luke's personal physician wouldn't hide behind half a dozen loading screens. The huge cathedral is also bad, but you barely notice since you never really have to explore it and get led through it.

You can try Symphonia or Vesperia. Symphonia also has a nice story, but the combat doesn't have free run which makes it feel a bit aged. It also only offers the most basic combos with a few skills at best per character.
Vesperia has the best combat, especially later on, but the story doesn't really lead to a grand ending, so it's kinda a letdown. Events still flow nicely into each other and it has some good characters.
>>
>>3296886
I've tried both of those for a short amount of time, not interested in playing more of Symphonia's combat, how long does Vesperia's combat take to get good?
>>
>>3296879
Short tales game? Try Tempest its a 10 hour shit show by the team that made Sonic 4.

fr Innocense R and Hearts R are the only decent games under 40 hours.
>>
>>3296886
Vesperia is not that much better in terms of backtracking than Abyss tho. And it has the same stupid sidequest structure of "at a very specific timeframe, within a very small time window, you have to backtrack 5 locations and talk to some random bloke to get an arte or something useless"
>>
>>3297243
No way- I’m calling bullshit, Abyss is a dozen times worse about this.
I’m not saying there isn’t any backtracking in Vesperia, especially if you want to 100% all the little side-quests (looking at Brionic) in the definite edition, but with Abyss it’s almost a constant and it’s made so much more tedious by how the maps are laid out.
For the majority of the game, every time you want to go somewhere in Abyss you have to go - out of the place you’re in - onto the world map - into a port city - onto your ship (which moves really slowly and many of the more convenient paths are blocked off by invisible barriers that you can’t get around unless you do a secret option side quest right at the end of the game) - into another port city - back onto the world map - and then finally enter the place you want to be in.
But that’s not the end of it, because once you’re inside a city, the locations that you have to go to over and over again (Ion’s room in the cathedral, Luke’s house, either capital’s throne room, the Elder’s hall in Tear’s town, the Arab guy’s house, the Jade’s sister’s house, any of the numerous places in the lab, etc) are all behind like a dozen fucking screen transition or super long halls that take a full fucking minute (both ways) to walk down.
Vesperia (and Symphonia for the matter) is sooooo much fucking better about this it’s fucking insane. All their maps are much much more accessible, and even better it often only requires you to go in a little bit into the city for stuff to happen (Dahngrest for example- 90% of stuff just makes you go to the town square, 1 screen in from the world map). And Ba’ul is so much more fucking convenient it’s insane. He moves faster, steers better, doesn’t require you to remember where you landed him and walk back to it, and is a million times less finicky about landing and no-fly-zones (all things symphonia did better too).
>>
>>3297238
Phantasia, Destiny DC, Eternia, and Destiny 2 are all under 40 hours and great games too.
>>
>>3297459
*only decent 3D games under 40 hours. Other options being ToS2 or Tempest.
The OG games are good but probably not the best to play after abyss unless you enjoy super-retro jrpgs.
