ITT: Popular 'cult classic' RPGs that for some reason you just could never get into and why. It's probably impossible given that this is /vrpg/, but try not to shitfling either at the games, or at people posting about them.

For my it's VTM: Bloodlines. The combat implementation in it is just unfun, and I had the misfortune of playing VTM: Night Road a year before (which did writing/dialogue/choice better as you would expect from a semi CYOA) so the plot beats and dialogue didn't grab me like they would have someone in 2004. The voice acting was mostly good though.
>>
Ultima Underworld - couldn't stomach the graphics, looking at it was literally giving me kinetosis. Oddly enough I had no problem with similarly old "free roaming" games like Betrayal at Krondor or TES Arena.
>>

Wasteland. Just too old, and I grew up playing early 90s games
>t. millenial boomer
>>
>>3209288
Wasteland 1 is definitely archaic.
>>
I've tried to get through Xenogears twice but the mech segments are just fucking awful and unfun.
>>
Could never get into Baldurs Gate.
I just can't stand the micromanaging party based combat.

Loved Planescape Torment though.
>>
>>3209165
Fallout 1 & 2. I just dont get the appeal. I dont mind old CRPGs either I played through torment and bg1 and loved them
>>
>>3209165
Xenogears and Planescape: Torment. The combat in both is just plain awful.
>>
>>3209165
Infinity engine games. I just hate DnD, party based RTWP combat always devolves into the uncontrollable mess unless the game is super slow or the party is tremendously overleveled, and BG seems to have cringiest writing, judging by the first hour or so.

Playing through all Sagas and first Xenoblade made me kinda appreciate Gears. Just don't think of it as a game but a multimedia project. At the end of the day, yes, the gameplay is somewhat atrocious
>>
>>3209165
I get an hour or two into Xenosaga and quit every time.
>>
FF7
I had a few friends with 300+ hour saves
"Just get to the open world it's amazing"
I've played through that 7 hour tutorial like 3 times, get to midgard, and quit every time.

Same thing with FF9. I recently started playing the PC version and the AI graphics mods have made it enjoyable. I might try modded 7 one last time.
>>
>>3209165
Ultima 7, every cell in my body down to the hairs on my cheeks tells me to stop playing after halfass exploring the first town
>>
Ultima 7 is the only game I've dropped primarily due to the graphics rather than a gameplay issue. Something about the weird perspective it uses repulses me.
>>
Either of the Pathfinder games, I legitimately can't understand what people see in them.

I don't like baldurs gate 1 and 2 because the companions aren't even half as interesting as people pretend (especially in 1 wow), your party is alignment restricted, and the story is pretty drab compared to planescape and iwd2

Who gets the throne of power? Yawn. Yea definitely best rpg ever *eyeroll*

This

Live A Live
the combat just never clicked with me, ATB just feels like theres no rhyme or reason to who goes when
>>
>>3209165
Koudelka

I didn’t mind the slow combat, but I found the cast grouchy and unlikeable. And I don’t think an FF2/SaGa style weapon skill system works well with a survival horror weapon durability system.
>>
>>3209165
fallout 1 - 2.
i tried to, but the AP system just annoyed me to no end. turn based shit in general kills the fun for me. it makes every encounter a chore
>>
>>3209165
i tried Xenosaga three times but i always end up dropping it after Ziggy and Momo join the main cast
now when i think about going through the early part i feel only dread
>>
>>3210327
People don't pretend bg1 companions are super interesting. There are a lot of them and most of them aren't too retarded and obnoxious.
>>
>>3210327
everything you said about bg applies to iwd2 twice as hard

the story doesnt exist, and what does exist is cringe city
your party are a much of mutes that you create yourself and have no personality or flavor whatsoever

iwd2 is one of the worst rpg of all time, and a buggy mess on top of it
>>
>>3209165
Arcanum, I wanted to like it but everything about the gameplay felt so shitty and the opening story wasn't enough to motivate me to continue.
>>3210387
It is a hard turn order, yet it is also atb. It is a very confusing and nonsensical design choice.
>>3210436
Same but for different reasons, fallout just was boring as hell to me. I did a few quests and got pretty far but could never bring myself to finish.
>>
>>3211591
>Arcanum
The worst thing about Arcanum is that it feels like it's not even a "gem in the rough" situation. It's so unfinished and unpolished that it's more like the theoretical idea of a game, even the famed dialogue suffers from this when you actually play it and it turns out to be mostly empty and without quality.
>>
>>3209165
Baulders Gate, Arcanum, and Planescape.
>>
>>3209165
The entire Dragon Quest series. It has some of the worst turn based combat out of any RPG I've experienced and it's narratively unappealing.
>>
>>3209165
Couldn't stand Jagged Alliance 2 Wildfire, dropped at the begining.
Got bored with Arcanum, dropped somewhere in the middle of the game.
Both happened when I was underage though.
>>
>>3209165
Mother 3 sorta sucks ass
>>
>>3209165
Earthbound. I like Mother 1 and 3 but don't really care for 2. The whole aesthetic/artstyle just doesn't do it for me.
>>
>>3209165
I will never for the life of me understand what it is people see in Dragon's Dogma. Everyone's a non-character and combat just feels so spammy and boring
>>
>>3209165
Legend of Dragoon is painfully generic and slow. Additions aren't that interesting. The dragoon transformations are shit. It does have good music though.
>>
Practically all of them. I only got into RPGs when I was 25 and fuck the writing is horrible in all of them
>>
>>3211578
>your party are a much of mutes
>have no personality or flavor whatsoever

nta but this is basically true of the bg1 companions too. they say virtually nothing outside of their 4 or 5 voicelines repeated ad nauseum, which is the only semblance of personality they have. I'm on day ~100 and Imoen literally hasn't said a single word since like day 2
>>
>>3215103
>t. Queer fellow
>>
>>3209165
Mass Effect. I found the gameplay boring and I never liked BioWare writing.
>>
Gothic. I've tried several times and I just can't do it. Too clunky and the world isn't interesting enough for me to force through it.
>>
>>3210428
Yeah, same
You're like wow this is so energetic and collaborative and different for PS1 voice acting, this is amazing
then you get sick of it and the game also sucks to play
>>
>>3209165
I could never get into Neverwinter Nights games and their sequels. Something was always off. At the same time I could play all the other Bethesda games just fine. Even Jade Empire.
>>
>>3211639
this desu
the only thing I like is the art but the gameplay feels as dated as fucking pokemon at this point and I can't give less of a shit about the setting or characters
>>
Chrono Trigger

Literally every CRPG ever made
>>
>>3209658
>playing Enhances edition
>>
>>3209165
Man, all the "real rpgs" were such disappointments after reading all that praise coupled with shitting on "not rpgs", and being eager to play true RPGs.
Nope, actually you can't express character any more than in Bethesda games, and on top of that, the gameplay is mind-numbingly boring and a tedious waste of free time.
>you gotta roleplay a really agile intelligent person, otherwise the game sucks even more
The real RPGs are a real chore to play. I enjoyed the writing and voice acting in Vampire: The Masquerade. Otherwise RPGs suck cock and I will forever ignore opinions from faggy and arrogant rpg connoisseurs.
>>
>>3217733
Filtered. Stick to moviegames, /v/tard.
>>
>>3217733
RPG video games have never had good roleplaying
