What monsters have you been collecting/raising?
With the new DQM on the horizon are going to play the others to catch-up?
>>
>>3209092
Playing a bit of Cassette Beasts, as well as the DQM demo. I don’t have much to say about the former other than its elemental system is fun and unlike most other games, but it also risks elongating the combat a bit.

With how much freedom they give you to explore and circle back to full heal in DQM, I guess it makes sense that default tactic command is spell-usage. Hoping there’s dedicated dungeons that force you to strategize a bit more, though.
>>
>>3209092
Currently been spending my time on-and-off gathering all the G and F Ranks the the DQM3 demo will let me obtain, both to get the library sorted out and to figure out any worthwhile combos so I can kickstart myself back to having a solid team once the full game resets all the monsters to their default attributes.
>>
>>3209092
I recently played through DWM2's story for the GBC and had a lot of fun. One thing I forgot is how you gain access to monsters I thought were super strong in the Sky and Limbo worlds, like GreatDrak and BossTroll. I had bred for those thinking they were rare but nope. My favorite is GigaDraco because he has a butt belly and absurd HP growth. I remember grinding out a team of 3 GigaDracos with HealUsAll and GigaSlash as a kid.

Question for anons who played DWM2: did you ever get lucky enough for a Magical Key world that had boss monsters? I remember getting one that was Dream something and it had wild Orgodemir and Mirudraas and shit. VERY hard to get through. What are the differences between the GBC and 3DS version? I'd like to emulate it someday but not if it's really weird. Does the 3DS one have the monster size limit? I really would hate to not have 3 GigaDracos because they're too big, or 3 GreatDraks (my 2nd favorite).
>the new DQM on the horizon
I'm not interested because I don't have a Switch. If it's on PC, I'll pirate it because fuck Square Enix in 2023. Don't know how true it is but apparently the new game will have DLC and that's disgusting. IX sucked because of that and is unplayable without piracy, X is going to disappear if servers are pulled, and XI had minor DLC that was just some random items. It's still wrong and I will never support a company that engages in such a financial practice.

Also, another question for /mon/ anons: which Digimon game should I start with? There are so many. Is the first Worlds game for PSX (I think) good? I like DWM and Pokemon a lot, so I doubt I'll hate digimon.
>>
>>3209483
DQM 2 3D has a size limit. It's basically a Joker game that uses the shell of a DQM 2 remake.
The only good digimon game is World 1, a Tamagotchi game with a Pikmin-like structure. It's not for everyone. You may like Cyber Slueth but be warned it has a lot of talking and no way to skip dialogue.
>>
>>3209533
How much grinding is there in Digimon games? I really like that in monster raising games. Can you take a digimon and just powerlevel hard? How replayable are they, like with Magic Key worlds or Pokemon post game exploration?
>DQM 2 3D has a size limit
Aw man, that's too bad. I'll play it anyways because I'll still have a little fun but not having a bunch of big dudes is sad. Another favorite party of mine is KingSlime, SpotKing, and MetalKing, the full royalty. Do big slimes like that take up size slots?
>>
Looking for any good Mecha mongers. I've already played through the handheld Medarot games so thats been done.
>>
>>3209557
I never finished a Digmon Story so I don't know the grinding rate or how replayable they are. World 1 has both a lot of and little grinding because you can over-train a digimon so you need to do more than make them work out but getting techs is a bitch and there's the infamous lifespan mechanic so you're digimon will eventually die and you'll need to raise its reincarnation.
But it is super replayable just in the way where you can do things differently and better way rather than the things are different on another playthrough way.
>>
>>3209572
Metal Walker is one but I don't know if its good
I remember hearing Robopon 2 is good
The PlayStation 1 Medarot has a translation if you're up for another one
One of the Zoids games has to be a collector.

>which Digimon game should I start with?
For the safest, easiest game to play? Cyber Sleuth/Hacker's Memory. They're pretty standard JRPGs and don't really do anything too wrong besides things like very repetitive areas and overly long dialogue with some pretty shitty translation.
As for other Digimon games?
If you want a raising game, World 1, Re:Digitized, and Next 0rder all have their strengths and weaknesses. World 1 is probably the best so long as you have guide.
Digimon DS and Dawn/Dusk can be alright, but are possibly the grindiest out of any Digimon game. I actually think DS, which came before Dawn/Dusk, is actually better because it requires far less grinding and the maps aren't all the same maze with different skins attached.
After that Digimon games become moreso one-offs in genre and get more and more flawed.

>What monsters have you been collecting/raising?
Been playing through Yo-Kai Watch 3. Definitely been enjoying it, there's still just so much charm and little details that not only gives it a feel of having a high budget, but shows some passion in it too. Loved Blasters so glad Blasters T feels pretty fleshed out, even if playing with others is probably impossible.
But man, I can really see why the Japanese didn't like Hailey. Beyond just being annoying, I think the whole 'split story' thing doesn't really do the game any favors. Granted I'm still playing through the main story, so don't know what could change, but I find having two separate inventories and two separate teams to manage to just be kinda annoying.
>oh you like the team you're using? Too bad your done with this character for now play the other one
I'm hoping post game just lets me play as one without needing to use the other for some content, but I'm not holding my breath.

I don't know if they are good but Danball Senki and Biomotor Unitron probably count.

Most monsters are small. You can have all the slimes / king slimes / gem slimes in one party as they are only small size. Only a few boss monsters are Medium or large and that's really after credits that it becomes available.

I caught most of the overworld monsters and bred quite a few F class. After 7 hours I decided to call it quits so I can enjoy release.
I have been progressing into the endgame of joker 2 which I never completely finished. Currently at final boss labyrinth then endgame.

DWM is my favorite game of all time. Sadly, I now understand that it's my turn to be bent over by square enix. The DLC is borderline mandatory.
1. $10 - Mole Hole DLC - You can now freely catch any monster you've already caught. You can also catch monsters only available by synthesis. This is mandatory and a gigantic time save.
2. $10 - Coach Joe's Gym - Create a team around restrictions (1 type mon) and enter random dungeons. Pick up items as you go and try to kill the boss for rewards.
*This almost feels like a throwback to DWM. If it has a remix of the original flute track and lovewater pickups I will love it forever*
3. $6 - Treasure Trunks - Timed rewards. Every hour or so you unlock a new reward. This is literally paying to get yourself more addicted to the game psychologically. Fun. Rewards look worth it for long playthroughs.

The music had really good remade tracks. Sadly the general theme is like big happy marching band to the tune of dragon quest. I'm kinda over it.

The DLC honestly just might be the breaking point for me. I stopped playing to demo right after the G-rank tournament because I'm really debating with myself whether or not I'm actually going to buy it or just pirate it.
I want DQM to succeed, but holy fuck Jewnix is practically doing everything in it's power to make it not, from poor promotion to this atrocious DLC that brings the game up to fucking $85
Especially doesn't help that right after playing Joker 3 Pro for the first time, DQM3 feels pretty barebones.
>>
>>3209925
It wouldn't surprise me if the ability to manipulate the state of the overworld (seasons and weather this time around) is thrown as far into the game's progression as possible (if not postgame outright) to incentivize buying the Mole Hole to skip the hassle of idling around, honestly.

I honestly think I'm only getting the coach one as that sounds like a fun addon and worthy DLC. And maybe the treasure one if I have some spare gift card money and gold e-shop points. I can handle the grind so unless Squeenix hosts some tournaments and gives me some motivation to cut it down I won't need it.

Seems like most mon games favor having a single team or even just one monster that's absurdly powerful while a full collection is just a side goal. Are there any that actually make having multiple teams viable or reward 'dex' completion?
Closest I've seen is Siralim 3, but even that's a stretch.
>>
>>3210948
>Are there any that actually make having multiple teams viable or reward 'dex' completion?
My game will tie dex completition into the progression systems, and also reward the player for discovering new species.

How?

Not everyone wants to catch them all though.
>>
>>3211065

No need to catch them all, it will be like the PLA system but much less bloated. Battling monsters unlocks data from them. Completition rate opens up special locations with more monsters and special item rewards, etc.

Yo-kai Watch has a neat mechanic where if you get select groups of yo-kai you get an item or rare yo-kai. And it doesn't tell you what most of them are so you either have to figure it out or just get everything and hope for the best. Is that close enough?

Any Monstergirl games you'd recommend other than Monster Girl Quest Paradox?
I'd basically just want something in the same vein to tide me over until part 3

That shit is either a money laundering scheme or its gonna end up like spore.
>>
>>3214150
Well shit. Seems like this is shaping up to be a Joker 3 scenario where there's going to be a lot of roster padding via palette swaps that aren't series staples, between the higher grade tournaments in the demo and trailers like these.
I can already count three Slime Stacks for instance, with a safe guess of at least four if you count Metal Medley.
>>
>>3214461
They add more monsters and you complain about monster padding? You want less options for fusing?
Give me a break.
>>
>>3215042
Recolors are shit desu. It's worthless to have five thousand monsters if a good chunk of them are ugly pallette swaps. It only makes harder to get the monsters you like.

Redpill me on DQM/DWM. How Pokemon-like (derogatory) is the series? Are the GBC games still worth playing to this day or is it better to go for the DS ones?
>>
>>3216504
The GBC games are a bit odd in that they do better if you've played the mainline series too. The first game has so many proper callbacks to the first game in that a lot of the major recruit-able monsters are where you fought them as bosses or enemies.

DWM story: You and your sister are kidnapped in the first scene. You then have to battle your way to S rank in the arena, to enter the starry night tournament, which you have to win to go home and rescue your sister. After that is like 20+ hours of endgame content.
That is the entire formula, and they rehash that every game. It's the only first person rpg I really enjoy.
DWM is great and it's not that similar to pokemon.
It's not a terribly difficult game. The fun comes from fusions, and the originals are procedural dungeons while the DS is full 3d set areas. You level up to learn new moves, but your mons never evolve naturally.

It's free on an emulator, simple and the art is pretty good. It's my favorite game, and I've beaten it like 6 times on emulator probably over 800+ hours. If you enjoy optimizing stats and numbers going up, breeding monsters better at lvl 1 than your lvl 30 team the game has legs.

Don't believe the homos here btw. Joker series is fine.
1 is okay because you get a free legendary monsters to breed up.
2 is better in basically every way.
>>
>>3216504
Just jump immediately to Joker
>>
>>3216504
The series is more like SMT with how it's breeding/fusion mechanics work, as well as 3-4 at a time battle system rather than it being one-on-one.
>>
>>3209092
What is the online like in these games? Not keen on getting this on the switch when it may be on pc 7 months later but by that point I'd imagine most people will have moved on.
>>
>>3216755
I'm guessing there's gonna be a bunch of people like you who will be waiting for a PC release, or maybe even willing to double dip.
>>
>>3216755
Highly unlikely it will come out on PC. You're better off emulating, like I will be. Sacrificing online is a small price to pay for better framerate and loading times (and fastforward in battle anims)
>>
>>3216504
>How Pokemon-like (derogatory) is the series?
The only one that I can say it's more like Pokémon is Joker 3 Pro (I haven't played vanilla 3).
It's railroaded, the long legged dinosaurs interrupt you each five steps for a cutscene. The partner long legged dinosaur gives you buffs, tension and healing quite often. There's an option to scout high rank monsters every thirty minutes, it fails most of the time but it's bound to give you broken shit early on sooner or later.
It's gimmicky with the ride attacks. Riding your monsters in the field is based but the combined attacks seem unnecessary giving me Z moves/Tera/etc vibes.
Also you are giving a free rare monster just because.
A total recolor bloating. Probably the worst in the series.
My favorite is DQM 2 3ds. Is like the first two jokers but better.
>>
>>3216794
>Highly unlikely it will come out on PC.
Pretty much every DQ spinoff of the past decade (except 3DS releases, mobile releases, and DQ Builders 1) has had a PC release.
>>
>>3216804
Joker 3 Pro isn't anything like Pokemon and everything you listed isn't anything like Pokemon, just things you aren't a fan of.
Plus the dino partner straight up just stops talking after like, the first area or two.
>>
>>3216808
Online play is a big deal in DQM games and they won't want to bother dealing with cheaters on PC.
>>
>>3216818
>everything you listed isn't anything like Pokemon
Most of them are, those that don't are Pokémon like in the sense that were made to treat the player like a baby.
>>
>>3216794
Probably going to do the same in the end, the day 1 dlc price really turned me off for what looks like a budget title.
>>
>>3216831
>railroaded
Not unique to Pokemon. Besides, aside from like, the tower area, all the others are basically mini open areas that you can just screw around in until you want to progress. Can't really call that 'railroading.'
Already addressed the little dinosaur companion stops talking after the tutorial areas. As for his battle assistance? Eh, I honestly never found it game-breaking or anything. It's easy enough to Oomph or raise your own tension without him.
>scout high rank monsters every thirty minutes
How is this similar to Pokemon? Not only are these fights generally pretty difficult when you first get to them, as you said, the chance of scouting them is pretty slim. It'd be dumb luck, save-stating, or just a huge time sync of grinding or continuously trying for something that'll become average by the time you get to the next area.
>ride attacks
Never used them myself. I'd rather just do other moves. Ride fusion is the only thing I'd say is outright completely overpowered, and again it's nothing like anything in Pokemon.
>free rare monster
Only noteworthy freebie monsters I can think of are the starter, the Grypon, and then the giant bird right before the finale.
>recolor bloat
An issue sure, but one I wouldn't associate with Pokemon. Pokemon didn't even start getting anything akin to recolored until 7th gen.

So yeah, you're kinda talking out of your ass trying to compare it to Pokemon. And like I said, the only mechanic that completely breaks the game into pure ease is ride fusion, which you didn't even really say yourself.
>>
>>3216819
You say that as if hacked Switches don't exist.
>>
>>3216851

Yes, but Pokémon players don't want more railroading.
>Besides, aside from like, the tower area, all the others are basically mini open areas that you can just screw around in until you want to progress. Can't really call that 'railroading.'
Not always, it's pretty restrictive most of the time. It's not as railroaded as Pokémon but a lot more than the Jokers 1-2
>Already addressed the little dinosaur companion stops talking after the tutorial areas.
Yeah, just like Lille, Right?Bullshit, it talked to me in the cemetery.
>As for his battle assistance? Eh, I honestly never found it game-breaking or anything. It's easy enough to Oomph or raise your own tension without him.
It's treating you like a baby. Just like in the Platinum remakes that give you free crits and focus sash only because your partner has high friendship. And yes, tension is game breaking and being so easy to build up is bullshit.
>scout high rank monsters every thirty minutes
>How is this similar to Pokemon?
It's treating you like a baby.
>Not only are these fights generally pretty difficult when you first get to them, as you said, the chance of scouting them is pretty slim.
I'm talking about the scout made by the dinosaur, you don't even need to fight.
>It'd be dumb luck, save-stating, or just a huge time sync of grinding or continuously trying for something that'll become average by the time you get to the next area.
I got a level 40 Boss Orc and a Metal Slime before the snow level without savescumming. It's fucking broken.
>>
>>3216851

>ride attacks
>Never used them myself. I'd rather just do other moves. Ride fusion is the only thing I'd say is outright completely overpowered, and again it's nothing like anything in Pokemon.
It's an unnecessary and overpowered gimmick, just like in Pokémon.
>free rare monster
>Only noteworthy freebie monsters I can think of are the starter, the Grypon, and then the giant bird right before the finale.
Three broken freebies, one of them being fucking Starkers. Yeah is not busted stat wise but is a legendary equivalent. Just like the free Lati in ORAS.
>recolor bloat
An issue sure, but one I wouldn't associate with Pokemon. Pokemon didn't even start getting anything akin to recolored until 7th gen.
It's similar to Pokémon in the laziness. Also it's something that somehow outshits Pokémon and that's not a small thing.

The Point is that anon should play a more traditional DQM before J3 Pro. It changes everything way too much.

There hasn't been one in years, DQ is as popular as ever, and it's going to launch worldwide. I think it will do fine, unless Nintendo eclipses it with some other game.
>>
>>3214461
>>3215042
>>3215665
There is ZERO excuse for not including every DQ monster from every mainline game, including many of the bosses. The've had years of experience working on the Switch, models shouldn't be a big deal at this point, and the designers surely can figure out enough skills to go around. All that's left is animation which should be fine since it has been a million years since the last Monsters game. What (should) separate DQM from Pokemon the most is that Enix actually spends time baking the game instead of selling you raw, yeasty dough.
>>3217002
>This may be the last game in the series
I hope so. If the future of DQ is DLC kikery and trying to double dip with platform release fake-out (AKA PS4, Switch, PC for XI) then let it die (the Cobi/Tara stuff was pretty dumb too but it was objectively trying to copy Pokemon in that aspect). Wanting western releases was a monkey's paw wish. Fans on woodus/dragon's den were doing fine translating DQVII for the 3DS for example, until it released here. Same with Joker 3 and the 3DS Monsters we never got. I was pretty sad when Koichi Sugiyama died but at this point I'd only feel slightly bummed out by the loss of Horii and Toriyama because the games are spiritually dead and have been for over a decade. I'd like to think he isn't making these awful decisions, that it's higer ups who need to justify western releases by milking gaijin. Sure wish he and a small team could've bought the franchise from Enix and gone completely independent.

I'm enjoying Cassette Beasts a lot more than I thought I would. The comparison to pokemon is impossible to avoid, but it succeeds and is probably better than anything that franchise has shat out in over a decade at least. It's pretty flexible.
It's not defined by 'collecting' them, as raisers like Digimon World and Monster Rancher have no emphasis on collecting, instead being focused on singular individual monsters.
Dragon Quest V is often considered one of the first Mon games, but the befriendable monsters are totally optional and can be replaced with traditional party members, but the option to use monsters is still there.
Heck, in a strange way you could even consider the Chao Garden a type of Mon game.

Overall I'd say the key defining feature of a Mon game is a focus on monsters over traditional characters. This includes the monsters not being 'unique,' being replaceable in a sense rather than being a single defined entity, like say Red XIII in FF7.

I'm playing through siralim ultimate, and I need some assistance in figuring out the stat growth of the monsters. The Asura Heartripper is my starting monster and the rest of the ones I am using are created from fusion.
Base stat total for each monster:
Asura Heartripper (lv. 30) = 1112 (~37.1 stat pts/level)
Fire Salamander (lv. 29) = 943 (~32.5 stat pts/level)
Exiled Satyr (lv. 29) = 944 (~32.5 stat pts/level)
Centaur Ranger (lv. 29) = 990 (~34.1 stat pts/level)
Noxious Smog (lv. 26) = 872 (~33.5 stat pts/level)
Ancient Spirit (lv. 29) = 1030 (~35.5 stat pts/level)
All of them have Artifacts with 3 bonus stat sockets. The only difference specifically for the Asura Heartripper is that he has 2x single-stat bonus sockets & 1x dual stat-bonus socket while the others have 1x single-stat bonus socket and 2x dual stat-bonus sockets.
The issue I have is that I want to eventually (sooner rather than later) fuse this Asura Heartripper to get a secondary trait, but the stats he has are unrivaled compared to the rest of my mons. Also follow-up/unrelated question, are the natures from the offspring of the 2 fusion monsters randomized? I know that there are items you can use to change the natures, but they seem rare right now.

>>
Can a monster-collecting game be called one if you can only get one of each monster or is it just a normal RPG with the gimmick of a huge party?
>>
>>3222879
I'd say so, especially if the monsters are optional to get and you have to go out of your way to collect them.
Like Fossil Fighters you can really only get 1 of every vivosaur, because each individual fossil is added to one individual, even when you get a better cleaning score.
Though Fossil Fighters Champions let you but vivosaurs in a sort of storage, letting to get different ones of the same individual.
>>
>>3222133
I'd always thought that I wasn't much of a graphicsfag because I really don't give a shit about how many FPS something is, but Siralim proved to me that it's possible to design a game that looks like such shit that it disgusts even me.
>>
>>3222898
We do need limits though. Otherwise things like Lufia 2 could be called one as well.
>>
>>3222928
Well, that certainly has one mechanic similar to a Mon game, but I wouldn't say it's as impactful as the monster recruitment in Dragon Quest V.
I'd moreso call that a side-gimmick more than anything. Like how a lot of RPGs have some kind of casino/gambling area, but you wouldn't say the game as whole counts as a card game just because it has an optional way to play Poker or Blackjack.
>>
>>3222922
Agreed. I'm a nostalgiafag so obviously I can let some things go but over time I've become much less forgiving of graphics unless there is something unique to draw me in.
FF9 is a great example of a game I wouldn't enjoy if the AI upscale mod + speed bosts didn't exist.
Im the biggest DWM fan but I refuse to play my old games without an emultar 4x speed.

>>
>>3222922
Graphics and art style are different things though.
>>
>>3212994
Portraits aside, the game's systems seem to be competently put together from what I've experienced.

However, the start is pretty slow due to how many core items/features are locked behind quests.
You're gonna have a bad time if you don't rush the Spirit Barn and Broom, then Glider.
However, the Farming and Alchemy aspects seem to be mostly optional as long as you have strong monster/deck focus, since they only provide healing and stat buffs/debuffs (albeit pretty strong/useful). You don't (or shouldn't) sell crops for money.

As for the monsters, there are eight elements each with different card mechanics (although you can really only access five easily early on).
Each species has an ability and one static weakness. Individual monsters will have a second randomized weakness, and variations in stat distribution and starting cards, you can also actually see the former two in-battle before taming them by cursoring over them fortunately.
You'll have a team of three monsters, meaning you have the option of funneling a single element's core competencies for focus/consistency, or running different elements for greater utility with access to element-exclusive cards. Either approach seems to work well enough if you're deckbuilding correctly. I had Mono-Earth carry me through the early game and switched to Fire/Water/Psychic for the mid game.
>>
>>3223259
Deck-building is actually pretty easy once you understand how it works. Your monsters get a card selection at each level up, but you can also obtain consumables which let you add/remove or upgrade cards given through shrines littered around the world map. You can also buy them from a wandering merchant.
Point being they're common and accessible, and the shrines RESET between seasons (the game doesn't fucking tell you this).

On that note, there's a lot that the game doesn't emphasize until you experience it yourself.
Taming is done by feeding them with items, which is simple enough.
The big thing is that the level of monsters you're able to tame is tied directly to a skill tree. You get invisible experience by either taming monsters or hatching eggs, regardless of whether you decide to keep them. At the start, you can only tame up to level 5. The first skill raises it to 10, then 30, etc.
But this means that unless you grind out that experience by taming/hatching low level monsters, you could raise your team that started at level 5 to be level 30+ and be unable to tame anything in area you're fighting in because you didn't get the skill to raise the level taming limit.

Played through the Cassette Beats DLC and it was a resounding 'okay.' Way too short and too little content added for $7. None of the included new monsters' designs really grabbed me aside from Fragliacci.
This is also the first time I've played since the pre-DLC QoL update, and I find it highly annoying that they added in the limit of 2500 stickers stacks without fixing the glitch that makes identical stickers create new, separate stacks in certain circumstances. In addition, the new bulk recycling option is highly imprecise. It would've been better to also give us a manual multi-select option for when we want to keep some stickers of the same rarity but recycle others.

Your starter differs depending on how you answer Sancho's questions during the intro illusion. You can get Starkers, Rebjorn, Zoma's Little Devil or Slamen Tykes.
These monsters all act as ingredients to SS Rank monsters much later down the line, so it's important to make sure you don't turn them into fodder unless you're ready to grind up or cheat in some Multiplayer Plaza Coins so you can directly purchase copies of them.
Rebjorn's probably the worst of the bunch to gett, since not only do you need four Rebjorns to make Bjorn in the first place, Bjorn appears as a scoutable enemy in one of the postgame areas anyway, IIRC.

You don't need a CIA file, you just need to make a folder for the game to show up in the citra home menu. I thought that only could be done with CIA files. From there its easy to open a mod location for the game, drag the mod into that location, and boom, done.

Also from what I was told due to how the Moon Rabbit Crew update works, making a pre-patched version doesn't seem likely.

World DS is pretty linear and easy so you won't have too much trouble. While it requires tons of grinding to evolve to Ultimates you don't really need that to beat the main story.
For comparison, end game team in DS vs endgame team in Dusk, which I 100% used some cheats to speed up for.

It's like Digimon Story where you need to make that slime the 80th generation of its family if you really don't want a king or gem slime.
>>
>>3245408
I don't mind a little extra work.
>>
>>3245404
Technically yes but it wouldn't be worth it for a first play. When you breed monsters gain +1 +2 etc which makes them level slower but gain more stats. It's not crazy until like +13 and that takes forever to even hit level 10.
Have fun with the breeding system and focus on passing down skills or breeding types with similar atk stats.
Grizzly, unicorn, and breeding off boss monsters is best. Make sure to manage your inventory and use ribs / sirloin to steal monsters from other tamers.
Phoenix + ice bird and ice man + lava man are secret breeds.

You can find guides for early boss monsters but honestly the game isn't that hard. Go in completely blind and you will only fail one or two dungeons ever.

Not him, but Cassette Beasts is fine. The combat has many features that let you use lots of strategies well so even if the difficulty is low overall, you can still entertain yourself with different approaches and make any monster you like strong. Types actually have status effects/buffs and different interactions depending on the type matchups instead of just damage buffs. The story/characters were enjoyable enough to keep me playing, but the ending is a wet fart. Monster designs range from cool to garbage, but there's a pretty good range of them for different tastes. Fusion mechanic looks lame most of the time and is pretty overpowered even if neat. I really like the music. Problem is that it isn't balanced very well, if you're at all good at videogames you'll only struggle at maybe one postgame boss or the final "champion" fight. For example, I beat the level 99 postgame boss immediately after beating the story (somewhere around level 50-60 iirc) by just being invincible and abusing Walls (Substitute from Pokemon basically).

A solid game to buy when it goes on sale. DLC isn't really worth it and not at all balanced around even lategame fights sadly, but I guess it was neat and it had a clown with big boobs.

You need to consider the whole experience of discovering the mon, aquiring it, understanding how to use it, evolving it and lastly what you do with the evolution. I'd say at first you need to figure out how evolutions fit into the progression system and make sure that you have enough granularity.

Will your evolutions be very systematic or are they tied to individual mons? Compare the branching digimon lines with specific Pokemon and their short lines.
If it's very difficult to aquire you don't want that many evolutions(because it would mean your catch is the lamer base version). You're putting in a whole bunch of work, but then the game demands even more? You better make sure the reward is worth it.
You also don't want to chain complicated evolution requiremments for a long line. Some obscure side branch or alternate final form is great, but if you overdo it evolving the mon just becomes a chore. Consider the player that has their favourite mon become useless throughout their playthrough because they didn't figure out the hyperspecific evolution requirements.
There's also little point in putting a baby mon at the very end of the game(unless you are very sandboxy). After all the player already has a team, so any last minute replacement has to be appealing. Remember Volcarona from pokemon? By all means a cool mon, but realistically who could get it in a normal playthrough? If you go out of your way to grind for it, what the hell are you gonna do with it?
>>
>>3250491
>>3250571

Once as a thought experiement I planned the following system. The mons function more like RPG party members, so there were seperate equipment/skill systems.
>base form
>base form with extra stats and skills
>intermediate form
>intermediate form with branching skills(foreshadowing final form)
>three branching final forms

The reason I have five forms is because how evolutions tie into the power of a mon. Instead of leveling you feed items, so I need a mechanic to prevent players dumping everything into a super mon and ignoring the rest. Therefore each form as a limit of total stats and some nasty debuffs if a stat is neglected. So if I don't have enough evolutions game difficulty will swing wildly, being too easy when you have a new evolution and too difficult when approaching a new breakthrough.
Think what sort of player behavior your system encourages and try to align it with what you want your players to feel.
>>
>>3250571
>>3250575
>I think it depends on the structure of the game
My system is basically this: raise monster, as monster age it goes to its next stage. The 'adult' stage is easily attainable if you understand the game's mechanics. The 'hyper form' is attained after completing one of X criteria called 'Feats' meant to test the skills of the player and the monster. Depending on the criteria completed the monster gets a permanent boon aside from the typical growth stats and skills. These criteria are not monster specific, but I do want to make as many criterias a possible so I can make every monster feel unique. Did your giant dinosaur won 50 battles? thats a Feat. Did your blobmon just got maximum HP possible through countless hours of training? Thats a feat too.
>Think what sort of player behavior your system encourages and try to align it with what you want your players to feel.
I kinda want to recreate the feeling of DW1 where you feel pumped when you get that ultra after a lot of effort, though the requirements here are made available through the game lore so it doesn't require countless hours of trial and error or datamine to understand, and also makes getting a 'hyper' form unexpectedly maybe just when you needed it some good reward too. It may be repetitive though but I want to make a big enough roster so that it merits at least 1 replay.
>>
>>3250093
Honestly, I don't hate DW2's jogress system in concept. Its just the way it was implanted that was so fuckin grindy, the fact you had like 100 steps in the dungeon before you got kicked out, battle animations taking so long, etc that made it so bad. But the idea of constantly having to fuse your monsters to make them stronger, even if they start from a lower form again is interesting.

The real problem is it's only done for the level cap. If they made it a bit more like SMT, and you could carry over skills and maybe some other traits, increase your base stats, etc, then I think it would be a really fun system. Raising a Digimon up to Ultimate level then fusing it with another Digimon to get a Child level again but it carries over some cool ability that you want to get on a different Ultimate would be fun imo.

Can someone sell me on Yo-Kai Watch? It seems charming but I haven't had time to begin a new game before I finish my games in progress.
Is it more story-driven than Pokémon? The battle system looks interesting but also a little too simple. Are the stories good? And should they be played in order or can some games be skipped without any problems?

>The battle system looks interesting but also a little too simple
It's also stupidly easy except for some post-game bosses. The series is for young children.
>Are the stories good?
They're passable, and there are some funny parts but you aren't going to remember the game for a narrative.
>And should they be played in order
No, skip the first one.
In my opinion, the main appeal of the series is the presentation, the amount of stuff to do, and the designs. The combat is only engaging during bosses since they're all gimmicky. The city you explore is really detailed and full of stuff to find. You have loads of quests to fulfill. 3 has a second game in it. And the designs are mostly goofy and weird because they're foreign folklore and puns lost in translation. So it's a nice pallet cleanser from a more serious series. Though be warned getting yo-kai can get really tedious but it's the good kind where you spend an hour trying to get this egg to join you and when it finally does you'll be on could nine for a minute. Also, you will never 100% one without cheating as the nokos are Streetpass exclusive.

The auto-battle nature of the games is deceptive. It starts off easy, but bosses and some encounters can be genuinely very hectic with the stuff you DO have to manage, from soultimates to removing inspirates to swapping yo-kai around and healing them. 3 adds a bit more to it as the grid-based system more akin to Megaman Battle Network is more to deal with over the wheel from 1 and 2.

I'd also highly recommend the Blasters spin-off. Imagine a Monster Hunter game, but you can play as over 400 different characters. For me personally it's the best YKW experience, though it depends on your preferences. Though I also need to finish YKW3, which also has damn-near it's own full-game Blasters side content to do whenever you feel like it, so it terms of sheer content and variety, YKW3 is far and away the most jam packed.

Thank you for the long reply!
From your description it sounds like something I might actually enjoy, so I'll download 2 and 3, to see how I like it. The different versions are just like Pokémon, right? The only differences are available monsters?
>Though be warned getting yo-kai can get really tedious but it's the good kind where you spend an hour trying to get this egg to join you and when it finally does you'll be on could nine for a minute.
That does sound pretty good, actually. I like games with rewards I have to be a little patient for.
>Also, you will never 100% one without cheating as the nokos are Streetpass exclusive.
I'm not a completionist, so I don't care about this, although it's a little sad players can't obtain everything if they want to. Can't that get bypassed by some CFW mod?

Thanks to you too.
I've never heard of Blasters but your description makes it sound pretty cool. I'll take a look at some videos, maybe I'll start with that one, actually. Or would it be better to get familiar with the world and characters first through the main series games?

Snack World is a polished take on Blasters. It also has the enemy capture mechanic, making it appropriate for this thread.

>telefang games
Never heard about those, but turns out I got one of them as a bootleg Pokemon from Eastern Europe when I was a kid. Never managed to get past level 10 or so.

What I planned were less traditional mons, with potentially hundreds in a game, but rather 10ish RPG companions. Fantasy races instead of mons because making a character creator for humanoids is easier than learning to draw & animate all those creatures. I considered a normal mon game too(I think my combat system suits the genre well), but I haven't found what I could deliver that other games don't already do better.

Basically, as you go through the game your dialogue choices change various narrative stats and those decide what skills/forms become available. So you would go:

>base: lizardman squire from a disgraced noble family, out to restore the honor of his name
>eventually turns out the family really are dirtbags
>unlock Dragonborn "paladin" form by helping him live up to the noble ideals, even if they're just a fantasy
>unlock Salamander "bard" form by helping him free himself of familial expectations
>unlock Wyrm "dark knight" form in the Evil route by completely mindbreaking the poor guy and making him embrace all the materialism and corruption running rampant amongst the nobillity

Three forms per companion, main character is a shapeshifter that can copy any unlocked form. Some additional forms might be aquired from dungeons and what not. Keep the game itself short with branching endings so that people can go to NG+ cycles to collect all the forms.
>>
>>3250669
>Depending on the criteria completed the monster gets a permanent boon aside from the typical growth stats and skills.
In that case I'd stick to a three mon chain at the longest. With that system you can probably make branching paths really easily, like elemental recolors or one form for all the offensive challenges vs. a second one from all the defensive ones. Do you have any way for the player to figure out which challenges to go after or does each mon just get a small subset? Might also help if some boons bring a visual change, makes the player feel more accomplished.
I'd probably throw in some exceptions to the system just to make it feel less artificial. Like a legendary that doesn't get a seperate form after completing all challenges, but only slight alterations because it's now in an awakened state. Or a ghost mon you get by sacrificing another one and the ghost inherits the completed challenges. Life is messy and full of special cases, I like fiction to reflect that.
>>
>>3251175
I think digimon survive had the right idea but its lame that the branches are tied to the path score.
>>
>>3251447
>In that case I'd stick to a three mon chain at the longest
I think you're right I feel like I have exhausted ideas to make the 4 stages be different enough from each other to avoid the 'it just gets bigger trope' (which I personally hate) but maybe the awakened state could be a slightly altered adult form that gets X or Y physical change depending on the challenge it has completed, like you suggested so it ties both systems together.
>Do you have any way for the player to figure out which challenges to go after or does each mon just get a small subset?
The player goes on quests to get access to monsters, items that alter raising and lorestones from an ancient civilization that has clues on how best to raise monsters, so its a matter of playing the game.
>Some exceptions to the system
I've thought about this but I will probably build it after the main system so yeah !legendaries or special mons have exceptions too.
>>
>>3251442
>turns out I got one of them as a bootleg Pokemon from Eastern Europe when I was a kid.
Yes thats 'pokemon diamond/ jade', most people played it as that and then learned about them afterwards. Translation was bad and the game was full of bugs (i.e. saving freezed the game) but its worth a playthrough (using vba save states) and some mons are cool, they feel like some point between pokemon and digimon art styles.

Blasters is itself is based off a simpler little side-game in YKW2 where you played as the Yo-Kai. The spin-off proper takes that idea and greatly expands on it. It's generally self-contained, and any reference to previous games are minor. It's a mission-based, more boss-focused kind of game, as said similar to Monster Hunter, whereas mainline are more JRPGs, albeit pretty unique ones in their flow and general vibes.
It's up to you. Only thing is is that Blasters is at it's beak with multiplayer. The AI team mates aren't the best, and while it is possible to solo everything, it's genuinely really difficult, and multiplayer is generally the best way to play it. Thankfully you can do multiplayer on citra, but it's gonna be way harder to get it than back when Blasters was new, especially since 3DS servers are going offline in the near future.

Monster Sanctuary is pretty solid overall. The fact that you have access to every monster you've collected at any time mean there's no hassle in swapping them around or using their field abilities to get past obstacles, as it's a Metroidvania where the movement/puzzle power ups are also monsters you fight with. And I enjoy the combat in general as well.
It's also got in-built other modes like Nuzlocke and Randomizer, which to me is a plus.

Only downside I'd say it really has that the monsters are pretty underwhelming overall. some are neat but overall they mostly just feel generic and are there to fill a roster.

Shiren the Wanderer 2 has monster catching. Shiren 5 has friendship licenses that allow all members of a species to stop being hostile towards you. Shiren 1&3 have monster meat that allows you to temporarily transform into monsters and use their unique abilities. Torneko 3 has monster recruitment if you play as Torneko's son. Depending on the game there can be a lot. All digimon games can have up to 6 evolutions that have more and more difficult evolution requirements as you go. A large aspect of managing the tamogatchi based ones is that digivolution requirements are very specific and digimon die and you start again every few hours. The turn based ones tend to have a system where you can devolve while retaining stats traits and moves

Happy Halloween!
Yeah yeah I know. But the sequel came out and it's genuinely really good. Even on Normal it feels more difficult than the harder difficulties in the first game, new element and weapon types, and there content is spread out really nicely so that the total 207 monsters aren't too cramped together. I haven't experimented with the whole Buddy system yet but that has potential for some crazy synergies. Plus it has actual native controller support now.
And hey now there's an option to skip the h-scenes so you can focus entirely on the gameplay.

Saw this in my recommendeds. Interesting topic, but the guy only goes ever very few examples, and the end of it is pretty much just him going on about how he's thinking about the mechanics of his own game that he's making.
At least it was highlighted that the genre did start off completely devoid of any capturing devices, and that Megami Tensei, Dragon Quest V, and Digimon focused more on the monsters being equals rather than pets. And then once Pokemon came along the dynamic completely shifted now almost everything uses some kind of capturing device.
>>
>>3256059
I hate that the capturing device is a staple since it tends to become more bland on every iteration. And I haven't seen many improvements mechanicamly either. The most devs deviate from the trope is nexomon having quick time events to increase capture rate. I can't believe Pokemon hasn't implemented that after decades.
>>
>>3256157
Pokemon hasn't implemented that because everyone already knows that rapidly pressing B after the throwing animation will cause the capture rates to go up.

>>
>>3256721

>>
>>3256735
They really aren't. Raising stats in them is by nature repetitive. The real filter though are the death mechanics. Most people just can't deal with the idea needing to restart the stat-raising stuff once a monster dies.
The best that specific genre has gotten was with the re-release of MR1-2 where 2 ended up being a solid stream game because it's laid-back, repetitive nature made it easy for streamers to talk to the chat a lot.
>>
>>3257046
>Raising stats in them is by nature repetitive
I find monster rancher does this best, and even then the fun factor is not quite there. Maybe more randomness should play a role or a way to make the player decisions while raising count (i.e. training Power 3 times in a row makes the third one be an even bigger gain)
>Most people just can't deal with the idea needing to restart the stat-raising stuff once a monster dies
I have some ideas on how to fix this but I'm not sure if they could work.
>>
>>3257429
Let's hear 'em.
>>
I think they are mostly DW1 improvements.
The idea is to just make trained stats be inherited baseline to the next generation. Each time you train that stat level gets accumulated so when your mon dies and you start raising another that collected stat gets added to the new mons. You would eventually reach max stats so it needs to be balanced (or gatekept) so that the player can't reach this by the start of the game. I'd make it kinda like in BoF dragon quarter (not a mongo but still an interesting mechanic), each time a monster life cycle ends, it increases the maximum trained stat you can pass. So in the end you wouldn't need to train that much to reach where you previously were.

>No mention of the COMP
In most games, the COMP is the main reason you're able to see, communicate with, and store demons in the first place. Creators of the demon summoning program are notable characters, and the Devil Summoner games has objects like saxophone, umbrella, and special cannisters as objects for demon storage. Games like Nocturne or V are the exceptions.
Granted the main process of getting demons is just straight up convincing them and his overall points are sound, but I think it's still counts as a device. Am I nitpicking?

>Am I nitpicking?
I think the main point is the 'capture' aspect of these devices. SMT has the COMP and such, but those in it of themselves aren't used for capturing the demons outright, moreso simple storage as a way of explaining why you can walk around without this big party following behind you. In a similar vein, Digivices in most Digimon media aren't used for literally storing Digimon, moreso just being able to create the bond between Tamer and Digimon.
Yo-Kai Watch also does it pretty well, in having the more random befriend chance of Dragon Quest, but the medals Yo-kai give aren't some storage device, but rather a way to summon them from elsewhere through the Watch. And hell the anime even shows that Yo-Kai can ignore the summoning if they want to.

Chibi has never really bothered me on it's own most of the time. I find it funnier that the whole chibi form thing is part of the game's lore even.
Only time Chibi has bothered me is with Ni No Kuni 2 because the first game didn't have any for it's overworld, and it feels tacked on for the sake of it's dumb RTS segments.
>>
>>3265613
Never tried ni no kuni really. Stories 2 already showed that ditching chibi yields more sales.

I wouldn't call Stories 1 chibi. 2 is more proportional but 1 would be like at, the very least end of chibi when you compare it to what people generally think chibi is like.
Also Stories 2 sold more for a wide variety of reasons.
>1 wast barely advertised whereas 2 was quite heavily advertised
>at the tail-end of 3DS lifespan
>2 came after World making MH mainstream
>2 simultaneously released on Switch and PC
Sure the art style being less overtly childish likely played some factor, but it's minor compared to all the other ones.
>>
>>3265532
true
>>
>>3265652
>>2 came after World making MH mainstream
MH was never niche retardo
2 was sold more because they finally knew what the target audience was.
1 was made for literal children while 2 is made more for teenagers.
>>
>>3265774
In Japan sure. But you're lying to yourself if you think MH was on the level of Capcom's other big franchises until World globally. The fact that P3rd never got localized and was the best selling MH until World proved that Japan did a lot of the heavy lifting for the franchise's sales until 5th gen.
Again, the shift in models and tone certainly helped, but it was far from the only reason it succeeded.
>>
>>3265790
>In Japan sure
stories 1 flopped in japan too
>>
>>3265795
Yeah, because of the other reasons mentioned.
Stories 1 released in 2016 in Japan and 2017 everywhere else. Same year the Switch came out. It's happened to many other games that sold at the end of a console's lifespan.
I agree with you that the style and tone shift was for the better, just that it wasn't some extreme contributing factor to the success/failure of either game.
>>

Eh, wouldn't say it's all the Switch's fault. Stories 2 still looks pretty good with it's environments and whatnot.
It's hard to shake the feeling that Squenix just isn't putting much stock into Monsters 3. Not just from budget, but with the day-1 DLC and non-existent marketing too.

You're a complete fucking mongoloid if you think it's the Switch's fault instead of Square being kikes and not giving any budget to spinoffs because they need to burn all of their budget on final fantashit projects that will all bomb instead. DQXI on switch looks way better than DQM3, it's not a fault of the hardware, it's the fault of not being any fucking budget on this project.

Square and Enix merging was a mistake.

From what the demo offers, I get the feeling it'll satiate anyone that's got the autism for grinding and fusing, unfortunate visuals and performance aside. Probably not to the sheer degree of customization as Joker 3 Pro, but it makes sense to reel things back into reason since this is actually DQM3. Maybe things get insane in postgame for all I know, but I'm looking forward to invariably gravitating towards a ragtag team of slimes and whatever boss monsters are easily attainable.

From an interview after stories 2 release
>RGJ: If Stories 2 does well, what are the chances that we’ll get a Stories 3 or other spinoffs from the Monster Hunter series done at a similar level?
>Tsujimoto: Regarding Stories 3, we’ve been focused so much on Stories 2 and pouring all our energy into it that we haven’t given much thought to another sequel yet. We want to make sure we’re focusing all our attention on what’s in front of us. As far as new spinoffs within the series, if we come up with good ideas that we would like to deliver to fans, then the possibility isn’t zero, of course. Generally, we start with an idea and use that to create a new world view. For Stories, for example, Oguro had an idea for an RPG from the perspective of a rider who befriends monsters instead of slaying them and I thought it was interesting. That’s where Stories got its footing and if we have another idea that we can build on regarding Monster Hunter’s world, then we would pursue it. We just want to make sure we have a solid foundation before we do so.

Aside from that there was a leak that mh6 is coming for switch2 but thats about it. Rise and stories 2 where announced simoultaneously I think? So perhaps when mh6 gets news we will now if they are working on stories 3 or not.

With the sheer ambition Stories 2 had with cut content, from monster names in the files to dropped mechanics like the 5x5 Gene grid and keeping Element swapping, I think it's clear that there's still a lot more they can do with Stories. And given it's success, it feels all the more likely.
I'm hoping that old leak about Stories 2 getting a Rise-themed expansion is true, and they decided not to do it because they figured they may well save that content for Stories 3.
>>3278979
I also feel like with the 20th Anniversary of MH being next year, that it'd be announced around that time too. MHNow feels like a pretty low-budget game that just exists to hold people over until the good stuff comes around.

Can someone give me quick review of Fossil Fighters if you played it? Not a link, just a personal opinion of the game if its good or not
>>
>>3279740
It's a wacky kids game. The gameplay revolves around cleaning fossils and using the dinosaurs they turn into to fight. On my replay of it, I greatly enjoyed it but for mostly non-gameplay factors. The battles are just fine but the cleaning is super satisfying. I almost want to recommend it for that alone.
>>
>>3279758
Does the cleaning work on emulator?
>>
>>3279767
Only if you have a microphone. The phone one works.
>>
>>3279767
Quite well actually. It's more about precision than speed so it translates quite nicely. The only issue is the lack of a mic but you can just map a button to it or hit the table with your hammer to shake dust off.
>>
>>3274814
I haven't played in a long time but I think there's a bunch of themed world keys that you can get once a day, which have some online exclusive monsters like the rocket slime boat and some Japanese general themed monsters. I'm also pretty sure the online lobby shop is the only way to consistently get stat boosting items and rare eggs but I could be wrong as I don't think I got to the true postgame.

Very solid. Cleaning is unique and satisfying, and the story actually becomes surprisingly interesting later on in the game. The battle system is fairly unique too with how zones and buffs work.
I'd also highly recommend the sequel Champions as well, primarily because the combat keeps the same ideas, but is greatly improved upon over the first. Plus more fossil variety and ways to clean basic fossils faster. Plus there's some more variety in the Viviosaurs.
>>3279767
Very well. The mic cleaning can just be mapped to a button. And if you really want to get 100% on cleaning? I think save states are fair game. It's so hard to get 100 legit, especially with some fossil types.

Finally got around to beating Yo-Kai Watch 3 for the first time. Here was my team for the final boss, and most of the game really.

Man, what an absolutely packed game. Not only so much content, but so much polish on top of that. Just so many things to do, I still got more than half of Zombie Night to do and I barely even touched Blasters T, and now I got post-game stuff to do too. Took me 61 hours to do the main story, and that's with only doing roughly a bit more than half of the side quests.
Story is dumb and fun. Hard to imagine this game would have parodies of things like X Files, Mr. X, and Deadpool. Plus, y'know, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg.
The new grid combat does feel more satisfying than the wheel from 1 and 2. Just more dynamic and ways it can be played around with.

Quite frankly I think my only real complaint about the game is Hailey. Just generally pretty annoying and says dumb shit even in important scenes. I can see why the Japanese fanbase hates her. Plus swapping between her and Nate is just kinda tedious. If they had to keep that feature in, making it Katie would've worked just fine. Glad that it looks like I can completely ignore playing her in the post-game now.

Given I still got so much to do, I can feel pretty confident in giving the game a 9/10.
Also, Rongo Swirll's full minute drum solo pausing the boss fight is peak.

The only one really worth skipping is Caravan Heart. But a couple of others like the remake of the first game and Joker 1 in that tier of not being bad but are in series with significantly better entries. So just don't make any of the ones I named your first unless you're the kind of guy who plays a middle-of-the-road entry as his first to make the better ones feel more grand.
>>
>>3288899
DWM1 and 2 if you want to see how the series got its start, Joker if you want a similarly basic game that starts to set up the foundation of the modern DQM games, Cobi & Tara's Marvelous Mysterious Key if you want a modern DQM that's close to where DQM3 (Dark Prince) is in terms of baseline mechanics.
Don't play Joker 3 or its Pro version until you've already sampled enough DQM to be familiar with the series, and especially not before DQM3. Joker 3, especially Pro, while their monster rosters aren't impressive, have the most unhinged teambuilding of the franchise and have mountains of postgame monster customizability.

Doesn't mean it's happening, but if it was, why would they ruin a surprise announcement? Anyway, I think it's more likely they'll wait a couple more months still. I doubt they want to take attention away from their soon to be released new games yet, but they should hurry up releasing the game on Switch.
>>
>>3291133
The actual mechanic to it is kind of lazy, but was probably so you could avoid having it changed if you want.
The game is also absurdly easy without you even having to break it by knowing some super efficient routine. It looks really nice if you don't mind how cartoony some monsters look, though most designs never recovered afterward to how they look in 2 which is disappointing, and having multiple ranches with an exploration event around them every few months is kind of cool.
I can understand why a lot of people didn't like it on release, but each game is so different from each other at this point that you can probably find something to like about it.
>>
>>3291351
Well just started, there's no kidding 6 unskippable cutscenes that you have to mash through before you get to actually play. Everything else looks fine, its your typical MR game although attacks are different, skill and speed were combined into one (not a bad change really), the searching around your farm minigame is kinda lame.

all DQM games since DS has online battle.

>If so, do you guys think it’ll be competitive at all?

Not sure about DQM3 but in older games, it is competitive but "competitive DQM" isn't turn by turn decision making like pokemon. It is mostly AI auto-battler and the focus is team building.
>>
>>3291770
I actually like 3 and always have, but it is most definitely a flawed game. I played it last winter for the first time in over a decade, and I blasted my way to S rank with my first monster. I didn't even trigger any events outside of the intro one for each region. It's not a terribly interesting experience that way. I might pick it back up and occasionally consult a guide just to make sure I'm not blowing straight past content.
>>
>>3292627
Overall I'm liking the game but the pace is weird. Battles are kinda easy, I picked a zoom and after an hour I'm already C rank with just 2 skills. I know I need to find certain items to get new skills and level them up but I have only came across 2 noisy halls and the lord of the skills. So I guess progression is clunky.
>>
>>3292881
I think you can find the skill bits when searching, but they're also rewards for certain tournaments. If you want to be at least a little efficient, and you probably do because skills take forever to increase, you should hit all three noisy halls once you memorize their locations, and then spend whatever points you have left on poking around. I think the 300 ran leaf is the best pick, but do whatever if you have the money.

I'm betting either no reboot and that new cat will just be a new addition to the main cast or a soft reboot and Jibanyan will be in the post-game at least. There's no way there's going to be a full reboot. The less they change the more assets they can reuse to save money and rope people in with nostalgia.

>>3293915
Yeah I usually don't care much about graphics, but with the Switch it just kinda bugs me that some games at least look pretty decent for its specs, but then others just look and perform like shit
DQM isn't the worst offender by far, but I'm emulating so that first screenshot is even at x2 resolution and I probably have less slowdowns than on actual hardware, but it's still not great
>>
>>3293926
DQM3 does have some lousy performance in some areas on native hardware, so that's pretty disappointing. Well, at least the demo does, I can't claim to know about the full game as I haven't played it. Thankfully battles run without a hitch.

Man I really want to get DQM3 because I like the demo, but it's so fucking scummy what SE is doing with the base price, plus DLC.
It's such a shitty situation. I want to throw money at it to say "hey, the west likes this series!" but they've put me off with a really cretinous and insulting business practice. I could maybe see the molehill being something to pay extra for, but locking the ability to re-recruit monsters you've recruited before behind a paywall? Fuck off.
>>
>>3294410
You can always re recruit any monster. The DLC just lets you buy copies of fusion-only monsters instead of making them manually.
>>
>>3294462
They did a horrible job at conveying that information, then. But that does make it at least a little more palatable.
Speaking of which, is there a way to know what monsters are breed-only? Are those the ones with the golden border?
>>
>>3294462
>lets you buy copies of fusion-only monsters instead of making them manually.
it let's you scout them in some small areas akin to Monsters 2 3DS rank keys
and just like in thay game the monsters are harder to scout because of level shenanigans

>>
>>3294410
I know nothing about this specific game, but it's never, ever worth getting more of something if it's just going to be held back on purpose with shitty business decisions anyway. That's not a reasonable compromise, and telling SE that by withholding your money is not a disservice to the series if they're just going to disrespect it, it's actually the moral thing to do.

Basically, SE are huge faggots and we don't deal with terrorists.
>>
>>3294696
>>3294610
Okay, that figures. But then how do you know which monsters are breed-only? Is it in the Monsterpedia?

I thought Treasures was gonna stay Switch-exclusive but then it got shadow-released on Steam six months later.
Not that I give a shit about Treasures because it looked incredibly mediocre, but you get my point.

Currently debating in my head whether it's worth it to just buy now or wait and see. With a game like this I don't wanna have to re-grind everything if a PC release does happen.
But if I wait and nothing happens, online will probably be dead or "solved" (not that multiplayer is my main focus, but it'd be nice to experience once in a DQM title at least).

I got the freebie metal slime from tiny medals before I figured out how to make king slime. And now that I'm in upper echelons, I wound up making a King Cureslime instead. Though it's sitting on the bench until random invulnerability from a bigger-upper monster stops being enough to get me through boss fights
>>
I'm still playing the demo and managed to find and recruit a large wing slime, which also happens to be my favorite slime. I wasn't aware that regular monsters could come in large variants, so that's pretty cool.
Do you need two large parents to breed a large monster? No matter what I pair it with, all of the offspring are small.
Furthermore, how are large variants even found? Are they just a rare spawns? I did find mine in the middle of a slime rain (if that's even what it's called), so is it related to weather events?

Yes any monster can be bred to be Large. So there are small and large monsters, but they still vary in size within their own bracket. by fusing your monster with a larger monster you will increase its size (slime + bongo drongo = slime but slightly bigger) and you need to do this until your small monster is the largest size for that small monster. there is no indication that you've reached this threshold, you just need to eyeball it. Bondo Drongo is recommended for this type of fusion since they're already almost always bigger they'll raise your small monsters size. Next, you'll need to fuse your almost-large small monster with a second generation Large monster. so again we look for bongo drongo. Large monsters are a rare spawn and the only advise I will give is look for larger model monsters in the overworld and when you fight them there will be a chance to be Large. Fuse 2 large monsters you scouted like this and produce the 2nd gen (L. Bongo + L. Bongo = L. Bongo*). Finally fuse your first monster with this 2nd gen Large monster and it will produce the Large Monster you were looking for
>>
>>3299077
I wanted to clarify for the first part it can be a Small Bongo Drongo just to raise your monsters size. the actual Large monsters aren't needed until the 2nd part to fuse the 2nd generation Large monster

Adding more monsters like Joker 3 pro or dqm2 3ds is a good because there's a ton even with color swaps but when you have the next dqm have less monsters than their last 3 games and 20% (out of my ass, probably more or less) are pallet swaps that don't even have anything unique about them? It becomes a problem.
>>
I kinda hate toriyama's artstyle but I'll give this a chance.
>>
>>3299101
At the very least, palette swaps would be less damning if they also made DQM originals with unique shake-ups from the baseline model so they're not JUST recolors. The collab trio are a good example, especially the Burger Mimic. I unironically want to use that fucking thing because it's a top tier concept and I hate that it's looking to be Japan-only.
