With the announcement of Shiren 6, I've decided to make another Shiren/Mystery Dungeon thread. What do you think? Does this news all but confim another new Pokemon Mystery Dungeon? Will Shiren 6 live up to the old games like Tomie promised? Or will it be panned by hardcore fans like 3 was? Oh yeah, will Torneko make a return?
Trailer since OP is a retard and didn't post ithttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P40nBq2TokI
what's the best one in the series?
>>3204025I've heard the japanese fans have a holy trinity of games: Shiren 1 (SNES), Shiren 2 (N64), and Asuka Kenzan (Dreamcast)
>>3204025asuka kenzan. does everything 2 does right but better.
>>3204269Crazy how the best one doesn't even have the titualar guy in it.
>>3203997Looks good, mechanics seem more similar to the earlier games than Shiren 5. I like the island.>another new Pokemon Mystery DungeonYeah, there's no reason they wouldn't make more, it makes them money.>Oh yeah, will Torneko make a return?Probably not, 30th anniversary is in a couple days and I'm guessing this is how they're celebrating it. If they're not bringing Torneko back for the anniversary, and they haven't made a new game in so long, I doubt they intend to.
>>3203997I have played 3 Mystery Dungeon games, but none from the actual main series. Pokemon Blue Rescue, Izuna Legend of the Unemployed Ninja, and Omega Labrynth Life. I wouldn't recommend Omega Labrynth. It's sorta shit, and even the fetishy content isn't done very well. Other 2 were pretty fun.
>>3204704I don't know much about Omega Labrynth Life, but PMD and Izuna generally let you keep levels, while Shiren is usually the opposite. Though I think you'll like Shiren. Shiren 1 (and its DS remake), 2, 3 and 5 are available in English.
>>3204710OLL is full reset on levels and chest size, which matters for stats but over time you can spend resources to improve each character's specific abilities, so there is still some snowballing going on. Honestly feels a lot faster than in the other 2 to be honest. Does the order matter for Shiren - e.g. is there some overarching plot I'd need to be aware of, or is it pretty episodic?
>>3204719It's episodic, but it's also full of continuity connections. They don't matter that much, and the release order is completely different from timeline order.
>>3204719>but over time you can spend resources to improve each character's specific abilitiesAs in those are kept even after you fail a run?
Shiren 6 artwork
>>3204807
>>3204749Yes. You upgrade each character and each ability separately, but once you do you have it for the rest of the game. There's also a lot you can do with equipment - if you're not losing your stuff you can keep upgrading things to make some pretty BS equipment over time.
Info on the gamehttps://mysterydungeonwiki.com/wiki/Shiren:Mystery_Dungeon:_Shiren_the_Wanderer_6_-_Coil_Island_Exploration_Record
>>3204019why's it 3Dslop again? 5 looks better than this.
>>3205188Because no one bought 5
>>3205188Japan likes it because it's similar to Shiren 2 and normies think pixel art is cheap and lazy. It doesn't even look bad>>3205227DS and Vita versions sold poorly, but the Switch version sold well and lead to the development of the new game, was explained in the interview. I guess the ingame message must have helped too
I've beaten 1 and 2, should I bother doing the post-game for either or just move onto 3? Are any of the spin-off games translated?
>>3206586Many fans say the post game dungeon of Shiren 2, Road to the End, is the pinnacle Shiren experience. I've personally chosen to beat it first before trying out any other game, but that's just me.Shiren DS2 has a translation patch, but it isn't officially released yet.
Any hopes for 6 other than it getting translated?
>>3208343Please give us a normal, no-nonsense Shiren. Remove night, remove equipment leveling, bring back Asuka (looks like they did that already) and make her playable, and make wands work like in 2 and Asuka Kenzan, make them ricochet off walls and influence stairs.
>>3208518>remove equipment levelingThis is already confirmed, equipment leveling works like the early games.
Why does everyone hate night mechanics? It's not like they're forced in every dungeon, and it's a fun occasional gimmick. I don't care to see it return, but if it did for some bonus dungeon I wouldn't see a problem with it.
>>3208702It's fine enough when it's optional but still isn't too strategic, I feel. Enemies move randomly, and you absolutely must use stairlight unless you don't have it or want to handicap yourself. And don't get me started on the hellspawns that are dark fearrabbits, it's bad enough the day form exists.
>>3208702Any tips for getting through the night in 5? I feel like I'm just fucked if I don't have a good torch.
>>3204704I miss the old izuna /v/ threadsThose where the days
>>3210342If you're going through the story, use Gen. He's probably the best of all the allies (if you don't fully level Okon or Koharu) and grind floors 1-14 of lost well and heavenly lake to learn the good abilities from the master npc, especially stairlight. When there's no dark shaggas on the floor, I tended to use crawling confusion alongside electrocute. Also, if you're in a carry in dungeon, stock up on super torches.
>>3210348Does Izuna offer anything gameplay wise better than Shiren?
>>3210380NoWhen I played it I didn't actually like it very much. I didn't enjoy etrian mystery dungeon either
>>3210415Ah, I see. I played through Etrian MD and didn't like it as well. Maybe I'll try the actual Etrian. The worst thing about Shiren is that every other mystery dungeon just doesn't compare. Hopefully, dungeon crawlers will scratch that itch.
>>3210459The Etrian Odyssey games I've played are great and much better than Etrian Mystery Dungeon, I don't know how that game ended up being so boring. I also don't know why they went with a PMD approach with multiple generic dungeons when in Etrian Odyssey you explore one big maze like in Shiren during the main story.
I've been playing Shiren The Tower of Fortune and The Dice of Fate and it's hard as fuck, but Okon is cute, she's the only reason I keep coming back even after getting fucked in the ass and losing all my items.
>>3210517The game doesn't let up in difficulty even in the end. All I'll recommend is to tag your favorite items and abuse the point card system if you want to go that route. Blank srolls saved me countless times in the main game.
Seems like Izuna will get a revivalhttps://www.gematsu.com/2023/09/izuna-legend-of-the-unemployed-ninja-revival-izuna-announced-for-switch-pcFans will definitely be happy about that
>>3210486>when in Etrian Odyssey you explore one big mazeConsider that the last non-remake title they put out before EMD was EO4, which is made up of several main dungeons and a number of smaller, 1 floor caves.
>>3211716Very cool to see. It tells us basically nothing, but I am excited for to see it getting picked up again. I'm not sold on the new art, but it is literally just the one picture so it's hard to judge. It looks like they lengthened her hair, which I think is a shame, the short hair was cute
Has there been any progress on the Torneko 3 and Shiren 4 translation patches? It's been over a year since any news on either one of them.
>>3213352Straight from the translator:Shiren 4 English Translation Status Update - July 6, 2023We've made some progress with the patch within the past few weeks, so I wanted to give a quick update. It seems the game can run on hardware if certain hacks are disabled, meaning the hardware issue(s) have been isolated to some degree now instead of being a complete unknown.I'll skip the details, but basically worst case scenario, a trimmed, "Lite" version of the translation which works on hardware with the problematic hacks removed might be a viable release option in the future (An example of this version running can be seen here: https://youtu.be/vBiPTxijnTA).But that said, there's still no release date, and please don't expect progress to happen very quickly - The team member working on the programming side of the project still doesn't have a lot of free time, and real life takes priority over projects like these.
I keep trying to get into the SNES Shiren game and it keeps filtering me pretty hard. I've played PMD, Void Terrarium and Genso Wanderer before so I'd like to think I know the general gist of the genre/series, but this game just feels so barebones, on the account of being super old and one of the first MD games. Have you got any tips, or do I just need to play more and get more game knowledge?
>>3213436It's definitely different and more obtuse compared to more recent mystery dungeons, but with every thing the game has against you, it gives you an advantage. Really, you just have to exploit the advantages to win. For example, in the SNES version, when you use a doppleganger staff on an enemy, every enemy on the level will not attack you and try to find the clone. This feature was nerfed in the DS remake. There were also some troublesome enemies added in the DS remake you don't have to worry about. Maybe watch a speedrun or two to learn from the pros.
>>3213388Thanks for the info, friend. I wonder if these issues with running the patch on real hardware also impact running it on a hacked Vita as opposed to a PSP. I mean, I would assume it would be the same.
>>3213436To me the more barebones mechanics of Shiren 1 SFC (which are still more complex than anything in PMD except maybe Super) is part of the appeal. I like Shiren 5 but it has so many things going on it's hard to keep track of. You might like the DS remake more as a first time player since it made the main dungeon easier without items and rebalanced weapons to not make it too easy if you upgrade them. While in the original game it's either too easy or too hard (for a new player at least) depending on whether you bring in items or not.>do I just need to play more and get more game knowledge?Pretty much. There is some luck involved but mostly you need to learn how monsters behave and use your items.
>>3213481>depending on whether you bring in items or notBringing items is gay, we only do naked runs in this house.
>>3206586post game of 2 is greatfor 1 depends on which post game you're talking about, the level 99 dungeon is pretty bland but the puzzle dungeons are good.
>>3213493>>3206586Another thing about the post game dungeon of 1, Fay's final puzzle, is how it effectively requires you to abuse an exploit to make strong gear. The stats of enemies in shiren 1 snes is insane, like 225 attack power insane. Every level 3 enemy will one shot you if you dont have adequate defense. Sadly, getting this defense requires you to use this item called a division pot to duplicate items. Like the other anon said, 2's endgame is great, especially for completionists. The 99 floor dungeon in that one doesn't require you to abuse a strategy like 1 does.
Shiren 6 has an english name now. https://shop.app/p/8047745007873?utm_source=shop_appSeems like we wont have to beg for an English translation after all. That price tag is steep, though. I love this series, but I think I'll go the pirate route for this one.
>>321351160 bucks, huh. Nah, that's way too steep. Digital will probably be cheaper though, right? ...Right?
>>3211716Never thought I'd see Izuna come back. Hope it's good.
Damn, Shiren 6 coming west a month after the Japanese release? Quickest turnaround ever! Usually we gotta wait for an enhanced port like 6 years after the original release. Spike Chunsoft must really see some potential in growing the western fanbase. Hopefully they also do a PC port not too long after.
>>3213739Cute boy (female)
>>3213511Link got taken down. Hopefully this one stays up. https://www.gematsu.com/2023/09/shiren-the-wanderer-the-mystery-dungeon-of-serpentcoil-island-coming-west-on-february-27-2024That shop link being taken down almost confirms it was official and they made a mistake leaking it so early.
>>3213739Girl is Belbelfun on instagram if you're curioushttps://instagram.com/belbelfun?igshid=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==
I just found out that there's an android version of shiren 5 but it's only available in japan and I can't find an apk for it, anyone got a link?
>>3214265I've been trying to find that game's APK for ages. I fully believe it has not been cracked yet. Probably both due to not enough interest and being Japan only (despite literally having an option to change the game to english, chunsoft, you baffle me)
One day we'll get an English patch for Young Yangus...one day...
>>3214700Unlikely since the cutscenes have built-in japanese subtitles hard coded into them and the game as some weird screen bloom effect that emulates like garbage
I wonder why more people did not take advantage of the lack of good mystery dungeons on mobile before Shiren 5. The only thing that tried seemed to be Labyrinth of the Witch.
>>3215010Probably because nobody wants to play on a phone, or at least they shouldn't
>>3215016It plays surprisingly well, you should give it a try.
>>3215010mobile market isn't as simple as just porting console/PC games to it and expecting profits
>>3214789Ahh I didn't know it had concrete techincal issues like that. I've seen people float the idea of fan translating it I just assumed there wasn't enough interest and someone would get to it eventually. Dammit.
What franchise would you like to see get a Mystery Dungeon game?
>>3217529metal max
>>3217529Yo-kai Watch. It kind of attempted it with its blasters T mode in Yo-kai watch 3, but it was less of a traditional roguelike. Honestly, I just want PMD with Yo-kai Watch.
>>3217529Digimon. I've always wanted a good version of World 2.
>>3217529Surprised there hasn’t been an attempt at making a Persona or SMT one yet
>>3217529Megami Tensei makes the most sense, imo.
>>3217529Like the other anons said, SMT feels like a natural fit for it. You could also probably get away with a Monster Hunter MD, playing as a palico and befriending monsters in dungeons.>>3217726Honestly I really like Blasters T. It's a more unique spin on Mystery Dungeon games without it being confined to a grid and being more like an action game. Not that I don't enjoy the usual grid movement of MD and wouldn't mind a YKW version of it, I just think Blasters T already does a good job with it.
>>3217726>>3217793What's Blasters T like? I'm assuming it's not turn based from what I'm reading, but Blasters in Yo-Kai Watch 2 (haven't played 3 yet) doesn't play anything like Mystery Dungeon.
>>3217975It does use the gameplay style of Blasters from YKW2, with influence from the Blasters spin-off as well. However, what makes it a Mystery Dungeon is the structure. You enter randomly generated dungeons with loot to collect, infinitely respawning enemies that you can recruit, and invisible traps that'll trigger when you step over them. It's pretty much as close to MD as it can get still using the Blasters gameplay.
>>3217980Sounds fun, another thing to look forward to when I play that game
