Im talking games so obscure or niche, people will look at you funny when you bring em up in casual conversations. The most obscure ones ive played are Thousand Arms and Wild Arms, what about you guys?
Harobots: Robo Hero Battler for GBAIt's a pokemon clone with mecha from Sunrise series instead
Pretty much just King's Bounty 1990 but more jarpig-esque and every unit occupies their own tile instead of being a big stack like in HoMM. Trying to survive the early game with waves of peasant suicde squads was fun but it gets pretty shitty after the protag turns into a one shot invincible god at the mid point
>>3066840i played thousand arms. realtalk, who was best girlmost obscure for me maybe magic scroll tactics
>>3066840most obscure? probably a fan-translated hentai rpg. Everyone has played Thousand Arms, and Wild Arms is super common and gets mentioned here all the time. >>3066905Wyna was the best girl. Shame the game is so generically blue-ball with the romances however.
>>3067172Ah I love this series
>>3066840Everyone plays Thousand Arms and it's major enough to have had a fucking Ayumi Hamasaki theme song Wild Arms is a major title
>>3066840Zakuzaku Actors. (ざくざくアクターズ) Pretty damn good and free game.
>>3066840If I posted it here it wouldn't be obscure anymore. What a gay thread.
>>3066840I don't really think you can count a ps1 JRPG with an official translation as super obscure, everyone I knew growing up played Thousand Arms and Wild Arms is a long running series thats so beloved it got a spiritual successor funded on kickstarter along with that Shadow Hearts one a year or so ago.Arcturus is probably one of the most obscure rpgs I've played, but thats solely because of a language barrier and it taking almost 2 decades to get an english fan patch. In Korea its a classic but even people in the west that never heard of it have seen its impact from stuff like Kiseki or Ragnarok Online.>>3066905Nelsha is best girl, I really liked Rachet too.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SANRhLOWjg
>>3066905Aerith Jr. or Whiner.
>>3066840Thousand Arms and WA aren't obscure at allMore on the side of SRPG than RPG but mine would beVelvet File/PlusSunrise Eiyuutan 1-2J-Phoenix (whole series)G BreakerSeireiki RaybladeQuo Vadis 1-2
Probably some RPG Maker shit like Alter Aila
>>3066840Probably either Nugga Cell (PS2 japan-only game that got a slightly enhanced port for PSP) or Saigo no Yakusoku no Monogatari.I can recommend the first in good faith to any turn-based and Senran Kagura enjoyer.
The English version of Legend of Heroes 1.
>>3066840I've met I think two people in my entire life who've played Kartia besides me. I don't know if that's a "You're not talking to the right people" thing or not.
>>3070983My brother bought Kartia because he was a huge fan of Amano’s art.Watched him play through the male MC’s scenario, but I was too young to beat it myself.Did manage to finish Vandal Hearts as a kid though. Mom’s meth head bf wound up pawning it along with our entire vg collection, which consisted almost entirely of obscure jrpgs.
>>3066840in what world is Wild Arms obscure? had like 5 mainline games for two generations of consoles and one remake, and all of them were localizedWild Arms 1 was heavily advertised in a lot of magazines on the 90's, even making it to the cover of said magazines, and nowdays is constantly bought up in "best rpg for the Ps1" tops.
Currently playing Magical Starsign, - ds game which has a day/night cycle and realtime planet alignment that influences its spellcasting system.Juno 06, a space strategy game on steam. Tomato Adventure on GBA, although idk how obscure this is anymore. I like the way each attack is treated as a "gadget" with its own battery and attack setting that can be tweaked.
i'd probably say summon night
>>3067172Haven't actually fucked with Amayui, Kamidori was a good time though. Even if I never finished it because shit draaaaaaaaaaags in the elf route, and I always try to do hers first since I know sword girl and mage girl are more central to the main plot.
>>3066840This the game some 90's single mother would rent for his son on his friday night from blockbuster and get him a cheap pizza hut pizza
>>3073393>single mother>his son
>>3066840Probably some shitty rpgmaker porn game, done a shit ton of them over the yearsHonestly they tend to be pretty comfy
>>3073429Wish these two would be released for modern platforms.
>>3073429Heard of it but never played it.>>3073432Non-tank controls and subtitles for cutscenes, that's all I ask.
>>3073429Man, we need more of misery porn RPGs like this. All we have now are RPGMaker NTR shit.
>>3073470It's a rogue like elder scrolls.>>3073496It got a sequel but I never played it.
none of you niggers have played Ephemeral Phantasia
>>3066840On consoles, probably Evolution (2 on the Dreamcast or Worlds on the Gamecube). It's not the most well known Sting game and it seems to be very love-it-or-hate-it.Emulated, either The Adventures of Hourai School or Dream Maze: The Kigurumi Adventure, both on the SNES (though I only got up to chapter 3 in the former and didn't get terribly far in the latter).
Would a game count if I specifically went out of my way to find and playtest some of the more obscure RPGs?If yes, then probably Meremanoid. That's a pretty weird game about mermaids, apparently based on an obscure OVA. You have to mash and then hold a button in order to move, and instead of normal attacks you essentially set the character to autobattle, with each attack addind an additional hit, until you cancel the autobattle. If no, then the most obscure RPG that I actually played and finished would be that Slayers game for SNES. It's a very basic game, but it's short, and the plot is not that bad. The fan-translation that I played is pretty good, and has plenty of humor, in-line with the source material. Characters are not OOC, too.
>>3074585what do you mean by playtest?are you working on its translation or something?
>>3066840>Wild ArmsFirst time I meet someone else who played that one.
>>3066840i wish i had the free time to play this in-depth
>>3071980Magical Starsign is a Brownie Brown game. No way in hell it's that obscure.
>>3072387In the west, the mainline games are so overshadowed by the Swordcraft games it's hilarious. But in Japan, the mainline games are leagues and bound more popular than any of the spin-offs.
>>3080569Fair enough, at least nobody I know has heard of it. Honestly I just brought it up because I think the magic system is pretty neat
>>3066886Cheese for maps. Raise control. Stop time. Teleport your 1000 knights right into the enemies shit.
>>3066840Toss up between Eternal Eyes (PSX), Eternal Poison (PS2, no relation), and Battle Hunter (PSX). Lots of good memories of playing Battle Hunter with my best friend in middle school, he had a character on a memory card and would come over every weekend to play this bad boy with me.
>>3080657>I think the magic system is pretty neatCan you give me a run down? Graphics look pretty charming.
Shaman King: Asu e no ishiIt was pretty basic and you could hardlock yourself from progress if you didn't have the correct build. Kinda reminded me of the first Saint Seiya rpg on Famicom in that regard.
>>3080818There's a bunch of elements (fire, water, etc) that beat each other, and they each have an assigned planet. Those planets orbit the sun in realtime during the overworld navigation, and orbit a little each turn during battles. When a planet is in its assigned area (red for the fire planet, etc), magic associated with that planet is 2x stronger. There's also some magic that lets you move the planets yourself, but it uses a lot of mana. Light and dark magic don't have planets, but instead they are stronger during the day and might respectively, and the game has a day/night cycle that works the same way as the planet orbiting. The game also has some other oddities. It's a DS game. You can tap your characters during their spellcast animation, and if your timing is good, they deal more damage. You can also guard against enemy attacks this way. Actually, the entire game is playable with the stylus, which is a bit weird. Some people don't like this, but for me it was a plus.
>>3066840Isn't this the game with the dating events and the chick who wants to smell your farts?
>>3080970Well you've got me sold, that sounds very entertaining and refreshing.
