Not likely. Yes, scripting technically allows you to do most of/all/more than 2k3 Maniacs allows, but 2k3 Maniacs enables THROUGH the stock maker rather than forcing you to learn arcane knowledge. And then, you can STILL learn to do more powerful things with Maniacs by learning its own TPC code anyway, but it isn't required.

I don't think it's a copy of any of the FF games, mechanically it's quite different - especially to V which has a big focus on job swapping and customisation through that. Customisation in my game is more gear based, managing limited equip slots to create variety.

The joy isn't in plugging in someone else's method and getting something that just works. Those who understand and can implement their own means of accomplishing their goals come out as stronger, better developers. Half the fun for me is in finding ways to make 2k/3 do things I want them to do. Maniacs Patch helps open the gateways to some higher-end stuff, but it's still stuff that you pretty much just have to make yourself since most ways of achieving ends in older RPGM aren't well-documented, and even if they were, you pretty much have to custom make your stuff for YOU, largely invalidating the copy-paste method.

I've been doing that as well, though the theme of my game is a bit hyper-specific and AI generated stuff seems to fall short so I'm stuck painting the rest anyways. Which is cool, saves me a ton of time vs. having to draw it all from scratch. Its a fantastic idea either way and more people should give it a shot whether you plop in the result as is or not

Been thinking about game-designing, and I'd like some feedback.
Story wise:

I've worked on such a comfy RPG before I lost all of the files :(

The combat was inspired by Mardek RPG - The enemies were based on elementals and each one had it's strengths and weaknesses (fire was good against earth, but didn't deal much damage to the water, etc). The bard would learn skills as you traveled through the world, there was an immortal mage which would ressurect a few turns after he died and also a traveler who had two turns in a row and while his attacks were weak, you could use him to spam items. It was extremly enjoyable

It all felt so lively. The dynamic story, random banters, various approaches to quests, random events like throwing people out of the windows or meeting friends from sidequests on the road to another place, extremly interesting cultures and places

For example, frozen north you could only access by teleportation and there find a union of cities that won't ever open their gates, because the frozen barrens are just too dangerous - people travel between massive, but cramped fortresses using waygates, but they are losing contacts with each other so you have to join expeditions to discover what's happening while you fight Frost Giants, etc. on your way

It's funny, you're right but I never thought about this that, I based it on Majora's Mask and Etrian Odyssey for the exploration, and Phantasy Star for the Tech and cyborg parts. Also a twist, that won't be spilled out to you, the world you are in is actually a compressed Earth, changed by billions of billions of years.

Speaking of this, a recurring problem I've seen with job systems is that when you Master a job, you essentially are wasting further Job Points gained until you decide to equip a non mastered job, which is terrible for both both normie and autistic players. FFV is less troublesome, since you can change job anytime, but you could end up making your mage into a warrior with poor physical stats, or your warrior into a mage with poor magical stats, again, this is a problem for both normies and autistic players.
With this system, there should be minimal problems:

Another problem with most RPGs with accessories is that there is no middlge ground, you either take the stat boosting acc, or the one that make you immune to ailment(s), or the one with special effects, again, no middle ground, and if you don't take immunity to ailment(s), you're more likely to get screwed, since unless they are games like FF6 that eventually goes about Out of Box tactics,
With this, I hope the problem will be mitigated, since you can decide what ailments you'll be immune to, and what stat to boost.
I'd also like to partially congratulate smart players who look up at the menus, are preparing for a snow zone, and decide to gain immunity for a Frozen ailments. And then make them realize that yes, the montain is a volcano.

I haven't started on my RPG Maker title yet, though I used to work on it back in like '01 or so (not sure when it actually game out as RM2K, but that's my first foray into it), though I HAVE worked on the story and general gameplay mechanics.

I'm waiting until I'm a super master in coding before I really delve into the programming and development aspect, but for now you guys can anticipate a game that's basically a hybrid between Robotrek (awesome SNES RPG, underrated), Monster Rancher, Final Fantasy VII (materia system, but better), and Suikoden I-II (recruitment of lots of characters, only they all matter to a degree), and maybe more if I can figure out how to blend them well.

The general premise of the game mirrors The Crusades and what went down during them, only it's not based on any real-world religion. In fact there's no religion to speak of, but the idea is the same, but I can't say too much without spoilers.

Anyway, I need some ideas how to make the game really shine, so I would appreciate if anybody would reply and tell me which RPGs have mechanics they really liked, so I can attempt to implement them into my game.

To be fair, it won't be too great because I don't have a graphics artist of my own, though I AM doing commissions for the music so that will at least be pretty good, but yeah graphics will be about as good as the latest RPG Maker titles can make it, unless I find enough money to hire a graphics artist without risking my game looking like shit.

Like, let's say, I want to make a simple town. I immediately want to start using my own assets. So, I find myself in the position where I can either create my own tileset (never created one from scratch) or use someone else's (purchased or ripped). Then, decide on music, sound effects. Then, actually building the map, filling it with NPCs and events.

And I don't know if I should start with a town, or if I should do a dungeon instead, work on creating enemies, I dunno.

How do you guys work out what to focus on? And how do you keep at it once you get something started?

Yeah omori did a great job but it still looks and feels very RPG Makery.
Meanwhile you can look at any "Final Fantasy/RPG Maker inspired" and the UI just feels very different. Crystal Project for example.
It's a limitation of the engine that I don't think can be overcome, or requires way too much work compared to just using a different tool.

Which maker are you using? Any RPG Maker version can do this indirectly by storing actor ID data of your party (or literally just the 1st position but at this) to a small variable array and checking those to see who is in position 1. You just need to take care to update this array with the most current party info any time a change gets made to it.

You can go for something specific with your plot if you have a plan or get inspired by something. I am not talking about copying some game or book, you can get ideas from watching a movie, listening music, going for a walk and so on. Brains are quite bizarre and can cook up some cool and weird shit completely unintentionally.
I can also recommend to figure out the setting first (fantasy, modern, sci-fi) and then start filling it with possible wonders, dangers, stories and adventures. The plot can come out on its own if you have a setting on hand. I especially recommend this approach if you want to make FF/DQ/SaGa clone.

No. All video game genres are distinguished by their patterns of gameplay. Not by appearance.

You don't necessarily need levels or exp. But the player does have to grow stronger(or just capable) to meet threshold requirements. It's all about what the player is doing.

There are Visual Novels that have psudo-battle systems.
I recall "To The Moon" and a bunch of Kickstarter projects got slammed for calling their games "RPGs" because they look like rpgs until you actual play them and there's nothing to do.

For MV/MZ if its the same enemy ID (like for example a leader calling for more mooks) you could just make a skill that calls a common event that turns a switch on. You then configure the troop to make the enemy appear (event in the pic) when that switch is turned on and you need to set 'Appear mid battle' by right clicking the enemy on the troops position tab. I think the maximum number of enemies you can have by default are 8.

Possible? Yes. The drawn backgrounds are literally nothing since all you need to do is, well, import an image of the drawn background.
If you're trying to get characters to move around, animated like that gif, you'll need to put in some additional work. Probably with some eventing that shows spritesheeted animations or something whenever you need it to happen. We're talking "possible" here, but what's "reasonable" for you may be a different story. Wolf RPG editor is less familiar and more of a pain in the ass to work with for RPGM users. Yes, it has many, if not all of the great things that the Maniacs patch brings, but at the end of the day you're pretty much just going down the exact same roads to achieve similar ends in both makers. What Wolf has on 2k3MP barely matters if it's more difficult to use. The whole 16x16 tileset in MZ thing got me excited so I went ahead and bought it. Going to try to make a 2k/3 FSM looking game. I may have to go with 24x24 as things like autotile (3x3 in 2k/3) don't scale well into MZ due to them being 2x2, unless I'm missing something.

I had a few assets ready to go and threw together a quick PoC for how I want to do interiors. Unless I absolutely have to make a separate map, every interior will be on the same map and be enterable.

I'm also exploring whether or not I can do multiple building levels easily. See gif for a demonstration, ideally the building to the right would "vanish" and give way to more interior space for the floor below it. I'm not sure this is possible to do without some chipset swapping fuckery, which is too much of a bother in the long run.

I also need to figure out if it's possible to stop weather effects from rendering on certain parts of the screen. So for example, a rain effect only occurs on tiles that aren't interior tiles.

No plugins, at least not yet. Right now events handle everything, the roofs are big events (pic rel) that get their opacity toggled when entering/exiting through a door. I'll probably write something to handle this so I don't have to do event scripting every single time I place a door and a roof.
