>The Monster Jam starts in a few days! What do you have planned?
I've got a lewd RPG I've been working on alongside the rest of my team. How do I justify entering it in the competition? There's currently no monsters in the game (although we do plan to add them since it's a medieval high-fantasy setting).

Some gameplay from one of our earlier play-tests:

>>2725148
Lmao, now I wish we'd added the centauress companion planned for our game, instead of focusing on mechanics and area exploration. Oh well, maybe next time.

He's by far the biggest one, they're not to scale in that pic (I think our artist sized them according to their importance, which is why the MC dwarfs everyone else). Call it artistic license.

I just realized RPG Maker Unite releases this year and it's already August. I wonder if we'll see a decline or rise when it's here. Maybe it'll be even faster for development and we get more completions.

Your game has a start, middle, and end.
That's it.
We have people who make all their own assets, many who use the rtp and free assets, we even have a chad who just puts in whatever he wants indiscriminately.
Some anons make games that are like 3 hours (Shoukan Gaki, Lament) while others make games that are only a few minutes long (Sarah and Sara, Cat in a House) as their first projects or just because they like shorter games.
Some have heavy gameplay focus, others have no gameplay focus and are more about the story (Jet Series).
I suggest playing random games from the past jams to see what I mean, and because it'll make the devs happy.
>>
>>2727511
You decide the lenght, the size etc. just try to include the theme somehow(if you can)

With 2000, you might have to install it in compatibility mode. Right click both the 1.07 installer and the RTP, go to Properties, then compatibility. Select XP SP3 or something and it should install on windows 10.

For the record, the latest Steam versions of both 2k and 2k3 are DRM free, so these older versions while interesting are outclassed by something that won't even try to stop you from using it. Steam 2k3 in particular has some massive upgrades from old 2k3 that make it a no-brainer.

Been chatting with the creator of RPG Rewriter (2k/3 translation dumper, reinserter, and much more) to try and see if it is possible to elevate the program to the level of the increasingly unreliable RPGMakerTrans. So far, things are looking up.
>RPGRewriter will soon have an option to include commented-out copies of the original dumped text strings so you can reference them during your translation, rather than having to save a duplicate copy of the original lines/bump it down past the text insertion limit
>Automatic generation of additional text boxes if you exceed the 4-line limit on individual dialogues, just like RPGMakerTrans already does (and subsequently, automatic removal of them if you change it later on)
>Support for dumping/reinserting RPG Maker 2k3 Maniacs Patch features which use strings such as Show String Picture
I know this message will only appeal to exactly 2-3 people tops in this thread, but it is still great news since up until now, RPG Rewriter has been a necessary evil rather than an ideal tool for TL work on 2k/3 titles.

Let's say I wanted to make an RPG Maker using no mods or scripts or coding or anything of the like. Just custom assets and the built-in functions.

In terms of pure vanilla functionality, which one will offer more freedom, and be more accessible to users outside of the RPGM fandom?

I love simple JRPG like RPGM games, but I don't consider 1080p nostalgic. For example, the 2D version of Dragon Quest XI has not only a horrible font but it's high resolution. every individual branch like that. After all, what "else" is going to happen? You should clean that up and just use individual Ifs for that with an overarching Else condition that handles if it's none of the above.
Alternatively you could be really smart and use a show picture command that shows images based on a variable in the filename/spritesheet it out and be done with it.

Was about to dignify this with an extremely detailed response but accidentally clicked a meme button on my mouse that took me back to the previous webpage, eating my post in the process.
Anyway, the provided example/comparison above isn't an optimal or even recommended way of menu design. I'd PERSONALLY rather just spritesheet each possible command/party member and foe name/etc and call them all up only when necessary, effectively creating the contents of a given menu on the fly each time. This sounds like a pain but since you can and SHOULD be tying it back to other parts of your eventing/variable handling, it's smart and infinitely flexible.
There's no one-size-fits-all method for any of this and the joy of RPGM/Game dev in general is that it is largely a problem solving game where the battle is you VS your own limitations VS the engine's limitations. No guide can teach you to do exactly what you need to do at any time, but you can learn an impressive number of tricks to approach any number of problems in countless ways.

Eachother. They're cannibals and their way of reproduction is eating the older, less spry members of their species to harvest their energy and impregnate themselves. Only the females do this, the males eat flowers and grass to prevent getting eaten. They probably had a normal reproductive cycle at one point but mutations had other ideas.

>>
>>2739169
I don't know. Most of my RPGM experience comes from being a kid making the most basic shit imaginable. I've been trying to make something more serious as an adult but I'm still pretty stupid and inexperienced with it all.
I just wanted to have a standard currency for buying items and gear and a more specialized currency for buying unique gear that would be acquired from specific places.
At first I thought I could just make a key item to act as the second currency but then realized I had no idea how to actually make a shop menu for the player to spend those on items.
>>
>>2739173
Probably something like
>if trying to buy this item
>see if player has this key item
>if player has key item
>take it away and give player the item he was buying
>if no key item
>don't give him the item and tell him he needs a key item
>>
>>2739166
Variables can be used for a variety of things. They can be used for number storage or providing different options.
If you want to use variables as money, have an event that adds onto the variable however much money you want to get from it. Then you subtract the amount when buying something.
Not good at explaining, maybe I'll make a youtube series on rpgm tutorials.
>>
>>2739176
Isn't this scripting?

>>2739178
No no that explanation actually makes a lot of sense.
I think the part I'm most hung up on his how to actually display this to the player. Like obviously without a script I can't create an entirely new shop screen, so am I stuck with using a player choice branch?
>>
>>2739176
>>2739196
Wait I think I'm catching onto this as well. Using a conditional branch right?
Though it would still be a cumbersome menu. I'll keep going over my options here and see if any of it works well.
>>
>>2739196
You can display it in 2k/3 in a text box with /v[variable number]
>>
>>2739198
You can create a custom shop system with eventing only with enough patience and determination.

Most basic bitch way to do this without any fancy shit would be
>Whenever Special Currency is acquired, change a variable devoted to this
>Use choices for purchase of items
You can obviously do as much custom eventing as you want to make a shop program of sorts. Emulating RM2k/3's default shop processing screen as a custom eventing thing is child's play.

you have to work at a pokemon gym, basically you get teleported to some gym and are faced with a line of trainers, you get 200 for each win, the trainers would be fairly easy, and you can quit whenever you want. the catch is that you can't buy items/heal outside battle so if you fight like 8 in a row you'll be out of hp and will have to resign with only 1600$ to pay off the debt

Its 7 days away and i still have no idea how to impletement monster catching and also i want to make a monster storage system like a pokemon pc(for switching between the monsters not for keeping multiple copies of 1 monster there will be only 1 slot for the normal version and 1 slot for the shiny version because there will be no randomized stats like in pokemon).
Oh well back to making monsters and writing more story while i think on how i will make those things.
So far i have like 14 monsters which could be doubled if i make shiny versions to 28 and my story is 468 words long(not including the filler npc dialogues but thats still nowhere near im basicly only in like the intro before the real action begins and it ends when the main character and his best friend fight their first monster and get taught how to dominate the monsters and make them their servants but i already have a rough plan of how the story will be just dont have a detailed script)
I have 4 sprites for humans.(but they will most likely be replaced by the time i finish depending on how the tilesets will look like after i finish them and i need to make a lot more for all the human and nonhuman npcs/merchants/teachers etc.)
I havent even started making a tileset or a map(but i know what settings i want the game to be in i just havent like tiled it out its just in the concept art phase currently).
Im planning for my game to be araund ~50 hours long so i will need A LOT more monsters than just 14 monsters(which will also evolve 1 or 2 times each into new forms after reaching a certain requirement this also includes the human characters but their requirements will be a lot more complicated than just "feed her x" or "level her up to x")
Will i make it?

>Shininess
no idea how you're handling your monster data in general but can't you just use a variable to determine shininess?
>V0001...species
>V0002...Level
>V0003...Exp total
>V0004...Shiny Yes/No
etc
As for "box" storage, this is a solved problem
>Have a random area off in space in your variables where nothing else will touch
>V2001...Start of pokemon box area
COMMON EVENT: DEPOSIT
>Pointer variable @V2001. Check to see if it is "empty" with a zero-check IF: v[v[x]]=0
>if no, +the data block size of your monster data to your pointer, repeat
>ELSE: input monster data to the variables one-by-one, +1'ing your pointer with each step in this kind of array
>V0001...species
>V0002...Level
>V0003...Exp total
>V0004...Shiny Yes/No
>V0005...ATK
>V0006...DEF
>V0007...Sp.Atk
>V0008...Sp.Def
>V0009...Agi
>V0010...HP
>V0011...MP
>V0021~30...Move IDs
then get rid of the monster from your party.
This is only an example but the point is, you can store a shit ton of useful info about the mons you deposit.
Then when the time comes to withdraw, you can make a system that populates a list by scanning your "box" area for just the monster ID variables until it reaches the end of your desired box zone, and when you want to withdraw
COMMON EVENT: WITHDRAW
>Fill in actor data to your "next available" empty actor slot by doing the exact reverse of the above
>Point through your list and use Value of Variable at index until you have "withdrawn" the monster, preferably zeroing each value out as you move down to "empty" the box slot
And boom.
It's easier than it sounds.
RPG Maker (2k/3 anyway) also lets you access "hidden" variables that aren't normally available if you point out of the usually available range, so for example I can use variables well beyond the normal 5000 simply by pointing to an arbitrary one like
>V10001
And as long as I remember where that is, I can access the data in it whenever I like.

Add this to your script editor: https://pastebin.com/cXwWVeP7, POKEBALL_ID is the ID of the item you want to use to catch enemies, the other 3 are the variables you want to store the index(I use this together with Hime's Enemy Levels script to get the enemy's level), id and name of the enemies you target with your pokeball.
Then make the item you choose call the pic related common event.
This is what I'm using for my own game and it's good if you want something simple that just works. If you want a more complicated and probably better option then go with >>2740773.
>>
>>2740787
Yeah, the option I presented above is just a way that works with all makers, from 2k on through MZ. However, using a script like you can with non ancient makers eliminates the need. However, there is a virtue to designing it yourself, doing precisely what suits the needs of your game, rather than being at the mercy of some other dev's whims.
My post explains the theory of a possible method, and nothing more.
tl;dr learn to understand the shit you want to design instead of throwing plugins at it.
>>
>>2740793
You are already at the mercy of the rpg maker's dev's whims with every version by default tho.

For the record, using a variable array method is EXACTLY LIKE how an actual pokemon game stores and handles monster data, but with a slightly different presentation. The neat thing is that even with the likes of RM2k you have far fewer restrictions than an actual pokemon game does since you have a much wider range of memory values to work with. None of this matters if you don't understand it, however.
>>2740802
It's this simple:
>RM2k/3 supports 256 color indexed png/bmp images
>An image's transparent color is always the color in index 0
use GIMP/photoshop and set color mode to 256 colors, make sure your transparent color ends up in color index 0, and you're gonna make it.
