I wish I could start working on my game right now but I have to work on my bachelor project so I can't.. Oh well, starting in july 1st is plenty of time too.
I'm currently learning to draw. And by that I mean my GPU is crunching some numbers to produce images. I only got this up and running properly today since I spent the last five days doing linux and windows installing/reinstalling autism on my new rig. It was all mostly wasted time, but at least I learned some things. Will be interesting to see if I can get some usable vidya graphics out of this or not.
>>2657482That can actually work if the results are consistent in their uncanniness. Good luck!

>>2657524Good work! A minor suggestion though. Make the secondary shade area on the pink-haired girl's backsprite a bit larger and add a 3'rd shade where the 2nd was. The hair look a bit upleasant, this will give a bit more depth to the sprite.I suck at pixel editing though, but here is my picrel reference anyway.

it's day 1 of the jam, I made the starting area. I'll do the eventing laterAlso came up with the story (set in same universe as my previous jam game but different region). Not really scary but does have some gory parts
Testing out cameras and models right now with placeholders, no real textures yet. Most of the equipment stuff is done. Keeping it very simple, going to be more Horror than Summer focused, 7 quests in which you help people around a hub town with various locations, going to be finishing the switches and variables for it over the weekend and hopefully have a skeleton game done by Monday for playtesting, then the actual difficult and tedious work of creating custom assets begins. Keeping enemies low this time and not going to make combat required by allowing for a social build, will be first person cause making map sprites is going to suck for the party members.

>>2659834Misnamed "torque" as "ogre". I need my meds...
>>2659834I couldn't figure out how to make klonoa like game with it so it's trash.
>>2657134To start, it's worth clarifying that mediums have different genres with the same name. An Adventure Film is not the same thing as an Adventure Novel, or even an Adventure Game. Films are concerned with visuals. Novels are concerned with narratives. And Games are concerned with gameplay. The pattern of gameplay in a survival-horror game is resource anxiety. There will never be enough ammo. The game will spawn more, but only when you're very low or completely out. It's a psychological trick to make you think you'll be helpless, and you're just running from the inevitable. In contrast, the narrative structure of a Horror Novel also revolves the feeling of not being in control. H.P.Lovecraft's novels aren't particularly scary. It's just that nobody is safe from the cosmic horror. There is no escape. A character is being chase. They see an open window and think "I can escape through there!">but it wasn't a window. or maybe it is>but it didn't lead outsideor maybe it did>but they were a ghost reliving the past. Sometimes they manage to avoid the part where they die. But the present-future state of the world outside is much scarier, they always choose to go back.
>>2660293>the narrative structure of a Horror Novel also revolves the feeling of not being in control.I still wonder why people always devolve this into "Diablo Ex Machina" and instant "the end", like "Rocks Fall - Everyone Dies" is a mandatory necessity to make your story a """HORROR""" one.
>>2660410Because that's a genre. A collective. If you constructed a story any differently, it has no business standing in the same circle with the others. It's not part of the collective. Duh. It's not a person. You're not going to hurt it's feelings by excluding it. It's not going to experience genre dysphoria and seek reassignment because it has an autistic relationship with words and demand that you respect their learning disability and associative vocabulary.

>>2663137Trust me, after you've read the sheer number of ero LNs as I have, the fine line between hot as fuck and ultra cringe becomes so painfully visible that it's easy to walk along either side. I'm truly retarded, I'm unable to add new music to RPGmaker 2k. I thought I would only add one song (Welcome to Dying from Blind Guardian) to the song list in the RTP music folder but it doesn't show up. I converted the file which was at first a MP4 to .VLC because it looked like it was that kind of format for the RTP song file lists, but it ain't showing up.

>>2663414it's okay anon, you can prevent this (and accidentally running exes) by enabling file extensions, which are turned off default in windows 10. it's baffling why microcock decided to cripple their operating systems but here we are...if you want to run midi files outside of rpgmaker, to hear/test them, i like to use a program called foobar2000. there's a plug-in for it that adds something called fluidsynth, i think it's called, and then you need a soundfont file (this tells the computer the instrument sounds used in midi which is extremely variable). midi is actually just sheet music, really.https://www.woolyss.com/chipmusic-soundfonts.phphere's a website with some cool soundfonts. there's also gm.sf2 which is the general midi (i think it's called that) used by windows which sounds closest to rpgmaker, if you're using this to test midi songs.

>>2657116So is RPG Maker MV still not worth using? When I bought it at launch the map editing lagged and BGM triggers in events or when first entering a map would take a few seconds to load ruining the possibility of using music for dramatic effect in dialog or cutscenes.I also recall people saying there was a bad memory leak issue.Have these been fixed or is VX Ace still king?
>>2663959Such shit always comes up regardles of what version it is. In the end, you're always making your game around what engine wants rather than you want, in RPGMakers' case especially. Just get one that has more guides (VX, or ,hell, 2003).If I remember correctly, people solved that one by pre-loading music in-between scene transitions and putting the music on pause until needed. Or am I confusing things?
>>2663993MV just seemed appealing because I'm mostly inspired by handheld RPGs, and would like to release one on both PC and phone if I went all the way with it for a few years. But I don't want to go through hoops to make basic things like music function. I'll stick to VX Ace or wait and see how the new Unity-based one turns out.
Speakin of plugins, anyone know a plugin for MZ that makes your combat like in Black Souls? Meaning that each enemy and you have a bar that fills based on your AGI (I think?), effectively removing turns from the combat and replacing them with "actor speed"?
WTF is MZ? Is there an even newer release than MV I never heard about?
>>2657116Finished Quest events today and testing the Quest Journal. Now it's time to make the skeleton of the game and some test models for the city. Doing the art is going to fucking suck so I'll have to rush that shit.
>>2663453I've been working on this menu for the most part, because that's what the player is going to be staring at the most unless they don't care about unlocking everything. Trying to knock it out before getting to the real fun stuff like creating environments and cut scenes for miss rabbit girl.I'm going to put way more dolls in than needed to unlock everything, because I'm going to lock some behind puzzles and looking at some of the puzzles in my old games I can only think "how was anyone supposed to understand this"However maximum health will probably be locked behind 150 dolls. Also trying to make each era of pages represent a different state of mind with little things.

You can make some pretty neat scenery with these AIs. Now the problem is, what kind of a game can I even make with stuff like this? Only really v*sual n*vels and point'n'click adventures. The problem with the latter is that you'd need a sprite for the MC with full animations and also sprites with some animation for all the NPCs, which is probably outside the capability of this.

But there are plenty of other options to explore, still.
I want to make a minimalist game without using plugins but I'm scared that it'll be too boring for people.
>>2663253It's ok I'm glad you at least tried it>>2663266I will try if I have time
>>2665200>If full movement sprites are not an option, it goes without saying that anything with full 3d models are out as well. You can alway pull off what "Demon Turf" did and use 2D spriteset positionally attached to the moving 3D point. Very easy to pull off technically. IDK what you're using as the engine, though.
>>2665247Focus on the story then. Or you can always play around with what you have and make, for example, magic unreplenishable or attacks limited (for that survival horror experience).Don't bother about that too much. I've seen Yume Nikki and it's clones have instant transitions into other areas, as in, no fade in/out, you step on a tile and you're instantly in another map.How do I do that? Using MV.
>>2666622Very simple. Create the transfer event as usual, then make sure "Fade" is set to None
>>2666622It's a pretty high level technique that requires at least 5 years of programming experience and installing 10 plugins but you can actually just make a huge map and make different parts of it look completely different.

>>2666172>>2666466Thanks for the motivation, anons. I'm gonna try harder and see how far I get this time.
Current progress on the battle system. No animations currently but I'll have to add some later.
I think my idea may have grown beyond RPG Maker but I'm afraid I'm too much of a codelet for ever Godot/Game Maker
>>2666768It really depends on what your idea is and how to do it, especially the latter.
>>2666776Basically my idea was to take a traditional turn based RPG and push into management/sim a bit. Basically, you'd have a faction and the enemy would have a faction. I'd divide the map into zones that a faction would control. You'd have to hire and recruit troops to fill those patrols. Certain zones could have benefits like resource (money) generation or unique units. Each unit would have an attack or defense value which exits not in the traditional battle scene but from a strategy point of view that determines how "grand" battles would play out. For example, a zone would a total defense score of 100 would repel an attack of 80
>>2666749Looking based looking sexy
>>2666768If you can do something in rpg maker you can also do it in godot, it's just harder, the fundamentals are the same, you just have to do a lot of catch up and build most of your tools from scratch.Jams are pretty good for getting experience in this kind of thing, but it took me a few jams to be able to make something you could already do with base rpg maker. This is also my opinion, but coding is easier than drawing and way easier than making music, it just looks scary.
>>2666613The first thing that comes to my mind now are Safe Rooms in Resident Evil and Obscure. Of course, you can add your own personal idea.>>2666711I hope you succeed on that. >>2666801>What you mentioned later sounds easier to do in RPGMReally? I thought it'd be the opposite. I thought RPGM was only for old school JRPG clones

What are the best programs for making sprites? I want something simple and lightweight, I don't need a lot of fancy features. Just something a little bit more specialized.Like MS Paint with transparency, and maybe the ability to swap between frames for working on the walk animations etc. of character templates.
>>2666815So what power does RPGM have really?

>>2666838Aseprite. Seriously, though it's suitable for professionals, it's also great if you just want to play aroun, as layering and animating is very straightforward.
>>2666838>Like MS Paint with transparencyPerhaps Paint.Net? It has transparency and layers but still basic Paint. Why is it so fucking hard to make sprites and tilesets god damn. I can draw normal art just fine but pixels don't work in my brain. I have the vague image of what I want in my head but when I try to draw it it just comes off like some mid-2000s teen girl Inuyasha fansite sprites. How did the old 8-bit and 16-bit masters do it? How did they wrap their heads around making a sprite that accurately represents what they want it to without looking dumb and soulless? How did they know which tiny little assortments of pixels would show the player what needed to be seen? It feels like everything was masterfully put in the exact place it needed to be, not a single pixel wasted, but when I try to do it I can't stop thinking with my traditional art mindset.Letting go of my instincts and notions of detail and clarity is so hard, like forcing yourself to walk into traffic.I wish I knew where to look for guidance.
>>2671340pixel art is an artform unto itself that is significantly harder than anyone would ever guess, since generally every single pixel placed causes a significant difference in the final look of the work. it's just something you have to practice a lot.
>>2671340go from big shapes to the pixel artinstead of 'un-detailing' a detalied artthat pic in particuar is strong due to the triangle/b shape, that's why it's so legible

>>2671712You decide the point and for however long it will last (months/years/decades/centuries). It doesn't have to be a perfect solution. Few things in history are, but that doesn't mean it's not worth divulging into. Actions have results on the world and those results will be recorded and remembered by those who live in it. To them, the difference always matters. They'll remember if it succeeded or failed.

>>2671496You do learn when you use someone's assets. You learn to make the game. Video games are games first, unless you're making a visual novel/walking sim. It's okay if you are, I'm not against those, but I assume you want a really awesome RPG as your project. If so, gameplay comes first. Make shitty early 2000s geocities dbz shrine-looking sprites if you want and just make a game you like (lots of people enjoy the soul behind effort rather than the product). Figure out if the game ideas in your head actually translate to a computer and are fun. Then worry about assets. I have no guides for pixel art because I'm pretty bad at them too but I don't care. Assets are practically the least important aspect to me and I know lots of others feel them same way. If you don't, why even make pixel art? 99% of normalfags want cutting edge, billion dollar budget 3D graphics. Default RTP is fine, even, lots of cool games have been made in jams with them. I remember a full-length RPG using them that I played years ago, Last Dream I believe, and it was pretty good because the game was fun.Sorry for the rant, anon, but the only advice I can offer is try the Nintendo method. I saw a documentary of the making of Super Mario Bros and it showed how all the sprites would be hand-drawn on big graph paper things before even going into a computer. They had concept art, then shrunk the concept art down, then "translated" that to the sprite, pixel by pixel. Even then, color and shadow seem to be far more important than normal art, making those extra details appear.

You must be really proud of your ignorance. You humans never cease to amaze me with your ability to draw strength from ignorance. Back to /pol/ with you.>4chinz having a cohesive opinionTo be fair, the implication is correct. If you go on dev threads on /v/ or /vg/ or /tg/, they do understand that games are about mechanics first. The storyfag infestation at this point is mainly concentrated on /vrpg/. Which I think I can understand, given how JRPGs generally are.>And the RPGMaker community thinks story is just the text and dialogue.Okay? Sure, characters are a part of it too. And some stories even incorporate the mystical concept of ~themes~. But I don't think you're talking about those, so I'm assuming you mean something like narrative design. You still need to have a game first for that too.

It's obvious, in restrospect.>mechanics firstwrong, like your mother for not having an abortion. Hell, this mechanics vs story discussion is for retarded ngmis by retarded ngmis.>~themes~don't play coy, you sub-70 IQ creature. Story encompasses all: dialogue, text, character, themes, visuals, gameplay, music. Every single element of a game is part of the story it wants to transmit to the player, it might be just "ain't it comfy and fun to jump platforms" or "kill demons. kill a ton of demons." or something as complex as a commentary on why human biology prevents us from finding meaning and purpose due to the automatic formation of social and economical structures. As long as every element helps carry meaning appropiately, it will be a good game. And now, I go back to what you never will do: maeking gaem.
>>2674562>You humans never cease to amaze me with your ability to draw strength from ignoranceAs opposed to... what? What are you, anon? Are you a half-elf like Mithos, because you sound like him (whiny too). Fucking Desians, man, ruining this board.
why bother, nobody will download my game anyway
>>2674582>those are very little words for so much retardation.Right back at you. You came off as completely delusional and insecure in your first response.>Stones and glass houses, faggot. You may be right. My first response was too strong, but it's too late to go back now.>Oblique reference to Carmack who made it farther than any of us, and later recanted his comments on story. And? I'm aware of that story. You think that's enough to sidestep everyone and everything else? The words he used are not even the same that I did. But now that it seems to work for you I guess we're taking into account the spirit of the argument.>Awareness, more like. Academics circlejerking while producing no results is an age-old ailment.Yes, seeing ignorance as awareness is a classic /pol/ trait.>as long as you go back to the crab bucket.I've visited /junior high general/ like three times. It was enough to notice that they do understand the point I'm trying to make.>Oh, you're one of those retards. It's obvious, in restrospect. What is that exactly? I don't know the inference you're making here. I do know it's a trigger word though. For what? Please educate me.>Hell, this mechanics vs story discussion is for retarded ngmis by retarded ngmis. It's not actually meant to be a discussion. Merely a reminder that this is not the recommended way of doing things.>Story encompasses all: dialogue, text, character, themes, visuals, gameplay, music.Maybe you should've just lead with that, because as clear as it is to both of us, you're using a non-standard definition for the word. I'd say the first thing you should do is decide what the aesthetic you wish to impart on the player is. Since I'm not autistic like you I don't do this because I know I can't expect everyone to automatically understand all that it encompasses. But technically it's the same thing as your "story encompasses all". >And now, I go back to what you never will do: maeking gaem.Dream on, waste of oxygen.
>>2674603You're a mental dwarf that thinks printing words on paper makes them true. The Arts on academia are cesspool that for every academic trying to help others make better art there's three of your kind trying to stroke their ego and make money putting their babby tier understandings on a book and keeping the circlejerk going. There's a reason why game design graduates end up becoming Youtube essayists instead of gamedevs. And much like ten miles on the road will teach you more about life than a thousand books, making a single 15-minute game will teach you more about gamedev than entire courses. With that said. You insincere cunt, you're the one that started with the strawman that thinking up a story first is bad. And your everyone else is a brood of retards with credentials every anon here can match and surpass. You using storyfag as a prejorative is what revealed you as just another crab in the bucket. No shit that there's people that prefer a narrative focus in one of the genres the plays best to that, furthermore dismissing JRPGs mechanically while WRPGs keep employing shitty action mechanics and CRPGs are still copying from tabletop is the summit of hypocresy. Also, your point is like saying the sky is blue. We all know, and you aren't clever for pointing it out. Of course a game needs mechanics to function, even a walking simulator needs the player to be able to move, and a VN needs to display images and text. And yes, I am an autist, an assburger, in fact. Comes with the terrain, you doddering pseud. Spend less energy being smarmy on the internet and do something productive, though you're probably so addicted to being smug on social media you are unable to.>Dream on, you waste of oxygen.Don't need to, it's already a reality. Now I'm gonna go touch grass, I'll let you have the last word.
>>2674635>And your everyone else is a brood of retards with credentials every anon here can match and surpass.I'm literally one of those anons lmao. I guess I'm surpassing myself now, always a good thing. But I've also read books and what the industry veterans have said. Oh noo, I broke the covenant. You should stop projecting your perception of certain words on everyone else, anon, it's the source of all this grief. Peace. I wish we could've had a chat outside of this site. Maybe we will.>Spend less energy being smarmy on the internetBut it's fun, you sperg.
>>2674562you might or might not be wrong but you responded in such a holier than thou manner that I must automatically oppose whatever you just said
I'm torn as to whether to make my game a light hearted adventure or to make it more grounded and dark like FFT
>>2674665I can see what you mean. Yet in my opinion that behavior was vindicated just a few replies later. But I see myself becoming like a bully again. I need to get off this site. I'm gonna go "touch grass" like that other anon, since it's what the cool kids do.
>>2674654>But I've also read books and heard what industry veterans have to saySo has everyone, with the difference of not blindly trusting those words. You know, I'm going to stop with the insults and tell you why people tell you to eat shit and ignore your advice. You're operating on the ivory tower of intellectuallism. You equate human knowledge with human value, and as you possess a shitton of knowledge, you must possess a shitton of value. And as you are a valuable human, your words must be gifts from the sky to the subhumans dwelling below your intelectual heights. It doesn't work like that. Knowledge is a thing that only has contextual value, and that value is in itself subjective, so you're as much as a filthy unwashed human ape as the average /pol/oid, the guy that's going to solve one of the millennium problems, and the rest of us.People shit on you not because they disagree or because they're dumb, they shit on you because they know you think they're idiots. And they probably aren't.And I've gotten baited into another spergpost, fuck.
Reminder this is the jam thread
Got most of my database done and am now playtesting. Probably the biggest issue with my game last time was not playtesting it rigorously. Focusing on art and not the game beforehand was my first mistake so now I'm building the game first then the art assets. How is everybody else doing so far?
People should be forced to post their games before they engage in conversations like that
what's the best version of RPGM? thinking about getting into it, however my only strength is I'm pretty good at writing music so I could make a little rpg with a good soundtrack maybe and hopefully a cool plot

>>2657116Does anyone have any plugins for MV or MZ that act as quest logs of sorts? I tried using VisuMZ's, but my problem is that it does not let me add pieces of text to the description, I can only rewrite it completely. In my game, the process through which you obtain hints or produce findings is not always linear, meaning that I'd have to write x! (factorial) different descriptions per quest, one permutation for each variant. There must be an easier way to do this.
>>2675749On pc it came out a few days ago, it has a horrible price but I was going to pirate it anyway.
My PC broke, so now I have an excuse to not finish the jam.

I'm finishing no matter what, thank god I can use "it takes place in a mentally ill woman's diary" as an excuse for any writing problems

Slowly coming together now. Keeping assets pretty simplistic, trying to go for something similar to Dark Spire with a flat basic color and lots of black.

Not gonna lie I fell for the AI meme and bought a novelai sub to help me write dialogue.Wonder if anyone will notice when playing my game.
>>2657116>AI generated ideas>AI generated art>AI generated maps>AI generated dialogueAI generated events when? And people say robots will need to keep us araund for our creativity lmao.
>>2679185Made rabbit animations today and worked on story stuff I can't spoil. Next jam I'm going to make an Vanlen game again because I don't want to have to make new player sprites outside of updating old ones so they look better. It gets a little tedious having to create so many assets so I'm just going to be taking old music and monsters I made and using them for the battles so I can work on making the game fun. Also, I was thinking of allowing the player to play Caroline's stories in any order, because the game takes place in a diary so you can just flip between them. However the player starts off with only one health that is upped by collecting stuff so the later levels might not be fun with that.
>>2679372>I was thinking of allowing the player to play Caroline's stories in any orderThe thing to consider is always "does this add something to the game" IMO. The player can be given that option, and it might not be hard to do, but if all it does is make the game harder to play and the story more confusing, it might be better to make things linear.
>>2679349OpenAI can already write functioning code for multiple languages. Also 99% of ai generated ideas are just reskinned already existing games so human ideas are still in demand.
>>2679349>>2679404AI will only ever "replace" what people find unfulfilling. It's sorta like how the lot of anons in these threads are using something that completely takes away the burden of having to code. However, some still prefer to make their own engines anyways. AI only gives options to those who are lacking in a certain area.
