I started playing Liberty Step. If ASYLUM is hakika's Dark Souls, then this is his Demon's Souls. Though it really does remind me of Etrian Odyssey in a lot of ways. You make your own party so there's no party banter at all, just quiet exploration. You have 8 party members, with 4 in the backline that all get EXP at the same time. You can pull your backline party members out of your ass if you're running low on SP. Big areas with branching paths, just like ASYLUM. Transfer swords are very sparse though, so you will have to backtrack. There's no teleporting back to base for free either, you have to buy expensive consumable items to do that (think Homeward Bones from Dark Souls). There's very little reason to spend money on equipment either. Enemies drop lootboxes that you bring back to back and get new gear with Diablo-style prefixes attached to them. Say +5% all stats for example. In addition, all the materials you get from monsters and gathering points can be applied to equipment and give you all sorts of stat bonuses, or even element resistances or HP regen. It's pretty neat but it was overwhelming at first.Finally, it's pretty fucking difficult.

A lot of it is just exploring around big areas, much like ASYLUM. You'll find landmarks and bosses, which give you observational power and insight (観察力 and 洞察力). These two stats are required to interact with some things around the world, and also required to access the final area. You access new areas by literally finding out the name of the area and then inputting it at a name entry box in a train station. Characters with quest lines will give you these area names, like ワイルドキープ or フラジェルム.I think ASYLUM handled it better though. I dunno, it just felt really damn aimless. There's basically no story to it, and what little story that is there is cryptic as fuck. The postgame areas will probably answer my questions. Rifar and Arknoah are here for sidequests which is neat. I only partially did Rifar's questline though.The equipment lootbox system is cool since there's a lot of variety with the prefixes, though you can savescum for whatever you want if you have a hoard of lootboxes. Equipment modding is cool too since all the items you get from enemies, bosses and gathering spots can all go towards making you stronger. But what sucks is that you're seriously stuck with the first 8 party members you create. For example, I just happened to never create a Hunter when I first started the game since I chose to start with two Magicians, and guess what, I literally can just never have a Hunter in this playthrough since you can't make more than 8 characters. It's weird as fuck to have something like that for a game with so much customization available. If there is some way to change classes, then I haven't found it yet. I guess the only saving grace is that there are 8 classes, so you could just use one character slot per class, but eh.This is far from my favorite of hakika's old games. Ghost Path 2 and Silver Tower were my favorites.
