What games do you remember to be different than they were when you replayed them?
>>
honestly, probably most of them. arcade games especially, since I never went to the arcade regularly and happened to remember the games differently even when I went to school the next day. I remember double dragon as more violent, with blood and no slowdown when I was telling my friends about it
>>
>>9934339
This, though mostly because you didn't play that shit at home and have time to absorb everything like a home console game.
>>
i remember seeing a thread on /x/ once where somebody posted those books and one of them was actually "stein" instead of stain
>>
i spent my entire life repeating the myth that doom didnt have mouse support
>>
>>9934392
is it possible that it was added in an update / ultimate doom but the original release and or shareware version didnt have it?
>>
There's a game called Caveman Games. It was on the NES and PC. When I was 6, I played it on the Genesis with one of my friends. Many years later, I found out that no such port exists
>>
In the late 90s my mom gave me a copy of sonic and knuckles for Christmas. It was a plain cart with no lockon feature. I had it into adulthood when it disappeared from my possessions at some point. Apparently there were no copies of sonic and knuckles without the lockon feature.
>>
>>9934376
That's the Chinese version, you know, like Mikey Mouse and Super Mary Bros.
>>
>>9934217
I don’t remember Zidane having a tail for some reason
>>
>>9934696
That's like when my mom bought me Golden Axe III for the Genesis, but if you check now they say it never got released in the USA. But I did have it and it was an American release. My mother had no knowledge of how to get Japanese imports back then, and I just wanted American carts/CDs.

None because I'm not a fucking autistic aspergers retard who believes in this "mandela" garbage. Try having a triple digit IQ.

It may be a bootleg cart. They didn't have lock on

> be me
> a 3rd worlder
> read about "lock-on" feature in a cheat code book
> it only have a vague description like "connect two cartridges and get extra features"
> have no idea what is this sorcery
> trying to lock two Sega cartridges by pushing them against each other
>>
Kazaam on sega genesis
>>
>>9935278
It was released on sega channel in the US, you sure it wasn't just that you played it on that?
>>
>>9934217
Only one that stands out to me is the N64 version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. My friend rented a lot of Blockbuster games and we both have the same memory of playing this when he rented it for his n64, problem is, it never came out on the 64. I had memories of the game identical to how it plays, even remembered the noises the Whos make in it. For years i searched for the 64 version, thinking maybe it was a Blockbuster exclusive, but nope, it just never existed at all for it. In fact my friend was even confused when i told him it didn't exist.

I admit it had me fooled up until "Dinkleborg Dogs get an Colonoscopy." I thought that I had lived long enough to see the day that the demon of capitalism had finally suffused its ethos so thoroughly into our society it was appropriating a parapsychological phenomena into children's literature.

That was a great game. There just aren't enough games where you play as a bastard with your own lair and gadgets you cause trouble in towns with.
>>
there was a wolfman you could recruit into your party in FFIII/FF6. i remember watching my cousin playing the game with him as an added character into it from the official rom. ended up playing the game years later recognising the same wolf but even more confused when you couldn't add him to your party. looked up online to see maybe my cousin was playing a romhack or something.
cousin doesn't remember it, and no romhack ever existed of a wolfman ever being in your party.

My bro. How can you not know the game it was in at least if you're so sure?

there are a few games I played with a shitty PC a few years ago at 70-80% speed and now with a decent PC at full speed they seem like different games altogether
>>
>>9937332
no, it was definitely ff6/ffiii. i know bof from a glance, same the other way. lastly, i recall him being the very last member in your party that you could recruit when he was navigating the screen too. i dont ever remember seeing Gogo, strangely.
>>
Only somewhat related to /vr/ but as a kid my family went on a cruise, this was in early 1995 and there I made a friend who we talked gaming and cartoons. He one day told me he had played a computer game called "who killed Mr. Burns?" and that it was a fun game and in the end the killer was Maggie who sot Mr. Burns. Months later was the premier of the episode who shot Mr Burns part 1 and when Part 2 came out I realized my friend had been correct. I just assumed there was a PC game I didn't know about but thanks to the internet years later I realized that game does not exist. How the hell did he know, how did he make it all up and was right? wtf

This is gonna sound weird but I have this vague dreamlike memory of a character, and that character is actually three different ones, but at one point in my mind they were all the same character

Knuckles the echidna
Ecco the dolphin, specifically from the box art of the second game
And Malcho from Aladdin the animated series

There were 1 or 2 misprints iirc, where the publisher fucked up. Probably assuming that the "a" was wrong.
The world was a lot less certain before the internet, and now instead of being correctly uncertain on average we;re incorrectly certain on average.
Or CERN collapsed entangled probabilities and shifted collective consciousnesses into different timelines where only inconsequential bullshit has changed. What the fuck do I know.
Nothing.

Back in the day you could also rent consoles. It's how I played RE2 with my dad. We didn't own a PS1 at the time, but I bet if I asked him he probably wouldn't remember renting the console for that game.
Just a thought.

>>
>>9937598
Only thing I can think of is that your memory is off and that Part 1 was already out. Maggie being the shooter was a common theory and maybe there was some sort of primitive internet fangame that your friend played where that was the solution.

From what I remember, he doesn't mean modern mouseLOOK with KB+M controls, but that the mouse was used in place of the keyboard. E.G. moving the mouse up makes you move forward as if you were pressing the arrow key. It was a very shitty way to play that I bet almost nobody used.

>>9934696
Could it be possible you just never flipped the cover open and assumed it had no lock-on because you didn't see the connector?

>>9935310
I love how the label on that bootleg shows a legit Sonic & Knuckles cart locking-on to another cart. I think that's Sonic 2?

I remember I didn't watch Simpsons at the time but overhearing people saying they think it was the baby. I had no idea what they were talking about at the time. Maybe several people had guessed it right after all? ... .or maybe my memory is off and that talk was after part 2.

Sounds like Stephen Kings only foray in to scifi. Essentially part of the plot is that evil in other worlds can be detected in ours like Thomas the train. He just looks off, because he’s based of an AI train that murders people in another world.
>>

Lol I meant fantasy… all Stephen does is scifi my bad.

I played the American version of Sunshine as a kid, and I could have sworn it used to say shine get! when you got a sprite. Now I read that the Japanese version was like that, but I obviously didn’t play the Japanese version. Where the fuck did that memory come from?
>>
>>9939147
I've heard many in the English speaking sphere say it was a thing, and "X GET!" was a meme, so I'm thinking it was early English copies that had the line, and it got corrected in revisions.
Perhaps it was promotional material?
>>
When I was a kid I always thought Nintendo won the console wars of the 90s, but looking through magazine scans, news articles, talking to people it's like SEGA won and did what Nintendon't. WHat the fuck happened? Was it all a dream? How did Mario lose to a blue hedgehog that is faster than light with a cool attitude
>>
>>9934217
You know how in Mega Man Legends 2 almost every NPC has an unique model?
I distinctively remember there being a cat eared NPC that was among those saved when you clear forbidden island.
She would stand in front of the grave where now there is a very weird female Npc with the Tumblr combo of dark skin and candy blue hair.
Anyone else remembers this? Or at least doesn't recognize the NPC that is there now?

I have a crystal clear memory that strangely my sister shares that before we got OoT for ourselves we played it at our cousins place. The wooden gate in Zora's Fountain was gone and there was a little more to explore past that.

I remember the first time I emulated OoT and had access to moon jump since we never had a Gameshark type device back in the day I was legitimately surprised the collision just ends and there's nothing past the gate.
>>
>>9939330
IIRC there was never a version outside Japan that had the "get", but it was memed heavily, so you might have just blended your memories of playing it with memories of the meme.
>>
In REmake, I remember there being an item in a lab coat on a coat rack. I tried every coat and they had no items.

On the way to the Great Fairy there's a hidden hole with a passageway to a lookout with a Gold Skulltula. You and your sister probably played 1.0 where Link clings to the ledges as he falls and this disorientation got you confused enough to fabricate this memory.

around 2000 i played Rayman 2 at the supermarket booth, later when i played the PC version i was surprised to find the level i played wasn't there, though once i got the internet i've learned that there's a lot of differences between the console releases

the thing is, over the years i played every single version of R2 and i couldn't find the level i've played back then. it started with a long water slide into a larger Fairy Glade-type area with underwater parts to explore.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hn_UYduONuA

eventually i found this production footage, the level at the start is exactly what i've played. how the fuck did an early development demo end up in a mall? too bad i was too young to remember more details

I remember in 1999 during the release of Sonic Adventure I played a demo version in Wal-Mart. The demo was the first stage Emerald Coast. It started normally but had AMY at the beginning near the hotel on the right at the beginning of the stage.
I specifically remember saying outloud "Oh its Sonics girlfriend!" when talking to her. I was 11 at the time of this btw.
She explained the gameplay (A to jump, B to dash, etc...) and I moved on with playing the demo.
Ever since then I have never been able to find a person or demo to prove this existed. I don't know how I could have imaged this because I did not have a Dreamcast until many years later, 2004, as a gift from a friend in High School. So how I would have had had this memory of Amy that doesn't exist I have no idea.

The localizers later explained that the title was supposed to be a combination of "Shogun" and "Showdown", which is why there's no W. It was just obtuse so most people never made the connection.
>>
>>9942713
Wasn’t it specifically supposed to be titled Shogun Shodown and then they changed Shogun to Samurai without correcting the spelling in Showdown? Had the original title stuck the wordplay would’ve been far more obvious.
>>
>>9939147
I know the answer to this one. Hype was strong for Sunshine among the Nintendo fan circles/forums/chats at the time and everyone kept talking about Shine Get and used it as early memes. When the game came out and fans saw that it didn't have the phrase and it had been corrected, well somewhat so it wouldn't be gramatically incorrect. Fans were upset including me but people just end up forgetting and moved on but yeah it was a big deal. you were likely in those communities or just remember it from a magazine, I'm sure the screenshot of the phrase was in previews from EGM/Nintendo Power/GameFan etc.
>>
I was probably 8 or 9 years old when Super Mario 64 came out. I went to a friend’s house who had a neighbor down the street that just got a Nintendo 64. We decided to head over there and while he was showing us the game, I swear I saw 2 goombas fucking each other.

I'd call this somewhat of a reverse because it ended up being a real change. Had sold my original copy of OoT and got another a few years later.

I remembered the Fire Temple music quite vividly then was confused when I got there it was different than remembered. Then found out the whole deal with revisions and the change of music and such. My original copy must have been a later revision while my later copy was the original.

Also had not realized as a kid about cartidge game revisions existing.

The Sega Master System version of Rambo has a different cover art than I remember. He was shirtless holding a bazooka before. Now he's wearing a green shirt with a gun merged with a bazooka. It's very bizarre. But that's not all...

The title to "House Of The Dead" has now changed into "The House Of The Dead".

Then of course the final thing I've noticed is the title of "Robocop Vs Terminator" has changed into Robocop Vs The Terminator". The font for "the" is so small, it's barely noticeable.

The Mandela effect isn't real, it's always a case of people remembering things wrong because the way they remember it makes a lot of sense, even if it was never canon.
People believed Pikachu's tail has a black tip because that way it would match his black-tipped ears.
People thought the Berenstain Bears were called Berenstein because -stein is a very common ending to many Germanic names unlike -stain.
People thought the Monopoly man had a monocle cause, I mean, look at him. It suits him perfectly.
>but I actually have a copy of this thing where it really is the way I remember it!
That just means that some artist made a mistake cause he was also suffering from the same misconception that you were suffering from.
Again, it's not unlikely that someone would screw up and think that Pikachu's tail had a black tip, so it could have made its way into official merch at some point.
