Most used party? Best ending? Best music? MM thread
Dave-Razor-Bernard is by far the best combination.
I do it because I love you.

>>9929418my uncle had this on c64, i was so blown away by how cool it was but it also scared the shit out of me when the cutscenes would happen and the family would move around the house lol
>>9929429pretty much, every single guide I've seen on the game including Nintendo Power basically tells you to use this team if its your first time playing. The Fighter/Monk/White Mage/Black Mage of Maniac Mansion.
>>9929418>Best Music?Razor, by far.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxcBg6ki3rY
>>9929418>Best ending?the combo Meteor Police/Meteor gets a publishing contract one for that twist ending
is there a reason to NOT play the NES version on scummvm today?>>9929617always thought it was cute how it had the punk girl singing in there
>>9929515This podcast has an interview with David Fox, who is responsible for putting this into the game at LucasFilm Games. >>9929418If you are into the history of Maniac Mansion, check out neohabitat.org it's the MMO that was the basis of the Maniac Mansion visual engine, if you can believe that.
>>9929652Duh.... I forgot to post the LINK to the David Fox podcast.... I am stupid. Here it is:https://art19.com/shows/the-madecast/episodes/3b4f89cf-0be9-41c5-bf90-6ff555473681
>>9929642yea, play it on an nes emulator insteadhttps://www.romhacking.net/hacks/7784/
>>9929642>is there a reason to NOT play the NES version- censored (but can be undone with a patch- no mouse to move cursor (i believe SCUMMVM allows you to use a PC mouse with this, also there's a rom patch that adds mouse support via a modified SNES mouse)- additional music from the original that destroys the ambiance of quietly trudging through a decrepit mansion (can be turned off at anytime so not really an issue)
>>9929678maniac mansion deluxe is the best way to play it
>>9929720Best part about this version other than the smooth movement and nice art is you can save replays and play them back.
>>9929720For me, it's NES version with mouse support through ScummVM
>>9929831>fan remake>best versionlol did they really rip music from Day of the Tentacle and shoehorn it into the original game?
>>9930172I just learned that the DotT-style remake is actually still in active development holy shit I thought they had bailed on it years ago
>>9930186link?
Did you know they actually finished Meteor Mess last year? It's abysmal.https://www.meteormess.de/
game needs more love, eurobros, take my energy
It's shocking how solid and even sophisticated this game is relative to its place across the evolution of the genre. Like, MM feels like a casual entry in an already established framework, and not at all like an early implementation of the visual-command-sentence-building concept that would remain the same for years before its first big transformation (except for minor aspects like the redundant What-Is "verb").In comparison Zak McKracken for example kind of comes across as it could have been an earlier game. I love how ambitious it is and the general concept of the story, but at the same time that ambition and sweeping scope was its downfall, specially from a modern perspective. In comparison Maniac Mansion pulls off to a neat 99% the exact level of detail and complexity in setting and mechanics that the overall gameplay system works best for.
>>9932683>feels like a casual entry in an already established framework, and not at all like an early implementationOther games with this feel? Gonna throw picrel in there. Sure, AitD existed but it was a pretty poor implementation of the formula and it's not as if MM was the very first of its kind either.
>>9929418>Best music?Michael > Dave > Title > Edisons > Razor > the rest
>>9932881both RE1 and RE4 defined and established genres
>>9933091RE4 definitely established something around 15 years later for sure
>>9932909>time to compose Michael's music>he's black>funk DMC oughtta do it
>>9933136Maybe you're just one of those people who manage to still arrive at racist stereotypes by going a bit too intently in the opposite direction.
>>9932881That example sounds in fact quite inappropriate. I won't argue RE managed to create a massive mainstream hit out of a framework that had originally been used too loosely to amount to more than a well-regarded novelty, but that said the framework WAS basically a 1:1 carbon copy. They simply focused and streamlined the structure and core elements, which had unarguable merit though not innovation-type merit.
>>9933150Keep your head planted firmly in the sand, anon.
>>9933160That's racist
>>9930186I NEED them to finish this so i can play day of the tentacle immediately after
>>9929418I think I used both Syd and Razor at the same time a lot, because I was an idiot. I also was drawn to Michael because he could develop the filmand Bernard is basically canonI really liked how the NES game had soundtracks for the characters, I used to leave the CD players on all the time but it got annoying when I tried playing recently, and when I tried turning them off they kept turning themselves back on. Is that common in the NTSC version? Doesn't seem to happen on PAL.
>>9929418The character selection basically sets the "difficulty" since the complexity of the possible character-specific endgame solutions varies. I'd say somebody going in blind has the biggest chance to fuck up the requirements and strike a dead end for Razor/Syd or Wendy, and the most accessible solution is comparatively Bernard's for sure. Otherwise Jeff is only there as a waste of a backup chance so a Bernard/Michael "party" would maximize the chances for a novice player.Anyway, my favorite ending is probably Wendy's ending but calling down the Meteor Police with Bernard to arrest him during the Talk Show.
>>9929418Maniac mansion 2 deserved an official Amiga release.
>>9933703That's harsh, why?
>>9933759>being available on the ECS Amigas >a punishmentWTF!?
>>9933673best ending
>>9933759Kek
>>9933673This art is great
>>9929418Love Maniac Mansion but could never get into any other "graphic adventure" game
>>9929418They should have made a Maniac Mansion movie but every time you watch you get different characters in it. Like how Clue movie had various endings depending on what reel the theater used.just do the same thing but with digital it would be easier to randomize it.
>>9937105Clue basically was Maniac Mansion: The Movie
>>9930186holy shit
>>9933574Bernard is canon, and either Syd or Razor (reskins of the same character) is heavily implied to be canon, because they're the only ones who can microwave the hamster.
>>9937094Not even Day of the Tentacle? It's a direct sequel, and better in every way.
>>9937547The art is childish and shitty. Maniac Mansion is superior.
>>9937634It's the classic American cartoon style, which suits the game perfectly.
>>9930218>GermanI’m always amazed by how much Germans love PC adventure games. I guess it’s like Russians and FPS games
>>9937547It's not better in every way. It's better in a lot of ways but it doesn't have>character select>events occurring on a timer, NPCs moving around the mansion, etc>failure states>multiple paths/endingsall of which make Maniac Mansion a really cool experience
>>9937547I'd say it's a wholly different game in every way, even tonally. Though I'd agree it could be considered superior in plenty of ways, specially if you prefer the no-dead-ends later LucasArts model to something with a little more freedom and leeway to fuck up and therefore a potential for higher stakes and engagement.I think MM is an excellent middle ground between the LA "philosophy" and the Sierra approach for example.
>>9937642To be fair to this >>9937634 idiot, the "remaster" did manage to make the original perfectly realized Chuck Jones cartoon-inspired art look legitimately shitty.
>>9932881Super Metroid
