I miss the days when the UI took up 60% of the screen

I fucking love them. Though most of them are quite basic. Know of any with interesting mechanics?
>>
>>9928697
Depends on the blobber type but I usually enjoy getting lost in some for a few hours.
>>9928729
all that stats and info right there in front of me... good stuff
>>
I'm making one. Automap as you go, or have to find/unlock the map?
>>
Good
>>
>>9929940
cartography as a skill/trait
then automap as you go if either A) you invested on cartography when creating your character B) a NPC with that skill joins your party
>>
>>9929980
and if no party member has the cartography skill, the automap can still be unlocked by finding/purchasing maps
>>
i want to play them. i think id like them. Ive lost interest in RPG stories or wandering around open worlds. I just want a hardcore dungeon dive. But I run into a few brickwalls
>1. Most of them are old PC games and are a pain to get running on modern hardware
>2. Clunky interface that is just uncomfortable
>3. visually some of the most hideous pixel design of the era comes from them
>4. i run out of character concepts/ideas after 3-4 of them when i feel ive rounded out my party but most blobber parties are 6 characters or more
>>
>>9929940
Have a memory stat (or lump it into Intelligence). The automap degrades over time, how quickly depends on memory.
>>
>>9928697
Are they still working on Giten's translation?
>>
>>9928697
I like em.
>>
>>9928697
Love em, the genre that truly links eastern and western games.
>>9929940
Difficulty setting, Normal=Automap and Hard=Find Map.
>>9929986
>but most blobber parties are 6 characters or more
You don't have to fill your party in fact there are some games where doing that is a mistake.
>>
>>9928697
Why does this board call them that? Is it a euro thing?
>>
>>9928697
>baiting with retarded ass terminology
Did you mean Dungeon Crawlers?
>>
>>9930427
Nobody calls them that. It is *exactly* one aspergers syndrome anon desperately trying to push it as a meme.

>>
>>9930691
Literally everyone on the codex calls them blobbers.
>>
>>9930687
I'm guessin people started using blobbers when 3rd person hack n slash games started being called dungeon crawlers.
>>
>>9930691
underage b&
>>
>>9931741
Ultima Unreal and King's Field are dungeon crawlers, just not the turn based tile based kind
>>
>>9929940
Automaps are for fags, make the player draw their own.
>>
Blobbers give you a direct connection to your party, a true sense of empathy that isomemetric games cannot provide.
>>
>>9929986
>1. Most of them are old PC games and are a pain to get running on modern hardware
What old PC RPGs can't you run through DOSbox, that don't have a GOG copy available that runs right out of the box?
>>
>>9928697
Fuck you and your shitty revisionist term. Blobber is slang from a shithole, modern website. It's a First Person Dungeon Crawler. Faggot.
>>
>>9929940
I came here to post something like
>>9930342
>Difficulty setting, Normal=Automap and Hard=Find Map.
Ideally make it an option with several values (others have already mentioned cart of gophers). But that takes more effort than just on and off so perhaps start with something simple and extend later.
>>
>>9930691
I've been calling them blobbers for years, fuck off
>>
>>9932168
Not all first person dungeon crawlers are blobbers, baka.
>>
>>9929940
graph paper and pencil, you wretch
>>
>>9929940
My favorite method is something like Sekaijuu no Meikyuu/Etrian Odyssey where you have to draw your own maps, but get to do it in the game itself.
>>
>>9934079
this is ok, but you also miss out on coming up with your own notation for what you find in the dungeon.
for instance, it took me a while to realize what the Wizardy level structure is like.
>>
>>9929940
To add to anon's idea, ideally you'd have two difficulty sliders: one for combat and other for exploration. Having hard fights shouldn't be same as making exploring tedious.
>>
havent decided on mapping options but have decided on two enemy monsters. the blobber and the crawler. they will aggro each other

It's this faggot who shilled it hard for years in any RPG forum that didnt have the decency to ban him.
>claims he didn't invent the term (bullshit)
>cites himself as the first instance of it ever being used
>he is obsessed with the idea of "moving together as a blob of arms and legs" and literally no other living person visualizes RPGs this way
>I wish I could hate him to death
>>
>>9928697
I recently played one without an automap.
It was significantly more fun. Even the retarded section with single tile rooms with doors on all sides and spinners+teleporters.
>>
>>9931432
>>9935272
So, any RPG without "arms or legs" visible on screen isn't in the same genre?

Despite being the same game otherwise?

This is super retarded, it's like grouping the FPS games with full body awareness into their own seperate genre
>>
I enjoy them.
>>
>>9932168
*First person dungeon crawler where you play as a blob.

how do you prevent the player from "optimizing the fun out of the game"?
if you "waste" a party member to cartography, or a skill, or even a limited item slot, a player that wants to do maximum damage will instead pick up a pen and paper and map the dungeon by hand
>>
>>9935870
>how do you prevent the player from "optimizing the fun out of the game"?
You don't.
>>
>>9935351
What about older SSI goldbox games and their buck rogers spinoff rpg? They were first person dungeon crawls when exploring and interacting, but combat was isometric overhead turn based.
Are these “half blobbers”?
It makes my head hurt with these inane 21st century labels.
>>
>>9935980
Not the person you're replying to, but I would say no. A blobber to me means all 4 characters occupy the same space/tile. There is no indication that the first person aspects of those games isn't just the party lead.
>>
>>9936325
The first person view in any of these games is assumed to be the party lead. This is why a “blob” is a ridiculous concept. Each character has a name (and possibly status screen/character sheet in later games) and class, and individually die when killed. A 21st century gamer had trouble visualizing this and invented the blob concept to cope.
>>
>>9935980
I've tried to get into Pool of Radiance many times but always burn out due to the sluggish pace of its micro-intensive combat.
>>
>>9935980
dude, dont even look at Eye of the Beholder on Game Boy Advance
>>
>>9937538
>>9937538
>dude, dont even look at Eye of the Beholder on Game Boy Advance
That's some fun shit, not the Anon you were replying to but man that's a solid game. As is the SNES version.
>>
>>9935870
>a player that wants to do maximum damage will instead pick up a pen and paper and map the dungeon by hand
You say that like it's a bad thing.
>>
>>9935870
The player choice to do that and had full knowledge of the implications. It's entirely their fault.

A real example of stopping the player from optimizing the fun out of the game would preventing him from making a choice that have consequences he could not have been aware of such as the content he has not yet gotten to being boring if he builds effectively. Another example would be punishing the player for an abuse that could not be coded out. In PS2 Nightmare of Druaga there is a harsh death penalty. If you turn the PS2 off and you are inside a dungeon the next time you load the game the goddess will lecture you why you shouldn't reset the game to cheat death. The lecture is purposely long and annoying and she threatens to delete your file if you keep this up.
>>
I have two problems with blobbers.

1. Navigating a maze in severely limited faux 3D is boring.
2. The combat is pokemon tier, the entire challenge lies in figuring out party creation and what items exist that the party can use.
>>
>>9936325
>A blobber to me means all 4 characters occupy the same space/tile.
>all 4 characters
So most "Might & Magic" and "Wizardry" games are not blobbers.
>>
Quit talking like a fag and forcing your meme word and maybe we can have a discussion next time. I won't argue or elaborate.
>>
>>9938210
Or, get this, you could NOT be an autistic retard who takes everything at face value because they lack the mental capacity to extrapolate information. Being fucking dumb is a choice, anon.
>>
>>9938690
So what's the magic number beneath which a first-person dungeon crawler is no longer a "blobber"?
>>
>>9938707
There isn't one, fucknut. 4 is just the most common number so it's the one I used. If you weren't retarded you would have realized this immediately.
>>
>>9938884
So DOOM is a "blobber", right. No, wait, that's not fantasy so it doesn't count. Or because it doesn't have literal dungeons in it. Heretic then. Heretic is a "blobber".
>>
>>9938884
Please kill yourself. Not even joking
>>
>>9938143
