Did anyone else think this game controls like shit the first few times you played it?
>>9751941you mean like every mario game?
I never felt that way at the time but it was also one of my first games. I was just barely old enough to have played it before Super Mario Bros 3 was released. Of course 3 was superior in every way, especially controls.
>>9751941do you mean when it first came out, or after playing better feeling games like SMB3 and SMW?Cause ya it doesnt feel good. I dont think i'd say bad, but definitely not good
>>9751941Yes. Wonder Boy was far better in every way.
No, because it was my first video game. I had nothing to compare it to.
>>9751941yes, this game is obsolete and only played by autistic speedrunners nowadays
Having played SMW first, SMB makes me feel like Mario is heavier both in his acceleration and jumping and it makes me want to press the buttons harder. It's not "shit" though, just different and takes a bit of adjustment.
>>9751941it was good, probably because I hadn't played any other platformers like that at the time, usually they were just a single screen. I definitely noticed the controls Alex Kidd in Miracle World the first time I played it, how slippery it was and how the buttons were back to front
>>9751941No.>>9751987>>9751990>>9752036Weird. SMB3 and SMW controls always felt weird and barely uncomfortable for me compared to SMB ones. Maybe because I played SMB for years until trying the other two for the first time, but idk.
>>9751971So the same game?
>>9751941Yes. And every time after.
>>9751941The first Mario game I played was Donkey Kong, on Colecovision. Super Mario Bros had significantly better controls. I specifically remember thinking, when I first played it, how cool it was that you could change direction in the middle of a jump.Going back years later, after having played Super Mario 2, 3, and World, it did feel rather primitive though.
>people actually agreeI wish I could just leave this board but I'm stuck here forever sadly
>>9752472lotta kids here, you just have to tolerate it
>>9752472>>9752534they agree because modern gaming and even all "retro sidescrollers" control the same. They don't know what it is to come to a new game and having to learn the controls and physics just to engage with the game. So if they have to do that, it's bad.
>>9751941I thought the same but looking at it now I appreciate how there's a learning curve to mario's momentum. I'm too much of a brainlet to properly articulate it but I like the occasion when the basics of a game require enough skill that it can allow for concise, straight forward challenges. At the other end of the spectrum, which isn't necessarily bad just increasingly common, you see a lot of feature creep in order to build a challenge.
>>9752472you're being hysterical. Yes people think smb1 is a little slippery compared to how tight 3 and world control.
>>9751941Anon, I first played it 30 years ago.
>>9751941No that was my first game I ever got
>>9752765>30 years latter little timmy was still incapable of answering a simple yes or no question.
>>9752005Exactly, coming from atari and jumping into nes I had no point of reference other than watching the wizard.
>>9751941The acceleration/deceleration really throws me off.
Possibly best platformer control ever.
>>9751941No, because it's predecessor was Donkey Kong.
>>9751941Controls were a bit stiff, but manageable.
yeah, until I decided to stop being a bitch
>>9754246That is entirely delusional.
>>9751941No, because I originally played it in 1989 when I got my first NES. It was the first platformer I had ever played.
Yes. But you'll learn to love it.>>9752036The momentum and the overall game speed is very slow compared to SMW and SMB3. It is perfect for what it is, but until you learn to take advantage of it, it does feel weird.
>>9752546This is where we're at unfortunately. People treat design like a solved science and get upset when it doesn't fit in their special box. Anything else is outdated and can't be engaged with.
It was like running on IceMario 3Sonic 3Zelda 3Street fighter 3, 3rd strikeAlpha 3Metal slug 3Half life 3Obviously games hit perfection at number 3
>>9751941Super Mario World was my first Mario game.
>>9754546>Half Life 3I was afraid it wouldnt live up to the hype, but it really was a masterpiece.
the only game with flat out bad controls is super mario land 1 because of it being a launch gb game.
>>9754584It was worth the weight
>>9751941Yes, as a kid I had Super Mario All Stars and basically never touched the first one since it felt so sluggish to play compared to 2 and 3. And certainly didn't play fucking Lost Levels either.
Unironically means you're probably a bit stupid. The only people I see struggle with Mario are dumb as a brick, and fail to grasp concepts like inertia.
>>9751941That sounds like the opinion of someone who played a bunch of terrible platformers before playing the exemplar of the genre.
Coming off from SMB3, which was my first Super Mario game, SMB1 felt weird, but not shit. I kept playing it so obviously I didn't think it was shit, but harder.I actually like that all the retro Mario games have their own distinct physics, they play similar, but are not the same, so you have to adjust to each of them, and they're all intuitive and responsive. World is probably the most complex one with all the different things its physics allow (what with being able to throw objects in different angles, jump while crouching, spinjumping, etc, etc), but they're all solid games that people still love today, so nah, I don't think SMB1 controls like shit, it's still a masterpiece.
