How do you guys deal with CRT geometry? My eyes are drawn to inconsistencies like a a fly to shit. Once I notice something off I can't -unsee- it, and I've never seen a CRT with perfect geometryI'm starting to think this isn't for me
>>9745678Took me a couple years to get used to it honestly

>>9745662complete noob here, does the switch output on "small" crt tv's like pic/related or will it have the sides/edges cut off from the screen?
>>9745673>convert rgbWhat's that?
>>9745734RGB stands for " red green blue". Dunno what he means by that....
>>9745738I know, but I don't understand what RGB is meant by here. What is he trying to hook up? SCART? YPbPr? VGA?
>>9745738>>9745734RGB signal to composite anoni have a keene electronic box that can do it but it has a bit of dotcrawl
>>9745678I can ignore stuff like slight curves or weird bends around the edge of the screen so long as the middle is all fine. Personally the only thing I can't ignore is CRT Bloom, my last CRT had it real fucking bad and was pretty much the entire reason I replaced it.
>>9745738>>9745749>>9745750rgb scart
>>9745678Curved crts hide it pretty well. Its pretty much perfect on most crt Monitors aswell so theres that
>>9745662Anyone have any suggestions on a cheap way to make a modern pc play nice with a consumer crt (component) for mame?
>>9745821Downscale with a self-built GBS-C ( + sync combiner or csync from the GPU) or buy a Radeon GPU with an HDMI to component transcoder. Make sure you look online to see if the card can outout 240p through HDMI.
>>9745734A signal you retard.
>>9745678>and I've never seen a CRT with perfect geometryDoesn't exist. Stick with solid-state displays if it bothers you.
>>9745678>I've never seen a CRT with perfect geometryMeanwhile my TrinitronYes, I know the top left corner is a bit off, but it doesn't get any better than this.
>>9745662Bros I think I fucked up, I adjusted the focus on a Syncmaster I got for free but when I put it back together and turned it on it shut down and now it makes a clicking sound
could someone halp meI have this old philips (i think its from the late 80s) i was playing ecco and then the tv just shut it self down but the red light was still on. no smoke no nothingpushing buttons do nothing and the tv doesn't have a remote control.also theres a weird issing sound but i think its just the red lightwhat do bros?(also I have another philips from the 70s but the tv doesnt work at all even tho its in good condition)
>>9745941Check for bad caps in the power supply.
>>9745941Most likely a bad capacitor, will need replacement
>>9745783seeing alot of people post their monitors I feel like I shouldve gotten one instead of a PVM.
>>9745749there's a couple kinds of RGB depending on the sync. Composite sync is H+V, while sync on composite uses the regular yellow plug as sync. Computer monitors usually have the H and V sync separate. Then there's stuff like sync on luma or whatever. Depends on the console.>>9745753scart is never necessary, the proper connector is called BNC
>>9746020You can get a VGA input card for L series PVMs.
>>9745678I can get used to shit if it was stationary. What makes me lose my fucking mind is the image shifting and warping a bit he brighter the image gets. My last 5 Trinitrons were like that to the point I don't even remember if they weren't always like that.Granted, they're all flatscreens, but that's the shit I need because of having both S-video and component.
>>9746030I have a PVM-1341
>>9746031That's due to poor voltage control, which is common in consumer model TVs. Also, you can get curved screen monitors with s-video and component.
>>9746030for L2? it doesn't do HD...
>>9745749Ypbpr is not RGB
>>9746038How hard is it to fix that? I know these monitors exist but they're way too rare to bother with.
>>9746049Yup. You won't be getting HD formats but it does work for all L series monitors:https://www.retroupgrades.co.uk/product/bkm-129x-card/Dreamcast, for example, will look fucking amazing.>>9746078It might be tricky but lowering the screen voltage may correct it slightly. You could also try recapping the power supply but you'll never get rid of the "blooming" effect entirely. That's just something that's inherent to CRTs.
>>9746031Blooming only bothers me for two reasons1) this thing is a bit too far to the left and I can't be arsed to get a remote to fix it, which isn't an issue for DVD playback or Wii, but on PS2 and 360 means you can see the right edge of the screen and say I can load up an Xbox 360 trailer with underscan and watch the edge of the video move around2) The 360 has that super bright guide menu that curves like an absolute bastard around the current menu selectionOh and both TVs I have can't display the FROMSOFTWARE logo without the E stretching out on the bottom. Otherwise I never really notice it and the shitty cheap flat screen static geometry is a lot more of an issue. Graphics shrink when they fade out but you'd be hard pressed to know that's unintentional without comparing side by side.
>>9745706the nintendo switch? it will only output hdmi, with a minimum of 480p, and usually in a 16:9 aspect ratio (apparently you can force it to output 4:3 if you have certain displays, but i'm not sure about the details). on its own, no, the switch will not display on a standard definition 4:3 crt. you would have to downscale hdmi to whatever the tv accepts.
>>9745678I'm too dumb to fix it so I just deal with it, though I think for mine the TV might just be fucked entirelyThis one was in the middle of a stack of storage goods and the casing was cracked in several places, so perhaps too much weight applied on it
ay, sorry for dumb question but just to clear this upI have an european wii whose cable looks like the one circled, and am using an american TVthe image comes out black and white unless I use "force ntsc" but there's no such option for the PS1 emulator as far as I knowif I buy the cable on the left "component" will it work with colour?I asked this a while ago but I forgot sorry

>>9746595Same. Odds are he chickened out. We will never be plasmapilled.
>>9747970>>9746595I wasnt in that convo last thread, but I can give you my perspective as a plasma Owner.Plasma is an inferior technology to CRT for sure, but its nice having a big screen.Motion clarity is alot better then on LCD, but not CRT level.Peak brightness is quite good, all white less so.Blacks are alot better then LCD, slightly worse then a well calibrated crt.Native 1080p is nice for movies and consoles, very low input lag aswell.
>>9746791I have used a two. My past Sony CPD E-200, and my current Dell E771p. Both direct VGA to VGA, no gay conversion. The sony was nice as fuck, but there aren't really huge differences. On paper they exist, but not to a degree where I will be sickened with the dell. Never used a ViewSonic, but people swear by them. I love it over TV CRTs, it's connected to a fucking PC so I get ever benefit possible. I can emulate if I really wanted any game I'd like. And Iainly play retro PC games, especially crpgs. They look like shit in widescreen so a 4:3 or 5:4 display is a must. Go for it anon, we need more monitor chads here.
>>9747990Also ghosting
>>9748024not on my model
>>9747990>Plasma is an inferior technology to CRT for sure, but its nice having a big screen.Context should always be given before making such claims. Inferior in what, exactly? Should the advancements in scalability, geometry, screen uniformity/focus and higher resolutions be ignored just because CRTs have slightly better motion resolution?
>>9746595I am still here, thought the thread would get archived before any replies. I'll record some autistic UFO or moving photo between Plasma and OLED soon.
>>9748131>geometry, screen uniformity/focus and higher resolutionsIs any of this true though? Many CRT monitors have much higher resolution than 1080p, and have more focus, uniformity and convergence adjustment zones than "fake HDR" LCDs have dimming zones, so they're solved problems. Picrel is an older model, some Eizos went up to 256 adjustment zones.
>>9748131And the late Sony Trinitrons generally don't need any sort of uniformity compensation at all, they remain incredibly clean even after tens of thousands of hours.
>>9747284I hate the copper goblins.

>>9748934>i was gonna reply in the last tread to the guy that had a sony trinitron on his passenger seat.I'm still here.>the orange scart socket on sony trinitrons supports rgb scart, the black socket doesnt. It's the other way around, actually. The orange SCART is AV2, with S-Video instead of RGB. The black one is AV1 and it supports RGB.If you look at other Sonys, they often have the AV1 SCART socket in black and the others in orange. It's not universal though, my other Trinitron has both sockets black and only AV1 is RGB. More than one socket with RGB support is pretty rare. Also, I've come across a Sony that had two SCART sockets and strangely RGB didn't work on any of them. I think it was broken though, maybe the CVBS/RGB mode select pin was shorted to ground or something.
Is there a modern graphics card that has outputs for crt displays? Can be TV or monitor CRTs

>>9749524what it means is it's scaled incorrectly
>>9749526And yet it looks smoother and less harsh. Much like a low end low TVL consumer CRT.The raw native res looks good of course but it looks harshJust look at Chrono's faceHow can you possibly say the left(real res) looks better than the right(110% magnified)? The right clearly looks smoother and is closer to what they intended.I'm reminded of a low end slot mask TV

>>9749546Bilinear is too blurry imoObviously I'm not gonna play this way because the image is too small(literally about 282x246 or so since this is just an image magnified to 110%) I was just making an observationThe magnified image looks like a low end CRT which imo is the best way to play retro games
>>9749553It is literally just bilinear filtering over less pixelsOn a CRT most game pixel are spread over two or three phosphors which is mostly what you are seeing, but as stated before it's too small
>>9749559>It is literally just bilinear filtering over less pixelsIt's just an image magnified to 110%There's no bilinear filtering involvedIf the display itself is doing bilinear interpolation that's another thing but I didn't do any tampering to it.>On a CRT most game pixel are spread over two or three phosphorsWell depends on the CRTAny high line CRT for example looks sharp like an emulator but with scanlinesWhile low end ones smooth the pixels>but as stated before it's too smallOf course I just find it fascinating how much it looks like the kind of CRTs I likeIt almost look like those low TVL 9 inch portable sets with the way the image blendsIt just goes to show how much there is to learn about displaysThough I suppose one day we'll have 20000PPI displays which will upscale everything perfectly and we won't look back anymore

>>9749584>It's just an image magnified to 110%How do you think image scaling works? You need some interpolation algorithm to do this, nearest neighbor, bilinear, bicubic, lanczos, whatever. Different algorithms produce different results. Some will be smoother, others more blocky. Nearest neighbor produces the best results for pixel art, provided the scale is integer. The Photos app on Windows 10 blurs shit when zoomed, for example. The older photo viewer was much better IMO.

480p on a 17 inch CRT or 480i on a 20 inch?trying to figure out how to replay RE4
>>9753034On a Wii
>>9753038yeah, but would you prefer 480p on a smaller screen, or 480i on a larger one?
>>9753041Well my 29" CRT looks great interlacedAlso I just found out you can make Wii look really sharp by disabling the de-flicker in USBloaderGXhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzJth1XFCBU
>>9751830Its a fun OVA and minku is cute
>>9752830>resin sanding and paintI just put some high strength epoxy on it using duct tape as psuedo clamps. Then I already have sand paper for grinding all the way down to finishing. I'll then use a plastic epoxy to shape it and if at that point it doesn't look passable I'll get creative. Maybe make it look like faux Kintsugi using paint.
>>9747310>first time seeing my image posted by someone elseTook this screenshot and posted it on 4chan a few years ago. It’s a nice feeling seeing it out in the wild.
My crt has a noticeable flicker/shimmer in the bottom right hand corner only. Particularly with lighter/brighter colours. Seems to alleviate slightly after a while of being on but still quite noticeable. Is this normal, or could there be a capacitor/power issue going on?
>>9754626also a high-pitched whine (more noticeable than other crts). I've read both could be a sign of a failing flyback
So what affordable crt is the best option if youre looking for something with a decent size?
Anyone know how to fix this warping on the corner of my CRT? It's my first one and I've heard flatscreen Trinitrons generally have issues like these, but it had component input so I thought of it as a tradeoff. It's not too noticeable when I'm playing and focused so should I just leave it alone?
>>9754839The one that's free on facebook marketplace in your area
>>9754847turn down the contrast a little and make it overscanmaking it underscan is a mistake for CRT's
>>9754839Just whatever you can find bro. For decent size I'd say anything from 20" - 27" is good, personally. Beyond that they get pretty bulky and heavy, but if you've got the space and a buddy to help move it, knock yourself out.
>>9754847
>>9754852Will do. Thanks anon.>>9754867I'm scared as shit to touch this thing though. I don't have any heart issues but I heard you get a nasty shock if you do anything stupid, and I'm not that smart.
>>9753050in my opinion that looks worse, but play it how you want
>>9747284had a small 13inch sharp tv with a cut cord. only issue was that it was cut super short. had to open it up and get at the last cm worth of wire to solder to because i didnt want to deal with the termination on the PCB instead.
>>9754847Looks like it's tilted a bit. Only way to know for sure is using 240p test suite, but you might not even need to access the service menu if that's the case. There's an option in the normal menu where you can adjust the screen angle.
>>9754887It probably depends on a per game basis. I like the clarity of some games like RE4 and Twilight Princess even if it exposes the dithering patterns, but others I just dont see much if any noticeable difference.
>>9755554Scanlines are straight at the top and curved on the bottom, looks like my Inshitnia flat that's stretched out at the bottom right corner but not as bad since it's only on the y-axis.
I got a really nice crt but its broken, I hope I can manage to fix it somehow/not damage it further by working on it
picked up a 32" Sharp with an entertainment center for $50 the other day. It's not a trinitron but it's my crt
>>9756101comfy af.This is the kind of setup people were dreaming about in the late 90s
Is the BeoCenter 1 any good?
>>9756212Not super sure where it fits into the line of B&O stuff but seems similar to MX6000. Definitely my favourite line of tubes, the contrast screen and audio are amazing and the sharpness is just right.
>>9756101That is my dream setup.
>>9756101Your crt is always the best one.
>>9756417The MX series has some serious horizontal ghosting issues though, which is super clear when playing with RGB.
is there a way I can use my PVM as a computer monitor? I know it sounds weird and redundant but its how I'd watch my anime
>>9756101Nice. I like small gaming collections like that, not ones where there's a million games for a million consoles, but stuff that feels a little less mechanical and more personal. I'm reorganizing my games currently because I sort them in weird arbitrary ways and should probably just do it alphabetically. Also, is it just me, or is the surface my TV is on sagging inwards? I thought it was a weird illusion looking at the photo but it's definitely sagging a little inwards.
>>9756614what are its inputs and does it do hd?
>>9756631oh shit its the funny sitting rpg meme guy
>>9756650PVM 1341
>>9756580Never seen any ghosting, is what you're referring to the poor horizontal linearity? These sets are indeed known for that and it can cause a kinda goldfish bowl effect on horizontal scrolling. Incidentally the last in the line (MX8000) fixes this issue entirely but it's too high TVL for my taste.
>>9756656and what os and gpu does the computer have?
>>9756710Win 11 and 6800XT
>>9756101nice clean and cozy set up, anon. i would add some houseplants to give the space a little life though
>>9756659Turn up the brightness and contrast and you'll see very clear ghosting lines on the MX6000-8000.
>>9756714as far as i know there's no way to connect your card directly to that monitor for 480i. it seems like the rx series doesn't support interlaced output at all, so if you want 480i you'll need to convert the video out to one of your monitor inputs.
>>9751894>You're not gonna get it done with copper-wickReally? Do most if not all of CRT boards use through hole components? Isn't it easy to desolder those with copper wick? The secret is to be generous with solder grease. My 32 inch panasonic tau is still rocking, but can't stop notice a weird buzz coming out of it from time to time; I really don't plan on recapping the thing anytime soon as I don't have the space nor the means to discharge it, but I think I can practice with small sets; probably ask my local melee community to lend me some CRTs: I pay for the capacitors and recap them, and if I fuck up I don't take responsibility. A lot of them are interested as TVs are cheap and plentiful here, and I can use the practice. When you recap sets, do you recap the whole board or only failing capacitors? I guess you test 'em with the multimeter? Do you look for documentation online? Anons who have recapped their sets, do you think the community mystifies a little to much the process of recapping a TV?
Been thinking of getting a CRT or like a CRT for my desk but I want it to be a good size for a desk nothing huge. Anybody got any ideas of brand or model to look around for?
>>9757161In my experience anything 13-14 inches is fine for a desk. If you're getting a TV, any brand will do. Some Sonys tend to have component, while other manufactuers only use composite or RF. If you go the PC monitor route, then 17 inches or less is ideal. Avoid the 9-inch eyestrain-machine PVMs. Personally rocking a Sony KV13FS100.
>>9757161Panasonic or JVC if you can get them. Or Sharp. Anything Japanese really.I have a little Panasonic 13" and it's really good.
>>9757364>>9757356Will hunt ebay for those, much appreciated on the info.
>>9757386Not ebay anon, look locally. Unless you wanna get scalped and have your CRT massacred in delivery.
>>9756631I think I owned that exact tv at one point.
>>9757386Panasonic ct13r, comes in white black or silver
>>9745678Adjust the TV or monitors geometry controls. You're not really meant to sit directly on top of a CRT TV screen either unless its very very small (under 9 inches) so try leaning back or adjusting your setup a little. Retro consoles and games are designed to be played on a CRT but you're not meant to be terribly close to the CRT screen. If you really want to see the pixels all super crisp and sharp up close rethink what you are doing and get yourself some half decent scaler kit and a nice LCD panel.
>>9757447>a nice LCD panelNo such thing. OLED or bust when it comes to modern displays.
>>9746151>PAL console>NTSC tvwhy
>>9748572??Wii has official component cables, what are you talking about>>9757748I assume he bought a CRT online
>>9745678>>9745843I find that smaller screens are easier to adjust. I have a 20" Trinitron and a 24" Toshiba and both were pretty straightforward to get a good result. I don't think it can ever be 100%, but it's close enough, and honestly for me that is part of the appeal. It's like driving a manual transmission car- your shift is never going to be perfect, so you're always striving to improve, and you accept that the world is an imperfect place and just deal with the tiny imperfections in life and your interactions with machines.
>>9746226It sucks, not a single game worked when I tried and it doesn't do 240p.
>>9747465I'm actually surprised that more 90s sets aren't having issues, because frankly the 70s caps were a lot more durable. But yeah I've recapped most of my CRTs, I generally go for automotive capacitors since I find they tend to be a bit more robust and long-lasting.>>9748249>>9748252>>9748271Seller is a fag but these little Toshiba A-series are honestly hidden gems, they're probably some of the sharpest consumer sets around, and I would say they give PVMemes a run for their money. They have component because the tube is actually good enough to make use of it.
>>9756105>no sound systemNo, people in the late '90s had better priorities than this.
>>9749719>TM910SUI got one of these for free back in 2015 or so. Honestly a great little monitor for a desktop setup, would highly recommend, and since it isn't Sony it tends to fly under the radar a bit.>>9750181Yeah, I've just straight up started asking people if I can have something because most of the time they'll forget. The worst was when my neighbours ended up giving away an Apple II because "oh you were at work while we were doing the spring cleaning, sorry we forgot you wanted it". Fuck being polite and modest, gimme your shit NOW.
>>9756101>It's not a trinitron but it's my crtThe best CRT is one that works, has good geometry, and has a lot of life left in the tube.
>>9756737You're right about the 6000 if you crank the brightness and contrast up, but not the 8000 then you're talking out of your arse, the 8000 is an entirely different design with a tube from Panasonic instead of Philips, the only similarity is the form factor being the same MX design language and casing
>>9758181Im currently building my sound system, I have pretty much everything high end period accurate parts, but only mediocre speakers for my amp.Any cheap but good modern speakers or should I continue to look for old big boxes?
>>9758180If they were hidden people wouldn't be selling them on Facebook for $150. They're the first flat screen people go to after WEGAs.
>>9758180How hard was the recap?I need to do it to a few of my tubes but frankly pulling the boards and especially disconnecting the flyback makes me afraid im gonna break something/ not be able to put it back together correctly.Lots of photos and marking cables is necessary I presume
>>9745734RGB is a signal, better than YPbPr even. Even though YPbPr was used for longer, when most of the world was already using HDMI.
>>9748530>>9748461>>9748359I was looking to do this myself with my laptop to my SCART TV, but I remember someone here or elsewhere telling me that plugging a modern PC into a consumer TV can damage it badly because of the different refresh rates (TV requiring 15kHz) or something? Is there any truth to this, or is it a misconception?
>>9748249>>9748252I have this exact TV and it's great. Got it from a black dude for $20. It's so small and its shape means I can easily put it on its side for TATE shmups. The only thing is it really stinks of cigs after a while.
>>9758204I own an MX8000 you bitch ass nigger, and it's got exactly the same ghosting and geometry issues that the MX6000 has.
>>9754867That's for purity. Won't do shit for convergence or geometry
>>9758975I know YPbPr usage dates as far back as 1950s, but it was all experimental at the time and would eventually lead to YIQ used in NTSC and YUV in PAL. So nothing in terms of standards. What's the first device that used YPbPr component connections in consumer space? I can only think of DVD players and that would make YPbPr's place in time from the late 90s to the end of WiiU's life.Analog RGB on the other hand was first widely used in computers from the late 80s (VGA) and there are still new devices being made that have an RGB SCART output, namely DVB-T2 STB decoders.
>>9759280why did you feel the need to specify it was a black guy
>>9759674Because it wasn't a white guy and I need you to understand that.
>>9759361talking out your arse it has it's own set of problems, its got different ghosting issues due to the internal sharpening and such, not due to the design. I've got one as well nigger, as well as a mx4200.
14'' consumer CRT with composite, DO THEY EVEN EXIST?
>>9759751yeah, I got one in my room right now. Sure you meant to say composite?
>>9759517Are you able to read that image? The disk magnets, which are pictured here >>975486 are for corner geometry. I've done this myself on several TVs.
>>9759754Mind to share the model?
>>9759751Almost all CRT's have at least a composite input anondid you mean component?majority of silver sets post 2000 have component regardless of size
>>9760053It's a panasonic tc-14sv10m. Basically identical to picrel. I'm from nz, so maybe the situation is different where you live? But I would expect most models you're likely to find would have composite.
>>9745821RGB mod (or get a component transcoder) and use DP to VGA adapter

>>9760325Just say Ypbpr and you wont get confused
So I got recommended this encoder by some anon here to use on my computer since it can only output RGB scart.I got it yesterday and it worked but the image is kinda "wavy" is this supposed to be normal?it certainly doesn't happen with my consoleshttps://files.catbox.moe/cn4elx.webm
>>9760459>deawooim not familiar with the brand but a lot of crt tvs had a similar design into the 2000s. for some reason every flat crt had to be silver. its interesting following those types of aesthetic changes, like how every pc went from being beige into the 90s, to being black in the 2000s, mostly till today where black + glass siding and or RGB shares a lot of the aesthetic culture limelight.
>>9760506i can't speak for that encoder i guess but that isn't how rf, composite, svideo, or component look plugged directly into my crts
>>9760506here's a smaller sized videohttps://files.catbox.moe/143flw.mp4>>9760514Yeah I figured, something is definitely wrong with the picture.I wonder what could be the issue...
>>9760540maybe its something to do with the power brick that usb c is plugged into. did it come with some or are you using a phone brick? is it a fast charging brick? try something older
>>9747284It is common for businesses to deliberately destroy old merchandise so that it can't be resold (I don't know why). Once while visiting my parents, I peeked into the rental store I used to work at. It was being shut down, so the guys were destroying everything, including snipping wires to stuff like headsets. They gave me a hammer so that I could smash apart the aisles...
>>9745678>How do you guys deal with CRT geometry?By not being an obsessive fucking basement loser who gives a shit about "muh CRTs".You should try it.
>>9760616>did it come with some or are you using a phone brick?no it did not and yes I'm using a phone brick, I even plugged it into my pc and the results are the same.I think that the issue is from the seller himself.looking at the reviews now, I think I've been bamboozled
>>9746578>>9758152you're right. i guess you just need to switch to ntsc output if you want composite and s-video then?
>>97606650/10
>>9760684You didn't get bamboozled, my vga to svideo/composite from him works perfectly.
>>9760726have you tried the composite signal?does it have a wavy effect?because looking at the reviews it seems like I'm not the only one with this issue
>>9760743I do not understand this shit fully but this is something the guy said before>RGB to s-vid (NTSC or PAL) can be pretty damn good, externally converting RGB to composite has somewhat shitty artifacts, worse than internal composite generation in a console/whatever since the artifacts are going to drift around in position rather than being a fixed patternI think you're just out of luck on trying to get native looking composite out from an emulator on PC.
So, I've finally convinced my sister to give me the CRT from our childhood. It's been in her basement for a decade at the least. So I want to do some maintenance and have some questions on what exactly to do.Obviously, I am gonna do a recap.Anything else I might want to replace while I'm at it or should be doing?Should I only replace the electrolytic caps or all in general?I have the service manual so knowing what to get isn't a problem.Pic related is the CRT, a Sony Trinitron KV-M1450A which looks as good as I remember it.
Would games look good on this? It has s-video. Only issue is that I would be playing it on my desk, so would it be too big?
>>9760923Yeah, I tried my wii with the encoder and the wave effect is still there but it's a lot less visible.not gonna bother with converter, encoder, cables or whatever.I'll just use the ntsc composite filter in retroarch, it looks pretty close to the real thing.here's a shitty comparison that I made
>>9761152That would definitely be too big for your desk.I have a 27” and out of curiosity I recently looked up the recommended viewing distance for TVs by size. 8’ is recommended for 27” SD TVs, and I now sit about 6-7’ away since it’s the best I can do with my setup. It made me realize that I was sitting way, way too close because it was “comfy” to wheel my TV up to my seat on the cart I made for it, but the picture just isn’t as good in that situation.
>>97611808' is insane for a 27" TV. I sat more or less the length of my legs away from a 29" and it looked great.8' is my distance to a 55" 4K TV and I want to get a bigger one when I change it.Resolution difference vs a CRT definitely plays some role here, but it's not as important as you'd imagine. With all types of displays the "bigger is better" rule is always true.
>>9761232>I sat more or less the length of my legs away from a 29" and it looked great. That’s pretty much what I was doing, but I immediately appreciated moving it back. I’m not rejecting bigger TVs or anything, but I definitely don’t think you (I) should be that close or that there’s much to gain from being that close to lower fidelity content. Like I said, I’m at closer to 6’ and I feel pretty comfortable with that.
>>9761005If its working fine, what reason is there to mess with it. If the capacitors had failed it would not be working correctly.
>>9761364Well, it is still working fine. But I want it to last and have no idea whether caps started to leak or not (or who knows when they would start to). That TV is easily ~30y old. It hasn't been in use for 15y or even more and since it is from my childhood, I'd like it to last. Also I noticed that the SCART socket doesn't really grip the plug, making it lose sync when the cable is even remotely touched (having to put a book or two under it, so it has contact with the pins) so that's definitely something I also want to fix.And while I'm at it, I want to preventatively do a recap. So my questions still stand.Should I replace all capacitors or only the electrolytic ones (since they are the ones that fail and start to leak) or would it be a good measure to replace all while I'm already at it? Anything else that I could replace while it is open? Not to mention, since it was in the basement I want to give it a good clean.Even if it doesn't make a difference in its longevity, it at least won't hurt.
>>9761005Man that's a nice picture. Is there a secret to taking good quality photos of CRTs on modern cameras? Mine very rarely have that vibrant pop to them.
i tested out my ps1 and ps1 emulator on a crt. no difference. i tested out new games on a crt. text is hard to read and minor difference in display. why is crt even a thing other than some niche fad.
>>9761641>why is crt even a thing other than some niche fadBecause they were the only kind of consumer televisions that existed for decades and decades? What kind of question is that?

>>9761501do don't have to do maintenance on non-electrolytics. other than cleaning the dust, you could clean the sockets and controls with contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol and compressed air. also do a visual inspection for any cold solder joints or anything that looks burnt or open traces or something.
I ended up getting the RCA F27676BC. 1. What universal remote should I get for it? I can’t even change the input without it so it’s literally unusable right now.2. Is the weight of it (seller said it was 45 lbs) too much for the desk it’s sitting on?3. Is the picture actually good?
>>9762185Fucking forgot the picture
>>9762185any universal remote that has an input button should work. rca made a couple so you could get an rca remote if you want to be sure. if my shitty particle board ikea desk can hold a 50lb monitor, yours is probably fine. you can look up the desk specs if you really want to know. no telling how the picture is from a blurry picture of static.
>>9762185>>9762192>>9762379I have to wonder if remote controls of other RCA Colortrak Plus models would work, or are they model specific? is there a RGB scart for the wii? or would I have to use an N64 one? I wanna hook it up to my PVM and I already have the SCART to RGB breakout cables.
so why does grandia in particular have a black bar on the right side of the screen, but only for grandia, and only during the in-game scenes and in-game gameplay? (animated FMVs don't have that black bar on the right)I'll post another game working on the same console on the same tv so you can see the difference
>>9762475there is, but the wii renders ycbcr internally so there's no benefit over using component

>>9761180LMAOthat's pretty dumbHow big do you think the astro city cab screen is
>>9761232>>9762515I tried finding the calculator I used last time, and I’m not sure if this one is the same or not, but it says 8.6’ is the MAXIMUM viewing distance. I probably misremembered. In any case, I was definitely sitting too close for my comfort with the TV at just leg’s length.I want to be clear that the anecdote about recommended viewing distance was an aside and not my reasoning for saying that would be too large for a desk. I definitely think that would be too large for a desk in footprint at least, but maybe manageable if you plan to scoot back a few feet when playing. But it seems like you’d just be better off not wasting half your desk space with the TV and getting a small center or table and putting it next to your desk space.
>>9762538I have a 27" set and sit 1 metre away and it's good viewing distance
>>9762542Like I said, I personally didn’t like it. I wouldn’t say I had eye strain specifically, but something didn’t feel right. Maybe it sounds like splitting hairs, but I think 4-5’ would be my ideal. >>9762505Your pvm doesn't take component?
>>9762504>the wii renders ycbcr internallyare you sure about that?I would've thought the Wii does RGB natively and then converts to it

>>9763143dont u mean input svideo? if so yes, im pretty sure u dont need a tv that supports svideo as this block is just an adapter to convert pins from svideo to scart, also if u open the block, on the pcb the svideo is connected directly to the yellow rca next to it, so u can use it as a passthru adapter, which is what i did for my old pc, going thru svideo from my gpu to crt, i was having issues due to the pc outputting 60hz, and my crt being uk pal, i had a black and white picture.in the end i plugged the svideo out on my gpu into this block, then the yellow rca next to it i plugged into my crt and i managed to get a colour picture (the block wasnt plugged into anything, it was just to adapt the svideo to yellow rca)

>>9763779That should only be a one and done sort of situation when adjusting your CRT's geometry when testing things with the 240p test suite. You shouldn't have to do that when playing different games.
>>9763859Well, even the same console shows a slight different alignment for every game. And sometimes I switch between PAL and NTSC games, and I like to remove the black bars PAL games have. My Trinitron has a 4:3 to 16:9 button, I dunno if changing one changes the other but that would be a good way to eliminate those black bars I guess.Should I stop fucking with the geometry then? Or do it once every time I switch consoles?I don't mind overscan, but I guess I should stop being this autistic about underscan.
>>9763876>Well, even the same console shows a slight different alignment for every game. And sometimes I switch between PAL and NTSC games, and I like to remove the black bars PAL games have.Oh, I didn't realize that you were doing all that, in that case, I guess it makes sense to keep making adjustments, but that's outside of what I know since I only mess around with NTSC.

>>9765187There's a reasonable few online games with USB keyboard chat, some other MMOs or whatever as well as the odd FPS that use mice, and it also had Linux available.
>>9765218is there a reason those accessories couldn't work using the controller port like on the PS1?
>>9758683>If they were hidden people wouldn't be selling them on Facebook for $150Disregard those faggots, they probably aren't selling them because of the component, they're pricing them that way because "I heard RETRO stuff is VALUABLE now, and this TV is RETRO!">>9758921I would say that a CRT is a more advanced recapping project, if you're not comfortable taking something apart and then putting it together again, I would suggest practicing on solder kits, radios, motherboards, etc, before graduating to CRTs. The analog boards themselves are not super complex but you do need to know what you're doing because some of the capacitors can kill you (be sure to grab a high value resistor and short it across any of the large capacitors you find for a few minutes each). I do find taking photos helps me avoid headaches later on when putting things back together, so I would recommend doing it. Marking capacitors and knowing where each one goes is probably more important than marking cables.>>9760406Man that Toshiba is cute
>>9765187For two player guncon2
>>9765223You could I guess. Gamecube had a lower end Logitech force feedback wheel that used the controller port. But for niche accessories of the same type as PC it's simpler to just use the USB, especially if you want to use the controller simultaneously like SOCOM and MGO.By the PS4 Sony started being cunts about drivers to make you buy licensed stuff, but back then none of the other consoles had regular USB ports and PCs didn't really factor in, plus to play GT4 you'd really want the licensed GT Force or Driving Force Pro more than the generic PC versions at the time so you'd get a d-pad and stuff for menus.
Finally got an S-video cable for my Sega Saturn. Testing it out on the regular Trinitron I've got.>>9765187I used one of them quite a bit with a USB keyboard for Phantasy Star Universe and Metal Gear Online. Also, Half-Life was compatible with both a USB keyboard and mouse.
>>9765336And here's my Saturn S-video cable on my WEGA Triniton. It looks beautiful, but unrelated to the cable, my WEGA has a clear problem with the picture getting really blurry near the top of the screen. Is this something that can be fixed?
Anons, pardon my ignorance.. but CRT itself is PAL or NTSC? if it's correct, would a PAL console work on an NTSC TV? is that a thing or I'm mixing up the concepts?
>>9765546That blurriness is definitely a convergence issue. It can be fixed but requires opening the back and making adjustments while the tv is on. Looks pretty alright otherwise.

>>9765559The tube itself isn't PAL or NTSC, it's the question whether the electronics driving it support the signal. Most PAL sets do NTSC no problem or at least sync to 60Hz (where without NTSC color encoding support you'll get black-and-white picture over composite, but RGB works fine). I have no experience with American TVs, but I doubt PAL or 50Hz support is as common.>>9765583You need to see what you're doing.

>>9766158I’m just saying because mine accepts Svideo through SCART but you need to switch a setting with a button otherwise it will display incorrectly, I assume that it’s related to the fact that the both composite and svideo are sharing the inputDo you have a user manual or just the service one?
>>9766174I found this online.I think it does
>>9766181Yep, mine works that way too, sounds like you’re good
>>9766182Greatjust one more question:can I use a scart cable to get s-video? or do I have to buy an s-video cable?
>>9766191You have to buy one of those adapters posted as far as I’m aware but I suppose someone may have made custom svideo scart cable but I think that’s a bit pointlessI have two SCART inputs, one to an RGB switch box and the other is a composite/svideo switch box
>>9766191>>9766201In theory you could get S-Video with a standard SCART cable. It uses one of the RGB pins (I think red) for chroma, while the usual composite pin is luma + sync. It's up to the device connected. It would need to send an S-Video signal as described above and keep pin 16 low (composite/RGB switch set to composite not to confuse the TV).That last part is not necessary, as you'd need to switch to the S-Video channel on your TV manually anyway, plus RGB and S-Video support on each input is mutually exclusive. On the usual AV2 channel you'd have a monochrome picture (as there's only luma on the composite pin).I honestly can't recall any device that actually does this, maybe some STB or DVD player like that exists, but all I've ever seen only had a CVBS/RGB switch in the settings.
>>9766267That’s fine and all but I still don’t get the pointEspecially if he’s going directly from the console, it’s not like it will switch between RGB and composite seeing as most consoles have proprietary inputs
>>9766280Yeah, there's no point really. It's possible, but rarely (if ever) used. With a console that's just unnecessary complication. As you said, the connectors are proprietary, usually with all pins for different video signals being separate. So you'd have to put a two-channel physical switch on the cable itself to alternate between R+CSYNC and chroma+luma from the console, assuming we want to retain RGB compatibility.
>>9762114>do don't have to do maintenance on non-electrolyticsYeah, thought so. Just wanted to make sure if there are any parts that might need replacing as well.>>9762114>you could clean the sockets and controls with contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol and compressed air. also do a visual inspection for any cold solder joints or anything that looks burnt or open traces or somethingVisually, it seems to be alright.Though I noticed that some pins of the SCART sockets aren't really soldered in.Not that it really matters since I am going to replace it, just to make sure that it can grip the plug again.Cheers.
Are there any pictures or videos of CRTs operating without the glass screen? I’ve always wanted to see that but search results reveal nothing.

>>9766325>>9766341>>9766358>>9766360>>9766364I guess I thought that the pixels were like lights (kind of like a lite-brite) and that the glass screen was there to protect it from being damaged.

Took this photo just now. Might start doing more of these comparisons. It’s almost unbelievable how much of a difference playing on a CRT can make sometimes.
>>9766486The CRT display is a "laser" beam of electrons exciting a phosphor powder painted on the glass. It works completely differently than the LED array you were thinking of.Though I think you might be onto something with your lite-brite idea. Circular microleds stacked like shadowmask phosphors, and a gaussian blur + fast PWM electronics could simulate a crt quite nicely.
>>9765093Thanks for the the offer but I'm about to move, and I'm also going to have a lot more time to look for stuff so I'm pretty confident that ill be able to find a some crts in two or three months, that being said does anyone know what crt this is? >>9767861No idea what the CRT brand/type is but the label says the monitor is a Compal P554.
As a kid I only owned CRTs with curved screens. As an adult the opposite. I guess because I've never seen or used them side by side I have no clue which is inherently better or if it ultimately matters at all. Seems more or less the same to me.
>>9768120Because of the way a CRT works in a conical fashionA curved screen will often look better towards the edgesA flat screen usually has more geometry and convergence issues towards the edges
>>9767997Are you able to find any manuals for it?

>>9768409they look like low to medium end stuff you'd get with a prebuilt, i am personally not picky so i would grab one or two if the geometry isn't fucked up, average consumer crt is better than no crt imoyou may have different criteria however
I found somebody selling this and I'm super curious on using this as a desk tv for retro games. I don't know if its a CRT and I tried looking around but can't find this exact one with spec details.
