Recommended tate shmups for newbies to the Genre I’ve played many horizontal shooters from classic consoles but want to take the dive into cave games. So far I’ve tried donpachi and dodonpachi with great difficulty. What got you into bullet hells/shmups? Also stick vs controller?
>>9590227cotton 2 was my first, i recommend raystorm for beginners
I played Raiden and thought it was fun
The one that has music you like. They are all the same shit
>>9590227Give Espgaluda a try.
>>9590227try dodonpachi daioujou. it's kino. it's got top tier waifus and huge explosions. It's hard as balls, but just keep adding coins.
>>9590340imagine unironically playing nonsensical dogshit like this lmao.
>>9590227play zeroranger, then go play all the retro shmups it references.
>>9590227Donpachi, Dodonpachi, Gunbird 1&2 and Batrider is what got me into the genre.
Someone here said Tiger-Heli was a good beginner shmup, but I watched a Shmup Junkie video where he said it was too hard for beginners. What do you guys think?
>>9590467Tiger-Heli is probably the best beginner shmup there is as it forces you to learn all of the basics to complete it without dying, and also has very forgiving checkpoints. Ideally, you want to practice sections without dying though, as you can just brute-force through sections with dying. It's just a very basic game that beginners would probably find too primitive/boring, and the main flaw is just that the terrain and enemies are so limited that it's hard to actually know/memorize which section you're at because it all flows together.
Just say shoot em up. You disgraceful fuckers. It's already an abbreviation.
>>9590475Just say "shooter" or "shooting game".
>>9590351Makes sense to me. Maybe get your brain checked.
>>9590227Go play Mars Matrix.
>>9590467It's a good beginner shooter in general, even if somewhat rough around the edges. I think it's a nice middle ground between arcade Galaga/Xevious style games and more proper shmups that came later on
>>9590227>Recommended tate shmups for newbies to the GenreGradius II Famicom version. I really, really hated Gradius ever since I played the first game for the NES. I didn't really know how do get good at the game after losing my power-ups time and time again, and with not enough power-up capsules to recover, I gave up. Years later I played Famicom version of the second game and I finally started to catch on, eventually mastering this particular game and taking on the others in the series.>>9590258>The one that has music you like. They are all the same shitYou need some practice.
>>9590227>tate shmups99% of shmups is tate, poser.>>9590496Haha

>>9590609Gradius lol
the one that made me love the genre is life force for nes

Are shmups underappreciated /vr/?
For a beginner SNES Parodius was a game I managed to finish as a kid.ESP Rade is my choice. JP version is a bit easier on default settings, even a beginner can do 3 stages
>>9593215The way social media is, i'd argue literally everything is underappreciated.Let people like what they like. Shmups are a niche and that's fine, but fuck people who think it's not a valid game genre to like.
>>9590227Sonic Wings 3 and Strikers 1945.I think they're fairly easy as well.

i feel so unsatisfied when i pick spread fire ships yet they're the only ones i'm good with
>>9593983I like Gradius III and IV, but I feel like V is more fun to replay, and more fair. I like the concept of Gradius games, the music, lots of powerups and the levels, but they are so damn brutal and unfair sometimes, to the point where you might as well quit after dying once. With the R-Type games I've only played the arcade, Super R-Type and R-Type III. Three is my favorite of those, and Final just edged it out for my top 9. I love the force system and power-ups in that game, but after the first level the game becomes incredibly hard.
Is there any gameplay difference between Gradius (arcade) and Nemesis? Or between Gradius II and Vulcan Venture?
Kingdom Grand Prix
For me, I just got 1CC Abadox (nes). This game is great, fun level design similar to Salamander, and you should play it, awesome music and visuals so replaying doesnt get old
>>9594457>I like Gradius III and IV, but I feel like V is more fun to replay, and more fair.To be fair, III & IV are widely regarded as the hardest games lol (I'm assuming you're emulating the PS2 port) I think my top 3 for Gradius would be II, Gaiden and V.>With the R-Type games I've only played the arcade, Super R-Type and R-Type IIINice. III is a favorite of mine too but 1 will always have the nostalgia factor since it was one of my first STGs. Delta is also really good. It's fast paced by R-Type standards and it rewards you quite nicely for using your force pod as a battering ram.
>>9594928>Critics have generally looked at Abadox favorably for its design, but negatively for its high level of difficulty
>>9594616>Gradius (arcade) and Nemesis?Nemesis has harder enemies (more aggressive), but it's easy to power-up after death since everything will drop power-up capsules for a while

>>9590227All depend on what you are looking for.Any shmup can be your first it really, depend on the dedication you want to poor on it, even more true when nowdays you have training tools, adjustable auto fire, rewind and save states which make the training way more efficient and short. Also be aware that some games can be average to hard to 1CC but very hard to insane 2ALL ( 2nd Loop), some Psikyo games are like this for example. Now for the recommendation I try to give you some easily emulated or game available on steam or ACA :Relatively easy.Dariusburst AC : depend on the route but it mostly easy/mild hard at best for an 1CC)Akai Katana got released last month it's a mild difficulty cave with a lot of thing to learn from.Area 88 is fun arcade game you may learn movement and placement, learning curve is kind of flat but expect a small pick at level 5. give the snes/sfc version a try too.NormalR-type leo is kind of the same you may also learn some stuff about force and option (harder at level 4).Fighting Hawk is close to Area 88 but as a verti. not too hard not too easy Metal Black is between the 2 but you won't learn that much from as the game is weird AF.some others weird shmup ; fun but wont learn much from them.Xexex mild 1CC on the japanese version. (2all is another story)X-Multiply is slightly harder to 1CC but at least you won't have a burnout dealing with it 2ALL even if it's hard.Mild hardGame Tengoku is cute nice and fun and you will learn tons of shit and tricks, but 2ALL is on another story, way too hard for it own good.Dragon Spirit is old but it one of my favorite games ever, it come from a time where you needed a separate button to shoot sol enemies. Maybe a little bit long and learning curve can be a bitch.Outzone depend on the version and weapon management can be a nice game to pick. Also most Psikyo and Cave games 1CC can be put here.
>>9595495Everything on the second row.
>>9594928Natsume wanted to be Konami so bad, it's pretty funny. They made some good games though.
>>9595586>no checkpoints + gives you your options back upon death, Salamander 2-style>V's only hard stage is the penultimate one, meanwhile IV hits you like a brick by level 3>options that let you aim in any direction for easier stages, or freeze them in place for easier point-blanking of bosses>small 1x1-pixel hitboxes>doubles the basic bullet limit, making it much easier to kill enemies when you have more bullets to fireNah, IV is the second hardest Gradius after III. V is a casual walk in the park by comparison.

>>9603236again, I rather finish a game first before deciding if I want to waste my time with scoring when I may not even like the game in the first place.
>>9603304Obviously you have to play a game to see if you like it. And with shmups simply seeing the end is trivial with credit feeding and save states....

>>9590227>What got you into shmups? I played Deathsmiles as my first shmup game because of the girls, I've been hooked in the genre since then.
Were shmups appreciated during the retro years? I was alive during the 90's but I can't recall if people actually liked them or not. I was too young maybe. I do know that at least arcades had them and also fighting games.
>>9605031I'd believe stuff like pic related pretty much speaks for itself, at least from a western perspective.
>>9605083First time ever seeing this game kek. I'm sure at least some shmups had to be appreciated though. Also like I said I do remember them at some places such as arcades or those play places for kids, theaters, even restaurants. In fact my local theater has a few arcade machines and iirc one of them was a shmup.
>>9590227Gun Nac, and the guardian legend are my favorite on NES
>>9605031I enjoyed playing them when I was in the arcades back in the 90s. Playing UN Squadron at local pizza joint was fun as it was only a half mile down the road, and quarter plays compared to a lot of 50 cent plays in our local arcade
>>9605163based tastes. Guardian Legend is my number 1 NES game. Compile really could make a good game.
>>9599578Eliminate Down and Strato Fighter maybe?
>>96050312 quarters would last like 10-30 mins on fighting games (for me), while 2 quarters would last 4-6 minutes on a shmup. As a teen it didn't make economic sense and not many people played so couldn't learn from others, meanwhile guys were eager to tutor new players at fighting games and I made some good friends that way
I've been fucking loving this game the last month or so. I can almost 2cc hard mode on arcade
>>9605364isn't eliminate down a meme shooter because of its price? I will look into strato fighter as I never seen that one
>>9606530lol, lmao babies first shooter. Look at how tiny that hit box is when you would have been killed in a proper shooter by many of those hits. might as well stick with cave games and jrpgs if you need something easy to play
>>9608227I nominate you for the most retarded post in all of 4chan. Congratulations!
Override is quite good - for PCE, I'm no expert on shmups and I beat it in 2 days. Good ost. Kinda pricey though, got it for 50bucks for 2 days gameplay, I still recommend it as a beginners shmup.Other shmups I've beaten which should be ok fo beginners: Thunder Force 3, Wonder Boy 3: Monster Lair (beaten on hardest). Zero Wing (stayed up a whole night to beat it, last few levels were pretty hard for me). GleyLancer. Battlemania. I've tried Gunhed and it's easy until last level that filters me big time. Elemental Master. Ye, i've mostly played on MD.
>>9595495Missile, Vertical, laser doesn't matter, R.Option, reduce, and either full barrier or mega crushThat's how I got my first 1cc anyway, With vertical and missile, plus rotating options you basically annihilate everything in front, above and below you without having even think. Reduce seems like the best shield by far as not only does it reduce your hitbox, and still acts as a shield and absorbs multiple hits
>>9608237He's right though.
I saw a horizontal shmup in an arcade cabinet a long time ago, must have been mid/late 90s. The attract mode showed a "wall of guns" type boss and one of the weapons it had shot diagonal laser bolts that had a candy cane-like spiral pattern. I can't really remember anything else for sure. Anyone knows what game I'm thinking about?I started thinking about it yesterday and checked through videos of dozens of games from around that era and before, but didn't find it.
Been playing Kingdom Grand Prix for arcade, is a sequel to Sorcer Striker which is also solid. This one has some racing mechanics
>>9608223I don't know how much it costs but I like Eliminate Down more than Thunder Force IV, Gradius II or R-Type II for example.
