I know that the graphics are downgraded from the arcade version, but why is this called KI Gold anyway, as opposed to just KI2? Are there any gameplay or other improvements?

It was originally supposed to be KI1, but then, they switched to KI2 because it was more of a hot and relevant product at the time of release.

KI Gold has a bunch of extra modes and options... but then again, most console ports have at least 1 extra mode not in arcade. I guess it was just a marketing strategy. Curiously, Mortal Kombat copied this in 1999 with MK Gold on Dreamcast.

It's KI Gold, not KI 2 Gold. Shame the game never got ported to the PS2 or XBOX, those graphical effects are missed from the N64 game.

I gotta shamefully admit, i kinda want the KI 1up Arcade machine since its the only official home release of Rare's 3 arcade titles (not counting that weird redemption game) that i dont have to buy an xbox one for.

They added an extra ending where Sabewulf knots every character if you complete the arcade mode without being hit once.

They probably did it to make it sound like an upgrade as opposed to the obvious downgrade that it was. Kind of like how the PS1 version of X-Men vs. Street Fighter was called "EX Edition" in Japan.

Let's see:
>cut animation frames and lower resolution character sprites in order to save cart memory (this has nothing to do with actual processing power issues)
>real 3D backgrounds at 60fps instead of pre-rendered video like in 2

If the N64 had CD, KI Gold would have looked much better than 2. The backgrounds in Gold are superior to those in 2.
