Old man on marketplace selling pic related for $50 cad. Go to buy it and sure enough a senior citizen pulls up in a dodge caravan. Buy the game blindly because it's an old dude and the pictures he posted seemed legitimate.

Upon further inspection I am at a loss and require /vr/'s assistance. Box face surface feels a little too glossy, print quality is high, all the inserts feel and look way too real. Box has wear associated with age. I've seen my fair share of reproduction boxes but this one has me stumped.

Tried looking around and couldnt find much information. Did GB boxes ever have a glossy film on the front?

I'm aware the cartridge included is incorrect, but this is by far the worst label in terms of print quality I've ever seen on an "authentic" gb game. I opened it an the board is legitimate... this is some sort of first/ weird print error?

Pls excuse blurrey pic, one chip has "nintendo" printed on it which leads me to believe it's real. But then why is label so crap :(

I think you wasted your money regardless. But yeah should've at least opened the box. Never bought used shit in your whole life? That's second hand buying 101.

Somone else has noticed this difference in print quality before, but the thread never received a resolution, pic related. Mine is comparable to the one on the right.

I don't care that I'm potentially out $50, I just want answers, thanks all :).
>>
>>9277325

Valid point, usually take greater care when purchasing things used. I only bought this for the box so selling off the other contents should make me break even easily.

SML1 with that printing error regularly goes for upwards of 800 dollars
>>
I cannot see anything wrong with any of this.
>>
>>9277346

Lmao, you're kidding. Got any more info?
>>
>>9277346
Who the fuck has 800 spare for a Game Boy game?

Another picture of the side of the box, back is a little less glossy. Highly doubt the cartridge is worth anywhere near $800 tho :(.
>>
>>9277374
Fuck man looks real to me, I don't know what you're exactly asking for here, every Game Boy box I had looked like this.
>>
>>9277380

Just uncertain if game boy boxes had such a gloss on them, I don't have any other ones to reference to. I have a few gba boxes and they have an eggshell finish to them almost. The gloss is throwing me off. Thank you for your input tho!
>>
>>9277359
Nerds with jobs and no other hobbies.
>>9277380
This. Every gameboy game I ever owned as a kid had a super glossy box.
>>9277384
https://www.videogamesage.com/forums/topic/7403-super-mario-land-gb-us-box-variants-what-exactly-are-they
There's a little info about the printing differences on the boxes. You can probably use that to track down any other discussions on the topic.
>>
>>9277386
Imagine actually giving a shit about this box variation shit.
>>
50 is way to much for SML2 its super common game. I'd give maybe 10 for it.
>>
>>9277429
Complete in box it's going for around $120. This one came with the metroid 2 poster and promotional material. Loose game is like $20 CAD.
>>
>>9277410
I emulate everything and the only systems/games I own are ones I kept from childhood and a Saturn I got in a $20 misc. electronics box at a garage sale. I cannot imagine giving a shit about anything beyond playing old videogames.
>>
>>9277437
A single game complete in box costs more than an Everdrive? A fool and his money are quickly parted.
>>
>>9277454

The emulation vs 1st party debate is long drawn out one. People can enjoy games anyway they want. I personally emulate games that are harder for me to find, possessing the games is also nice :).
>>
>>9277454
Is this the first time you've visited the board? That debate finds its' way into 2/3 of the threads on here and is vomit inducing in every iteration.
>>9277470
This anon is correct.
>>
So you bought it for the box?
I'm glad you got scammed by the based old man.
>>
>>9277538

Yup, wanted to complete my loose copy of the game that I had a manual for aswell. Turns out everything is authentic tho so it's all good :).
>>
>>9277306
Moral the story: don’t buy Gameboy- GBA second hand, too easy to fake. Always get from retro stores
>>
>>9277306
>>9277309
I'd be more annoyed that it has Mario Land 1 inside
>>
>>9277878

It's actually really easy to authenticate GB/GBA games if you're able to open the cartridge. Fonts, text sizes, factory stamps and label colors are all easy indicators of authenticity from a glance. Once you've seen a few repros it's super easy to detect. I'm actually surprised people havnt started making higher quality repros. As for boxes, again, super easy to tell if it's a reproduction because for whatever reason the printing quality just isn't there yet aswell and theyre either super glossy or not glossy enough. I was just thrown off because I don't own any GB game boxes and the gloss confused me. :(

The print quality is because the reproductions are digitally printed. The originals used litho which would be impractical for short runs.
>>
>>9277890

I was at first, but I don't already own SML1 so it kind of worked out. Seller was super old and underpriced it pretty dramatically, I was happy to be able to scoop it up :).
>>
>>9278078

That's actually really interesting. I'm surprised more scammers wouldn't invest in that technology. Tonne of money to be made on boxes if they can actually produce a worthwhile replica.

does it have the embossed letters like the cart on the left, see how it says 00A between the octopus and the seal of quality? >>9277326
yours doesn't seem to have them, but, it could be a bad angle >>9277309

Bad Angle! Turns out the box is a first print American version and the SML1 game is Canadian/ French. Asked another forum about the label being wonky and looking like a reproduction, turns out it's real tho :).
>>
>>9277437
Do you mean that the game regularly sells complete for $120 or are there thousands of listings around for that price which have never sold? People always bang on about how much their games are worth but they rarely sell for the price they say

I like old video games, that's why I'm here. I also like old cars, but you can't download them ;)
>>
>>9278226
yeah, but the whole "I emulate" vs "i buy physical" shitty infighting and one-up manism you know is making this board worse though
>>
>>9278239
I supplied OP with anecdotal testimony about the glossiness of gameboy boxes I remember and linked a discussion I found on google. Another anon remarked about giving a shit whether a box is authentic or not and I more or less agreed with him stating that I didn't own or spend much on video games. There's no malice or oneupsmanship intended anywhere.....I only come here when I get sick of the EV vs ICE threads on /o/ anyway.
>>
>>9277470
So why insist on buying complete in box vs a loose copy if only care about playing it? Save yourself money.
>>9278223
A fool and their money is quickly parted. >>9277472
Keep vomiting, between the stomach acid corrosion and constant throat dicking you take every time you buy complete in box shelf candy, you’ll bleed out sooner and not have to deal with it.
>>
pure unbridled autism
>>
>>9277326
label might be replacement
however - if its a euro release disregard as their shit was similar but slightly different
also i see no number stamp on the right

>>9277306
box seems legit anon
i'd check my boxes but i flipped mine
gba, virtual boy, etc sometimes did have a slight gloss anonkun

seems pretty close
its VERY obvious when you have a reproduction box
text will be in the wrong spot
it will literally be blurry (have dot-matrix print bubbles, etc)

check the TM and R logos
you dont have another GB(c) box to compare to?

pokemon crystal for example is high gloss
>>
>>9278457

I uploaded a picture with the embossed factory stamp on the front label. I cracked open the game and found an authentic board inside. Somone in another thread stated it's a printing error or a slight shift during printing that makes it appear slightly distorted.

Yeah the gloss on the box threw me off for sure. Print quality is definitely there tho. I'm confident everything is authentic.
>>
>>9278479
just saw the cart pic
seems legit

they printed millions
im thinking its normal for them to appear "off" once in awhile

most of the labels nowadays are thrashed\worn anyway

nice price
i paid almost that amount for the loose cart
>>
>>9278489

Yeah, supposedly 11.5 million copies sold over 9 years. Many various different iterations / reprints / best seller versions

How are those two in any way related things? Everdrives are for playing, CIB games are for displaying on a shelf
