What are your personal misinterpreted sprites? Any you still have trouble unseeing? This Bowser was a big one for me.
>>9276334Obligatory. I still can't see the sprite correctly unless I focus really hard.
What exactly is a deadass? I thought it exclusively was used as a emphatic phrase, not a noun.
>>9276372I fell for this, didn't help I played earthbound before alttp so had porky on the mind.
Here's one that seems very silly, but hear me out. When I was a kid we had our NES hooked up to an old TV that my parents got in the 80s from a hotel that was throwing out their sets to replace them with newer ones. It was very fuzzy and low-quality. Because of how fuzzy it was, the FF1 Black Belt's fist looked like one solid flesh color that matched his face color and the blue line between his face and fist was not visible. On top of that, when he punched the fist in front of his face didn't move (or not that I remember), so it looked like a hand was coming out from the other side to punch.tl;dr - I thought the FF1 Black Belt's fist was a big round clown nose because of our awful old TV.

I don't know wtf they actually are but the little purple bastards in the sewers of the original NES TMNT game always looked like purple crab claws with tiny legs, where the claw acts as a head with a mouth. Also theblittle purple dude with a beard is clearly Nick Mullen, don't know wtf a Tomar is but that's a Mullennif I've ever seen one.
I remember noticing this right in the middle of the playthrough and it was impossible to unsee. For once I'll agree with OP. Why was Bowser's palette so limited in SMW? This is the final boss, shouldn't that be deserving of his own row od colors?
>>9277782Because by some reason the graphics were fucking shit. Any one has an explanation on why the colors in super mario world were so lofi and palettes were better even on a sega master system game?

>>9278306It's the Black Omen from Chrono Trigger.
>>9278313>xenomorph queen with big floppy hangersyou're welcome
I still see it to this day
>>9278313It's cooler as a tower, so that's how i'll continue to see it.
>>9277785You want a real explanation? It's probably a combo of just wanting a simple, cartoonish art style (very reminiscent of games like Pac-Land, desu) and also cartridge space limitations (big, simple flat shaded graphics are a lot easier to tile and compress compared to something more shaded/detailed, and cartridge ROM was still pretty expensive at the launch of the SNES). One of the Nintendo leaks a couple years ago included multiple iterations of Mario's player sprite for SMW in different styles, so it seems pretty likely that Nintendo experimented with the game's visuals before settling with the style in the final release.
i always saw the omen as intended but i never noticed the battle platform is always visable
i did make this mistake however
Chrono Trigger is notorious for this. The sprites are so detailed and so many enemies are weird alien things that it's easy to see things wrong.
>>9276429I never played FF1, so i'm gonna ask this now.Is the dark curvy pixel line right to his "clown nose fist" supposed to be a chin outline? Because I really see only a wide derpy clown smile.
>>9277827it's still pretty bad in SMW and always was. I never thought about it before today, but even SMB's colors have more pop than SMW. It was definitely a step backward or none at all.
>>9278437If I ever thought about it at all, I probably thought it was bling. But it's totally a chin shadow, yes.
>>9278430What messes people up is that you can't see the front of the ship during that fight so it's easy to misunderstand where you're standing. Then right after the thing disintegrates like this.
>>9278437It's meant to be a chin line but I have definitely seen it as a big goofy smile before, too.
>>9278443yeah that is a screw up cause they could have just had the entire ship disintegrate in uniform if its descending. counter argument the omen is tipping down like the titanic anyone else think the tyrano had no pupils except those tiny black pixels are its pupils
>>9278472Yeah, I didn't start noticing the pupils until emulation became a thing. That kind of thing blurs away if you're playing on composite.
>>9278461yeah i actually hate how square doesnt give 2 shits about keeping the characters designs the way we grew up with. for the love of fuck terra has GREEN hair. it fits in the lore perfectly. everyone else in the ff6 universe have normal hair colors (except for gau but hes a demon child anyway). it hints that sometihngs off about terra- that shes not human. also its green. like life. like the fucking earth. like TERRAbeta design is closer but then she has short hair
>>9278485The devs intended you to not see the pupils bruh

didnt realize these were curled up worms with faces. thought they were just big mouths and the face was their big glistening eye
i thought gogo was this weird yellow monster. his actual human eye area, i thought that was his smiling mouth. and his eyes were 2 dots in his red bandana.

>>9278427Your interpretation is correct. The original design for Samus was Nigel Thornberry in his classic rock phase.
>>9279770I think that image does a good job of showing how the shadow kind of fucks things up in addition. The third one is how the shadow actually looks in the game and that combined with the clashing perspectives between the world map and the ship really does make things very ambiguous.
>>9278472>counter argument the omen is tipping down like the titanicIf the sprite tilted that would work but it doesn't. It just falls ass first. It's kind of a mind screw if you know its a Star Destroyer since the angles of both the ship and the sphere consuming it make no sense when combined.
>>9279913You can always tell who's too young to know what these games looked like on a 13" CRT over RF.
>>9277391So you saw the sprites as intended?

>>9278793>>9278778damn, these two got me just now.
>>9278575>>9280124What that anon illustrated as colored marks on their cheeks are the bulbous eyes sticking out to the side. The chin is the nose. The nose is the gem. The eyes are, I guess part of the hair. The hair in the sprite gets a little messy but it's hair tied together with a decorated band like you can see in the official art.
>>9277761Probably has more to do with its development in general where they tried multiple artstyles, including pillowshading, and in the end just slapped together what looked the best and most finished.

>>9279770Almost everything about it is tailored to cause confusion. It's an evolution of the Ocean Palace despite looking totally different. And the word "palace" implies it's a stationary building rather than a mobile submarine so when it starts floating in the sky it's easy to assume the same thing applies. But instead it's supposed to be a starship that you never see fly anywhere. The only hint to this is Ayla's comment "fish become bird" but since it's Ayla saying it you aren't of the mind to take it too literally.
>>9279758I used to think that big oval was like a scuba visor or something.
>>9278313How is it not a tower? You fight Zeal on the very top of it at the end. You take elevators and shit throughout it
>>9280362The pencil is mightier than the sword!
>>9280463Thanks to me they were right!
>>9280349You do fight her on the "top" but what counts as the top is really the center of the sprite. It's the top of the ship's bridge. And you really don't travel vertically all that much. The Epoch drops you off in the back by the engines and you spend a lot of the time walking north. You only take two elevators in the entire thing. The Black Omen's floor plan is actually very accurate to it's intended design. It's just the overworld sprite that's a mess.
>>9280141god i wish the round eye monsters were put in. they have serious snes wacky era earthbound 2/smw1 and 2 vibes.>>9280094well to make it more convincing they would have to redraw the entire omen sprite at a downward slant and that would have taken a lot of space in the rom. originally the tyrano was supposed to submerge from its cave with glowing yellow eyes in the prototype but they had to can the idea cause they would need to store like 4 variants of the massive dinosaur spite just for a 1-time 2-3 second long cool effect. also how the fuck did they get there if the entrance is cornered off like that? and is that a tyrano egg?? i would love to play this beta
>>9280180Those wiki articles say he patented the home video game console, there were video games for at least 10 years prior to him doing that.
>>9280741It depends on what you count. You could go as far back as Tennis For Two but that's not really what people consider a "video game." The definition becomes hard to pin down until the Odyssey, which was unambiguously a video game.
>>9280940If you're going to discount things that are unequivocally video games on the basis of primitiveness of the technology, not being played on televisions, you could easily discount the Magnetbox as well. It looks more like a board game system that uses the television as an accessory than anything resembling what a living person would describe as a video game.
>>9280993The television part is a critical aspect of the "video" in "video game" though isn't it? Again, I get that it's nebulous but there are valid reasons to consider those very early electronic games that don't actually carry a video signal to not fit the bill. They're relevant to the evolution of the hobby but it's kind of like how a T. Rex isn't a chicken.

To all the anons wondering “wtf how did the developers not see that”I don’t know if there’s a name for this phenomenon, but another one which is often involved in the creative process is the artist going through multiple drafts/redraws and not realizing that the one they settle on doesn’t convey the information they were originally trying to communicate.Basically, if you went back in time to the artist who was responsible for drawing Bowser and showed him that sprite before he’d started working on it, he’d probably ask why the eyebrows were so weird and had a part which looked like pupils; but if you let him go through all of the iterations he did where he was trying to get the sprite just right, he’s going through a thinking process the rest of us aren’t privy to, to the point where he probably couldn’t see it the way OP does if he tried—his brain has different and more information about what the sprite is supposed to be than we do, but at the expense of him not seeing flaws which make it convey something different or incomplete to the audience. (I could also see that being a factor in the star destroyer case, even though that was also likely muddled by having different people work on objects and backgrounds). This is why it’s important to re-read essays before you submit them, and get the perspectives of others from time to time when drawing—you might have started out with a clear vision in mind, but along the way edit out some lines where you justify one of your conclusions and make it look like you just pulled it out of your ass at the last second; or you draw two or more overlapping details too close together in a way which makes your drawing look like…well, some of the sprites being discussed ITT.

>>9282150Excuse me? I'm willing to derail this thread for more details about this.
Q. Bee in Darkstalkers is a deliberate example of this. Her "face" is fake. It's an evolutionary decoration meant to attract prey like the lure on an anglerfish. Her actual eyes are the bulbous things on her head. Her idle sprite looks like it's staring at the floor but she's in fact staring straight at her opponent.
>>9278793I wouldn't be surprised if the ambiguity on that one is purposeful.
>>9285239The deliberately ambiguous ones are awesome. People still argue over whether Mack is a sword with eyes, if it's just the pumpkin's hands gripping the handles, or both.
>>9280349It's the middle, raised section of the ship. (LIke the bridge on a "real" Star Destroyer )
>>9276372>>9283173>>9283348Personally, I feel like my brain just gave up trying to find the face and just assumed it was some kind of mask. I didn't see it as intended but I didn't see the left either.
>>9283208At some point I started seeing a pussy on the mushroom.
>>9285236Interesting how the fanart is almost always opposite, making the insect eyes appear as decorative afterthought.
>>9282645I’ve always seen these as the developers intended from the front (“intentionally fake” skull-face abdomen and camouflaged real-spider head), but as soon as I see the backside where the head and abdomen are connected with a different texture pattern than the rest of the underside my brain immediately goes “ah yes, the teeth and jaws of the skull-face.”The whole thing is weird, especially since usually your brain doesn’t perceive a decoy face AS a decoy, it just registers face or not-face; but then mine immediately falls for a different and probably unintended trick on the other side.
>>9278778This is the first time I see those rats correctly, and I'm probably going to go right back to seeing the ears as eyes.>>9278787I never got confused on this one. They always looked like some kind of curled up bug to me.

>>9286425>Sabin's Japanese name マッシュ could be either "Mash" or "Matthew" and both would make perfect sense in context.I imagine that's the joke. Japanese love their puns.
>>9286425>It's why translating the names can be such a pain in the assYeah, and for the record it's also why people who argue over "correct" name translation of videogame characters are annoying as fuck. It's just a name. Terra is not a real person, you can't ask her if she'd be prefer you called her Tina. Devs rarely give a fuck what some foreigner calls the character so long as they paid for the game. It's far more important to be consistent about whatever translated name you choose. The only way to truly fuck up and be wrong is to change the name between versions or editions.

The parallel is obvious. It would be like pretending that a platformer with someone wearing overalls and a mustache in 1986 isn't riffing on Super Mario.
>>9288468It's a shame that they didn't make Marle and Lucca's strength stat relevant to when they hit enemies at close range. It would have made things a bit more interesting than just relying on HIT for everything.

>>9280102Speaking of Lufia 2, the German version even ended up with a fuck-up in its translation due to a misinterpreted sprite. >>9289085It's so much worse anon, what makes you think the area above Bowser's nose is shaped that way? Just so you can look at it without being confused? The original is fine and if you see him as crosseyed in any way your brain just isn't working properly. Yours looks dopey as hell.
>>9288151Speaking of those fuckers, I always thought the sprite of their eyes peeking out from the lava looked kinda like a little head with a mouth. I might've thought it looked like the white plant enemies from SMB3 that jump up to bite you.

>>9290543Not him. but making it so you can see both pupils does look a lot better. The original sprite's snout seems oddly shaped and uneven in comparison.
>>9290543making things see-through for the sake of showing eyes is a long-running eastern art tradition, it gets expressions across instantaneously much easier. it doesn't make perfect sense with the perspective but it's far easier to read in a single moment, versus needing to process it for a second and fill in the missing blank.

>>9283643holy shit what an awful sprite
>>9296885>i thought it was a tiger head because egyptTigers are from India, dude...
>>9283204>>9283313I've commented on this before, but I'm under the impression an artist here was colour blind.
>>9297339It's more likely the sprites were based on earlier models and they redid the promo art later on. That's why the original SNES sprites for Tales of Phantasia look nothing like the character art. The designs were revised later on and it was too late to change all the sprites so they just ran with it, eventually updating everything in the remakes.
>>9297378It's awfully convenient that the change corresponds exactly to red-green colourblindness, and the last time I pointed it out, a colour blind anon responded in confusion that he cannot see a discrepancy between the artwork and the sprite.
>>9297392It's possible. But the sprite and artwork are different in ways beyond just the color. It's also not the only example of weird spritework in that game. I'm sure back then things like that could happen since it was often one person doing the bulk of a task so you wouldn't get a lot of eyes on something until it was done. "Oh...that's the wrong color...shit but we're on a schedule so just put it in anyway."
>>9297397Oh, and it also could have been a necessity because of system limitations. I wouldn't be surprised if they started with a bunch of sprites and realized that they exceeded the SNES's palette limits in certain circumstances so they'd have to change things on the fly. I wouldn't be surprised if that's how Link ended up with pink hair.

>>9298476Didn't we piece together a month ago that Chrono Trigger is actually unused portions of what would have been the SNES CD version of Secret of Mana?
>>9298476>>9298413>Rondo of Blood>UnfinishedDo tell? I assumed its fractured nature had more to do with branching paths and the like.
>>9298952I don't remember that thread but would be interested in that info.
>>9298957Well there is this one glaring example. A portal looking thing that only Maria has access to and does nothing.
>>9299041>>9298957Another one would be the brown bricks in the background of stage 5'. The entire section is just that one brown brick repeated all over the background. Then, if you check the beta version of the version, that same brown brick used to be all over stage 3 before they detailed the place. In other words, the detailing was done in stage 3 but not 5'. Most of 5' is pretty bad, being just a series of non connected segments re-using backgrounds/areas from other levels, and it doesn't even have a boss.Another example would be 2', at the very start of the stage there is a secret exit on the bottom left side which leads.... to the exact same place as the alt exit at the bottom end of the stage. Thus rendering the entire stage pointless. That 3rd exit only makes sense if it was to lead somewhere else.
>>9299039IIRC>Part of the team at Square wanted to make FFIV a big ass FDS game under their DOG label>The higher ups nixed the idea, as they wanted FFIV to be one of the first games released on the Super Fami>They did let the team make the game as its own thing, though>That game was going to be called Seiken Densetsu Excalibur>The FDS was too dead in the water for them to want to keep working on it, so they ported as much as they could to the GameBoy and released the original Seiken Densetsu>Meanwhile, Square wanted to release another big game when they found out about the SNES CD, so they wanted to revive the original idea for SD Excalibur>Halfway through development, Nintendo and Sony had their spat and there would be no CD add-on>Square, not wanting to waste that devtime, took the basic skeleton of the game, spruced it up, and released it as Secret of Mana, while letting some of the wilder ideas get cobbled together for a future release, which would become Chrono Trigger
>>9299109Devs having unused ideas that end up being used in a next game is hardly "game B is made of unused portions of game A", it's more like "standard practices".
>>9299179In this case, I think it was literally suppose to be that everything related to Frog and Magnus were literally in Secret of Mana wholesale, but ended up becoming the backbone of Chrono Trigger. The time travel mechanic was even suppose to be how they tied all of the left over setting pieces together.
>>9299109Seiken Densetsu: The Emergence of Excalibur was in development much earlier. We're talking 1987. It was going to be a massive Disk System game that would've spanned five disks. When it got canceled, Square asked people to keep their preorders for Final Fantasy instead. It's generally believed that it has nothing in common with the eventual Seiken Densetsu / Mana except for the trademark. Secret of Mana uses a version of the battle system that was planned for Final Fantasy IV* that was rejected in favor of the active turned-based option. Chrono Trigger was known for supposedly taking unused ideas from the CD version of Secret of Mana (itself having the workimg title "Chrono Trigger") and the SNES version of Final Fantasy VII. That may be party why Crono resembles Randy.*I'm still unsure if this was planned for the reeased SNES Final Fantasy IV or the canceled NES Final Fantasy IV, which were different games (IV was originally "V" but was set to release before IV anyway so NES IV was doomed from the start).
>>9299543> was in development much earlierThat solves that question, then. A lot of people were confused in the older thread as to why a DOG title was still being made in 1989.

>>9303471True; they're suppose to be armadillos. I think the scariest part of it was that, since they don't stand around for too long, I assumed their eyes were just hanging on springs.
>>9303473You don't see how that's a bird with spread wings and a chest of fluffy, puffy feathers?
>>9293213Nah you could use AV on NES, but not Master System or MD

>>9298889No I need games to look pixel perfect through RGB so they're identical to my LCD TV I already have except with shitty thick black scanlines and flickering. I will spend thousands of dollars on this and piss my wife off, so I gotta go on messageboards and tell everybody to do the same
>>9300573>celestinaWhat's that mean>desperatelyTina is a lame name and also a nickname for meth. If my wife wanted to name our daughter Tina I would kill her and the child
>>9298889Try telling that to the PVM crowd.
>>9277090This is amazing
>>9276334that sprite were made for scanlines right?
>>9303515>What's that meanDepending on who you ask, it's either a play on words referencing that Celes and Tina are "instruments of the empire" based on the name of this musical device: https://johnwolff.id.au/mechmusic/Celestina/Celestina.htmOr it's a reference to a late 15th century Spanish novel called La Celestina.Take your pick, I'm not sure there are any actual official primary sources which prove one or the other to be true but people really love talking about this bit of speculation.
I thought that Smash Daisaku's beard was a collar.

>>9282617because you had the super mario bros/duck hunt combo cart
>>9276334Eyes or big teeth? Also this game was like a fever dream, specially if you played the Mario bootleg. Great music though.
>>9299041Has anyone asked Koji Igarashi about any of this? Didn't his wife worked on the game, or something?
