well, i'm planning on making one out of a bluetooth keyboard and a phone, you see, a lot of anons were posting over the years how a "silder keyboard case" for the iphone 6 was a perfect donor for the purpose of making any modern phone slider, however those cases are rarer by the day and the keyboard gets dwarfed with today phone sizes, so i'm making one with a diy slider system, gimme 3 hours to get back home and i'll post my progress

>>
>>9254230
>care to elaborate?
I had a lot of issues with SNES and GBA when I got it, and even though it's better now, the screen isn't enough to make it worth the trouble. I'd rather just throw games on and play at this point.
Depending on settings and emulator, GBA is supposedly fine now, but SNES still has issues with harder to run games.
PS1 and PSP are doable through Adrenaline if you don't mind them running at PSP native resolution, there are ways to get some stuff working at native res, but compatibility is lower for that.
I got mine to mess around with when they were cheaper, but for what it looks like they're going for now, it doesn't seem worth getting one unless you're interested in Vita games.
>it's pretty darn nice but only if you want t use it on handheld mode
That's how I use it most of the time anyways.
>if you want to use it wirelessly, i suggest getting one of those rgb ones that work wirelessly, the copycat ones even have rumble

I got you f-a-m, i ordered a pair of these, waiting for them to arrive, i researched a lot on them; just make sure to not buy the black version with just rgb sticks, get the one with rgb sticks AND those rgb tiny bars at the front or any one from the 2 translucent options, as the "just rgb sticks" one is the v1 and all of the others are a v2; changes? If you aren't taking the piss, the Pro has the exact same battery as the Lite with a less power-efficient chip. What you're seeing here is the effect of the new power hungry screen on the Lite pulling it below a Pro with the original screen. A Pro with the new screen would be a third line on that graph going even lower.

A more modern gamepad (maybe something like the 8bitdo pro plus that I have) with a screen in the middle that's bigger than the RG351P, or at least a handheld that's comfortable on the hands. That can also run some shit better maybe. Maybe.

I'll confess, I find at least the RG351P to be a little uncomfortable when playing things that use shoulder buttons very often. It's not even the fact they're in line, R1 and L1 are just not great to press and most of the time I have to press a little hard or it doesn't register (I do have spare switches that are exactly the same size for these, but I'm not soldering something that's just not as soft). I'm very used to more modern gamepads with handles and I use shoulder buttons often with games that have a dash or speed up function and it's a genuine pain. I think this handheld is good for some types of games still (I played a lot of randomized Minish Cap lately on it and some battle network) but it's just not what I would call comfy. I don't know how I spent so many hours on a DS lite back then, now I just want to play some super metroid romhack on the big screen instead of this, even if it's fully capable. I thought of grabbing a grip for it but I live in europe and prices for 3D printing are pretty abusive, I don't think putting 50€ or more on an accessory for a console I got for 80€ is that great of an investment.

Doesn't matter if you're playing a game or not, they show up when the screen is dark. My point is that if you have one already, go ahead and homebrew it for retro games, but buying one today because of the screen is just silly. You can do much better for a lot cheaper

The Pocket's strength is it's plain, predictable performance. FF6 Advance chugs during the intro with the default emulator on the RG351MP. I had to go test each available emulator until I found one (gpSP) that didn't drop below 60. Playing whack a mole with software emulators is tedious and boring. The Pocket "just works" and the screen is insane.

All that said, fast forward and save states would be great.

Finally got a NeoGeo Pocket Color, just need to mod it to make it usable. And I finally got a Gameboy Micro. Excellent prices on both. The Gameboy Micro is so weird... I hate how you have to click the shoulder buttons over the top instead of being able to knock the sides.

>DS/3DS are still the best devices to play those games
hahaha absolutely not. You're better off playing almost anywhere else because of the dogshit screens, resolution, controls, and ergonomics.
>>
>>9260701
I realize there are better examples of all of those, but play a game that leans into the gimmicks of the device (touch, multi touch, drawing, blowing, closing the lid, turning the device) and you'll see that emulators fall short of the original experience.
>inb4 games with those gimmicks sucked
Ace Attorney, Hotel Dusk, Professor Layton all had em and they're all great games
>>
>>9260816
I love AA but none of those gimmicks are any fun. You can reproduce some or even all of those gimmicks depending on the device you're emulating on, but I really have zero desire to blow in my mic or touch the screen directly.
>>
>>9260823
Agreed, especially blowing, that sucked.
Those were the weakest parts of otherwise great games. I'm glad the blowing was removed from the HD versions of AA.
I did like turning the DS like a book for Hotel Dusk and I did like drawing with the stylus, but I wish it had pressure sensitivity like a Wacom.

The guy with 4 vitas claims they're all perfect, what more can you say.

Getting back on topic, if you already have one they're not a terrible choice for retro gayman. But for the price they're massively outperformed by chink handhelds, which also don't have to deal with vita2sd's that randomly reformat themselves. They had bad battery life that's only gotten worse with 10 years of age which can't be replaced, they're big and heavy, and they have godawful UI. The only real selling points are the buttons (not the shitty analog sticks), which a lot of chink handhelds just ended up cloning.

I mean, we're talking about a chip a bit worse than what was in the iPad 2 in 2011 which was discontinued by Apple sooner than the Vita in 2016. Mobile chips have moved leaps and bounds since then even for devices sub $100 which can easily outpace chips that old.

>>9262587
So you don't want a solution, but prefer to complain. Ok.
>>
>>9262610
What? The solution is to use something that can actually emulate games well, not the vita.

>>
>>9263767
It's not one of yuji naka's best games, but it's perfectly serviceable. Great music and character designs. Memes killed the game before it had a chance, years from now it'll be looked back on as a hidden gem like most of naka's non-sonic games.

>>
>>9262574
Romhacks on the vita using the updated fire red engine or intense custom music don't run well. Since rad red only uses the updated engine, it now run perfectly on gpsp retroarch. (You don't need to overclock) Any games with custom music like clover or unbound will struggle, but strangely enough, games in the emerald decomp play fine using arch and mgba.

OP here, i can confirm the game is truly shit, i could write pages upon pages of shit about it but here's the shit that put me off, bare in mind i did play like 14 hours trying to 100% and just stopped playing because of the bullshit:

>first off, the game doesn't explain shit about the plot, you don't know why you are in a dreamworld and you don't know shit about what i assume is the pleaple having the dreams

>they force drama by wanting you to feel bad about literal who's you've met 3 seconds ago, most of these fags don't even have a name (eg. subtitles say: "kid" "old man" etc.)

>all the face buttons on the controller only serve as the action button, but that is trash since when you have no costumes put-on you can jump, pretty nice right? WRONG because once you use a costume the jump button becomes whatever the costume is meant to do, so no jumping on normal ledges if you don't have a jumping costume which by the way changing costumes is buggy AF

>excess of costumes is a problem as well, "OH LOOK a dragon costume that launches fire, awesome maybe i can lit those candles at the beginning of the level... NO ONLY THE FIRE FROM THE CANDLE COSTUME IS PROGRAMMED TO DO THAT, YOU HAVE TO USE THE CANDLE COSTUME YOU GET IN 3 MORE LEVELS ARRRGHHH (they are so boring you literally forget about that stuff)

Seriously this thing is a nice upgrade over the RP2+. It's got a decent weight, the buttons are nice and clicky like an SP, and the build quality is much nicer on this unit. Well done Retroid. I fucking hated my RP2+ but the RP3 is great. Eh, I'm good. My only gripes with RG351P are that it handles only a few PSP games and it's uncomfortable for me to play games require constant use of analog sticks and triggers. I got a 3D printed grip for the latter, it's just slightly off for my hands. So a better grip, I guess?

Massive shot in the dark, but does anyone know of an Android emulator capable of running Neo-Geo games that can map macros like B+C and A+C?

Retroarch cores have a preconfigured mapping for A+B, C+D, A+B+C, and B+C+D, but nothing else and the mappings can't be made. I tried NEO.Emu and that was even worse because it neither allowed multi-button mapping nor did it have any premade. I also tried MAME4Droid and didn't see any options for this, but I may have just missed it.

RG351M, solid build quality, my preferred button layout, screen is perfect for GBA, which is most of what I play, does everything else I need it to do (GB/GBC/Wonderswan/GameGear/NeoGeo/Lynx) and could even do more than that if I wanted, built in wifi for downloading metadata and adding roms without fiddling with SD cards whatsoever

Just a question regarding multiple .BIN tracks.
How do you guys deal with them? My anbernic won't read them properly (or maybe it was just a one off idk), it starts vibrating non-stop until I restart the console so to avoid damaging it I haven't tried others.
Do you make the many .BIN files into a single one with some program?

I hope someone can help me here. I recently scratched the lens on my AGS-101 and I'm seriously considering buying a drop-in IPS replacement just because I've already replaced the lens once and it was a pain in the dick.

The main question I wanna ask is, how bright is the IPS on mid settings compared to the 101 on high brightness? For the life of me I can't find any direct comparisons, at least not for brightness. The only comparisons I can find are either just showcasing response time, or don't do a direct side by side comparison at all. Since I can't really solder at the moment, that means I'll be stuck with that middling brightness and since I tend to prefer the brighter setting on my GBA, I'd like to know if I'm potentially getting a downgrade in that department.

Also if anyone could tell me about the power draw on that middling brightness, that'd also be great.
>>
>>9282717
Why would you replace a good screen with a completely soulless one? Just spend 2 bucks on a new lens.
>>
>>9282720
Because I have a stick up my ass about alignment and dust and I don't want to spend hours fiddling with a new lens just like the last time I replaced it.
>>
>>9282725
But you'll have to do that anyway if you put a shit IPS screen in?

Anyway, I replaced my GBC lens today. Took 5 minutes, just got a craft knife in the gap to prise it up, slid the knife around it, and then used my headlamp to check the screen for dust before fitting a nice new glass one. Came out almost perfect, there's a little spot of something in the LED hole but I don't care at all about that.
>>
>>9282730
>But you'll have to do that anyway if you put a shit IPS screen in?
No? SP IPS screens come with the lens already attached, as far as I know.
>>
>>9282732
>No? SP IPS screens come with the lens already attached, as far as I know.
only if you get a laminated kit, but unless you ge an ips ready shell you'll spend half an hour trimming your shell for th sccreen to fit, not to mention you'd have to buy a bracket for the screen if you decide not to get the ips ready shell so you can align the screen properly
>>
>>9282732
Ah, you're right. I just figured they were like every other GB, I've never looked too closely at one because they're too small for my hands anyway.
>>
>>9282747
The shell I'm planning to put it in is a custom shell made to easily be cut, so that shouldn't be too much of an issue. Doing an inside cut is less of an issue because I won't have to look at it when it's all said and done.

>>9282748
Bit of an aside, but I never understood this complaint about the SP. I've got big hands, too, but maybe I'm just acclimated to its size since I'd been playing small handhelds my whole life.
>>
>>9282771
I've got small hands, but I find the SP especially uncomfortable to play. Honestly, the base GBA isn't very comfortable, but with a grip it's a little better.

I've yet to find a handheld actually built for human hands. You'd think it'd be pretty easy, I mean 95% of controllers on the market feel good in the hand, but nobody has figured out how to make a handheld yet.
>>
>>9282794
Problem with more ergonomic designs is that they're not very good for portability. That's what appears to be the issue for me, though really it's been a non-issue for me.

I've noticed I don't really have a full grip when I play my SP. I tend to hold it with mainly the tips of my fingers rather than wrapping my full hands around it, and I probably play a lot of handhelds that way, so they never really feel too cramped for me. Most of the time.

DS lite and later d-pads feel super cramped to me, very unpleasant to press and make my thumb hurt after a bit. Something about the DS lite style d-pad just doesn't work for me at all.
>>
>>9282717
Yeah. I replaced the lens on my ags-101 once and tried to use canned air to get the dust out from behind the screen and it fucked up the Adhesive or something so it migrated onto the back of the lens so I had it replace it again. Which went well but there is a very tiny fingerprint ever so slightly at the top of the lens that does not touch the screen, no dust though.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xm06GixEW48
>>
>>9282812
I learned the hard way with an old PSP 1000 to keep some canned air handy when opening up handhelds. It helps a ton but it's still a pain in the dick and I'd rather avoid it if I can, hence why I'm considering an IPS meme. Despite the fact that I'd really miss the "screen door" effect on the 101 screen.

I just use q-tips, they work great at removing little bits of dust. I'll never understand the IPS meme, if you wanted a shitty phone screen totally unsuited for the actual device, why wouldn't you just get a controller for your phone?
>>
>>9282950
>at least is a sandisk
Of course it will be a SanDisk or Samsung, but I was wondering if more speed (Extreme) or more endurance (from my own experience in dashcam and RPi) was useful, I don't know if the game/console read a lot on the SD card.
>>
>>9283142
I already ordered a lens replacement, so I guess you win for now anon. Saw a white lens and I just couldn't pass it up. As for the appeal of IPS, I can see some benefits despite my preference for that screen door effect on the 101s. Deeper colors. Better pixel response time. That kind of thing. AGS-101 screens are kinda on the blurry side, but you get used to it. Wish there was a screen that'd give me my segmented pixels, better response time, and good brightness all in one.

I will try q-tips I guess but the real issue is just how easy it is to get dust back into it once you've removed it.

I can understand the response time argument for something with a passive matrix like the original GB that shit was blur city. But for stuff like the GBC and GBA? How fucking fast do you need the screen? Some slight blurring on fast moving sprites is hardly the end of the world. As for colors, they're the wrong ones. Early GBA games wind up looking garish on the AGS screens because the colors were designed for a display without a backlight, you think those colors aren't going to get even more fucked up on IPS?

At the end of the day though, the awful pixel scaling on IPS displays is what kills them for good. I've seen a couple for other devices that try to add back in a simple pixel border, they don't really work. The only handheld I've actually seen get scaling right is Analogue Pocket because it has a decent resolution screen, but that thing has dogshit ergonomics. If they made another one in a sensible shape for human hands, and cut out the pointless fucking cart slot, I'd buy one in a heartbeat. Who knows, maybe the chinks will eventually realise that people want a good reproduction of the original screen, not bilinear cancer.
>>
>>9283256
Yes. I owned one and it was a pretty underpowered phone. And while the controls were better than nothing, they weren't anything special either.
>>
>>9283365
>slight blurring
It's more than slight. The problem is it's a good deal worse than the AGS-001, the original GBA, and either of the DS models that support BC. Can't say for the micro since I've never touched it, but every other (official) GBA display has been better with motion blur than the 101s.

>cut out the pointless fucking cart slot
That would defeat the entire point of the pocket, analogue is catering to physicalfags who want no fuss hardware to play their shit on.
>>
>>9283396
There's no singular "entire point" to the analogue pocket, but if there was it'd be the FPGA replication before the ability to play gayboy carts.
>>
>>9283396
>It's more than slight.
I don't know, it's never really bothered me. I fit a 32 pin screen in a 40 pin mobo or something first and that thing was ghost city though, unplayable. Most games don't use fast scrolling to begin with.

>That would defeat the entire point of the pocket,
Analogue's business model WAS just ripping people off by selling them the exact same FPGA chip 10 times with a different cart slot attached, but who knows what it is now. I'm guessing they're going to pivot, the pocket is a lot more enticing than all their other junk, and anyone with a brain just gets a MiSTer instead of their home "consoles".
>>
>>9283427
Analogue's whole business has been built around selling machines to play old cartridges. Before they even started doing FPGAs, they were gutting old hardware and selling them in new shells with mods. The original NT was real NES hardware IIRC and before that they were doing Neo Geos.

FPGAs ended up being a lot cheaper for everyone and just as good, that's why they moved to that.

>>9283432
It bothers the hell out of me sometimes. Even in something like Pokemon. It's the kind of thing I easily notice.
>Analogue's business model WAS just ripping people off by selling them the exact same FPGA chip 10 times with a different cart slot attached
Read above. They were around before they even messed with FPGAs.
>anyone with a brain just gets a MiSTer instead of their home "consoles".
Call me when a MiSTer can read cartridges. No, really. I'm interested. But ripping cartridges doesn't count for my autism.
>>
>>9283436
The FPGA is what sets it apart from its previous products and all the other devices that can play carts. So in that sense I would say it's closer to being the "entire point" than just playing gayboy carts.
>>
>>9283436
>FPGAs ended up being a lot cheaper for everyone
Cheaper for Analogue, not the consumer.

>Call me when a MiSTer can read cartridges
I'm sure if anyone cared enough, it wouldn't be that tough to implement. But the vast majority of people don't care about cart support, a menu is faster and easier. Same reason flashcarts are popular, why would I bother going through my shelf full of games when I can just pick the letter and start playing?
>>
>>9283443
No, what sets it apart is the ability to play their cartridges on modern displays without jumping through hoops. That's been what they've sold the entire time.

>>9283446
>Cheaper for Analogue, not the consumer.
Cheaper for the consumer, too. The original NT was $500 and a part of the reason it was so ungodly expensive was because they were cannibalizing real hardware and doing extensive modifications to it. The NT mini, their first FPGA IIRC, was similarly priced so yeah they did try to jew people but their subsequent releases were more reasonably priced with the Super NT, the Mega SG, and the Pocket all being closer to $200. You can still say it's too much for your liking, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper than their older offerings and that's objective fact.

>But the vast majority of people don't care about cart support, a menu is faster and easier. Same reason flashcarts are popular, why would I bother going through my shelf full of games when I can just pick the letter and start playing?
Cool, then don't buy Analogue products. They're not for you. Why would you even buy a Pocket when a chink emulation handheld can do more for half the price?
>>
>zoomer handheld
>4000 mah battery
>barely lasts 6 hours when it's new, will quickly disintegrate down to 3 hours, will eventually be unplayable and all replacement batteries will last a month before they explode while costing 20 bucks a pop, epitome of e-waste junk
>needs to be plugged in to charge constantly, might as well come with the wire attached

>boomer handheld
>single battery lasts 15 hours, decent modern li-on cell (2500mah) will last you well over 20
>can be swapped out in 2 seconds, used batteries can be charged whenever you want, will be available until society crumbles

Why did technology regress so hard, anyway? The game gear lost the handheld war.
>>
>>9283461
>Why would you even buy a Pocket when a chink emulation handheld can do more for half the price?
I like the screen filters. I wouldn't buy any of the other chink emulation handhelds on the market, if I wanted to play games on an ugly LCD that was unsuited to the system on the go I'd just use my phone, it's free.

>what sets it apart is the ability to play their cartridges on modern displays
While this might be important to you, I don't think it's that popular a feature. Most people like the "jailbreaks", using carts is more of a justification than a popular feature, and as game prices keep going up cart slots are just going to keep getting less and less popular.
>>
>>9283502
>While this might be important to you, I don't think it's that popular a feature.
If this were true then everyone would just be playing emulators with CRT filters instead or running their pis through CRTs.

Analogue caters to physicalfags and jailbreaking their devices is secondary to that. There's a whole market for people who want to play their cartridges on original hardware or something that ACTS like original hardware.
>>
>>9283512
I think the market of people who want to play "original" hardware with original carts on modern screens is pretty low, Analogue produces systems in small batches to avoid unsold stock.
>>
>>9283524
It's more that they have to complete with CRTs, line doublers, scalers, and people who just don't fucking care and hook their consoles up outright. And your solution is making them compete with chink handhelds instead.
>>

>Call me when a MiSTer can read cartridges.
it can read commodore 64 floppies so cadts wont be too far off
>>
>>9283528
>And your solution is making them compete with chink handhelds instead.
200 bucks for a home system is insane when a MiSTer will run you 300 bucks max and covers everything they've made to date and another half a dozen systems. I think there's a reason the Duo has been endlessly delayed, they'd rather sell Pockets.

Portable FPGA seems like a much better market, they have no competitors and open source projects aren't really conducive to getting pretty little plastic boxes in a neat form factor.
>>
>>9283557
$300 for an FPGA is insane when you can pay $100 for something that can even emulate some PS2 games. See where that line of logic goes?

You say no one cares about playing physical games, but I'd say the market for people willing to pay that much for a digital only machine that can only play thirty year old 2D games is even smaller. There's no way about it, if the pocket went completely digital it'd be competing with chink emulation handhelds and people would be asking why for $200 it can't run dolphin.
>>
>>9283571
100 bucks is insane when you can run retroarch for free.

You think taking off the cart slot would have everyone running around screaming about how it can't run dolphin? Nobody expects MiSTer to, although maybe I'm overestimating the IQ of the kind of person who spends 200 bucks on an FPGA that can't be reprogrammed and is essentially a glorified SOAC.
>>
>>9283576
>100 bucks is insane when you can run retroarch for free.
Correct. And that's where this whole rabbithole goes, there's not any point in an FPGA if you can run cartridges from it IMO. Especially given the hardware it covers so far, existing emulators are more than competent enough to give an adequate, or even better experience and you can use as many screen filters as you want.

So what's the point of bitching about a cartridge slot in a product you wouldn't even bother buying to begin with? You just want to mindlessly shit on the people who are actually interested in playing their old cartridges?
>>
>>9283490
Because zoomer handheld is actually running Linux and can emulate every system under the sun, with support for cheats, save states, filters, and so on.
>>
>>9283591
>there's not any point in an FPGA if you can run cartridges from it IMO
Most people would disagree with you here.

>You just want to mindlessly shit on the people who are actually interested in playing their old cartridges?
I mean, if you were actually interested in playing your "old" cartridges, you'd still have your "old" system. You wouldn't need some modern FPGA junk. What you probably have is some kind of weird nostalgia for sliding carts into slots, which I'll never understand because half the time it was met with the game just not working.

>So what's the point of bitching about a cartridge slot in a product you wouldn't even bother buying to begin with?
If it was better designed, I probably would buy one. The cart slot isn't even a deal breaker or anything, I'd buy one in a proper form factor with or without one, I'd just prefer without because it adds pointless bulk.
>>
>>9283617
>Most people would disagree with you here.
Market says otherwise.

>I mean, if you were actually interested in playing your "old" cartridges, you'd still have your "old" system.
This statement shows a fundamental lack of understanding why such products even exist. Lot of people buying this shit have tried old hardware and found it lacking for one reason or another.
>old consoles display like shit on modern TVs without a box to upscale them
>old handhelds have outdated displays with no backlighting
>either of these issues can be solved on original hardware, but require costly modifications and more work(soldering) than the average person is even comfortable with doing
>can pay someone else to do it but it'll still cost an arm and a leg
And that's where the niche is. The people who want to play their old games but don't want to emulate, don't want to use CRTs, and don't want to do the work to make the old hardware better. Of course it's kinda stupid, but the average consumer is kinda stupid anyways.

>I'd buy one in a proper form factor
I'm actually a little curious, what would be a good form factor for you? The Pocket doesn't look too bad to me, but I hear the triggers are pretty awful where they're placed. Wouldn't know since I've never had one in hand.

Handheld with the power and control scheme for at least ps2/gc/xbox era games. My ancient year old $75 walmart poorphone could handle n64, ps1, psp... my new $100 poorphone has better specs and could probably do some of what I want with a cheap bluetooth controller. I don't want that, but it still means I'm not spending more than I ever paid for a cell phone, a gamecube, a ps2, an xbox, an n64, and so on and so forth, for a device to fulfill the functions those ones did 20 years ago.

When I was in school my parents had to buy a stupidly expensive TI calculator, and they wouldn't have it secondhand (love you mom & dad)... and they paid for a stupidly expensive gps, and a radio, and a computer, and my game systems, and so on and so forth. By the logic of handheld marketeers, a basic smarthphone should be worth approximately 6 gorillion dollars. Newsflash: it's not. Just like your chinese handheld spoof device is not worth the combined value of every vibeo game and console in existence. That $50 dollar flash cart really burned me up on this point. It was the cheapest I could find and I know for a fact both as a hobbyist and professional that it cost fuckall for the chip and custom shell. >How did they fucked it up so hard?
They didn't. The N-Gage was honestly a great device, solid tried and tested OS, good battery life, and it was more graphically impressive than the GBA.

The problem was they just didn't have the games to back it up. Nobody did, Nintendo held the whole market so nobody wanted to work on anything else.

The Zodiac was a very similar concept. It was a palm PDA, just with buttons. Again, no games, just a few ports and enhanced versions of existing palm titles. Kind of weird to hold, but the case was very nice and I liked the stick and 8 way menuing, it was far superior to the PSP's shitty nub or the awful 3DS circle pad.

One thing of note is that both systems were completely trivial to pirate on. All you needed was a memory card and the internet, so devs were even more reluctant to release games for a system with rampant piracy.

>Why no one is trying to revive the concept?
Because the market has spoken, and the market says everyone wants soulless rectangular slabs without any buttons. Touchscreens killed the phone market, no thought is ever given to UI. Take something like Samsung's S-pen. Seems simple enough, right? It's just a fucking pen. Doesn't work on 80% of android applications. Sometimes it works just for scrolling but you can't use it to interact with anything. The total lack of input standards mean you'd have to write your own OS, and everything people want on their phone is locked to the big 2 OSes. Either you license android, or your device fails.

For the price you're paying it's very underwhelming and the software obviously isn't as good as Linux/Android, but even more than that the device is simply too fucking big and the options for a d-pad suck.

Any GBA Micro sized emulation platforms with enough buttons for 16-bit consoles and up?

These are great with standalone retro emulators but retroarch runs like trash on it

RG300X should work depending on what consoles you're talking about.

Not great for the price if you're getting it mostly for emulation, and unless you get an unpatched one that you can hack with a jig, you'll be spending as much as a Steam Deck when you include the modchip cost.
If you're already getting one for Switch stuff it'd be fine, just don't expect much more than a cheap Chinese handheld. What systems were you planning on emulating on it?
>>
>>9284997
Sadly the Pinephone keyboard isn't great. Doesn't feel anywhere near as solid as any of the PC phones that have launched. It's serviceable for sure but the form factor of turning your phone into a dedicated clamshell pda is a huge downgrade from the astroslide, and really does feel more like something you use only for when you're working away from your computer.

>>9283968
Anything, really. I spent years playing emulated snes/gb/gba games with a keyboard, not to mention it works great for sdvx clones.

How’s the Switch for emulation? I’ve been thinking of hacking mine and if it can emulate well that’d be a huge pro for me. I’m assuming it’s up to 5th gen only, or can you run Dolphin on it too?
>>
>>9285868
Only PS1 works well out of the 5th gen consoles, as far as I know. Some N64 works, but I didn't have much luck outside of a hacked version of the official emulator. A few Saturn games work through injects into the Cotton emulator, but input lag is really bad.
You can supposedly get a few games working in Dolphin if you're running Android with a pretty big overclock, but I never bothered trying.
You've already got it though, and assuming it's an unpatched one, they're pretty easy to hack, so there's no reason not to go ahead and hack it. You can always boot back into sysnand for any legit stuff you want to play.

Why not get a steam deck if you want a dedicated device, switch can't emu worth shit
>>
>>9283968
Op here, not that anon but allmost all games that supprt keyboard become easier funnier to play witha keyboard, i know it's a bit pit of the boards' theme but some native android games become excelent with physical buttons, on the top of my head i can think of retro city rampage, death road to canada and the gta ports; all of those have native keyboard / gamepad support
>>9285083
>>9285868
Meh, don't mind the other dudes, if you install lineage os the switch can run some ps2/gc games pretty nice; even some 2d wii games such as muramasa

Anyone planning to get this book? It looks quite interesting.
>>

Too much emphasis on GBA with all 3 models fully in frame while NGPC barely has one of its corners in the frame. It's shit, cringe, and I hate it.

It's written by the fucking Retro Dodo guy. I hate his writing style. Every time I open one of his articles I regret it. They're almost all fluff with little substance.
>>
>>9287456
It's a little boring. These days I'm far more interested in the non-nintendo handhelds.

There are other people who have contributed to the book like ashens and Guru Larry

Yeah his writing is not great, Retro Game Corops or Taki make way more informative articles and videos

They were envisioning a world where the Steam Deck didn't exist and they didn't change the plan they had at the start of the design phase which is mindboggling. It's DOA.

Ordered a GBA with IPS V2 screen mod today, has a nice SNES theme to it. Also ordered an Everdrive GB X7 (I already have an Everdrive GBA X5 and also an EZ Flash Omega). I already have a couple of GBA SPs, one is an AGS-101 that I reshelled with a repro NES case (pic related, my two SPs and some of my GBA games), but I've been wanting an original model with the IPS V2 screen for a while now and decided to take the leap. Looking forward to playing some comfy Game Boy games, hopefully this weekend.

Other shit I have: Steam Deck, RG350M, RG351V, both models of Vita, two n3DS XLs and one n3DS small size, a bunch of DS Lites and one DS phat, a few Switches (one OLED), a GB Micro, a GB Pocket, a Game Gear, a Virtual Boy (doesn't work anymore, has that shitty glue issue), and a PSP 2000. Lately I've been wanting to buy the SNES Edition n3DS XL but they're quite expensive. I'd also like to get a Neo Geo Pocket Color, I have a couple of games for it but never picked up the system while it was still cheap.

I'm definetely getting one... when they're at the 90% discount...

I'm probably getting the laminated ITA kit and reshelling mine once I'm sure they've worked out all of the issues with it. Couldn't see myself doing it if I already had 2 SPs and a Micro though.

>>9288092
Even without the Steam Deck there are other Android handhelds that do the same thing for a third of the price. It doesn't even have WiFi 6.
>>9288139
You will not be waiting very long. Lmao.
>>
>>9288442
>It doesn't even have WiFi 6
Seriously? Wasn't the whole fucking point of this device streaming? Might as well just get an RP3 to stream on at that point. I know you can't actually get one atm, but a $225 Odin Lite is dramatically less hideous than the Logitech and actually has Wifi 6.
>>
>>9288172
Why is it foot-fungus-yellow?
>>
>>9288469
Yup. Streaming HANDHELD and it has no WiFi 6 or 5G connectivity. This thing is so fucking DOA. Lmao.
It does run Android though so you could use it as a overpriced (and under powered for the price tag) emulation handheld.
