Demos that you played over and over and over for hours.
I did this a lot with demos that came with PC game magazines back in the day but I don't remember them all. I know I played all of the following AbuseTerminal VelocityMotoCross MadnessInterstate 76Comanche 3.0Virtua CopOutwarsDelta Force 2
>>9029097The Twisted Metal 2 demo that came with the first volume of Playstation Underground... I played the absolute SHIT out of that one.
>>9029097*and never bought the actual game for some reason
>>9029097TombaTenchu Stealth AssassinsFuture Cop LAPDKula WorldDevil DiceThe list goes on and on. I was quite content playing demos again and again and again. Some of them gave you enough content that buying the full game would have honestly been a waste of money. The demo I had of Future Cop LAPD gave you the best two battle fields of precinct assault and the option to play it one- or two-player. My friend and I must have sunk fifty hours into that demo.
The MGS2 demo that came with ZOEAlso the 10-minute RE2 demo, as a lad I fully believe the entire game was in the demo and that if I could just get my time down I could see the whole game.
for me it was the saturn demos like virtual on or hardcore 4x4
>>9029097you could literally win the game by cutting your opponents down as they start their prefight ramble. they won't even counter in time. they'll just stand there and be mercilessly chopped down while giving their lines.
>>9029097this one for GTA never got bored.
>>9029627then this one for G-darius and tombi
>>9029631then this one for MGS and the net yaroze collection
>>9029326Put more time in this demo then any of the entries except 2. What an amazing demo!
I played the demo to one game I’ve replayed over but I don’t remember what it was. It was for the PS2, I think, and you were a ninja or some shit. It took place at night, you were running around a little village, fighting enemies, and could jump on the roofs or break down the paper walls (I think, maybe a false memory). The big defining thing I remember is that you had super long hair (I think it was a ponytail?), the magazine I got the demo with said the developer spent hours or days programming the physics for the trailing hair kek.Anyone know wtf I’m taking about?
>>9029097i probably put more time into unreal tournament 2004 & battlefield 2's demos than i did the full games. i love it when they include bots in the demo.>>9029326>as a lad I fully believe the entire game was in the demo and that if I could just get my time down I could see the whole game.speedrunners were able to finish the showcase demo for OOT in brawl which i think has a shorter time limit so unless the demo has a definitive end it could be possible with the right glitches & exploits.
I had some sort of ps1 demo disk but the only fucking game I played was this one over and over like a million times the first few levels or whatever aha
>>9030207Is it this demo disc? This is the one I had that came with Intelligent Qubehttps://game-rave.com/?p=4556
>>9029097I must've beaten that Final Fantasy 8 demo a hundred times. Same with the Resident Evil 2 demo that came with Directors Cut. Even bought gameshark for the explicit purpose of being able to explore maybe 2 additional rooms before it crashed.
>>9029924Shinobi. And you got quite a few details wrong.
>>9030407>Is it this demo disc?oh yup thats the one. played a ton of level 1 area 1 fighting force too aha
i put so many hours into this demo that is just one out of 50 fairly bland missions in the full game.
Syphon Filter, Tomba, Tomb Raider 2, and Parappa
>>9029097The tony Hawk pro skater demo was so good that all the kids on our block were over at our house playing it for more than one afternoon.
>>9029302I loved the Tomba demo too. >>9029326I played the MGS1 and MGS2 demos a ton. I also remember showing off the MGS1 demo to my dad because I was so amazed with it.
>>9029097As a youth, I've played all of these until I had mastered them, OP.> Blasto> Einhander> Gex – Enter the Gecko> Gran Turismo> Hot Shots Golf> Jersey Devil> NBA Shootout ’98> Tekken 3> Tomba!> Tomb Raider II
>>9029170terminal velocity was so damn cool.
>>9030207i remember a ps underground that had this, some star wars fighring game and crash 2. rest were video demos.
my dad used to get pissed hearing this on loophttps://youtu.be/ucRXedLSRhU
>>9031810i wouldve broken that disc and bought you a different game
>>9029170Same. During the period of time before internet and when opportunities for offline pirating were slim, I pretty much subsisted on demos from PC magazines my dad used to buy.I remember playing the Outcast demo a ton, which I think had some kind of tutorial/obstacle course, never did play the full game.
>>9031904Oh and this. You got one super bike and one dirt bike level, pretty much didn't need the full game.
>>9029240same PS Underground disk, right? It also had Bomberman.
>>9031884i had basically everything pirated as well, no excuses lel
>>9029097future cop lapd
>>9032395Raptor: Call of the Shadows
There was a hidden Crash 3 demo on Spyro the Dragon. I have no idea why. But I played that countless times before finally getting a copy of Crash 3.Honestly, demos were an incredible marketing tool. They were how I found out about 90% of games I went on to buy.Why did only the PS1 do this?
>>9032782Good relations with mag publishers and lots of money to keep them good.
>>9029097No one typed Doom, yet? Probably the most reproduced shareware title of all time.
>>9030207>>9030756I had that disk too IQ was the only game that I thought was worthwhile, for replay. Pretty sad state. I was spoiled by PC shareware which gives you 1/3 of the game for free.
>>9031931I think it was this one, I remember the music, and playing mgs1 for the first time.https://thegamesdb.net/game.php?id=42847Interactive CD Sampler Pack Volume 9https://youtu.be/fcFyFWYbg8c?t=2284
Playing MGS1 demo was insane, I was in love
>>9030756YES! those secret demos and videos that you could access by flipping the boxes and putting the code. Must've replayed that Fighting Force demo a hundred times, also rewatched that spawn trailer a ton just for that glorious musichttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9TLXutCYlkthis short track had no business being this fucking good in such a shitty game. The demo's main menu theme was also pretty coolhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uyp_okjh26w
>>9033181Same, the demo was so addicting, there was nothing like it on the system.
>>9033202>tfw my mom bought it for me for christmas>but my dad also bought be bargain bin fishing game with rod peripheral so I had to play that first and pretend to be interested
>>9029924Shinobi for PS2. It was great the full game is much harder. Also had Micro maniacs.
>>9029170i played the motocross madness demo to death man. thanks for posting about it I couldn't remember the name just the low-quality dirt textures and the huge jumps
>>9032782I think it has to do with the fact that CDs had more storage than devs knew what to do with on the PS1, hidden demos must have been a good way to fill unused space.
>>9032782PC magazines had demos too.I guess Cd's were cheap.I wonder if demo discs were full size (700mb) or they had a cheaper lower mb cd for demos?
>>9029097This but it's barely /vr/
>>9033395Yeah now I remember that demo, was it on a next gen cover or am I mistaken? I believe I stole that magazine while grocery shopping, it was under something and I didn't realize till we were at the car.
>>9033395Remember driving to the edge of the map triggering an explosion sound and then it would catapult you back to the center of the map with a good 10 seconds of air time or so?
>>9029097I remember playing the demo for Future Cop L.A.P.D., it was a pretty good, but I never bought the game even decades later when I saw it in a retro shop.
>>9029097The one that came with the saturn there was no money left for a gaem. And for the psx I got a demo even before I got one I member even a gaem wuz there before I got the console.
>>9029097CTR and Evil Zone
>>9033221what game is that?
It makes me sad that the cutscenes were what everyone stole/remembered about this series instead of the break neck pacing of its gameplay or its extremely hard but liberally checkpointed design. Never really saw anything like it again till the indie boom
>>9033760I think this dude is creating a game with ps1 aesthetic.https://twitter.com/BakimboGames
why don't demo cds exist anymore? :(
>>9029358That is not the way of Bushido. Enjoy your bad end for not following the Code.
>>9033631Same, although I did eventually emulate it lol. And honestly, I almost exclusively play the two levels of precinct assault that were in the demo. The other battlefields and the main story mode are good, but Urban Jungle and Proving Ground are the best things in the game.Arguably the first MOBA game. Although Herzog Zwei predates it and is essentially the same game as Future Cop, on Megadrive, in top-down 2D.
>>9034000Exactly. This was key to the game, it punished you for deviating from the samurai code.Obviously the enemy character with a gun didn’t give a shit though.
>>9033970In late 2001 I took on a contract to destroy as many of the unused CDs as possible. There were literally massive landfills of AOL cds. It had to to end. The environment couldn’t take it. It was beyond me in the end.I mean I enjoyed the taste but I just couldn’t eat them all.
>>9033769Nice, looks awesome. ty, anon
