Been playing Alien Soldier, it's pretty fun

Comix zone, my lad
>>
>>8903337
i've been thinkin about playin some genesis games recently
what do you guys set the other two buttons to on a four button controller? i mean i guess not all the games use all six buttons but ya know
>>
>>8903349
L and R usually
>>
>>8903345
Haven't played it at all, seems to have a neat concept

I will never stop seething that Microsoft's bullshit means they don't make six-face-button controllers anymore.
>>
>>8903361
You could use an adapter or third party controller
>>
>>8903368
I mean they don't even make controllers with more than the standard xbox number of buttons now, because Xinput doesn't support that, while DirectInput, which does, is officially deprecated.
If you get a controller with six face buttons today, two of them will just mirror the shoulder buttons because you can't have extra buttons in Xinput.
>>
>>8903375
True, but it's honestly enough to play the type of games you'd want to play. Like the 8bitdo M30 has 2 shoulder buttons, 6 face buttons. Which is enough for 2d games. Still waiting for that Retrobit analog saturn pad tho
>>
>>8903382
The real pisser is I'm on Linux, where our controller subsystem can handle whatever. Wanna build a controller with 100 buttons and axes? Go for it, Linux don't give a fuck. But MS owns the market, so controllers are made to MS' specs, which means ecksbawks style is all you can get now.
>>
The Little Mermaid is alright. I've only played it once but it is a multidirectional shooter with light exploration and a pretty good soundtrack.

Robocop vs. The Terminator

Elemental Master
Thunder Force
Contra Hard Corps
Ghouls n Ghosts
Phantasy Star IV

Gunstar Heroes, Shinobi 3, Crusader of Centy, E-SWAT

Play it with a "No damage from your attacks" code / patched rom.

Comix Zone is a game that might have been fun but it's just way too hard without cheat codes. The developers seem to have fallen for the "we don't want people to beat it as a rental so set the default difficulty to 'assrape' so you have to slowly claw your way through the game by starting over a million times" meme

Yeah, I'm sure there's lots of autists out there who got gud and will tell me to do the same but honestly, I'm not gonna beat my head against the wall just to master a mildly interesting game with like 30 minutes of actual gameplay.

Blame western game reviewers from the 90's who demanded games be made harder, which resulted in a bunch of mid-90's games being tweaked to be stupidly difficult

I never understood this mentality from developers because it assumes people who finish a game never want to play it again, whereas with most people I know if they liked a game you'd replay it frequently whether you'd already beat it or not. You could beat the Sonic games in one sitting and that didn't stop anyone from buying it.

If anything, it was counterproductive. If I rented a game and wasn't able to beat it because of some cheesy difficulty level, that didn't send me running out to buy it.

Why are you emulating arcade ports when you can just emulate the fuckin arcade game? Jesus Christ you niggers are retarded as hell
>>
>>8904993
Game reviewers in the early 90s had a very close relationship with Sega Europe and Sega of America, particularly the ones at the Official Sega mags. They would rely on their advice almost exclusively, even on what games to release or localise altogether. You're welcome for the history lesson zoomer.
>>
>>8907643
Literal retard detected. Mega Drive was the first console with arcade ports which were better than the arcade version.
>>
>>8905398

>>
>>8907909

>>
>>8908173

anon people who would buy a game that they already beat are clearly in the minority so appealing to them is just hurting your bottom line
>>
>>8904782
Totally. I'm playing on emulator saving after beating each level BUT EVEN THEN I replayed level 2 so many fucking times, that I just got fucking sick of the game - EVEN THOUGH it's great music, great graphics; great gameplay, great premise.

Perfect example of how you can fuck everything up by being a total retard in one thing - in this case, difficulty. It's like baking the tastiest cake ever and then covering it in shit.

it's the weirdest thing I've ever seen,should have doubled down & gotten a 3 button instead ;_;

The two other SoR games that are better.

McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure is unexpectedly fun.

for a second there I read sword of vermilion & had a heart attack, that game was so brutal & slow as snails but did ooze atmosphere & pure distilled SOUL!
>>
>>8911740
Have you tried holding down Mode right after the console boots up? Also, which model of Genesis do you have?
>>
>>8913073
I'm fairly certain it's model 1 but could be 2,pop'd up the controller & it's not the pad so must be the button input itself
>>

so good

i just gotta find whatever the latest romhack is because vanilla is piss easy after the age of 8.
>>
>>8905506
>I never understood this mentality from developers

Because it's a stupid generality that's true in one case out of many, which doesn't even apply to PAL regions in which renting was a lot less developped. There is never one simple answer to everything no matter how it feels reassuring to the people believing that.
Japanese devs also believed that the general western audiance was looking for a challenge when playing games, while the general Japanese audiance was more casual. This is confirmed by simply looking at magazines from back then, a lot of reviews had a "longevity" factor in the game's overall score which was partly based on a game's difficulty (the harder it was, the better the score). Meanwhile in Japan, people complained when even a jRPG was too hard.

What are you talking about? Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is right there! ;)
>>

It's not. I know you want it to be but it's really not. I think Story of Thor/Beyond oasis is a much more interesting and polished zelda like, even if I would consider neither to be 'better'.
>>
>>8916206
I found beyond oasis really boring for some reason. I thought its start was a little slow and found the visuals kind of abrasive on the eyes
>>
>>8912517
>>8912473
>>8912453
I’m convinced when ppl think of SoR they’re thinking of the music/kino from 1 and the controls/gameplay of 2 , together they would have been the perfect game

>>8916225
It's not everyones cup of tea, the combat is fun but the enemy variety (or really how you can approach them) leaves a lot to be desired. I really enjoyed the puzzles, its very unique that your 'subweapons' are limited by what surfaces and objects are around around you. The puzzles can get pretty tricky in the late game. It may be a little lean compared to something like lttp but I really digged the core concept. There sequel is definitely more fleshed out.
>>
bump!
>>
Wiz N Liz is my favorite genesis game, ever.
>>
>>8911827
Last Alert is a more traditional top-down shooter, while R3 has more varied sequences plus some first-person segments (shooting down a coptor with your bow, for example). You may want to give it a try, though I think Last Alert is more "hardcore", gameplay-wise.
>>
>>8903337
Just 1cc'd Castlevania Bloodlines and had a fucking blast. Awesome game. Better than SCIV in almost every way. More fast paced and arcade-y feeling with a less drab color palette. Very satisfying playing as Lecarde with the spear. The spear vault and twirl are more satisfying than they have any right to be. The difficulty feels very fair too. Rarely died due to excessive knock-back or because a jump was a pixel or two off.
>>
Hyper Iria is alright

Can’t figure out MAME or retroarch, but have no problem with regular emulators.
>>
>>8918053
I just downloaded that last night. Playing through Dracula X right now. Never beaten it. The Bloodline dude, Morris, is so effin' jacked. He cracks me up. I went through the first stage to test the rom and it seems like a great game.
>>
>>8918053
Lecarde is easy mode tho
>>
>>
>>8919216
Fair. That's not a bad thing tho. I mean he's so fucking cool. Probably one of the most satisfying 16 bit characters I have ever controlled. I do plan to clear it with Morris as well for sure since there are divergent paths and whatnot. Also wanna tackle expert eventually. It's honestly a 10/10 game for me.
