Because I’m trying to have fun playing doom like spawning unlimited amounts of friendly monsters and making them fight each other and having fun with cheats and also purposely trying to break mods by combining them all with different gameplay, actors, weapons, etc. then she comes along trying to flex on me with her preference of sourceport by using Zandorum and thinks she is hot shit because she knows how to use a bfg and also hugging archies so they won’t bombard her with flames it fucking pissed me off and now I cannot enjoy doom anymore because of it after watching her stream doom plus she is a girl

How fucking incompetent do you have to be to type something like this? 3D Realms had like only DNF & Prey working on as far as I'm aware, so how he possible didn't knew about the problems Duke faced as company owner? This sounds so dumb. "Unreal Engine 5 Remake" sounds even dumber though.

Curiously enough, both George and Zoom Platform agree on Scott being an asshole. Sounds convincing enough.

Seeing this kino thing made me think:
if everyone hated filtered textures turning into a blurry mess, why theres no 'simple upscaler' that would apply Dithering to the resized textures in an attempt to keep them look sharp somewhat again?
Also what mod/addon is that?

Which brings the question... Is it right to blame only George for shitshow? Not saying he didn't played a big part in it, but blaming one guy for everything is just too convenient. It's almost always not as simple as that.

Man, not sure if 400 Minutes MAP06's MIDI is so obnoxiously loud in general or because of my soundfont (Arachno) but I had to scrape my brains off the walls and pick my ears from the floor after the first millisecond.
Also there's this thing right here that kept screaming secret but I think it's just a bug.
Overall, I enjoyed this map's aesthetic (especially those cactus walls, I think one is glitched though), but I'm kinda meh on the arena, the archviles are annoying but not really threatening and the monsters slowly spawning in is also kinda meh.
I found the plasma by mistake after finishing most of the map.
Still, good effort.
>>
>>8897598
I assume that gap is some kind of sound channel to alert monsters? I don't make maps but I saw it in the original Doom.
>>
>>8897598
>secret but I think it’s a bug
You honestly have no idea what that is?

Generally speaking I interpreted the challenge as 400 minutes invested including play testing so I’m abiding by that as much as possible.
Honestly I had no idea about the midi volume. I can replace it, or if someone wants to muck about with the midi itself and reinject it, be my guest.

>>
>>8897625
I imagine you'd cover it with a mid texture if that were the case.
But logically that makes the most sense. I figured it was an aesthetic detail; a channel for the water to flow in/out. I checked in the editor and you fucking called it, damn I need to get better at mapping.

It’s cool anons. I was quite objectively trying to imitate a feature seen in the original iwads (open map16 suburbs to see a sound tube near the lake)
I wish I could really nail down and perfect the monster and ammo composition of my arena map (it gets hard to gauge difficulty after play testing the same thing half a dozen times) but I’m happy with the 6.66hr result. Thanks for the play through anyway.

I am a sucker for transforming levels and going from the blood dimension to the moon dimension was pretty cool.

The Vile fight was... eh. Pretty annoying, not more.

What you're describing as playing around is something would actually have to be in the pipeline to make it into a build. In 2001 there were clearly no intentions to put spec and normal maps into dnf. It's not present on any other model.
The answer is that they focused on more important things for the vertical slice. It's just an unfinished model.

Reminds me a bit of one of the very first maps I've ever made (obviously more skilled, but the general layout fits).
This is also the first map I didn't find all secrets. Even the map only showed fragments of some lone room I probably have to teleport somewhere, but no other indication for any kind of secret was visible.

Also, a missing lower texture at this teleporter, and if you try to open the door that led to this area, you get a HOM effect.

I didn't check the /v/ threads too much, but someone set up a multiplayer server and had a few people in it for an hour. Best bets for further discussion are Duke4 (dedicated DNF subforum, has a guy trying to set up permanent master server), TCRF and Hidden Palace (general beta/cut content discussion), and anything that might sporadically pop up here.

MAP09's bridge has been a common bug report so far, and I think I know what's causing it. There's a lot of arachnotrons clumped together, so it's very likely two of them are dying at once, triggering the dead simple effect twice.

It might just be the soundfont, so I think I'll leave it in the WAD. On the topic of MIDIs, MAP27's MIDI is technically louder than most in the set, but I haven't had anyone complain about it being complete ear rape yet like in Ad Mortem, so I'll leave that too.

Action 18 shouldn't take floor above higher floors. What I see is consistent with going 128 units up - which would be the default action for tag 667 in this context. Maybe it's GZDoom fucked up again?

I'll be trying to make some DNF webms when I have the time to, but I really don't like having to compress these webms to hell and back to get them cut down enough for 4chan. Here's another webm I made from /v/'s current DNF thread though.
DNF's core gameplay is pretty satisfying, but it's obvious most of these levels aren't really finished. I stand by my opinion that given a year or two, this would've been a great early 2000's shooter classic.

400min MAP11

Could be that I know it was made by Revae, but this map gave me some kind of Rekkr feel, most likely due to the layout and texture use.

I liked how you could use the Vile to kill the Mastermind, because I had exactly 20 cells left and the Mastermind was still alive. Then I somehow managed to get past the Vile, push the button, grab a bunch of leftover cells from the other room and go back and one-shot the Vile with the BFG.
Finished with 1 kill left (Cybie on the pillar in the lava) and 1 secret left (where the Chaingunners stand, couldn't find a way back out of the blood pit).

So far I think I am enjoying this wad most of all the recent /vr/ efforts.
I think it's because
a) those bit-sized maps are easily digestable, compared to something that takes half an hour with a not-so-low three-digit monster count
b) Speedmapping forces people to go outside their comfort zone a bit, so we get more quick+dirty gimmicks instead of massive prolonged onslaughts (still don't like slaughter). What I noticed though is that in a lot of maps so far door combat was a very viable strategy.
c) Since I am pistol starting each map I don't have to care about carrying over health and ammo anymore, so I can go all-out and play a bit more offensive instead of trying to conserve the good stuff. It's kinda liberating.

400 minutes bugs/issues

Erosion of Sanity:
- I ended up accidentally archvile-jumping into the circular blood pool. You can still beat the level at this point, but if you take the teleporter back to the start you'll be softlocked because the door is barred.

Dash Tower (called Wundash Tower in the submission post):
- In the start area, the hell knights and pinkies are likely to get stuck in their teleport chambers.
- Secret exit doesn't seem to be used.
- Final fight is ridiculous, especially since you'll likely have very little health at this point (a lot of damage earlier in the map seems unavoidable/rng). I managed to beat it once after 50+ attempts

I think I prefer the snarky Coca Cola drinking, laser gun shooting, and explosive molar having classic Duke over the super ego driven Duke we got in 3D and onwards. Though they definitely perfected his design in 3D with the shades.

I like the presentation of HL in the end. But come on Marc, Duke will always be awesome. I forgive him because he also loves Thief.

In the end he wanted to make future videogames in an age where engines simply did not allow it. I remember reading something form him where he wanted to make a game that had the mystical feel of Myst and the half way action from Doom.
""Thief is the single most terrifying, immersive, and rewarding game I have played and the one single-player game I continue to replay. In addition to the overriding stealth gamestyle, it is loaded with unique elements that hold one in the world. I love the setting, a medieval tech fantasy world that owes less to D&D than to such literary lights as Fritz Leiber, Jack Vance and Michael Shea. It has a spare, but well-crafted storyline, eccentric NPCs, brilliant verse, and unparalleled sound design. Then there are the enormous, intricate levels: Sprawling towns (both populated and ruinous), haunted crypts, bizarre mansions, lost cities, and the finest subterranean sequences in any game the climactic level being a surreal descent that convinced me I had scrambled many miles towards the earth's core. There are countless books I wish I had written; Thief is one of the few games I wish I had worked on." - Marc Laidlaw"

maybe they had a proper particle renderer. i know half-life just uses quake's shitty sprite renderer to draw an animated explosion sprite (just one) and do a couple sparks after the explosion. no mesh debris either
it's all hardcoded and two sprites so they probably didn't get to go as hard as the dnf guys

(the fire and blood were hardcoded before they ported them over to particle systems) the source code to this day still has the quake effects as "legacy effects" you can still spawn by the way

Gentleman, i think i cracked the code!

3dRealms now owns Duke once more thanks to the merge with Embracer and Gearbox.
But at the same time, 3d Realms is also working on Ion Fury last chapter.

I think this delay is because due to the merge, Ion Fury and Duke will be back as one single universe, and they are remaking the DLC story so it fits with Duke 3d and DNF.
So no more one armed shelly freak from Bombshell, we will get the Shelly that was supposed to come with old DNF, the former EDF officer after the events of IF where she meets Duke.
Aftermath will maybe end with Shelly Meeting Duke after the events of Duke 3d.

Lets, see if summer game fest next month brings the truth in all of this shitshow.
>>
>>8900317
Ion Fury isn't being worked on in-house, so I doubt the merger has anything to do with it.

Unreal's enemy progression is all over the place. Brutes, Skaarj and Slith are some of the first and hardest, then the later Mercenaries and Krall are pushovers, and the ranged Skaarj are slightly more threatening nuisances that sit behind shields.

it had a huge amount of graphical bugs that were only fixed last year, basic things like shader effects not being animated, fog not rendering, bump maps not working with static lighting (and the game made HEAVY use of them), a key (pun not intended) character using a beta or alpha texture instead of the release build, etc.

>Gentleman, i think i cracked the code!
No, you don't. Gearbox and 3D Realms both being under Embracer Group one way or the other doesn't mean shit. 3DR multiple times stated their lack of interest in Duke and avoid people from posting links/videos/screenshots of the leak since they just don't want to risk getting into another shitshow yet again.
If anything, Slipgate is probably helping Saber with that new Painkiller title while also working on Graven and those unannounced RTS and FPS games.
>But at the same time, 3d Realms is also working on Ion Fury last chapter.
Voidpoint works on Aftershock, just like they did on the original game.
>I think this delay is because due to the merge
It's more likely because of Covid and delay due to merge. There's also a huge chance of them being getting screwed by both Willits and (allegedly, of course) Miller.
>>8900418
They were the original publisher. By the way, you even could've purchase Commander Keen games and Wolfenstein 3D from their website until July 2020.
>>
>>8900814
Raze is completely fine as a way to play Blood. The code is based on 2020 NBlood & fixes from GDX. Input subsystem has been rewritten so it can't playback demos unlike NBlood/GDX, but I'd describe it as feeling the smoothest out of all the ports. It is also the only port to have completely working weapon animation interpolation thanks to the fixed QAV files included with the package.

The only issue is that the original sound system was thrown out, so everything sounds rather static compared to NBlood/GDX. No doppler effects, just directional panning. Still better than FS.
>>
>>8900856
How they worked around the Nblood source is beyond me, last time I checked that shit it was basically unreadable, GDX's code is written far better
>>
>>8900868
Absolutely, NBlood/eDuke in general is a clusterfuck, but when you look at Ken's original code you have to wonder how anyone at QStudios even got something working out of it. It gives a lot of context to GEORGE.TXT file in the blood alpha leak.

Also why Raze have refactored a lot of the code with newer C++isms.

None of the games on the engine have managed to hold an active modding fanbase to present day. Unreal's been pretty much dead since the waning of UT3, and everything else was much more minor. People who don't want to just mod an existing game have moved on to newer versions (UE4 & 5).

400min MAP14

What a sadistic, evil, evil, evil map.
Loved the Archvile trap though.
I iddqd'd through the Arachnotron gank squad because after like 20 tries there wasn't a single instance where I *didn't* get instantly blasted from all sides, like literally the moment the walls lowered.
Afterwards I just ran to the exit, ended with something like 50% kills.
>>
>>8901658
Not the author, but in the Arachnotron room, I just hug the door after grabbing the red key and try to kill the spiders facing you as quickly as possible. This might not be consistent, however.
>>
400min MAP13

This one had a nice theme to it. The crushers for the knights are a good idea and I loved the monster banquet. The fight with the four Viles was a bit boring, single Viles are only an annoyance.

I'm actually glad to hear this! I've seen a couple people use the crusher on the Baron/Hell Knight club right there, but not on the end fight.
>Is telefragging the Cyberdemon supposed to be possible? I tried several times, but it never worked.
It is, but I wouldn't call it a consistent strategy. The TP was more for the Cyber's benefit, with the option to telefrag being a side-effect.

Yeah, even with doing a lot of copy&paste + find&replace in my map to make the most of limited time its hard to make something longer in 400 minutes - but speedmapping has a lot of benefits, I felt much more motivated during editing, I think we should have x minutes of /vr/ projects more often

Another short and fun map. Loved the theme, reminded me of that one Blood level. Cool progression. Maybe you could make the secret sector for the BFG secret a big bigger, because when I grabbed it, it didn't trigger, I had to shuffle around a bit.

And, maybe it's just my impression, but having this many Viles basically one after another, because iirc so far every single map has had at least one, made me a) less afraid of them and b) I think I even got better at Doom overall.

I think AD does that. It's probably just a matter of going through and replacing every instance of the blood spray function with something better that accounts for the type of entity hit and/or uses an RGB field on the entity for particle color. I might have a go at that eventually.

Flak ogre was just part of Progs Dump 2 as a weapon swap for regular ogres. Another anon added most of the non-expansion monsters - some requested, some not - so I couldn't tell you why some aren't included.

If the ONLY discrepancy you've noticed is in revenants, then you're just watching a good player. Youtube "how to revenant" or something, video is by sobad, it's an in-depth explanation of that enemy.

The only settings that change monster behavior are Nightmare and -fast, which are actually different, I forget which decino video explains it but -fast still have a reaction time whereas nightmare sets reaction time to zero, unless the monster just respawned in which case its set to 18 iirc so that's the only time a monster has a reaction time on NM
