What games that was heavily shilled by gaming media and the industry when it came out is now forgotten?

Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.
Zoomers are into better artistic Japanese games like Dark Souls.

Rise of the Robots was heavily hyped in gaming media before release, although to be fair the same outlets rightly panned it when they were finally got their review copies.

Night Trap and the majority of the wave of FMV games in the early 90s.
>>
>>8519206
I think the same could be said about most of Shiny Entertainment's output like Wild9 and MDK. I only hear people talk about Earthworm Jim (due to the character designer turning out to be a Christfag) and Aladdin on the Genesis (and even then, most people only talk about Aladdin as console war fodder).
>>

Ico walked so Dark Souls could run

Most of the FMV games. They couldn't stop talking about Dragon's Lair, Burn:Cycle, Critical Path, Night Trap, Double Switch, etc. No one gives a flying fuck about most of those "games" today. They thought "MULTIMEDIA" was some magic word that made everything amazing. After getting stomped by Doom, SF2, MK2, and Myst, they soon realized you needed a game and not just some movies.

Basically Mortal Kombat with giant monsters. It came out during the 4th to 5th gen transition period, so it ended up being ported to almost every console around that period. It did well enough to get a sequel, which never made it pass the prototype phase. I mostly remember it due to the controversy one of the fatalities caused, in which one of the apes urinates over his fallen enemy's corpse.

Didn't get a ton of hype, but it was talked about as one the good Genesis games. Quite terrible, though.
>>
This was supposed to be Streets of Rage IV at some point and then it became its own IP when Core wanted to make versions on other platforms. It's quite notable, as there weren't many 3D beat-'em-ups aside from Die Hard Arcade/Dynamite Deka, but Fighting Force doesn't seem to be as fondly remembered . And then for some reason they turned the sequel into a third-person shooter and only brought back the generic dude.

If I remember this game correctly and it's the one that's just brown and came out in like 2006, the articles I read on it were calling it mediocre.

James D. Goddard, who was a Capcom USA guy who helped out on Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting and Super Street Fighter II, was the lead designer, but I think most people know him as the guy who created Dee-Jay than from Weaponlord. He became really salty when Namco ended up doing Soul Edge, accusing them from ripping off his own game (since they were Weaponlord's publisher).

It was hot for the year on the new launched N64 as the console was starved for good games and the original trilogy re-relase mania helped. Few people after 1997 ever mention the game ever again though.
They consider it a top 3 seller that year, but all it had to contend with besides mario 64 was... pilotwings 64? Maybe cruisin USA? The N64 had a shit launch.

The point is, it was very quickly forgotten not long after it came out which is the point of the thread.

There was hype for it when it was going to be an early GC exclusive, then the Rare buyout happened, and then it took until the 360 to actually materialise, and the Xbox audience don't give a shit about cartoony platformers anyway.
I would kind of like to play this game, and the rest of Rare's 360 output one day, but I'm definitely not in a hurry.
>>
>>8522394
I'll praise it. It's a pretty good game. I think I like it more than Rogue Squadron, which just never really grabbed me. You get a jet-pack, you ride a speeder bike, you have shoot outs with Boba Fett and IG-88. It's alright.

Super Double Dragon, the last "proper" Double Dragon game made by Technos, was barely promoted, but somehow this got a huge ad campaign rivaling that of Super Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat II, both which were coming out on the Super NES and Genesis at the same time.

It was a U.S.-developed fighting game based more on the Double Dragon animated series that was airing at the time than on the old beat-'em-ups, so you have Billy and Jimmy fighting with swords and a bunch of silly villains from the TV show like the ice guy and the dude with purple spandex and blade, but no Linda or Abobo.

I'm guessing Tradewest wanted to make money off a once popular beat-'em-up franchise, despite the fact that the series went off the rail after the second NES game.

Does Myst count?
On one hand, it was an incredibly influential title when it came out in 1993, was re-released and remastered for several years, saw numerous acclaimed sequels, and drove up the adoption rate of CD-ROM drives for personal computers.
On the other hand, the point and click style it helped innovate didn't age very well, nor did the clones which copied its obtuse puzzles and static backgrounds, and the franchise itself has been overlooked in recent years.

Atari Games didn't get bought by Midway until 1996, a few years after Primal Rage. And it's not like Midway wasn't willing to make a non-MK fighting game. They made War Gods (another overhyped game that's now forgotten) and Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. Hell, Atari Games even did Mace: The Dark Age after being bought by Midway.

I love this game but it could've been so much more. I wanted the tone to be similar to something like Star Fox Adventures. I wonder if MS had something to do with the story/tone with the game after they bought Rare and moved Kameo to the 360. Like maybe they shifted the game to be more kid friendly to have a kid friendly games for their console.
Idk where I heard this but I remember people saying they didn't know who the audience for this game was for, the game was not kid friendly enough, but also wasn't like for older audiences, I wonder if MS was the cause of this.
Shame it never got a sequel that improved on everything...though I don't want a sequel now, not with modern rare.

I'm talking about the sequel and the franchise as a whole. The first game had loads of hype and was well liked but faded away because Atari got bought by Midway and Midway crushed the franchise. They were permitted to make games that didn't directly compete with Mortal Kombat like 3d fighters but no bloody 2d fighters. Primal Rage 2 was 95% complete when the purchase went through and everything about it was shelved. They even had a toyline in the process of being released but that was killed too.

I want to say I blame Microsoft for the 360 game but in reality almost everyone at Rare left the company before the acquisition took place. Maybe if Microsoft wanted to put more money into the franchise it could have lasted longer. I wouldn't be surprised if thought about bringing it back but after COD4 it was clear there was only one kind of game the FPS market wanted and a "spy shooter" wasn't it.

They should totally bring it back as a more action oriented immersive sim or something

I mean a few years after it came out it was basically forgotten, you can talk mad shit on Goldeneye but it stayed in the public consciousness for a decade, hitting the list of best FPS games and just best games in general lists without stop.

But Perfect Dark had little to no cultural staying power, even before Zero. It’s arguably more forgotten than even the Timesplitters series which has tons of fans still.

It had literally everything going for it, and despite its success and acclaim it’s really a footnote.

It was an n64 game first and it was apart of this new wave of new Starwars material trying to get a new generation of people interested in the franchise along with the re-release of the original trilogy. The whole thing was something of an experiment by Lucasfilm to see if they could make a huge deal out of a single Starwars property without it actually being a film. They made toys, trading cards, comic books, and regular novels to go along with it. The re-release of A New Hope was coming out and they wanted kids to know StarWars.

Ico and Colossus are talked about to this day. I haven't even played them and I've heard all about them.

Tomb Raider is one of the most well-known franchises there is. Unless you mean the reboot.

I hate to say it, but you could make a case for the Double Dragon series.
>The first one was one of the top grossing arcade game of the year and the home conversions are heavily anticipated, with the NES version selling out during its release month.
>The second game is just as well-received as the first, resulting in a rights dispute between Acclaim and Tradewest over the publishing of the NES port.
>The third game gets overshadowed by Final Fight and is mostly known for inventing microtransactions by having in-game item shops that require real money. The NES version is a broken mess mostly remembered from the Bimmy memes popularized by the AVGN.
>The fourth game goes straight to SNES and ships unfinished despite some promising ideas.
>The cartoon and movie adaptations are rubbish and their vs.fighting game tie-ins are nothing to write home about.
At least Battletoads & Double Dragon was fun, even if they got Machine Gun Willy's name wrong.

It was hyped and the vidya magazine I bought at the time had the ad running for months, same for Zoop.
This game tried to mix the two big things of the time : fighting games and muh rendered graphics thinking it would be an instant hit.
Well, it gave us a good laugh and a memeable sticker, akin to "featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series". Poor Brian May

Jet Force Gemini was everywhere and then 6 months later no one cared about it at all

Can't tell if that's a joke post, but the game's called "Remember Me".
A game from that era that no one fucking talks about now is Wet. I remember a short window of time where that was going to be "the new Tomb Raider".
>>
>>8525687
I have little interest in fighting games, but some of the designs and music in Killer Instinct are pretty cool. Just on the visual end I think it holds up better than Mortal Kombat, which looks very goofy with it's digitised fighters, and Power Rangers costumes.
>>
>>8529058
I never liked the Power Rangers ninjas myself either. They should've stopped with Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

I'm playing that game right now and I'm really enjoying it

How did that work anyway?
>>
>>8531497
They were like the item shops in River City Ransom or Fantasy Zone, but instead of using points or any form of in-game currency, they charge you one credit for each item. One item would restore your health to 150%, another one gives you the option to play as a new character when your current guy and so on.

Ahh, that's pretty fucking uncool. Thanks for clearing that up for me, Anon.
>>

Hope you have fun with it, Anon. It's not a bad game by any means, but it's a pain in the ass to get screwed over by the lack of healing. Makes the game brutal at times.

Forgot to mention that the Japanese version (which is apparently the later release) took out the item shops completely and just allowed you to choose your character from the get-go like any other beat-'em-up.

Croc and Independence day were pushed as the big christmas games for a while.
The magazines tried to hype up Clayfighter a fair bit acting as if was the game that we always wanted.

Ridge racer 4 is one I felt didn't get enough hype considering its legacy, I thought there might be something wrong with it.

Remember mission impossible, that was pushed for years but it didn't appeal to me because the show seemed so straight faced and lame.

I adore this post, because there are so many things wrong with it.

1). Team Ico games, especially their first, are still talked about as quintessential examples of the medium, and even artists from other mediums (ex.: Guillermo del Toro) have cited them as influences.
2). With the possible exception of the third one, Dark Souls isn't a very "Japanese" game (no, being made in Japan, by Japanese developers, doesn't count), as it apes western RPGs so well you'd be forgiven to think it was by a westerner developer instead.
3). FromSoft have cited Ico as an influence on the Soulsborne series. Enough so, that an entire section of Dark Souls looks like it could be from one of their games.

Speaking of overhyped Star Wars games, this one got plenty of magazine coverage and even made it on the cover of EGM. Apparently Lucasarts got the idea of doing a Star Wars fighting game after Capcom went to them for the license and turn them down, so Capcom ended up doing Star Gladiator instead.
>>
>>8528683
Like a lot of other stuff ITT Double Dragon was at least organically popular in its day

>>8520703
I love this game but it's true: it got hyped to death and then it sold like 4 copies I guess. Soul Calibur really did borrow some stuff from it, and I wonder about the barbarian dude from Killer Instinct 2 also.
>>
>>8519175
That game really feels like the first big vidya flop, or at least the earliest I can think of that practically parallels the flops of today.

It wasn't a toxic shit heap like its 2013 cousin but it was still not that impressive. I remember there was initially some hype over a fully-3D Simcity coming out only to realize later that everything was excessively dumbed down to the point that it would've made more sense to call it SimTown 2.
>>
>>8527536
I don't think I played any other fighting game as a kid as much as this series. Yet it's all just sort of a blur and I can't remember any characters' names other than Eiji and Vermilion. I'm afraid of looking at footage now and it being worse than I remember.

The most I remember from Toshinden was the tacky U.S. marketing campaign that tried to push Sofia as a vidya sex symbol. This was a bit before Lara Croft debuted.
>>
>>8533790
It's kinda ironic, considering Capcom made the arcade and NES game adaptations of Willow, which was Lucas film's ripoff of The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings after they failed to secure the rights.

not /vr/ but literally every modern game is like this. Hyped and talked about for 1 year max and then completely forgotten about. Nobody cares about RDR1, watchdogs 1 or Battlefield 3 anymore.

to keep it /vr/ related, FFVIII

I know Spore still has a bit of a cult following, but it was shilled relentlessly as the next coming of Christ. Until it was released.

Maybe to you, but imo it's easy to tell it's Japanese
>>
>>8537510
>Nobody cares about RDR1
Red Dead Redemption had plenty of discussion after it came out. RDR2 on the other hand, interest for the game evaporated overnight once the hyper wore off and players realized how much of a slog-fest it was. Same thing with Cyberpunk 2077. It was hyped like the second coming of Jesus and now retailers are trying to get rid of unsold launch copies at a discount.

I felt like I was taking crazy pills when this was being hyped. Between the astroturfing and vocal minority fnaboys it was impossible to talk about the game.
>bro, it's from the guy that did simcity and the sims
So it's going to be boring shit that only teen girls and stay at home moms play?
>but... simcity!
Dude didn't even make the good simcity games.
>it's going to revolutionize gaming!
Definitely not over promising and under delivering like every other game from the past 15 years, right?
>>
>>8519160
Ground Control and Act of War. Both were shilled as RTS renaissance but and were good but in hindsight, not that significant.
Another case: Tom Clancy's EndWar (not retro).

Is there a good rundown of all this? Like a comprehensive book or video? I've only read a few articles and they always present their slanted picture of what actually happened so you have to read like 20 articles to get the whole story.

I love it. I heard about them releasing an unfinished version, I didn't know about him sperging out on a vending machine though.
