Which one?

Where should I go for retro controllers now? I have one working controller for each of my consoles, but I'd like at least 2 for co-op.

Problem is literally every 3rd party controller I've bought has broke within a week. I see a lot of products these days that look identical to their 1st party counterparts, but I don't know if they're worth it at all.

I just want a PS2/PS3 controller...
>>
I'll go with the DS4 unless it's one of those shitty new ones that have a lightbar on the front. Otherwise I'll take the F310. Everything else is just third party trash or a shitty xbox controller.

PS3 controllers are rough since there are a ton of really good fakes on the market. Bought one in the package and it looked great. Perfect aesthetically but as soon as you tried to play a game you could tell the sticks were fake. You couldn't hit L3 and run at the same time. Which you can on real controllers. Took it apart and what do you know it's fake.
PS2 controllers I've never worried about since I have like 6 of them.

Yeah me too. I played a lot of PSX and PS2, so after my 360 controller broke I went right back to PS and got a PS4 controller. It's very comfortable and I love the little lip on the L/R2. It's just so comfy and the only downside is it's not made of metal or something.

I have big hands and you have to really contort your pointer finger, also it really fucking wears on your 2nd joint. It's not comfy at all.

The red circle is my finger end being SMASHED in to the plastic.
The blue circle is where my finger is being forced to bend unnaturally and the trigger is jamming in the joint.
The green circle is me having to bend my finger back to get it up around the damn sides while my hand is cupped.

If strictly speaking about /vr/ games only then Sega Saturn pad.
A mix of /vr/ and modern then DS4 for d-pad in primary position and gyro +flick stick aim. I've yet to get my hands on a DS so I don't know if I'd like it more than a DS4.
If I have to decide now and forever, DS4.

The ideal all-in-one controller should have, at the very least:
>six face button layout
>two shoulder buttons + two triggers
>d-pad in primary position
>two analogue sticks in the lower positions, preferably with a gamecube-style octagonal gate

Something like that would be able to suit more or less everything, including n64/saturn without having to compromise with rearranged control schemes
>>
>>8504780
Retrobit had a prototype dual analog/trigger Saturn pad they showed years ago but they never made any.

And yes, that would be ideal.

I actually think even though probably no one would use them. The alternative uses for the diagonal separation switch buttons would total 71.
*4 cardinal directions on a rocking base.
*4 diagonal separate buttons.
*8 combo 16th N/NE buttons. [a cardinal+diagonal.]

*Pushing 2 or more diagonal buttons at once to make a new command = 11 but with a cardinal 5th button 11 for each direction = 16+55 = 71

Kek, no one would push both diagonals by accident. And since it won't register presses of
multiple cardinals, it should work.

Games that won't use it will just filter out the presses, unless you mapped to them.
>>
>>8514409
Thanks fren. I think a rough idea is all anyone needs really. I mean, I could spend a long time in Rhino 3D or numerous other 3D modeling software. But I just wanted to get across simple ideas that aren't being implemented. But it's like my Dad used to say. "You don't ask, you don't get." Hopefully they seem to listen to us on occasion and in the next year or 3 this or something similar will get made.

that's 115. Just for the wacky D-pad.

>>8504550
Got a Pro 2, it's fantastic. But the Pro+ I bought earlier quickly developed a sticky B button. The problem with 8bitdo controllers is there are sometimes bad batches (because China I guess) so it's a gamble whether you get a good one or not. At least they're fairly cheap.
>>
>>8517584
No wait, if you pressed a cardinal in combination with a single diagonal that wasn't adjacent to it, then add two more for each combo. 16+11+52[4x13]+ 60[4x15] .= 139, But at that point you might as well prevent the cardinals being pressed in combination as the diagonals are filling that position. It would get silly trying to be that accurate with a up to six button hotkey.

It’s the fucking lightning bolt that does it for me, kek.
Also, sure, neat idea, but why the three gem buttons under the left analogue stick? And what are the 7 hearts?
And, is it really necessary to have start/select equivalent buttons on BOTH the left and right sides?
Also, why is there yet another array of three option buttons under the hearts?

It just feels like your plan was to cram as many buttons as humanly possible, and I can’t, for the life of me, work out why anyone not trolling would feel the need to slap NINETEEN face buttons, not even counting the four sliver shoulder buttons or four rear buttons, let alone still add L3 and R3 tactile buttons, a grand total of 29 buttons, while still find it necessary to include “meta buttons” from pressing two diagonals at once.

For that matter, how do the multi-diagonal buttons even work? What function do they serve?
>>
>>8521704
>cope
>project
kek
>>
>>8521856
Ok.
The lightning bolt isn't actually on the design. It's just to signify the battery placement.
Don't take it so literally.
The gem buttons? only 'C' and 'Z' have texture. And that's because demand for tactile concave 'Snes style' buttons were suggested to differentiate from the main 4 diamond formation.
The flush buttons underside of the analogue sticks were a callback to the smaller original Xbox start and select buttons. It's an underused location, out of the way. Underrated and under used in my opinion.
Using more assignable buttons actually can be very helpful for emulation and any gamer's choice preferential hot key. I have tried formations like these and the extra buttons are not a hindrance in the slightest.

The 7 hearts are just a design option, they're mimicking classic game health bars. They would likely be used as home and general meta menu buttons. Those Start/Select buttons actually were more used as L3/R3 alternatives on other handhelds. Because they didn't have the option on their analogues. This one does, however the buttons would still be of use. And they are out of the way. So no harm.

Many people use more buttons these days. If we were playing Sonic, then perhaps this is overkill. But it would do no harm if I was using this controller to play Sonic or Mario. Yes it is a modern device, but that should not make you think that it would be too overwhelming to play retro on it.

If you want minimalist designs then it's not for you. Buy an alternative device. This is for people who don't mind having options.

People who push boundaries experiment. Yes, it's a thing. Meta directionals seem overkill. And I joked about it too. I don't think they would be used very often, if at all. However, the potential for someone coming up with a use for such a hot key is not something I would want to deny others. However weird it may sound. If they can find a use for pressing multiple d pad commands at once, [same as 4pad diagonals] then go ahead.
>>
>>8523804
When up and right are pressed, it will still register a diagonal press. So long as the game recognizes diagonal direction. So the number of button presses I recommend would be 115. That means no two cardinal directions can be pressed to get a 'new' command. But in combination with the other diagonal buttons it can. If someone is weird enough or likes their games that little more challenging. Then it's there, kek.

>>8523852
Understatement of the year
>>
>>8513653
why does it need to be both a handheld and a controller
>>
>>8524218
It's an under used utility. If you are paying good money for this device. It would be useful to use it beyond just handheld gaming. All that plastic and membranes and the pcb of a controller for it not to be able to be used as a controller?! What a wasted opportunity.

To answer your question, no it doesn't NEED to be. But it should be capable of it.
>>
>>8524180
It could work, it's just complicated if one wanted to use for anything requiring fast inputs. As a lot of keyboard based games have plenty of hotkeys, I can see it potentially being useful. I can imagine if someone wanted to emulate Amiga, for instance. Or maybe one of those pilot simulation games they might use it. Hook it up to their, or their friends TV and have the options they didn't before.
>>
>>8524365
I guess I'm still not seeing the draw for this thing. I think it is a fair assumption to make that anyone interested in buying this thing would already own a controller or two for some other piece of electronics, and frankly it doesn't really look like a good enough controller to be worth using with anything other than the portable emulation thing it's bundled with
>>
>>8524391
Well it's a little more ergonomic than the standard handheld. But most people aren't autistic enough to worry about that. If they wanted more, they get more. Not all of these handhelds always connect up with your controller of choice. And even if they do, the firmware isn't always the best. Comparability/lag issues plague these devices usually. More than even the cursed Android ware.
>>
>>8524391
No, I must be missunderstood. The controller is a bonus. There are no other devices that do this. Except maybe the Gba and Gamecube. But even that wasn't ideal. If an extra controller was wanted but not present. It's an option. I'm not saying it would be the first choice. But why not have it?
