Welcome to The Garage, a thread where fans of racing vidya can discuss their favourite arcade, sim, kart, and any other kinds of racing games (this is /vr/, so any PC/6th gen game up to 2007 goes!). If you’re looking for something new to play or are new to the genre ask other Anons for recommendations and remember to gear up and have fun.

The previous thread was dooded: >8275361

>Interested in a series to get started with?
https://pastebin.com/Vke5tf9e (embed) (embed)

Remember to bump, /vr/ has been faster as of late and threads get archived much quicker now. Don't be shy: ask questions, share experiences! If anyone has ideas for community events, speak up!
>>
Why don't you just list the games in the pastebin on the OP itself? Makes it easier to find the thread on the catalog too.

What are the best looking games on PS2 except for GT4? (because it BTFO of everything else on the console)
So far I think these look decent for the hardware:
NFSU2
NFSMW
Motorstorm Arctic Edge
Juiced 2 HIN
Midnight Club 3 remix
Burnout 3
Burnout Revenge
Burnout Dominator
TOCA 3
ATV offroad fury 4
Flatout
Flatout 2
Test Drive Unlimited

Honorable mentions:
Driver parallel lines

Please suggest any sort of racing games you think went a step further exploiting the hardware.

I also remembered:
Outrun 2006 looks cool too.
>>
>>8361360
I suggest these:
WRC: Rally Evolved (if you live in Europe)
Ford Racing 3
F1 Career Challenge
>>

>WRC: Rally Evolved (if you live in Europe)
I live in a region with a variant of PAL that doesn't display PAL properly, I suffer.
Anyway, GSM does the trick most of the time.
Wonder why USA doesn't have a release for the best rally games on PS2...
>Ford Racing 3
Forgot about it.
Cool looking game, it's almost too clean but I guess they went for a TV commercial kind of aesthetic.
>F1 Career Challenge
Will try.
Thank you.

>>
I've been playing through the Ridge Racer series and just got to V today.

It took me like 3 hours of retries but I finally beat the first Standard Cup on Hard, and man that felt so accomplishing.
I was on my last chance and had been racing a perfect race in the Kamata, I had been on the first place driver's tail since the hairpin on lap 2 but just didn't have a powerful enough car to make a pass until we got back to the hairpin turn on lap 3 and I made the cleanest fucking drift pass you can make.

My heart was racing because of how easily all my attempts could have been for naught and I would have had to start back from race 1 if any part of my drift was even slightly suspect.
That was just so fun. They don't make arcade racers like this anymore it feels like.

Ridge Racer V is my favorite so far, albeit I'm only 3 hours in. I just wish PCSX2 didn't produce garbage textures on the cars when upscaled.

Ridge Racer was bad, Revolution was better for the first course but still bad and then the last course to me was terrible.
Rage Racer was GREAT but it felt like you could cheese it too easily due to the nature of being more open-ended with you car selection and upgrades. And the AI tended to get in the way too much.
Ridge Racer Type 4 is GREAT and the most technically and stylistically impressive of all the games so far, but too damn easy, even with the American team, once you adjust to the physics the game is just a cakewalk.

But RRV just feels like a step up in perfecting the arcade controls, physics, and overall difficulty and it comes real close to being as stylish as RR4 while being as graphically impressive as I can expect from coming out so close to the PS2's launch.
>>
>>8362831
Is there any secret code to push the camera back from the car like in your screenshot, or it's just because of upscaling?
>>
>>8362850
It's in the widescreen hack for the game.
You can find it here https://forums.pcsx2.net/Thread-PCSX2-Widescreen-Game-Patches?page=355 I guess it's mimicking the camera from RR7.
>>
>>8362831
RR7 is almost as great as RRV. A little bit ruined by stupid nitro mechanic.
>>
>>8362864
I'm looking forward to getting to it.
I've played a handful of the PSP Ridge Racers, as long the nitro doesn't make the game as braindead easy as those I'm sure I'll have fun.

I think that nitro has no place in Ridge Racer games. You should overtake rival cars by choosing the best racing lines and nailing perfect drifts, not by pressing one magic button. RR7 balances this a little with rivals using nitro quite often too, but it's still not what vintage RR, which is inspired by touge racing, is about.
>>
>>8362887
I agree with you, I don't really see the point in Nitro in the RR series, I just don't want to knock it until I try it.
>>
>>8362831
For RR4, did you do all the Extra Trials? The D.R.T ones are a step up in difficulty from the Grand Prix so if you're looking for more of a challenge make sure you do those too

all the challenges are retarded, just give you some car that handles like dogshit and an objective like "evade police in 3 minutes except we blocked off all the pursuit breakers and ramped up the police spawning and obnoxiousness to infinity"

production value was alright, i like the main menu, but the actual gameplay part is garbage and could have been so much more
>>
>>8364609
Well that sucks, is that the final version of the mod or will it be updated?
>>
After fucking about with it for a bit I think i've figured out how to close the gap in physics between the PC version and 9arguably superior) PS1 version of need for speed high stakes: Set suspension to roughly -50% (i.e soft) and increase steering speed by +20-25%. Keep the assists off as well.

>>

>>
>>8363721
Extra trials are available at the bottom of the main menu once you finish the main Grand Prix. They allow you to unlock car 20 for each team/manufacturer combination.
The D.R.T. ones are especially tough since 3 out of 4 of the trials are af Heaven and Earth, and you basically need to use the fastest car available (car 19) in order to win. These cars are far too fast for the track, and will understeer like crazy if you go into corners even a little too hot. Prepare for plenty of wall bumps.
I think D.R.T. Lizard and D.R.T. Terazi are the most difficult.

Not him, but archive.org only has the .iso version (Xbox) and I'm afraid to run any game self-extracted to .xbe but left unpatched.
>>
>>8369506
have you used XDVDMulleter?
>>
>>8370042
That's what I mean by self-extracting, it's just that I've been warned that a few games can end up bricking the C partition if unpatched and I don't have a list of which and am also a lazy coward. What I did end up doing was extracting the .iso contents, mulleting them back into a minimum size .iso, burning that to a disc, and running that through dvd2xbox to patch it juuust in case. Worked out well.
And while waiting for different processes to finish I did find out you can snoop around in the data files using PowerISO and renaming .cvm to .iso, so I can only assume it's simple enough to swap the girl's files in the NTSC-U data and rebuild as .cvm's to have an uncensored translated copy. But figuring out which files they are is beyond my effort quota at the moment.

I only tried the PS1 versions so far but the rubber banding in these games is truly infuriating, you can drive flawlessly and still lose somehow because the game has annoying rubber banding so you can never run too far ahead of your opponents but if they overtake you you will almost certainly not catch up. That means that there is almost no difference between begineer and expert difficulty.

In High Stakes they made the game much more fair but the later stages are still pretty tough.

Honestly I like both versions of High Stakes, the PC one obviously looks sharper and has better draw distance and frame rate but it also has more detailed damage system and longer better career mode. Also it supports mods so you can add lots of different cars.
However I still slightly prefer PS1 because the handling model is more realistic and just feels better despite being less grippy.

Well it's the same game, it's just a weak port. It isn't like NFS Hot Pursuit 2 PS2 vs. everything else.
>>
>>8361278
Miss this game
>>
>>8381335
yeah i like it, although the intimidation mechanic is a bit too easy, i wish there were more racers with storylines
>>

TOCA race driver games have fun light stories with the scottish narrator guy

well, after the first one they do

could be worse

...but as per a previous thread autism told us it is a good game!
>>

you can get perfect picture and 60 fps on a modern emulator
>better career mode
no
it's too damn easy
>longer
what's point of repeating the same races over and over
>>
>>8385791
>i wish there were more racers with storylines
that's a nice monkeypaw you have here. there are lots of racing games with a story nowadays, but they all play like "you're part of team full of douches and there's a fat mechanic guy, a witty girl who is the manager and you race in events and they're awesome and there are baloons in the race and you steal the gf of your love rival in the end and everything is a giant party"

I found the difficulty just right although the somplified driving model makes th game easier
>what's point of repeating the same races over and over
You know the game also contains circuits from the third game

The ps1 test drive games are good if you hate yourself and enjoy playing garbage with insane physics like me

also I can't be the only person who just hates any racing game with a story
whether it be all the annoying characters no one cares about in horizon 5 or the retarded blacklist in most wanted
I just want to race
>>
>>8389281
Stories can be fun and in Most Wanted going through the blacklist motivated you
>>
>>8388893
It's not unplayable, but I wouldn't them good. The PS1 era ones sit at like a 5-7 out of 10 depending on the day.
>>
>>8389281
the only critic I have about blacklist (and NFS "missions" after HP2 in general) is the number of events, it gets old and repetitive after a time
>>
>>8389281
i like nfs 2015 story the most
chit chat with chill buddies who like cars, no drama
>>
>>8389414
>I like 2015 story the most

I refuse to believe anyone liked the story or cutscenes in that.
>>
>>8389281
There's a lot of potential in the idea and absolutely no one did it right, except maybe RR4 and RL which is kinda nice. Honorary mention to the Toca cutscenes.
Most of it ends up being street racer stuff with lingo 15 years out of date or the shitty new F1 games. Imagine a mid to late eightes F1 game with an actual (with fictional characters) story following the season.
>>
>>8389483
>There's a lot of potential in the idea and absolutely no one did it right, except maybe RR4 and RL
I'd add Driver San Francisco to the list, but it's not really a pure racing game.
>>
>>8389415
Why? They were pretty cool, and the story had me on the edge of my seat until the final race.
>>
>>8389527
I did think of the Driver games but I didn't mention them on virtue of them not being pure racing games. Never played SF personally.
>>
>>8389536
Dude, story wise SF is so much better that other Drivers
>>
>>8386743
The fucking implication of you paying someone to murder your rival at the end caught me off guard. It was 10/10 kino
>>
>>8389606
I never got that far through the game to complete the storyline. I watched the clips on YT a while back, incredible way for it to turn.
>>
>>8389606
I love how retro racing vidya just has some absurdly out of left field twists in it.
>>
>>8389606
tbf if you can beat that fucking tier 32 in toca 3 i'd murder someone to.
>>

Destruction Derby Arenas' career mode has some truly bizarre endings for a number of the characters. A load of them end up dying in various circumstances.

Might fire up DDA again
>>
>>8390003
I know this sounds amazingly cliched and a bit of a copout and I've said it multiple times before but it's enjoyable enough yet it isn't a DD game, that's for sure. It's far too clean compared to its predecessors. Powerups were also not a thing in the previous three iterations.
>>
>>8389281
RR4 is how I think stories should be done in racing games tbqh.
>>
>>8389414
That's literally the worst. The cast is saying like 10000 words without saying anything at all. Their mouths are just moving and zoomer lingo are just being vomited out. Nothing happens: the game.
>>
>>8390401
you forgot the monster energy can label being on camera at all times.
>>
>>8389803
Which comfy game is that?
>>

MotoGP 3, I can tell by the track map alone (I spent awhile there one night trying to set best lap times - it has a really great course layout).
>>
>>8381793
That might be one reason I like the Extreme modes since they use a smaller field.

i want a game where the story is about racing like in racing evolution, that one race where you're forced to throw it or get a game over is cool as fuck
>>
>>8386728
I played the first one ages ago and was impressed that losing a race wasn't a game over and instead the game just kept going, is the third one the best one to play now? From looking at pcgw it seems like the easiest one to run while 2 is completely dead due to starforce and 1 requires a lot of fuckery to get it widescreen.

Corvette Evolution GT
Very comfy racing game btw

Are need for speed iii and hot pursuit 2 the best canadian games?
>>
>>8391501
For me It's High Stakes

I have realised something funny that apart from early ports and other version of HP2 by EA Seattle, no other games in the series were made by American developers

Almost all of my favorite racing games aside from Midnight Club were made in UK, Canada or Japan
>>

>Almost all of my favorite racing games aside from Midnight Club were made in UK, Canada or Japan
It seems to be a truism that republican stoic societies (like the U.S.) don't find game development as natural. Even in history, the Romans typically left the development of art to the Greeks.
>>
how the fuck do i get colin mcrae 2005 to run in widescreen? i've tried the command line argument but the game is still stretched, the command line for enabling the advanced particles also doesn't seem to work for me

RRT4 is the only racing game I ever played with an actually engaging story, as simple as it is presentation-wise. It's quite well-written, and doesn't waste your time with cutscenes. R: Racing Evolution also has a neat, solid story.
