Hey there /vr/. I'm NOT the organizer for /v/'s latest Super Mario World collab hack. Currently, the hack is close to being completed. I'm posting here rather than /v/ because this board moves a bit slower, and there isn't as much concern about the Thread being bumped out before it's too late, and there's things in /trash/ that I wish I hadn't seen.

Feel free to use the thread for discussion on the project and the few works-in-progress that need to be taken care of before release.

Maybe organizer will release the hack in this thread.

I'm curious
How many times has this been delayed now?
>>
>>8219551
In advance, I actually don't think we'll get there without the release

>>8219556
There was the E3 delay, the many "extra" days from bumping the thread overnight on /v/, the extra time added for the original 45-day testing thread limit and then the extra month we're having here on /vr/. I don't think I'm missing anything

Great stuff. I was getting concerned for OP after the lack of updates. I hope he got the level edits and that wizard resprite I sent him as well.
>>
How is that CONCEPTION boss coming along?
>>
>>8221393
once again, the resprite is cool. I think it's important to distinguish the boss from common enemies.
speaking of which, as I said in /trash/, I hope an increment can be added for 2/5 hits. don't get me wrong, the wizard boss came out great, and I was impressed with how the programmer anon intuitively got my concept, but I want to polish and perfect him. I think the current jump in difficulty is a bit jarring, so at 2/5 hits, the magic shot should go about 2x as fast (instead of zipping like a bullet), and the shell should be returned at normal speed instead of fast. at 3/5, the current fast behavior would kick in.
the issue seems to be with shell return, my idea is to maybe invert the normal/fast responses for 2/5, hopefully that works.
>>
>>8220992
HE
>>
just thought of another nitpick. I've playtested my boss many a time, and occasionally he appears inside the yellow blocks and is unable to get a shot off. that seems like another issue that could be fine-tuned by programming him to not appear over tiles. I wouldn't want to cordon off the border though, because as yellow blocks disappear, he can sometimes gain footholds there, which should stay in.

this would fit right into a moderately difficult level with a starry sky background.

in particular, this is worst in the lower left and right corners, because the grey boxes block his shots entirely. as I said, there should be a condition where the wizard boss can only spawn where there's 2 vertical empty tiles above solid ground.

I have no idea. All I remember is that it's a WIP, but I don't think the finished version was ever posted. There's also some other unused music. Someone made a better version of the music in A Layer 2 in My Heart, but didn't supply a txt. https://files.catbox.moe/flbe8q.spc

That Robinson port is so much nicer than what's in he hack. If the porter were here we should get a txt and maybe figure out where to put it if the level author isn't here. The Grubhub thing is annoying, but funny. It would fit a small area that you don't spend much time in, like maybe the intro cutscene.

just thought of another consideration. assuming you get the slow shell reflect to work, you could maybe put it one hit earlier, ie extend it so the second hit gets reflected slowly, then fast reflect takes over on 3 hits.

Anon who made these musics here. Those are just things I made quickly with midi2smw to try.
The first song I was not happy with how it sounded with the SMW samples and couldn't make it better so I gave up.
The second is alright but needed some optimizations to reduce the insert size and I wanted to free the channel the saw sfx use so it could be used in the layer 2 level but I got lazy and gave up.
I could always post the midis and unfinished .txt here I guess.
>>
>>8229331
might as well put the text file here so that people can clean them up

In the end I did make a version with channel 6 empty. But I won't try to optimize that garbled midi2smw code.

How come the Aussie boss throws boring old fireballs instead of bottles, like he did in /v/orld 2?
>>
>>8232191
Only works in the Mode 7 gamemode
>>
Idea for OP if he hasn't decided on a extra ending yet: Make it be based on the credits from Kirby Super Star. It starts with Moot sleeping in his bed and then it teleports you to the next room where you can see his house and then it scrolls up like a vertical autoscroller showing the credits.

The problem is that the original song hasn't been ported yet. If you think the credits might be too short you could show off random stills from the game like in Earthbound.

If you like the idea I could help out with the graphics but I can't code ASM.
>>
>>8232216
That's a nice idea. We already have another song that's being used for the credits.
>>
>>8232205
not the same anon, but are you sure you can't use a different sprite without mode 7?
also, it would be cool if that boss battle had 2 1/2 D, but I have no idea if that's feasible or not.

In Kusoge Course the palette on this firebar is fucked. Also this firebar is complete bullshit, the margin you have to make it through is microscopic.
>but it's supposed to be shit!
Yeah, whatever.

Also it crashes at the start too if you hit the message box the wrong way, but I think OP said the Kusoge Course crashes were fixed?
>>
>>8233183
I thought the firebar was weird on purpose. as for getting through, sometimes I can do it without trouble, other times I have to take a hit. it requires a certain momentum and trajectory.
>crashes
not just the message box, but if you go to the end of the first area (without going down the pipe), there's an invisible box by the wall that also hard crashes the game.
>>
>>8233183
I know, I sent a fix to this already. This level has been nerfed a bunch.
>>
>>8233219
>>8233216
Good to hear it's been fixed. I was also able to read the message box at the end WITHOUT it crashing, just thought that was interesting. And you can stand on it too.
>>
>>8233237
I think most of the very egregious problems with the game (like crashes and doors sending you to the wrong rooms) have been fixed by now. I expect a lot of the levels to be slightly different in the final buiild.
>>
>>8233237
sometimes it crashes, sometimes not, it varies.

>>8233219
>This level has been nerfed a bunch.
that's for the better. I didn't mention this in my write-up, but kusoge definitely ventured towards annoying difficulty at times (although I still beat it). while we're on this topic, I think CBT Blue Switch Palace, Enchanted Midnight, and the hot/cold level in the forest could be taken down a couple notches. don't get me wrong, they're good levels, but sometimes the execution is too intense for where they're placed, or maybe it's the pacing, where you have to execute on lots of shit in a row.

Yeah, the webm is from an unused /v/orld 2 level. It was never made into a full level. I don't know why the author didn't just give it to another person or put the files up for someone else to finish it. I think that's how the Chun-li level in /v/orld 2 got finished too.

I hope you will enjoy the rest when the full game comes out.
>>
>>8245198
You might enjoy /v/2 the most since there's lots of sequels from it in /v/3. Good choices for /v/orld 3 too, Hot Goddamn and most of the volcano world levels have some of the most stunning tracks I feel.
>>

word

>>8245431
I'll definitely check out /v/2. I'm still trudging through the current ROM, currently up to Tendies Tower and the leftside castle by the door, so I can't comment on the volcano world yet. origin of life is a good level, even though anons seemed intimidated by it, but I can't figure out how to hatch cucky desu
>>
>>8245526
>but I can't figure out how to hatch cucky desu
Get the star. That level would've been perfectly fine had anon not made the message box so cryptic and had a star instead of a roullete item at the surface. I still hope he didn't take it off, because then the level's name doesn't make sense.

Good luck by the way.
>>
>>8245550
ahh, of course, I should've realized. I tried to get the star once, but mistimed it. I agree, putting the necessary ingredient behind a roulette is a bit much, because if you make a mistake like I did, you start chasing around the level thinking you missed something, like me going all the way to the right outside, finding Yoshi, a dragon coin, and all sorts of shit but not the secret. I also discovered the passage back to the level start, and the invisible notebox, which was cool.
and thanks, but I'm fairly confident, having made it this far already.

With the amount of work put into the hack, do you think people will play the hack more often in the future if they want to look for works from 4chan? Of course its gonna have the whole 4chan branding like Pokemon Clover did which scare some normalfags anyway but it would be cool if it was as memorable as Clover. Last time I checked some partnered stream was playing through the first two hacks and nobody got in trouble for discussing it on SMWCentral.

I expect things to be slow, because SMW hacking is pretty niche. If anything, it's an interesting take on VIP's legacy and the hack does have some legitimately impressive original SMW hacking content. Clearly had a bunch of passion from everyone involved. Nevertheless, all that matters for me is that it exists, and people had fun making it. Vipper, eat your heart out. We have the more fun super bosses.
>>
>>8245819
At best, they'll be remembered as some of the all-time great SMW collab hacks. In terms of 4chan content, SMW hacking is rather niche, and the high difficulty will filter most players out, so it won't be as big as FNF Vs. /v/ or Clover, but I still think the hacks deserve to be considered essential products of 4chan culture, like those old classic Flash animations. I can see people playing them ten years from now and getting a sense of nostalgia for all the memorable levels and references. I know I'll be extra nostalgic, considering I've worked on every /v/orld hack.
>>
>>8245819
It will be remembered for lots of music, asm, and being delayed past the original time limit by 3x the time.
>>
>>8245938
FNF Vs. /v/ is peak soul. Too bad its tied to FNF and /Funkg/ since lets be brutally honest here. FNF has the FNAF problem of the most autistic members of the fandom are the most vocal ones. Plus idk fnf is kinda old lol

man, hatching and delivering Cucky was far more a mission than I anticipated, all thanks to those switch blocks.
Here's my issue with Origin of Life: either make the text vague and have a simple star bouncing around in its playpen, OR make it explicit and turn it into a roulette. doing both is too much, because then you'll start exploring around thinking the main ingredient is somewhere else, like I did. also, I think I misremembered, since it's impossible to get the star on the easy route.

for the text, instead of the line about a "blessing", you could put:
>he needs star power to hatch!
>>
>>8248326
I think the level designer sent OP an altered version of the level after seeing Lom go crazy trying to hatch the egg.

good to hear. because even if you suspect that you need a star, most players won't go through all that just to confirm a hunch. they'll do what I did, and journey across the outside area to no avail. so I'm thinking making the text explicit (like my example) is the right thing to do.

I have a few gripes about Key Below The Door. I dont care if you chalk points 1 2 and 3 up to me being a little bitch, but point 4 and 5 are objectively correct and I personally haven't seen them mentioned before.
>1
The mushroom you have to get right after the midway point. You can't predict if it will go left or right and you can't react, the best way to play it is just land on the platform and pray that it goes left.
>2
The unnecessary tightness of getting the P switch without losing the fire flower. Seriously fucking annoying.
>3
Unnecessarily tight to get P speed to reach the secret exit. And you have to do it twice without touching the muncher or instantly die/restart. Fun. This point and the point above are what make me hate this level. The first half was fun little puzzles but the second half is one giant room which is fun to figure out at first, but quickly gets old when you just barely don't make it and get clapped by the muncher, then get RNG'd by the mushroom 3 times in a row. The removal of a single muncher would make this level 200% better in my book.
>4
There is a single V coin. Not zero or five, just one freebie. And there's the indicator on the overworld saying that I didn't collect them all. You're going to drive all the completionists myself included mad with this.
>5
Cutoff trees leaves where the secret exit is. They're just kinda there and you can see the cutoff in game. Pic related.

just tested, and it always went left on my first pass. it seems to go left on an odd number of passes, although I haven't tested thoroughly. the first time I played through, it usually went left as well.
>2
personally I used i-frames for this, intentionally losing the fire flower and grabbing the feather in reserve.
>3
definitely. at first, I assumed P was impossible there, so I searched elsewhere. it was Lom's video that helped me find the secret. that muncher needs to be removed.

>>8250373
it seems the designer didn't fully idiotproof his level, since he didn't think anyone could be so baka (no offense). adding a few munchers or black boxes, recessed into the ceiling, would solve this.

Thats by design, there's no way to get the p switch without using i frames. My complaint is that the margin for error to not lose both your powerups is so damn small. Lose your momentum on one of the munchers and you're done.

Also in Defiance there's this janky ass mushroom block that creates a solid invisible block above it, because theres a coin above it. I'm pretty sure the author already knows about this though. Screen 04 sublevel FF.

I played through booster twice and the only thing I found that was of concern was how you could cuck yourself out of a checkpoint while gathering the yoshi coins for the secret exit if you're too good at it, but this was known by author and theres no easy workaround. Basically after getting a yoshi coin you should take the checkpoint then respawn the checkpoint by taking an intentional death. There was also one small design oversight that was brought to the authors attention, where you could overshoot a koopa you're supposed to land on, the author knows about this as well. I'll play through it again after I manage to beat the blue palace again and will report back if I find anything.

not sure if intentional but this flower and V coin can be accessed with just a P speed jump. I imagine you were supposed to spinjump off the boos. Same can be said for Defiance's first V coin by the way, you can P speed jump off the mushroom block up to the donut lifts but it's more hassle than its worth.
>>
>>8251605
I tried looking at the Booster overshoot, but it doesn't look simple to fix without potentially messing with the intended solution. The main issue is the overshoot requires a frame perfect jump off the platform and requires semi-strict positioning to get. There's no Koopa location that both the intended and frame-perfect solution will properly hit. I think this isn't unique either, there's several other locations where a frame-perfect jump with precise position will likely also result in an unintentional overshoot, it's a quirk in SMW physics letting a fake "P-speed" be carried unintentionally. I think I'm just going to leave it as-is, sorry to the people that are "too good" or whatever, it's just not possible to compensate every jump for this issue.

the fire flower is actually a regular fire flower, it is the same sprite
however, i made it so when you are in the fire flower powerup state, you are put into the 'big mario' state
this is because the mushroom sprite would 'randomly' go left or right depending on when you had it drop, which i felt was unfair
however, i did not want the player to have a fire flower in this section, because basically all of the enemies are immune to fire, i think it would just be annoying

>>
>>8258467
that makes it soulful, like how "omitted" is misspelled in /v/3
>>
>>8258702
I don't mean adding a whole level. I mean adding a secret exit to tricky treasure, which would open a path as in pic related. it's not really necessary, but it would let you skip through if you feel the need to backtrack across the overworld. then again, there is star world, so idk.
>>
>>8258825
to add on, there's a Star Road near Tricky Treasure, and another one just south of the forest. still, there are specific situations where that shortcut would be handy.
in fact, Tricky Treasure already has a key, for the part where you swim. You could put a keyhole at the very end of the underwater part and change literally nothing else and be set.

The glitched graphics annoy me a bit in this level. Go to level 10E (Bump to the Top) and insert this into the SP3 ExGFX slot to fix the note blocks.

another glitch I've noticed: sometimes, when finishing a level with under 100 seconds, the overworld music also gets sped up.

Have all of the songs been finished? I remember two anons finished their Southern Cross midi a while ago but I never heard a sampled version of it.

What's the point, just put the link on the thread, OP won't use it, not in a million years.

Ampharos is a good level except for that one jump immediately after the midpoint that kills you for not jumping at the arbitrary time and place.

i've commented on this soft lock / glitch death before but just wanted to confirm that it's caused by jumping pretty much precisely between two water tiles. natural player instinct upon first encountering this will lead to softlock, otherwise its just a death.

Is OP/someone keeping track of minor fixes like the invisible coin block in defiance and the Kusoge Course Palette?
>>
>>8261940
Someone's been updating the testing doc, if that's what you mean. For some retarded reason, his stuff doesn't appear on the sidebar, so you have to scroll all the way down to see it.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-dkZJV4oVz1Q48RNP4vh8k2SWi_Vr-jGmLPkAFxRy9U/edit#
We've also been getting level updates to fix these issues.
>>
>>8261948
I mostly mean in situations where the fixes are so small a level update isn't really needed.

I mean, I could make a level update for defiance to fix that one coin, but its just one coin.
>>
>>8261948
that someone being me, the same anon who created the magikoopa boss concept. I just did a critique on Tendies Tower.

>For some retarded reason, his stuff doesn't appear on the sidebar, so you have to scroll all the way down to see it.
not only that, but now it's not letting me use bold or color on text. wtf?

I just had to re-instate a bunch of my recent content, which disappeared. of course it was backed up in case of something like this, but that was weird. there was also a comment that disappeared, saying that he didn't want to add an extra checkpoint to Defiance (we'll agree to disagree on that). no idea why it's acting up like this.

Is it me, or is the thread not bumping?
>>
>>8264385
I thought /vr/ was just too fast today. Maybe this thread has been up for too long? I know it happened to the Speccy sticky.
>>
>>8264385
/vr/ threads have expiration dates because the board moves slowly and one dedicated shitposter used to bump trash threads en mass to push actually on topic threads off page 10
This thread is past it's expiration.
>>
testing, 1 2
>>
>>8264403
just confirmed, even though we're well under bump limit, it's no longer bumping. the expiration seems to be 2 weeks after the OP.

>>
>>8264449
I wasn't sure, since I hadn't encountered this particular brand of sorcery until now.
>>
>>8264453
Ah, I get ya. It's not exclusive to /vr/ though. /f/'s had expiration since forever, and some of the other slower boards also have it.
>>
maybe someone can post a new thread when this reaches page 10?
>>
alright, the new doc with all my content is almost ready. shall I post it in here? secondly, should I delete my content from the old doc, or leave it up with a note?
>>
>>8264608
I think you should leave up the content from the old doc. Put a note and a link to the new one. You might as well post the new doc here for now.

that's what I was thinking. and if I post now, the new thread can include the link in the OP:
