Ugh, what a shitty way to end the franchise.
>>8128309It should have ended with either VI or VII.
>>8128309I agree. The Ultima that killed Ultima for good. Not 8. This one.
E-Celeb cancer ahead. If you can stomach Spoony's autistic, unfunny gags then this series of videos gives a pretty good and sobering look at this train wreck. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQUVfo_kBMUhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yn0PXkaIsMhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoSNjYjy4Ek
>>8128323I like ultima 9, why does everyone hate it?
>>8128343it has very little to do with Ultima for a start
>>8128356Before I played it I only played I think Ultima 3. Honestly that review someone posted just seems like man child crybaby bullshit. Hyperbolic death threats is very feminine behavior
>>8128367Spoony is a raging sperg, no question about it. But even I felt insulted playing 9. It just feels dumb and pointless after you played the others.
>>8128339Your knowledge of the land shall be great!
>>8128403What's a Paladin?
>>8128405I'm not entirely sure.
>>8128343basically:unfaithful to established charactersunfaithful to the series' storylinemore of ultima 8's action-adventure type gameplay without much roleplayingextremely anticlimactic given the scope and momentum of past installmentsit was scraped together by the people who didn't leave in the middle of its long and unproductive development hell, and it shows
I kind of liked the game engine once they patched the worst of the bugs. It seemed more immersive than the glidey FPSs of the time. The hamfisted way it tried to be n00b-friendly and turn the Avatar into some stock Hollywood main character nearly made me quit for good.
>>8128339>let's pretend to be above classic spoonyCome on now. I know he's an easy target these days but his content was great. Far better than Rolf's.
>>8128339I unironically like and enjoy a lot of his old stuff. Not all of it, but a lot of it. E-Celeb talk isn't retro though.>>8128343Takes big steaming shits over all the previous games. Hate the story, hate the characters, hate the gameplay.
>>8128943Everyone is above Spoony. Guy's a mental NEET.
I'll just go ahead and say what everyone is thinking - Ultima was never good
>>8129618Woah, what a hot take! That post made me feel things! Good job!
>>8129627Go back to being dead, Richard
>>8129618>>8129628>He doesn't like the kino IV-VII and Underworld games
>>8128309What happened to Richard that made him kiss the ass of EA so much?
>>8129618Ultima Underworlds are still unmatched in their genre.
>>8129469Yeah, but his content was great, at least by youtube reviewer tard standards of the late 00s and early 2010s. His biggest mistake was ever apologizing for the rape jokes. He was almost based in holding the line and mocking requests to prostrate and self flagellate, but he caved.
>>8129618It's the epitome of "important, but outdone." It needed to happen, and it's influential as fuck but good god the crust now. I played through about half of Ultima 6 and tapped. The management, even with the ScummVM enhancements, was just too tedious and that pirate treasure hunt was fucking gay.>>8130093I've come to appreciate every imsim but this one. Too dusty and crusty, and I'm in my late 30s before you go to your trusty 'zoomer' guns. I still appreciate it's significance though.
>>8129618the games are a bit cumbersome compared to more contemporary rpgs but i still have fun playing themexcept ultima 2 is a pain in the ass to play, and 8 and 9 are disappointing>>8130349i wish he'd reined it in just enough to keep his career and mental health since his videos were interesting and funny>>8130378the ultima games were made during a time when rpg players were expected to have a lot of patience and invest many hours at a time into slow paced, open ended gameplayi guess we take user-friendly interfaces and a snappy pace for granted now
>>8128309Ugh, what a shitty way to begin the franchise.
>>8130417Yeah, I don't wanna shit on the series, but yeah... it's just a smidge past my attention span nowadays. Classic Spoony is missed, now he's just a really boring mutant. Not even a good lolcow.
>>8130426Ultima 1 is great and 3 is ok
>>8128464Continuity was always a loose concept with Ultima. There was no real storyline in the series. Serpent Isle and Pagan had completely messed any attempt to built up the Guardian.Ascension had more role playing than most of the series since the classes made a difference again and you had to learn the various special moves. And unlike the previous games the gameplay actually worked. It's not a perfect game but a lot of the criticism is completely blown out of proportion.
>>8128339https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SnzXsJ2vmQhere's the compiled version with skits removed
>>8130426Hi there, EA shill.
>>8128850>turn the Avatar into some stock Hollywood main characterThe design fit in line with the default Avatar of the previous titles (aside from 8 where you are stuck in a bucket). It would have been great to modify the looks but I don't think many 3D games of the time did that. The engine is impressive. Being able to travel the entire world without reloading and even fluidly switching the scale when using the ship was outstanding for the time. The game doesn't really use it to its full potential.Using pre-rendered cut scenes was a big mistake.
>>8128309> Buy collectorsedition. They hype up collectors edition. We're bringing back cool pack ins just like in the 80s. They did pioneer bringing this back. I can't think of anyone else that did.>CD is absolutely fucked. The only good song is damaged in the pressing and skips and shit.>Shitty plastic ankh, value .00002 USD.>Was there a map? I don't even remember. maybe the map was passable.
>>8130378>and I'm in my late 30s before you go to your trusty 'zoomer' guns. That just marks you as a retard rather than a kid trying to play a game twice his age. It's unmatched in terms of ease of use compared to its imitators like TES Arena. If anything the game has aged better than just about everything else released that time thanks to a proto WASD control scheme with the only strange adjustments being due to different keys for strafing from usual and no speed toggle.
>>8128343even if you discard all the problems with lore or design, it barely ran at release.
>>8130693Even by those loose continuity standards U9 fucked up. But also i disagree that the gameplay worked at all.
>>8131146What's your problem with the gameplay?
>>8130776Okay man. Okay. If that makes you happy. Your game's no fun to me. It's no fun to a lot of people, and the System Shock, Deus Ex, and Thief series leapfrogged this prototype shit.
>>8128309WHen it came out my computer was too shitty to run it, then I remember the reviews coming in and man it seemed terrible. 8 was kind of a let down too.
>>8131090Ultima Underworld also had problems on release. Black Gate had issues with the Voodoo memory management. It shouldn't matter 20 years later.
>>8132324Actually looking at a video of some one playing it, it looks pretty nice and kind of fun to explore.
>>8132327No thise merely inconvenient to configure to get the memory you needed. But U9 really would crash all the time
>>8128309>>8128339If you're interested in Ultima and its importance to gaming and a counterpoint to Spoony then I reccomend Sean Malstrom's Worlds of Origin series of articles. https://seanmalstrom.wordpress.com/category/worlds-of-origin/>The reason why I wrote it is to counter people saying, “The Open World is new! Novel! We have never seen this before! OMG!” whereas we were immersed in the Open World as far back as the early 1980s. I also wish to undo the damage Spoony has done. In order to understand the Open World, we should start at the beginning.Note that his counterpoint to Spoony is not to insist that IX is some kind of masterpeice but to explore what it is and what it means in detail that few ever bother with because they cannot penetrate how basically awful it is. >So when we come to Ultima IX, I do not think the issue is the framerates, bugs, or even the ditching of isometric view for the 3d game world. I think the issue is the tone of the game. Ultima IX is not the renaissance world tone of the Enlightenment trilogy or of a world being conquered by an evil one in the Age of Darkness. It is a world where all that is good is now evil. “No,” snarls the cynical reader. “I think it is the bugs, lack of isometric view, and the writing.” But look at your companions. Dupre is still dead (the Chaos Serpent). Iolo is a Wyrmguard and is evil. Shamino is dead. Holy cow, this is everything going wrong. Entertainment rarely pushes you emotionally into such darkness.
>>8132381I recommend just playing the games instead of wasting time on e-celeb garbage.
>>8132385>Play games to develop my own insights>If I tell anyone, I become an e-celeb and all my ideas instantly turn to worthless trash
>>8132356Don’t judge a book by it’s cover anon. The game would give a bad impression to anyone with bad storyline, linear map structure and lackluster combat for an RPG title.
>>8132503>linear map structureThis actually ruins it for me. My favorite part about older Ultimas, especially IV-VI, is the feeling like I am actually exploring, finding stuff, figuring out the world. The whole underworld in V is awesome.
>>8132385This, you can tell this whole thing is going to be some headcanon garbage by the last line in his quote>The game is pushing you into an emotional dark placeSo in other words, people didn't like the game and he wants to feel smart by finding a way to say no, they're actually all wrong and this is what it really is, and it has to do with emotions and buzzwords and... Give me a break.
>>8132535IX offered more exploration than VI or VII. In VI the maps was too large and there was nothing of interest between the towns. In VII the scale was too small and there was no room between the towns.IX offers a lot of room on the side to explore with various hidden locations to discover. Once you learn how to steer the ship you are free to go anywhere you want and even before that you have some choices on where to go next.
>>8132543He says the game is terrible but it had a point.
>>8132503What's wrong with the combat? It's was the first Ultima game with a decent combat system. There's actually a reason to use different weapons, attacks and magic instead of blindly spamming the same thing over and over again.
>>8132562>Once you learn how to steer the shipIs this like an end-game thing like in a FF game or can you do this early?
>>8132573After you cleanse 5 out of the 8 pillars so roughly halfway through.
>>8132563You should just tell us the main point yourself because the way the dude wrote that article is cringe 'feelings over reality' shit that puts off alot of people who wont read it. Normal people don't go through an emotional rollercoaster when playing games because the shit's not real, so we can't follow wtf the dude is saying.
>>8132582For me it was mostly the ending:So lemme get this straight - Because of this Conservation of Karma or whatever you're springing on me all of a sudden, all the evil shit that happened since I showed up in Ultima 4 is the consequence of the good stuff I did since then. Shadowlords, Gargish invasions, The Guardian, Chuckles' unusually long lifespan. All my fault. So, instead of slogging through poisonous marshes, getting my skin burnt off by dragon fire, and genociding other species by accident, I could have been tossing back mugs of ale with Dupre and Iolo at the Blue Boar this whole time? That's right, Avatar, YOU were the bad guy all along LOL!Really left a bad taste in the mouth.
>>8132746To me it felt like they had no idea how to wrap the guardian up. It was already the fifth game of a supposed trilogy and they couldn't afford to leave it unresolved for yet another game so they went with some crap that let them remove him once and for all. Making the Guardian into the Avatar's evil twin and fusing them into one managed thatThe Gargish demise had already been blamed on the Avatar in 6 even though moving the Codex wasn't his doing.
>>8132746>>8132805Thanks for posting an explanation. Makes sense that this would piss people off as it's kind of a shitty and negative twist, although it does get you thinking. If it could have been executed better then maybe they could have pulled it off and made it a classic moment. My impression is that alot of people didn't like the game itself though, so the ending wouldn't really matter as much?
>>8132852Because they couldn't play it in 1999 and haven't tried it since then.Notice how they can't name any faults in the gameplay and struggle with details of the contents. Things like >>8128405 get repeated endlessly even though it's an optional dialog aimed at newcomers.
>>8128343It reminds them of Fable. That's why it gets a pass on here.
>>8132973But you do have to admit that Ascension and two cancelled MMO games was a final nail in the coffin for Ultima series
>tfw there are subhuman brainlet unironically defend Ultima IX
>>8132973Oh fuck off you clown. I bought U9 shortly after release here(Krautland). I had beefy hardware and the game ran like shit. It also was a colossal disappointment for someone who grew up with the series. It's not Ultima, it's a train wreck, hastily cobbled together in a troubled and prolonged development cycle. And it's NOT a good game on its own.
>>8135167It was supposed to be the final game in the series. It's weird enough that they started making Odyssey.
>>8137212You haven't touched the game in 20 years and you can't provide any real reasons why it's a bad game.
>>8137215>It's weird enough that they started making Odyssey.I'm guessing the EA and Origin wanted to cash in some more of MMORPG genre since how massively hype the WoW and Everquest 2 were back then
>>8137252Are you retarded?! Serious question.
>>8137289Ad hominem doesn't really help your position.Try actually criticizing the gameplay.
>>8137371Shut the fuck up.
>>8137287They could just have made another Ultima Online without some weird plot about fighting inside the Avatar's mind.
>>8137435>They could just have made another Ultima Online without some weird plot about fighting inside the Avatar's mind. That’s what Ultima Online 2 was originally supposed to be before it was canned for unknown reason.https://youtu.be/eWumht6AuZohttps://youtu.be/hwviFNhYefUhttps://youtu.be/tem-zCBZTv0https://youtu.be/s74NhgxY60shttps://youtu.be/hQ3gWNm9EgE
>>8137497Ultima 9 even had a teaser for that.Back then it made more sense for EA to continue milking UO1.
>>8137289The letter of his post is not wrong. To an outside observer it looks like he is right. And influencing the masses to believe you are right is the bread and butter of modern "trolling".Then again, to prove him wrong you'd have to expend a significant effort, which he will try to undermine using any of the tried and true Internet demagogy tricks. So you'd have to waste even more effort. It's all about appearances. The only winning move is not to play, but then you need the staff to actually want those faggots out too and they only fuck up what can potentially endanger the income.
>>8132746This. Feels like having shit shoveled in your face.
>>8130059>>8130359Must have been astronomical - or astronomically needed, since Garriott had such a hateboner for EA. Fun Fact: Captain Hawkins the pirate is an effigy of Trip Hawkins of EA.>>8135167It followed the standard EA playbook:>Find a smaller, innovative game company with a hit franchise.>Make them an offer they can't refuse.>Replace most of their staff.>Axe all of their lesser selling titles.>Keep churning out uninspired, marketing-driven sequels until one flops, then dump whatever's left. What's it going to take to purge this evil from our world, /vr/?
>>8139880Some of the other pirates as well.https://wiki.ultimacodex.com/wiki/Ten_pirates_of_HawkinsBlack Gate also has references like Elisabeth&Abraham and the Cube/Sphere/Tetrahedron. In some aspects they were more obsessed with EA than with actually finishing the game.EA doesn't intend to replace the staff, the old staff quits because they can't stand the working conditions.Garriott kind of deserved it after the Questron bullshit.
>>8139902A guy fending off crackheads with an UZI in his bedroom deserves my unwavering admiration.
>>8128309It looks like a “better” and 3D take on the Ultima VII SNES version while also being a worse Gothic. I recently tried Daikatana so I’m curious how fun/bad this’ll be.

>>8139880Trip Hawkins is without a doubt the Founder of EA. However, Trip left EA by late 1991. You can't blame everything EA has done on Hawkins, especially not nowadays.
>>8141072Nobody blames him now. Post-Hawkins EA is just a colossal corporate power trip with nothing but shareholder-oriented faggotry.
>>8128309Got a pirated version, most likely a rip without music or videos. Played until a crab killed me. Deleted it.
>>8141132You need to hit their weak points for massive damage. For some reason they have tons of cash.
>>8140000What did I miss here
>>8142087lots of blah blah but informativehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWhb-cMF8hQthe gist of itIn 1997 his house (Britannia Manor) was broken into by a deranged fan. Garriott held him off with an Uzi, firing a warning shot while waiting for police to arrive. Rumor has it the man was naked and drugged, hiding in his bedroom. It's also said the guy had a deadly accident at SeaWorld years later.
>>8142123What a mad lad
>>8140014>I’m curious how fun/bad this’ll be.Yeahh, good luck with that anon.
>>8128309>Ugh, what a way to end the shitty franchise.
Now that I see it; Spoony complained about the continuity errors between in-game and FMV. BUT: I know for a fact (from a PC Games magazines reportage about Origin) that they started with the FMVs as early as mid 1996. Some of these had simply around for years when they finally cobbled the game into something vaguely playable.
>>8143672They should have left them out. The game has in-engine sequences that look better than the ancient prerendered shit. Most of Spoony's criticism is complete bullshit. You're better off not believing anything he said.
>>8143667>t.EA press secretary
>>8143729>ancient prerendered shit.Fuck you too buddy ;^)
>>8143729He's mostly right. I regret getting Ultima IX shortly after its release.
>>8143652Very awkward so far.
>>8145540Hope you install the forgottenworld fan-patch or else you'll have to deal with constant crashes throughout the game. Here's the link:https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Ultima_IX:_Ascension
>5 days later >Thread's still up
>>8145754A testament to the assness of this game
>>8145525His complaints are complete crap.He criticized that Castle Britain had a different design from the previous games when that had been the case in all previous games. He complained about various items being the same size in the inventory after he had complained about small items being easily lost in Ultima 7's inventory. He failed to kill a giant enemy crab because he didn't try to attack its weak points for massive damage. And so on. It's just picking stuff to present the game in a bad light. His "reviews" for the rest of the series are similar, just with different directions.
>>8145540Why do you have armor pieces in the quick slots and not a single spell?
