Shit just looks so bad an unrealistic, I prefer "dark" night-times like in the picture to the right alot more
In fact i have such an irrational hate for this design that I actively avoid games which feature blue night effects
>>
>>7967631
No, I don't hate blue-tinted nights. Using this image as an example, it irks me how bright Sonic and the crosswalk are in comparison to everything else in the image on the right.
>>
Night is not blue. Night is black.

I prefer actually seeing what the fuck is going on in my videogames.

Night in vidya often looks like 'day as night' in film, where talentless hacks shoot night scenes during the day and then just color correct them blue. It always looks like dogshit, every single time.
>>
In actual night time your eyes will adjust to the darkness to try to see better. This doesn't work for a video game because the room you're playing in is still lit. Realistic darkening would make it impossible to see anything.
>>
>>7969320
Penumbra: Overture had a feature where your eyes adjusted to the darkness over time and it was great. I don't understand why there are people who actually want to stumble around blind while playing video games.

blue nights are peak soul

Well just put on some sun glasses if you want you game darker lol.

based retard poster wasting thread space.

you haven’t been out in enough environments if you think left looks unrealistic. right is what it’d maybe look like during a power outage and likely with some heavy night clouds or pollution, maybe. If anything what bothers me about these screenshots is how the right one has streetlamps that apparently don’t cast light more than an inch away from the bulb

Right looks like something is fucked in the rendering.

Left looks like a shitty blue filtered day for night shot. Night isn't blue.
>>
>>7972673
And here's an actual city street at night.
>>
>>7967642
Hedgehogs aren't blue either, retard. It's an artistic choice, which DX ruined like it did any other part of the game with interesting lighting

In the right image it's hard to see anything, and some stuff like the crossing on the road look like they're glowing. The left image gives the impression that it's night without sacrificing any details. It's not supposed to look realistic or anything, just convey to you that it's night time so the casino is open.
The real good shit is the sunset, anyway.
>>
>>7973282
>it's hard to see anything
that's why you add appropriate lighting, which takes more artistic sense than just doing shit like this >>7972673
>>
>>7969094
Left has shadows cast by the buildings. Right looks shit with broken rendering. But that's the GC version in a nutshell.
>>
>>7973306
Left is the GC version though.
And right is likely the modded PC version

If you adjusted the white balance correctly for the fluorescent lights then it would be blue.

I've been to ybor many times, just give it up lmao.
>>
>>7972675
I agree that night-scapes in vidya shouldn't be blue, but I'm almost positive it was a design choice based on the CRTs of the day. Most CRTs had a huge "Red push" that tinted blacks red, pair that with a very limited contrast and it makes more sense to tint things blue to get a "night time" feel.

>But muh CRTs have unlimited contrast!
THEY DO NOT, just because the blackest part is pure black, doesn't mean the contrast is good. Look up black crush for more details.

in real life you'd be able to make out what the orange sign says, but with the camera set to maximize light since it's dark, you get a orange rectangle. same with the blue lights, it doesn't look like that in real life.

lmao
