I'm honestly desperate enough for some of these games that if they sold them in this condition but priced them properly enough to reflect their damages that I would honestly buy them, given that they would still play and work. I don't pay faggot prices, but i tend to pick shit label games if the price reflects the condition. At least if i get some fucking covered in blockbuster stickers, i know i aint getting a bootleg. Plus, feels good giving these games a home. I like to sometimes buy games without labels, fun little chance to see what you get.

I managed to get a hold of an actually decent quality copy of Silent Hill 1 this way. It got it's priced reduced because it had the Hollywood Video label stuck on the cover of the disc and the inside of the manual was torn up and had water damage. From the outside though? The cover showed perfectly fine and the disc was in perfect quality in the original case. So from a "show front" perspective the case and manual looked perfectly normal with a fully functional disc, which I considered a blessing.

Sometimes weird stickers/labels are actually what make the game unique or give it a history. I took some shitty game shop's "warranty void if removed" sticker off of my super wide gear, and it left this "VOID" pattern (of course the sticker is tamper-proof, to show that the original had been removed and make it difficult/impossible to replace). But you know what? I actually think the VOID pattern looks cool, and now that my cunt finally told warranty fuckers to shove it, I can wear it as a big middle finger to all those fucking corporate snakes who shit this garbage into the world. Been thinking I should get a bart simpson sticker or something to put with it, maybe him flipping you off. Would go well with the vibe and era of release.

I prefer my labels and stickers to be as new as possible, but sometimes I buy used cartridges with marker writings from previous owners and I don't mind it. It really makes you think what history this game had.

Also, not a retro, but a few years ago I've bought a Japanese version of Custom Battler Bomberman for DS and on the inner side of the box, there was a tiny doodle of Bomberman head, drawn with a stylus or maybe a finger nail. You could only see it with the right lighting. I thought it was super cute.

>Are they are aren't they? You seem confused about it yourself.

They are not rare. I have had many Sonic 2 *not for resale* carts complete in box. I use to buy used Model 2 Genesis units quite often, and I would get Sonic 2 *not for resale* along with it. I have two copies right here. I use to pawn them off. They were packaged with the Genesis Model 2 in North America. It was the most popular bundle for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. If the cart with the Sega sticker plastered over the "not for resale" sticker is real. Then Sega even had overstocks of the not for resale carts.

This was the default bundle from Sega from 1993 to 1995-1996 (I would guess)

My take on it is that Tony wrote his name on his cart so that when he traded it to his schoolmate for another game there would be no question as to who was the rightful owner. The friend he lent it to wrote "poop smells" to troll Tony. Tony, being a clever bastard, amended it to "smells good" as a counter troll.

That should actually clean up fairly well. Goo Gone will get rid of the sticker residue, and you can use a dry-erase marker to remove permanent marker. You just draw over the permanent marker with a Dry-Erase marker and then it will just wipe off.

Still not worth $85 bucks the way it is, but if the seller cleaned it up he could probably get something decent for it.

not every japanese seller does it but maybe about a quarter do. not just when selling abroad, either; i lived in japan for a while and people selling in-country on yaj and mercari send candy and notes too. one that i remember being cute was when i bought a bunch of evangelion-themed books from one seller, they sent a note written on stationery with an evangelion print. never got poisoned from eating any of the candy...

the real question is why on earth was the market ever as low as it once was? We're talking about people selling games well over 90% below its original value. Price of most retro games today match their original value adjusted for inflation.
>>
>>7968087
Some fact checker guy said it was an urban myth a decade ago. I believed them then, but given what I know about fact checking now, yeah probably happened.
>>
>>7968280
In terms of probability, it probably happened once and only once in all of US history, but the event is so horrific that just the occurrence of it happening once was enough to spread fear of it happening ever again. A lot of aversions are born from similar causes.

This. The only way I'd believe otherwise is if some asshole in the production line was repeatedly doing it, since that's actually been documented.

My thoughts are the exact opposite. It started as an urban legend to scare kids and eventually someone decided to do it for real. I imagine they would be caught though.

people were just easily jewed then. Giving away $60 games for $5. They had no idea this shit was valuable. The "retro hunting" scene was around since the early 2000s so these games have always been in demand. They just took commercial stores selling the latest stuff at their word. Thank God for it though, I got so many good games for under $10 back then.

Millenials started working and suddenly had lots of money, and then they got interested in the games of their childhood.

>>7968204
>the real question is why on earth was the market ever as low as it once was?
Easy. Games were old enough to be yesterday's news but not old enough to be vintage or cool. Case in point: in 2008, EB Games was selling used, complete Gamecube games for $9.99 and entire consoles for $19.99. Nobody wanted a Gamecube, everyone was still lining up for a Wii. Gamecube was an outdated children's toy that had outlived its usefulness, the Wii was the hot new shit. Now every nigger and his dog wants a Gamecube and suddenly these things are worth a ton of money. Meanwhile you can easily pick up a used Wii for $20 and the games are $5-$10 tops. Similar story for the PS3 and X360.

>>7969472
Some of my N64 collection is made up of pristine carts and boxes that I kept as a kid, but most of it looks like this because I was picking up these "garbage" carts for $4-$5 a piece in the early 2010s when I "rediscovered" the N64. At the time I was a poor student and it was a good way for me to maximize the number of games I could play (I could get 5 games that looked like shit for $20, or one game that looked good for $20). Nowadays $20 is actually not a terrible deal for that.
>>

I have a feeling that the 6th generation is the last series of consoles that will be truly collectible. By the 7th gen, you started to run into updates and other nonsense. It was increasingly acceptable to release games with bugs because, hey, you could fix them with updates. There will still be an element of collectability, but you'll be getting launch titles which may or may not have bugs and glitches that were fixed later. It sort of takes away some of the appeal.

8th gen stuff, with its always-on online bullshit and constant updates, is going to be more or less nothing but trash. Think about a game like Animal Crossing on the Switch, and think about HOW MUCH of the game is dependent on updates that were released after its release to keep the interest of the zoomies and their microscopic attention spans. In 20 years, you could buy a game cartridge, but unless you find a Switch with all the updates, the base game is not going to give you the complete experience. Meanwhile, Animal Crossing on the Gamecube is the same now as it was in 2002 (although the clock is ticking on that 2030 end date)
>>
>>7972128
lol
>>
>>7972235
I think Wii will be collectible because it has a unique controller. Correct me if I'm wrong, but someone on /v/ said PS3 games are not on the Playstation store because they're hard to emulate or port to modern Playstation consoles. If that's the case, PS3 will also be collectable. Xbox does a good job of porting and enhancing their old games to new systems so I don't think 360 will be as valuable.

The constant updates will be the reason why physical discs are valuable because it has the unaltered game. Rockstar removed several songs and textures from GTAV through updates. You can only play that version of the game with the original disc.
>>
>>7972334
I know for sure San Andreas has songs removed too. Probably every updated version of a GTA game has songs removed because of expired rights. You can only play the game with the original soundtrack if you have the disc or mod it on PC.
>>
If you spend 2 hours less every day on the internet and learn Japanese instead in 3 months you can play nintendo games and in a year almost any game.
I spent 300$ on a N64, 2 controllers, expension pack and 20 games including all the classics except goldeneye which was too expensive (40$).

i dont get why they changed this, rednecks live in california, just having it in the the game isnt offensive, so removing it made no sense. especially since the games are supposed to be satirical, so removing problematic parts of culture shows they arent even confident in their own work

Sega Saturn cases are sturdy plastic, Game Boy Advance boxes are cardboard, so that's not really the same thing at all. A Sega Saturn case in a bubble envelope is acceptable, a GBA box isn't.

>>

What's wrong with you? This is the time to hold on to those things. I'll tell you from experience, my grandma kept around a lot of old toys, books, and movies and as a kid I loved getting to play with, read, and watch all that stuff. Not only did I get to hear about those things, I got to actually experience them, and that was a great family bonding experience. Don't sell off all your stuff, keep it and show it to your kid when they're old enough.
>>
>>7976661
>Don't sell off all your stuff, keep it and show it to your kid when they're old enough.
i plan on it, but let's be real. my kid isn't gonna want to play super bowling and i can get a fair amount of money for that. i have a fair amount of n64 stuff that isn't really that fun to play, but worth money. of course i'll share the classics with my kid, but if someone wants to give me hundreds of dollars for some off beat racing game that isn't even top 5 on the system, i have to think about cashing in at some point.
>>
>>7976641
yes
>>
>>7976672
I don't think it's just about sharing the "classics," but about sharing the things you used to play, even the off-beat or less good stuff. My dad and I spent a lot of time playing Top Gun and Spot on the NES and I have great memories from that even though those are two games that no one would recommend playing. Just something to think about.
>>

I've dealt with ordering both; the cardboard GBA boxes are WAY more susceptible to permanent creases than the plastic Saturn game cases. Although both are fragile, Saturn cases aren't nearly as vulnerable to having a few boxes stacked on top of it.
